The extinction of the giant tortoises of the Seychelles Archipelago has long been suspected but is not beyond doubt. A recent morphological study of the giant tortoises of the western Indian Ocean concluded that specimens of two native Seychelles species survive in captivity today alongside giant tortoises of Aldabra, which are numerous in zoos as well as in the wild. This claim has been controversial because some of the morphological characters used to identify these species, several measures of carapace morphology, are reputed to be quite sensitive to captive conditions. Nonetheless, the potential survival of giant tortoise species previously thought extinct presents an exciting scenario for conservation. We used mitochondrial DNA sequences and nuclear microsatellites to examine the validity of the rediscovered species of Seychelles giant tortoises. Our results indicate that the morphotypes suspected to represent Seychelles species do not show levels of variation and genetic structuring consistent with long periods of reproductive isolation. We found no variation in the mitochondrial control region among 55 individuals examined and no genetic structuring in eight microsatellite loci, pointing to the survival of just a single lineage of Indian Ocean tortoises.

A pinnotherid zoea taken in a plankton sample from the Selvagens Islands during the TFMCBM/SELVAGENS’2000 Cruise, organized by the Natural Sciences Museum of Tenerife (Canary Islands), differs from previously described zoeas of the family. The specimen has dorsal and lateral spines but no rostrum, a combination of characters not previously described from pinnotherid zoeas. The lateral spines originate behind the upper part of the eye, unlike all previously described Pinnotheridae zoeas where these spines, when present, originate near the ventrolateral margin of the carapace. The specimen is attributed to Afropinnotheres monodi, the only pinnotherid species known from the area with undescribed larvae.

Five species of bresilioid shrimp were investigated at seven hydrothermal sites on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: Menez Gwen, Lucky Strike, Rainbow, Broken Spur, TAG, Snake Pit and Logatchev. Samples were prepared for analysis of stable isotopes, elemental composition and lipids. Shrimp behaviour was observed from the submersible ‘Alvin’ and in the laboratory aboard RV ‘Atlantis’. The distribution and zonation of the shrimp species was recorded. Juvenile shrimp of all species arrive at the vents carrying reserves of photosynthetic origin, built-up in the pelagic larval stages. These reserves are used while the shrimp metamorphose to the adult form and, in Rimicaris exoculata and Chorocaris chacei, while they develop epibiotic bacteria supporting structures, the modified mouthparts and the inside of the carapace. The main food of adult R. exoculata is filamentous bacteria that grow on these structures. The intermediate sizes of C. chacei also feed on such bacteria, but the final stage gets some food by scavenging or predation. Mirocaris species scavenge diverse sources; they are not trophically dependent on either R. exoculata or mussels. Adults of Alvinocaris markensis are predators of other vent animals, including R. exoculata. The dense swarms of R. exoculata, with their exosymbionts, can be compared to endosymbiont-containing animals such as Bathymodiolus and the vestimentiferan tube-worms of the Pacific vents. Such associations, whether endo- or ectosymbiotic, may be necessary for the development of flourishing communities at hydrothermal vents.

Size at onset of maturity (SOM) was estimated for both male and female Nephrops from primary sexual characteristics and morphometric traits. SOM estimated from primary sexual characteristics based on histological examination of the gonad ranged from 15.1 mm carapace length (CL) in males to 22.9 mm CL in females. Nephrops morphometric maturity, or change in allometric growth of body parts, was estimated from appendix masculina and cutter claw lengths in males and abdomen width in females from two sites in the Irish Sea. Two regression techniques were used to estimate morphometric maturity. Estimated SOM from morphometric characteristics ranged from 23.2 to 27.6 mm CL in females and from 25.9 to 31.0 mm CL in males. Spatial variation in SOM was observed in Nephrops from different parts of the Irish Sea.

Over recent years there have been substantial efforts to record and interpret the post-nesting movements of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) breeding in tropical regions. Less well documented are the movements undertaken by individual turtles during the breeding season itself, or more specifically between sequential nesting events. Such movements are of interest for two reasons: (1) gravid female leatherbacks may range extensively into the territorial waters and nesting beaches of neighbouring countries, raising questions for conservationists and population ecologists; and (2) the magnitude of movements themselves help elucidate underlying reproductive strategies (e.g. whether to rest near to the nesting or forage extensively). Here, satellite relay data loggers are used (SRDLs) to detail the movements and behaviour of two female leatherback turtles throughout three consecutive inter-nesting intervals in the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies. Both near-shore residence and extensive inter-nesting movements were recorded, contrasting previous studies, with movements away from the nesting beach increasing towards the end of the nesting season. Using this behavioural study as a backdrop, the suitability of attaching satellite transmitters directly to the carapace was additionally explored as an alternative approach to conventional harness deployments. Specifically, the principal aims were to (1) gather empirical data on speed of travel and (2) assess dive performance (aerobic dive limit) to enable comparisons with turtles previously fitted with harnesses elsewhere in the Caribbean (n = 6 turtles; Grenada, WI). This produced mixed results with animals bearing directly attached transmitters travelling significantly faster (55.21 km day(-1): SD 6.68) than harnessed individuals (39.80 km day(-1); SD 6.19); whilst no discernable difference in dive performance could be found between the two groups of study animals. Temperature loggers were attached to the carapace of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) at Ascension Island and Cyprus and to loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) at Cyprus, in order to record the ambient temperature experienced by individuals during the internesting interval, i.e. the period between consecutive clutches being laid. Internesting intervals were relatively short (10-14 days) and mean ambient temperatures relatively warm (27-28degreesC), compared to previous observations for these species nesting in Japan, although a single internesting interval versus temperature relationship described all the data for these two species from the different areas. The implication is that water temperature has both a common and a profound effect on the length of the internesting interval for these two species: internesting intervals are shorter when the water is warmer. Potential fecundity, number of oocytes in the mature ovary, and realized fecundity, number of eggs extruded and attached to the pleopods of female Nephrops, caught at the start of the incubation period were estimated for females from the eastern and western Irish Sea grounds. Potential fecundity was found to differ significantly between eastern and western Irish Sea stocks, while realized fecundity did not differ between areas. Inter-year comparison of realized fecundity, and effective fecundity (the number of mature eggs on the pleopods of females at the end of the incubation period) in the western Irish Sea stocks revealed no significant variation over time. Egg loss during the transition from oocytes in the ovary to mature eggs increased with female size, ranging from 40% at 25 mm carapace length (CL) to 65% at 40 mm CL. No relationship was found between egg diameter or volume and female size.

