The results of numerical simulation of plasma-based, porous, template-assisted nanofabrication of Au nanodot arrays on highly-doped silicon taking into account typical electron density of low-temperature plasma of 1017-1018 m-3 and electron temperature of 2-5 eV are reported here. Three-dimensional microscopic topography of ion flux distribution over the outer and inner surfaces of the nanoporous template is obtained via numerical simulation of Au ion trajectories in the plasma sheath, in the close proximity of, and inside the nanopores. It is shown that, by manipulating the electron temperature, the cross-sheath potential drop, and by additionally altering the structure of the nanoporous template, one can control the ion fluxes within the nanopores, and eventually maximize the ion deposition onto the top surface of the developing crystalline Au nanodots (see top panel in the figure). In the same time, this procedure allows one to minimize amorphous deposits on the sidewalls that clutter and may eventually close the nanopores, thus disrupting the nanodot growth process, as it is shown in the bottom panel in the figure on the right.

Single or multiple factors implicated in subsoil constraints including salinity, sodicity, and phytotoxic concentrations of chloride (Cl) are present in many Vertosols including those occurring in Queensland, Australia. The variable distribution and the complex interactions that exist between these constraints limit the agronomic or management options available to manage the soil with these subsoil constraints. The identification of crops and cultivars adapted to these adverse subsoil conditions and/or able to exploit subsoil water may be an option to maintain productivity of these soils. We evaluated relative performance of 5 winter crop species, in terms of grain yields, nutrient concentration, and ability to extract soil water, grown on soils with various levels and combinations of subsoil constraints in 19 field experiments over 2 years. Subsoil constraints were measured by levels of soil Cl, electrical conductivity of the saturation extract (ECse), and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP). Increasing levels of subsoil constraints significantly decreased maximum depth of water extraction, grain yield, and plant-available water capacity for all the 5 crops and more so for chickpea and durum wheat than bread wheat, barley, or canola. Increasing soil Cl levels had a greater restricting effect on water availability than did ECse and ESP. We developed empirical relationships between soil Cl, ECse, and ESP and crop lower limit (CLL) for estimating subsoil water extraction by 5 winter crops. However, the presence of gypsum influenced the ability to predict CLL based on the levels of ECse. Stronger relationships between apparent unused plant-available water (CLL - LL15; LL15 is lower limit at -1.5 MPa) and soil Cl concentrations than ESP or ECse suggested that the presence of high Cl in these soils most likely inhibited the subsoil water extraction by the crops. This was supported by increased sodium (Na) and Cl concentration with a corresponding decrease in calcium (Ca) and potassium (K) in young mature leaf of bread wheat, durum wheat, and chickpea with increasing levels of subsoil constraints. Of the 2 ions, Na and Cl, the latter appears to be more damaging than the former, resulting in plant dieback and reduced grain yields.

