Residual defects in the overlayer of fully annealed SIMOX material have been studied by means of a chemical etching technique. The etching procedure has been calibrated and an optimum recipe is reported. Observations using optical microscopy and transmission electron microscopy have been used to quantify the defect densities and good agreement between the two techniques has been established, confirming that the optimised chemical etching process can be used with confidence to determine the dislocation density for values < 10(7) cm-2.

The extraction behavior of thorium(IV) sulfate by primary amine N1923 in imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL) namely 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C(8)mim]PF6) was systematically studied in this paper. Results showed that the extraction behavior was quite different from that using conventional solvent as diluent. A reversed micellar solubilization extraction mechanism was proposed for the extraction of thorium(IV) by N1923/[C(8)mim]PF6 via slope analysis method and polarized optical microscopy (POM)/transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation. The salt-out agent, Na2SO4, was demonstrated to prompt this extraction mechanism.

Liquid crystalline properties of a mesomorphic polyacetylene {-[HC=C(CH2 )(9)OOC-Biph-OC7H15](n)- (PA9EO7), Biph=4-4'-biphenylyl} are investigated by X-ray diffraction, polarizing optical microscope, and transmission electron microscope. Polyacetylene PA9EO7 from solution adopts a sandwich structure, which is a high order smectic phase. The biphenylyl pendants pack in a hexagonal fashion and the distance between two appendages is 4.51 Angstrom. The heptyloxy tails on one polymer backbone overlap with those on the neighboring chain. The nonyl spacer and the heptyloxy tail exhibit a hexagonal packing arrangement with intermolecular distance of 3.24 Angstrom.

Although broadband incoherent light does not efficiently couple into a high-finesse optical cavity, its transmission is readily detectable and enables applications in cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy in the gas phase, liquid phase and on surfaces. This chapter gives an overview of measurement principles and experimental approaches implementing incoherent light sources in cavity-enhanced spectroscopic applications. The general principles of broadband CEAS are outlined and general “pros and cons” discussed, detailing aspects like cavity mirror reflectivity calibration or the establishment of detection limits. Different approaches concerning light sources, cavity design and detection schemes are discussed and a comprehensive overview of the current literature based on a methodological classification scheme is also presented.

A reduced-density-operator description is developed for coherent optical phenomena in many-electron atomic systems, utilizing a Liouville-space, multiple-mode Floquet–Fourier representation. The Liouville-space formulation provides a natural generalization of the ordinary Hilbert-space (Hamiltonian) R-matrix-Floquet method, which has been developed for multi-photon transitions and laser-assisted electron–atom collision processes. In these applications, the R-matrix-Floquet method has been demonstrated to be capable of providing an accurate representation of the complex, multi-level structure of many-electron atomic systems in bound, continuum, and autoionizing states. The ordinary Hilbert-space (Hamiltonian) formulation of the R-matrix-Floquet method has been implemented in highly developed computer programs, which can provide a non-perturbative treatment of the interaction of a classical, multiple-mode electromagnetic field with a quantum system. This quantum system may correspond to a many-electron, bound atomic system and a single continuum electron. However, including pseudo-states in the expansion of the many-electron atomic wave function can provide a representation of multiple continuum electrons. The 'dressed' many-electron atomic states thereby obtained can be used in a realistic non-perturbative evaluation of the transition probabilities for an extensive class of atomic collision and radiation processes in the presence of intense electromagnetic fields. In order to incorporate environmental relaxation and decoherence phenomena, we propose to utilize the ordinary Hilbert-space (Hamiltonian) R-matrix-Floquet method as a starting-point for a Liouville-space (reduced-density-operator) formulation. To illustrate how the Liouville-space R-matrix-Floquet formulation can be implemented for coherent atomic radiative processes, we discuss applications to electromagnetically induced transparency, as well as to related pump–probe optical phenomena, and also to the unified description of radiative and dielectronic recombination in electron–ion beam interactions and high-temperature plasmas.

Post-synthetic modification (PSM) of metal-organic frameworks encompassing the chemical transformation of the linker present is a promising new route for engineering optical centres and tuning the light emission properties of materials, both in the visible and in the near infrared (NIR) spectral regions. Here, PSM of isoreticular metal-organic framework-3 (IRMOF-3) with ethyl oxalyl monochloride, ethyl acetoacetate, pentane-2,4-dione, 3-(2- hydroxyphenyl)-3-oxopropanal, 2-chloroacetic acid, glyoxylic acid, methyl vinyl ketone and diethyl (ethoxymethylene)malonate followed by chelation of trivalent lanthanide ions afforded intriguing near infrared (Nd3+) and visible (Eu3+, Tb3+) light emitters. IRMOF-3 was used as a case in point due to both its highly porous crystalline structure and the presence of non-coordinating amino groups on the benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) linker amenable to modification. The materials were characterised by elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, optical, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and liquid and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. The solid-state luminescence properties of Ln-modified-IRMOF-3 were investigated at room temperature. The presence of the bdc aromatic ring, β– diketonate and oxalate enhanced the Ln3+ sensitization via ligand-to-metal energy transfer (anthena effect). As far as photocalysis is concerned, we have synthesized metal−organic frameworks (Cr-MIL-125-AC, Ag-MIL-125-AC) by a green method (solid–vapors reactions). The resulting functionalized materials show a photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation up to 6.52 times larger than that of the commercial photocatalyst hombikat UV-100. These findings open the door for further research for improving the photocatalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks.