Fragments of chelonian carapace and plastral dermal plates are well-represented from archaeological sites in the world's dry and wet tropics. However, although these bones are easily identified at an element level, few archaeological reports have explored the potential of using features of form and surface sculpturing as a way to refine that identification to genus or species. The ability to achieve such a refinement would benefit environmental and human subsistence strategy models alike. The objective of the current paper was to isolate recurrent and readily visible surface characteristics on the dermal plates from a selection of commonly occurring Southeast Asian hard- and soft-shelled turtles. Using these criteria, analysis is made of the chelonian assemblage from pre- and post-Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) cultural deposits in the West Mouth of Niah Cave. Detailed studies of larval development of Octolasmis angulata and Octolasmis cor are pivotal in understanding the larval morphological evolution as well as enhancing the functional ecology. Six planktotrophic naupliar stages and one non-feeding cyprid stage are documented in details for the first time for the two species of Octolasmis. Morphologically, the larvae of O. angulata and O. cor are similar in body size, setation patterns on the naupliar appendages, labrum, dorsal setae-pores, frontal horns, cyprid carapace, fronto-lateral gland pores, and lattice organs. Numbers of peculiarities were observed on the gnathobases of the antennae and mandible throughout the naupliar life-cycle. The setation pattern on the naupliar appendages are classified based on the segmentation on the naupliar appendages. The nauplius VI of both species undergoes a conspicuous change before metamorphosis into cyprid stage. The cyprid structures begin to form and modify beneath the naupliar body towards the end of stage VI. This study emphasises the importance of the pedunculate barnacle larval developmental studies not only to comprehend the larval morphological evolution but also to fill in the gaps in understanding the modification of the naupliar structures to adapt into the cyprid life-style.

Two species of caridean shrimps are newly recorded from hydrothermal vents on the Manus Basin, southwestern Pacific, at depths of 1540-1577m. Lebbeus manus, new species, is related to L.curvirostris Zarenkov, 1976, L.elegans Komai, Hayashi & Kohtsuka, 2004, L.longipes (Kobjakova, 1936), L.vicinus vicinus (Rathbun, 1902) and L.vicinus motereyensis (Wicksten & Mendez, 1982) because of the lack of strap-like epipods on the second and third pereopods; but characters of the rostrum, carapace and abdomen immediately distinguish the new species from the these five taxa. Subadult and juvenile specimens of Nematocarcinus are referred to N.sp.aff.exilis, but their definite identification is postponed until additional specimens become available for study. There are a few minor differences between the present Manus specimens and European specimens representing N.exilis (Bate, 1888), suggesting that the Manus population may indeed represent a separate species.

True crabs are the most fascinating group of organisms among the decapod crustaceans. Great importance is attached at present to the increased exploitation of these animals and therefore there is great scope for further development of their fishery. They have a broad and hard carapace, massive chelate legs, bent abdomen and exhibit high degree of adaptation to the environment. They show pelagic, benthic, intertidal, burrowing and terrestrial modes of life. Their commensal association with other invertebrates, their breeding behaviour and life history are of great interest to biologists. More than six hundred species of crabs are known to occur in Indian waters and among them about eight species form a regular fishery along the entire stretch of peninsular India (Rao §§_al., 1973) round the year. Crab fishery in India is fast developing and there is vast scope for them as there are many more potential species. Among the various crustacean diets, crabs are celebrated for deliciousness and for nutritional richness. In recent days, crab food items have become more popular and gained global reception. These resources can also be augmented further by culturing them in ponds in the future. Information on biology and ecology of constituent species go a long way not only in effective exploitation and regulation of the respective fishery resources but also helps in evolving a suitable gear for their capture. Information collected on the national level in various aspects as reproduction, growth rate, larval development, parasites, diseases, nutritive values etc. will be of help in evolving a national policy for the effective utilisation and conservation of this resource. They also provide the baseline information for undertaking any purposeful and meaningful culture activities. Information on the various aspects mentioned above is very much restricted in true crabs and hence the present study