O objetivo deste estudo in vitro foi avaliar por meio da fluorescência de Raios X, oefeito remineralizante de dois diferentes princípios bioativos contidos no Desensibilize Nano P (nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio) e no GC Tooth Mousse (CPP-ACP,fosfopeptídios de caseína e fosfato de cálcio amorfo) assim como da saliva artificial e do fluoreto de sódio gel neutro no esmalte dental bovino submetido a desafio erosivo. Foram utilizados 20 incisivos bovinos, seccionados na linha amelo-cementária, fixados em resina epóxi e padronizados pela planificação da superfície. Foram obtidos 20 corpos de prova (CP) que foram divididos aleatoriamente em 4 grupos. Todos os dentes foram avaliadosinicialmente para a obtenção da contagem dos elementos fósforo (P), cálcio (Ca) e estrôncio (Sr) interpretados a partir de um espectro de Fluorescência de Raios X obtidos pelo Artax 800. Após uma semana da medição inicial, cada grupo de amostras foi imerso em uma solução de 10 ml de ácido cítrico a 2% (pH 2,6) por 90 minutos. Imediatamente após obtenção dos espectros dos dentes submetidos ao desafio erosivo, cada grupo recebeu seus tratamentos correspondentes. Grupo 1 (Saliva) - saliva; Grupo 2 (Flúor) - Flúor; Grupo 3 (Nano P) - Desensibilize Nano P; Grupo 4 (Recaldent) - GC Tooth Mousse. A leitura e os tratamentos eram realizados a cada sete dias sendo repetidos por de 3 semanas. Foi utilizado inicialmente o teste de Bonferroni para comparação das médias de P, Ca e Sr dentro de cada grupo, com um nível de significância de 0,05 (p=0,05), que demonstrou remineralização efetiva na terceira semana de tratamento no grupo Nano P. Posteriormente foi utilizado o teste T-Student para comparação das médias de P, Ca e Sr entre os diferentes grupos, também com um nível de significância de 0,05 (p=0,05). O grupo Nano P foi mais efetivo do que todos os outros grupos e o grupo Saliva menos efetivo que Fluor e Recaldent após três semanas de tratamento. Nestas condições expirimentais in vitro a pasta Desensibilize Nano P foi eficaz noprocesso de remineralização dental desde a primeira semana de tratamento e estável após 3 semanas de tratamento do que os tratamentos com Saliva, Flúor e GC Tooth Mousse.

Studies were carried out to assess some macro and trace elements of mineral composition of the male and female Heterobranchus bidorsalis adults exposed to graded concentrations (1.00-8.00m/L-1) of Bonny-light crude oil (BLCO). The experiment was monitored for 4 days (toxicity) and 42days (recovery) periods. Significant decreases (P < 0.05)in the sodium (Na), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), vanadium (Va), lead (Pb) and manganese (Mn) contents of the male H. bidorsalis corresponded with the increasing concentrations of BLCO. In contrast, the female fishes recorded significant increases (P < 0.05) in the values of the above elements in their tissues as the concentrations of BLCO increased. Furthermore, the values of Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, Zn, Fe, Va, Pb and Mn recorded in the male fishes where generally lower than those of their female counterparts and the control fish. Increased values of these elements were also recorded during the recovery periods (days 14, 28 and 42) of this study in the magnitudes of 15% at day 14, 20% at day 28 and 20% at day 42. This implied that the removal of crude oil stress during this period improved the quantity of these minerals deposited in the fish tissues. The highest percent proportion of Zn and the lowest proportion of Pb recorded in both male and female H. bidorsalis adults agreed with the report of other workers for other fish species. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar in vitro por meio da Fluorescência de Raios X por Dispersão de Energia (XRF), Microdureza Vickers (MV) e Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) o efeito remineralizante de diferentes princípios bioativos, tais quais, nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio (nanoHAp) associadas ou não a fluoreto, fosfopeptídeos de caseína do leite e fosfato de cálcio amorfo (CPP-ACP) associados ou não a fluoreto, fluoreto de sódio e saliva no esmalte dental bovino submetido a ciclagem des-remineralizante simulando lesão erosiva por alto desafio ácido. Foram obtidos 58 corpos de prova (CP) a partir de 58 incisivos bovinos que foram divididos aleatoriamente em 8 grupos, com 7 CP cada um e 2 CP para obtenção de imagem em MEV do esmalte hígido. Cada grupo foi denominado conforme os respectivos tratamentos a serem utilizados. Grupo 1 (G1) Controle; Grupo 2 (G2) Desensibilize Nano P experimental (nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio); Grupo 3 (G3) Desensibilize Nano P (nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio e flúor); Grupo4 (G4) GC Tooth Mousse (CPP-ACP, fosfopeptídios de caseína e fosfato de cálcio amorfo Recaldent ); Grupo 5 (G5) GC Tooth Mousse Plus (CPP-ACP, fosfopeptídios de caseína e fosfato de cálcio amorfo Recaldent + 900 ppm de flúor); Grupo 6 (G6) solução aquosa de fluoreto de sódio (0,05%); Grupo 7 (G7) solução aquosa de nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio (0,375%) e Grupo 8 (G8) solução aquosa de nanopartículas de hidroxiapatita de cálcio (0,375%) + flúor (0,05%). Foram obtidos os valores de XRF e MV antes e depois do tratamento. Durante