High chromium content is responsible for the formation of a protective passive surface layer on austenitic stainless steels (ASS). Due to their larger amounts of chromium, superaustenitic stainless steels (SASS) can be chosen for applications with higher corrosion resistance requirements. However, both of them present low hardness and wear resistance that has limited their use for mechanical parts fabrication. Plasma nitriding is a very effective surface treatment for producing harder and wear resistant surface layers on these steel grades, without harming their corrosion resistance if low processing temperatures are employed. In this work UNS S31600 and UNS S31254 SASS samples were plasma nitrided in temperatures from 400 °C to 500 °C for 5 h with 80% H 2-20% N2 atmosphere at 600Pa. Nitrided layers were analyzed by optical (OM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Vickers microhardness testing. Observations made by optical microscopy showed that N-rich layers were uniform but their thicknesses increased with higher nitriding temperatures. XRD analyses showed that lower temperature layers are mainly composed by expanded austenite, a metastable nitrogen supersaturated phase with excellent corrosion and tribological properties. Samples nitrided at 400 °C produced a 5 μm thick expanded austenite layer. The nitrided layer reached 25 lm in specimens treated at 500 °C. There are indications that other phases are formed during higher temperature nitriding but XRD analysis was not able to determine that phases are iron and/or chromium nitrides, which are responsible for increasing hardness from 850 up to 1100 HV. In fact, observations made by TEM have indicated that formation of fine nitrides, virtually not identified by XRD technique, can begin at lower temperatures and their growth is affected by both thermodynamical and kinetics reasons. Studies of sub-lethal effects of pesticide residues on stingless bees are scarce and morphological analysis of organs would add information to toxicological analysis in order to clarify the continuous exposure of Scaptotrigona postica to insecticides. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphology and histochemistry of the Malpighian tubules (excretory organ) of S. postica exposed to fipronil or boric acid to detect cellular responses that indicate toxicity or adaptative mechanisms to stress induced by exposure of worker bees to low doses of these chemical compounds. Newly emerged bees were submitted to toxicological bioassays and morphological analyses by optical microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy, as well as histochemical methods, were performed to detect proteins and glycoconjugates. Additionally, immunohistochemical detection of DNA fragmentation and HSP70 (70-kDa Heat shock protein) were performed to detect cell death and stress response, respectively. Statistical analysis, for the bioassays conducted with ingestion of contaminated diet with boric acid at 0.75% (w/w) or with fipronil at 0.1μg/kg of food, showed that the survival of bees that ingested the contaminated diets were significantly different to the survival rate presented by the control group (P<0.0001). Although some characteristics indicative of initiation of cell death were observed, the cells remained metabolically active in the processes of excretion and inactivation of chemical compounds. The data from this study reinforce the importance of research on sublethal effects of low doses of pesticides on bees in an attempt to assess a possible realistic dose and evaluate the risk assessment of stingless bee S. postica foraging in the vicinity of cultivated fields and/or in green urban areas. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

ABSTRACT In this research paper submitted to opt to the degree of Doctor, the materials that make the “Piedra de Ojo” sandstone masonry houses of the historical center of Maracaibo, Venezuela, built in the XIX century, are analyzed and studied. There exists no technical-constructive descriptive literature of the constructive system, so this thesis complements the very limited existing stylistic description, where barely some construction materials are mentioned. With the historical context and the blocks of the area where the preselected houses to be studied being defined, 12 of these houses that were in a state of decay (deterioration) were selected and this condition allowed to collect samples more easily, in order to carry out the characterization and behavior of the different materials used: stone and mortars in the walls, wood trusses in roofs, ceilings and woodwork of doors and windows, walls and ceramic finishes, etc. To complement the foregoing, this thesis has been divided in six chapters: In Chapter I, the state of art at national and international levels of similar research is developed, which is a review of the evolution of housing in the city of Maracaibo. In Chapter II, the methodology used in the thesis is described, according to the research’s objectives, general and specific ones, which have covered several fronts: literature survey, planimetric survey, sampling, visu analysis, physical-chemical characterization and correlation of results. Chapter III presents the characterization of the “Piedra de Ojo” sandstone; geological description and petrologic characterization are developed. Essays performed in the laboratory are reviewed, such as: visu characterization, petrographic characaterization, petrographic study by optical microscopy of transmission, petrographic study by electronic scanning microscopy in secondary electron mode (SSE) and electron microscopy scaning by backscattered electron mode. Also scalar properties of the masonry and the following: density, porosity and mechanical resistance, among others. In Chapter IV, characteristics of the mortars used in the houses are analyzed and pathology or damages are presented. They are classified into three types: grout, cement render and plaster. Physical and chemical testing, mechanical strength and grain size (granulometric) is documented; its main components are explained: lime binder, aggregates and additives and manufacturing technology as well as the physical, water, chemical and granulometric characteristics. Chapter V contains the constructive applications of masonry materials. Other housing elements are described, such as; foundations, mixed walls, moldings, wall paintings and finally floorings (pavements). And in chapter VI the most representative species of wood used in the overhead fixtures and cover elements are analyzed. Likewise, woodwork of doors and windows and their wooden lintels or landings are described; anatomical identification and physical and mechanical properties of the ones used is made. The results and conclusions determined that 90% of the materials used in its construction came from areas near the construction of housing, such as El Milagro formation, converted into stone quarry and other materials came from the Toas Island and from the export of the Caribbean islands and Europe, such as cement. The main contribution of this research is the constructive technical analysis and physical, mechanical and chemical characterization of the materials of the houses, in order that such information is used to define the new materials to be used in the housing restoration and future research lines.