um período experimental de 10 dias, os CPs foram submetidos a um processo cíclico de des-remineralização incluindo vários ataques diários com ácido cítrico 0,05M (pH 2,3), 6 vezes de 2 minutos ao dia, bem como as aplicações das soluções teste e períodos de remineralização em saliva artificial. O tempo entre os ciclos era de 1,5 h. Foram obtidas imagens em MEV para análise da superfície após o tratamento. Através da análise estatística pelo teste t student (p = 0,05), foram encontrados os seguintes resultados: o grupo controle teve uma desmineralização considerada severa; houve aumento na contagem de P em todos os grupos que receberam tratamento, exceto o G1, igualando ou até mesmo aumentando no caso do G5, em relação a contagem inicial; houve aumento na contagem de Ca em todos os grupos que receberam tratamento, exceto no G1, igualando ou até mesmo aumentando no caso do G4, em relação a contagem inicial; houve perda de microdureza superficial em todos os grupos; o G7 teve comportamento similar ao G1 e o G3 teve comportamento inferior ao G5 em relação ao P. E todos os outros grupos tiveram comportamento superior ao controle; o G4 e o G5 tiveram um comportamento superior ao G2 em relação ao Ca. O G5 teve comportamento superior ao G3 também em relação ao Ca e todos os grupos foram superiores ao controle; o G7 teve comportamento similar ao controle em relação a microdureza superficial e todos os outros grupos foram superiores ao controle.

The ultrasmoothness of diamond-like carbon coatings is explained by an atomistic/continuum multiscale model. At the atomic scale, carbon ion impacts induce downhill currents in the top layer of a growing film. At the continuum scale, these currents cause a rapid smoothing of initially rough substrates by erosion of hills into neighboring hollows. The predicted surface evolution is in excellent agreement with atomic force microscopy measurements. This mechanism is general, as shown by similar simulations for amorphous silicon. It explains the recently reported smoothing of multilayers and amorphous transition metal oxide films and underlines the general importance of impact-induced downhill currents for ion deposition, polishing, and nanopattering.

The acute toxicity and effects of diazinon on some haematological parameters of kutum (Rutilus frisii kutum, Kamensky, 1901) weighing 613.33 g±157.06 g were studied under static water quality conditions at 15°C ± 2ºC in winter and spring 2009. The effective physical and chemical parameters of water were pH= 7-8.2, dh= 300mg/L (caco3), DO= 7 ppm and T= 15°C±2ºC. The first test was primarily to determine the effects of acute toxicity (LC5096 h) of the agricultural toxicant diazinon (emulsion 60%) on kutum male brood stocks. For this purpose, 4 treatments were used to test toxicity; each treatment was repeated in 3 tanks with 9 fish per treatment and with 180 litres water capacity. After obtaining the final results, the information was analysed statistically with Probit version 1.5 (USEPA, 1985), and we determined the LC10, LC50 and LC90 values at 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours and 96 hours; the maximum allowable concentration value (LC5096 h divided by 10) (TRC, 1984); and the degree of toxicity. The second stage of testing consists of four treatments: LC0= 0 as experimental treatment, treatment A with a concentration of LC1= 0.107 mg/L, treatment B with concentration of LC5= 0.157 mg/L, treatment C with concentration of MAC value= 0.04 mg/L. Male brood stocks of kutum were treated with these concentrations for 45 days. Experiments were carried out under static conditions based on the standard TRC, 1984 method over 45 days. Our results show that long-term exposure to diazinon causes a decrease in the erythrocyte count (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb), haematocrit (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), leucocyte count (WBC), lymphocyte, testosterone, iron (Fe), sodium (Na), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and cholinesterase (CHeS). In addition, diazinon also causes an increase in prolymphocyte, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and adrenaline (P<0.05). There are no significant effects on monocyte, eosinophil, magnesium (Mg), chloride (Cl), glucose (BS), urea (BUN), uric acid (U.A), triglyceride (TG), calcium (Ca), albumin (Alb), total protein (TP), cortisol, noradrenaline and high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels in kutum male brood stocks (P>0.05). Pathology results showed toxin diazinon no effect on average weight and fish body length, the average weight of heart, brain, spleen, liver, kidney and liver index but caueses decrease of gonad weigth and gonad index and also, cause complications of tissue necrosis, vascular congestion, inflammation in the liver, a sharp reduction in the number of glomeruli, necrosis, vascular congestion and haemorage in the kidney, capsule thickening and fibrosis, atrophy, vascular congestion, macrophages release increased, increasing sediment Hemosiderine and thickening of artery walls in the spleen, atrophy, fibrosis and necrosis in testis , vascular congestion, increased distance between the myocardium and fibrous string in heart and neuronal loss, vascular congestion and edema in the brain of kutum male brood stocks.

An 8-week growth trial was carried out in a semi-recirculation system to investigate the effect of high dietary starch levels on the growth performance, blood chemistry, starch utilization and body composition of gibel carp (Carassius auratus var. gibelio). Five isonitrogenous and isocarloric experimental diets were formulated to contain different starch levels (24%, 28%, 32%, 36% and 40% respectively). Triplicate groups of fish (24 fish per tank with an average body weight, of 8.5 g) were assigned to each diet. The results showed that dietary carbohydrate levels significantly affected the growth performance, hepatopancreatic lipid content, pyruvate kinase (PK) activity and whole-body lipid content. Growth performance, body crude lipid and plasma glucose concentrations showed a decreasing trend with an increase in dietary starch from 24% to 40%. Pyruvate kinase activities and hepatopancreatic lipid content showed an increasing trend with the dietary starch increasing from 24% to 32%, and then a decreasing trend with the dietary starch increasing from 32% to 40%. No significant difference in the hepatopancreatic hexokinase (HK) activity, plasma triglyceride contents, body crude protein, ash and calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents was observed between different treatments. In conclusion, higher dietary starch levels (32-40%) significantly (P < 0.05) decreased the growth of gibel carp in the present study.

臭氧层损耗导致的地球表面UV-B辐射增强以及温室气体增多引起的气候变暖是当今两大全球环境问题。UV-B辐射增强和气候变暖对陆地植物和生态系统产生深远影响,并已成为全球变化研究的重要议题。作为世界第三极的青藏高原,UV-B 辐射增强以及气候变暖现象尤为突出。本试验所在林区是青藏高原东缘的主要林区,具有大面积的亚高山人工针叶成熟林,在全球变化背景下该森林的天然更新潜力如何是急待回答的重要问题。基于此,本研究围绕森林树种的种子和幼苗这一更新的重要阶段,开展了气候变暖、UV-B辐射增强和联合胁迫对云杉种子萌发及幼苗定居影响的研究,旨在全球变化背景下,探讨全球变暖、UV-B 辐射增强和联合胁迫是否对西南地区大面积人工亚高山针叶林更新的种子萌发和幼苗定居阶段产生影响。 本文以青藏高原东缘亚高山针叶林主要树种云杉为研究对象,研究云杉种子萌发及幼苗的生长和生理对UV-B辐射增强与气候变暖的响应。采用UV-B荧光灯(UV-lamp)来模拟增强的UV-B 辐射,此外,采用开顶式有机玻璃罩(OTCs)来模拟气候变暖。本试验包括四个处理:(1)大气UV-B 辐射+大气温度(C);(2)大气UV-B 辐射+模拟气候变暖(W);(3)增强的UV-B辐射+大气温度(U);(4)增强的UV-B辐射+模拟气候变暖(U+W)。 根据本试验结果,UV-B辐射增强对云杉种子萌发没有显著影响,它对萌发云杉幼苗的影响主要体现在幼叶展开以后。根据两年的试验结果,增强的UV-B辐射降低了云杉幼苗抗氧化酶活性,降低了抗氧化物质的含量,此外,造成了膜质的过氧化,表现为MDA在针叶中的积累。增强的UV-B照射处理萌发云杉幼苗两年后,幼苗的生长受到显著抑制。我们的结果显示,OTCs分别提高了空气(10 cm)和土壤(5 cm)温度1.74℃和0.94 ℃。增温显著地促进了云杉种子提前萌发,提高了萌发速率和萌发比率,而且,明显地促进了幼苗的生长,表现为株高和生物量累积的显著增长。此外增温还有利于云杉幼苗根的伸长生长以及生物量的累积,这可以使云杉幼苗更好地利用土壤中的水分和营养元素。 根据本试验结果,温度升高显著地促进了增强UV-B辐射下云杉萌发幼苗的生长,这说明,温度升高缓解了UV-B辐射增强对云杉萌发幼苗的负面影响。这种缓解作用可能是温度升高对UV-B辐射增强处理下幼苗的抗氧化系统活性改善的结果。温度升高还缓解了高UV-B辐射对云杉幼苗根生长的抑制作用,这也可能是增温缓解伤害的原因之一。此外,根据我们的试验结果,增温与UV-B辐射增强联合作用(U+W)下云杉萌发幼苗的生长状况好于大气温度与大气UV-B辐射联合(C)处理,表现为株高、地径、根长和生物量积累均高于C处理,因此可以推断,UV-B辐射增强与气候变暖同时存在对萌发幼苗在两年之内的生长没有产生抑制作用,也就是说,气候变暖的缓解作用完全弥补了UV-B辐射增强的有害作用。 同样,增强的UV-B辐射显著影响了云杉幼苗的光合作用,表现为净光合速率(Pn)和表观量子效率(Φ)的提高,此外,根据我们的试验结果,它还造成了PSII的光抑制。增强的UV-B辐射显著抑制了云杉幼苗对营养元素的吸收,表现为大量营养元素、碳、钙、镁和锌含量的降低,但是,它却显著促进了铁在植株体内的积累。增温显著地提高了净光合速率,但是,它对光系统II(PSII)的光化学效率影响不大。温度升高缓解了UV-B增强对云杉幼苗光合作用的伤害,表现为净光合速率、表观量子效率以及PSII光化学效率的提高。此外,温度升高还缓解了UV-B辐射增强对离子吸收的抑制作用。 Enhanced UV-B radiation due to the reduction of O3 layer and global warming induced by increased greenhouse gases in the air have become the two pressing aspects of global climate changes. Moreover, enhanced UV-B radiation and warming have profound and long-term impacts on terrestrial plants and ecosystems, and the studies focusing on the two factors have attracted many attentions. Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is the third in elevation in the world, and enhanced UV-B radiation and climate warming are especially prominent in this region. Our research located in the main forest belt in the eastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau where large areas of subalpine coniferous forests distributed. Based on that, we carried out a research to study the effects of enhanced UV-B radiation and climate warming on seed germination and seedlings growth of seedlings which are the important basic stage in forest regeneration. This research was arranged by a complete factorial design and included two factors (UV-B radiation and temperature) with two levels. The UV-lamps were used to manipulate the supplemental UV-B radiation and open-top chambers (OTCs) were adopted to increase temperature. The four treatments were: (1) C, ambient UV-B without warming; (2) U, enhanced UV-B without warming; (3) W, ambient UV-B with OTCs warming; (4) U+W, enhanced UV-B with OTCs warming. The main results were exhibited as follows: 1. Based on our results in this research, OTCs increased temperature on average 1.74℃ in air (10 cm above ground) and 0.92 ℃ in soil (5 cm beneath ground). Furthermore, OTCs also slightly reduced soil moisture and relative air humidity, however, the differences was not statistically significant. 2. Our results showed that enhanced UV-B had no significant effects on the seeds germination of P. asperata. Enhanced UV-B affected sprouts of P. asperata until the needles unfolded. During two years, enhanced UV-B inhibited the efficiency of the antioxidant defense systems, and as a result, it induced oxidant stress and the accumulation of MDA in needles. After two years of exposure to enhanced UV-B, the growth of P. asperata sprouts was markedly restrained compared with those under ambient UV-B radiation and temperature (C). Warming significantly stimulated the germination speed and increased the germination rate of P. asperata seeds. In the next place, it prominently facilitated the growth of P. asperata sprouts, represented as improvements in stem elongation and biomass accumulation. Furthermore, warming also increased root growth of P. asperata sprouts, which could made sprouts more efficient to use water and nutrient elements in soil. In this research, warming alleviated the deleterious effects of enhanced UV-B on P. asperata sprouts. It markedly stimulated the growth of P. asperata sprouts exposed to enhanced UV-B. The ease effects of warming on the abilities of the antioxidant defense systems might account for its amending effects on growth. After two years of exposure to enhanced UV-B radiation and warming, the growth of P. asperata sprouts was better than those under ambient UV-B radiation without warming (C), which could be seen from the higher plant height, basal diameter, root length and total biomass accumulation compared with C. 3. Enhanced UV-B radiation significantly influenced the photosynthesis processes of two-year old P. asperata seedlings. Our results showed that enhanced UV-B reduced the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and the apparent quantum efficiency (Φ), and induced photoinhibition of photosynthetic system II (PSII). Enhanced UV-B significantly decreased the concentration of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn), however, it increased the accumulation of iron (Fe) in the whole plant of P. asperata seedlings. Warming significantly stimulated Pn of P. asperata seedlings but it had no prominent impacts on the photochemical efficiency of PSII. In our research, warming also alleviated the harmful effects of enhanced UV-B on photosynthesis and absorption of ions of P. asperata seedlings. It increased Pn, Φ and the photochemical efficiency of PSII in seedlings exposed to enhanced UV-B. Moreover, warming also increased the absorption of ions of the seedlings exposed to enhanced UV-B radiation.

Element profile was investigated for their use to trace the geographical origin of rice (Oryza sativa L.) samples. The concentrations of 13 elements (calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), boron (B), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), selenium (Se), molybdenum (Mo), and cadmium (Cd)) were determined in the rice samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission and mass spectrometry. Most of the essential elements for human health in rice were within normal ranges except for Mo and Se. Mo concentrations were twice as high as those in rice from Vietnam and Spain. Meanwhile, Se concentrations were three times lower in the whole province compared to the Chinese average level of 0.088 mg/kg. About 12% of the rice samples failed the Chinese national food safety standard of 0.2 mg/kg for Cd. Combined with the multi-elemental profile in rice, the principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant function analysis (DFA) and Fibonacci index analysis (FIA) were applied to discriminate geographical origins of the samples. Results indicated that the FIA method could achieve a more effective geographical origin classification compared with PCA and DFA, due to its efficiency in making the grouping even when the elemental variability was so high that PCA and DFA showed little discriminatory power. Furthermore, some elements were identified as the most powerful indicators of geographical origin: Ca, Ni, Fe and Cd. This suggests that the newly established methodology of FIA based on the ionome profile can be applied to determine the geographical origin of rice.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION:
Transient receptor potential (TRP) channels comprise a group of nonselective calcium-permeable cationic channels, which are polymodal sensors of environmental stimuli such as thermal changes and chemicals. TRPM8 and TRPA1 are cold-sensing TRP channels activated by moderate cooling and noxious cold temperatures, respectively. Both receptors have been identified in trigeminal ganglion neurones, and their expression in nonneuronal cells is now the focus of much interest. The aim of this study was to investigate the molecular and functional expression of TRPA1 and TRPM8 in dental pulp fibroblasts.
METHODS:
Human dental pulp fibroblasts were derived from healthy molar teeth. Gene and protein expression was determined by polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. Cellular localization was investigated by immunohistochemistry, and TRP functionality was determined by Ca(2+) microfluorimetry.
RESULTS:
Polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting showed gene and protein expression of both TRPA1 and TRPM8 in fibroblast cells in culture. Immunohistochemistry studies showed that TRPA1 and TRPM8 immunoreactivity co-localized with the human fibroblast surface protein. In Ca(2+) microfluorimetry studies designed to determine the functionality of TRPA1 and TRPM8 in pulp fibroblasts, we showed increased intracellular calcium ([Ca(2+)](i)) in response to the TRPM8 agonist menthol, the TRPA1 agonist cinnamaldehyde, and to cool and noxious cold stimuli, respectively. The responses to agonists and thermal stimuli were blocked in the presence of specific TRPA1 and TRPM8 antagonists.
CONCLUSIONS:
Human dental pulp fibroblasts express TRPA1 and TRPM8 at the molecular, protein, and functional levels, indicating a possible role for fibroblasts in mediating cold responses in human teeth.

The adaptor protein-2 sigma subunit (AP2sigma;2) is pivotal for clathrin-mediated endocytosis of plasma membrane constituents such as the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR). Mutations of the AP2sigma;2 Arg15 residue result in familial hypocalciuric hypercalcaemia type 3 (FHH3), a disorder of extracellular calcium (Ca<inf>o</inf><sup>2+</sup>) homeostasis. To elucidate the role of AP2sigma;2 in Ca<inf>o</inf><sup>2+</sup> regulation, we investigated 65 FHH probands, without other FHH-associated mutations, for AP2sigma;2 mutations, characterized their functional consequences and investigated the genetic mechanisms leading to FHH3. AP2sigma;2 mutations were identified in 17 probands, comprising 5 Arg15Cys, 4 Arg15His and 8 Arg15Leu mutations. A genotype-phenotype correlation was observed with the Arg15Leu mutation leading to marked hypercalcaemia. FHH3 probands harboured additional phenotypes such as cognitive dysfunction. All three FHH3-causing AP2sigma;2 mutations impaired CaSR signal transduction in a dominant-negative manner. Mutational bias was observed at the AP2sigma;2 Arg15 residue as other predicted missense substitutions (Arg15Gly, Arg15Pro and Arg15Ser), which also caused CaSR loss-of-function, were not detected in FHH probands, and these mutations were found to reduce the numbers of CaSR-expressing cells. FHH3 probands had significantly greater serum calcium (sCa) and magnesium (sMg) concentrations with reduced urinary calcium to creatinine clearance ratios (CCCR) in comparison with FHH1 probands with CaSR mutations, and a calculated index of sCa × sMg/100 × CCCR, which was ≥ 5.0, had a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 83 and 86%, respectively, for FHH3. Thus, our studies demonstrate AP2sigma;2 mutations to result in a more severe FHH phenotype with genotype-phenotype correlations, and a dominant-negative mechanism of action with mutational bias at the Arg15 residue.

Introduction : L’hypophosphatémie survient couramment après hépatectomie partielle. La régénération du foie était l’explication initiale. Cependant, les pertes rénales de phosphate observées récemment suggèrent que l’hypophosphatémie est probablement d’origine rénale. Nous avons donc mesuré la fraction d’excrétion urinaire de phosphate (FePO4) après hépatectomie partielle et nous avons étudié le rôle de la parathormone (PTH) et des phosphatonines dans cette hypophosphatémie. Méthodes : Les taux sériques de phosphate, de calcium ionisé, de PTH intacte, de « fibroblast growth factor- 23 » (FGF-23) intact et carboxyle-terminal, de FGF-7, de la « frizzled-related protein-4 » (FRP-4) et de HCO3- ainsi que le pH et la FePO4 ont été mesurés avant la chirurgie et aux jours postopératoires (po) 1, 2, 3, 5 et 7, chez 18 patients ayant subi une résection hépatique partielle. Résultats : Le phosphate sérique était à son plus bas niveau (0,66 ± 0,33 mmol/l; p < 0,001) au jour po 2. La FePO4 culminait à 25,07 ± 2,26 % au jour po 1 (p < 0,05) et était associée avec le taux de la parathormone intacte (r = 0,65; p = 0,006). Le calcium ionisé sérique diminuait à 1,1 ± 0,01 mmol/l, (p < 0,01) en même temps que la parathormone intacte s’élevait à 8,8 ± 0,9 pmol/l, (p < 0,01) au jour po 1; ces deux paramètres étaient inversement corrélés (r = -0,062; p = 0,016). Le FGF-23 intact atteignait son plus bas niveau à 7,8 ± 6,9 pg/ml (p < 0,001), au jour po 3; les valeurs de FGF-23 étaient corrélées avec la diminution du phosphate sérique aux jours po 0, 3, 5 et 7 (p < 0,001). Le FGF-23 carboxyle-terminal, le FGF-7 et la FRP-4 n’étaient pas reliés au phosphate sérique ni à la FePO4. Conclusion : L’hypophosphatémie observée après résection hépatique partielle est liée à une augmentation de la FePO4 qui est sans aucune relation avec les FGF-23 intact ou carboxyle-terminal, le FGF-7 et la FRP-4. La PTH intacte était associée avec la FePO4 uniquement au jour po 1. L’hypophosphatémie après résection hépatique est secondaire à d’autres facteurs non encore identifiés.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are relatively new computational tools that have found extensive utilization in solving many complex real-world problems. This paper describes how an ANN can be used to identify the spectral lines of elements. The spectral lines of Cadmium (Cd), Calcium (Ca), Iron (Fe), Lithium (Li), Mercury (Hg), Potassium (K) and Strontium (Sr) in the visible range are chosen for the investigation. One of the unique features of this technique is that it uses the whole spectrum in the visible range instead of individual spectral lines. The spectrum of a sample taken with a spectrometer contains both original peaks and spurious peaks. It is a tedious task to identify these peaks to determine the elements present in the sample. ANNs capability of retrieving original data from noisy spectrum is also explored in this paper. The importance of the need of sufficient data for training ANNs to get accurate results is also emphasized. Two networks are examined: one trained in all spectral lines and other with the persistent lines only. The network trained in all spectral lines is found to be superior in analyzing the spectrum even in a noisy environment.

A field experiment with millet (Pennisetum glaucum L.), sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) and groundnut (Arachnis hypogeae L.) was conducted on severely P-deficient acid sandy soils of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso to measure changes in pH and nutrient availability as affected by distance from the root surface and by mineral fertiliser application. Treatments included three rates of phosphorus (P) and four levels of nitrogen (N) application. Bulk, rhizosphere and rhizoplane soils were sampled at 35, 45 and 75 DAS in 1997 and at 55 and 65 DAS in 1998. Regardless of the cropping system and level of mineral fertiliser applied, soil pH consistently increased between 0.7 and two units from the bulk soil to the rhizoplane of millet. Similar pH gradients were observed in cowpea, but pH changes were much smaller in sorghum with a difference of only 0.3 units. Shifts in pH led to large increases in nutrient availability close to the roots. Compared with the bulk soil, available P in the rhizoplane was between 190 and 270% higher for P-Bray and between 360 and 600% higher for P-water. Exchangeable calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) levels were also higher in the millet rhizoplane than in the bulk soil, whereas exchangeable aluminium (Al) levels decreased with increasing pH close to the root surface. The results suggest an important role of root-induced pH increases for crops to cope with acidity-induced nutrient deficiency and Al stress of soils in the Sudano-Sahelian zone of West Africa.
