The contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the vertical shear strength of continuous steel-concrete composite beams are ignored in current design codes, which result in conservative designs. This paper investigates the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams in combined bending and shear by using the finite element analysis method. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to account for the geometric and material nonlinear behaviour of continuous composite beams. The finite element model is verified by experimental results and then used to study the effects of the concrete slab and shear connection on the vertical shear strength. The moment-shear interaction strength of continuous composite beams is also investigated by varying the moment/ shear ratio. It is shown that the concrete slab and composite action significantly increase the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams. Based on numerical results, design models are proposed for the vertical shear strength and moment-shear interaction of continuous composite beams. The proposed design models, which incorporates the effects of the concrete slab, composite action, stud pullout failure and web shear buckling, are compared with experimental results with good agreement. Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) columns have shown great potential as axial load carrying member and used widely in many mission critical infrastructures. However, attention is needed to strengthen these members where transverse impact force is expected to occur due to vehicle collisions. In this work, finite element (FE) model of carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthened CFST columns are developed and the effect of CFRP bond length is investigated under transverse impact loading. Initially the numerical models have been validated by comparing impact test results from literature. The validated models are then used for detail parametric studies by varying the length of externally bonded CFRP composites. The parameters considered for this research are impact velocity, impact mass, CFRP modulus, adhesive type, and axial static loading. It has been observed that the effect of CFRP strengthening is consistent after an optimum effective bond length of CFRP wrapping. The effect of effective bond length has been studied for above parameters. The results show that, under combined axial static and transverse impact loads CFST columns can successfully prevent global buckling failure by strengthening only 34% of column length. Therefore, estimation of effective bond length is essential to utilise the CFRP composites cost effectively.

Corrosion can affect the bond between reinforcing bars and concrete and hence the transfer of longitudinal stresses. Although a number of experimental studies on bond failure have been conducted in recent years, the findings have diverged rather widely, due primarily to differing test conditions. The present paper reports on an experimental programme consisting of eccentric pull-out tests run on corroded steel bars in specimens subjected to accelerated or natural corrosion. An axisymmetric bi-dimensional FE model with finite deformations initially developed to study bond mechanics with sound steel bars, has been enhanced to consider bond effects in corroded steel bars. The model simulation is compared to some of the experimental results for corroded and sound bars and the findings are analysed.

Advanced composite materials offer remarkable potential in the upgrade of civil engineering structures. The evolution of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) technologies and their versatility for applications in civil constructions require comprehensive and reliable codes of practice. Guidelines are available on the rehabilitation and retrofit of concrete structures with advanced composite materials. However, there is a need to develop appropriate design guidelines for CFRP strengthened steel structures. It is important to understand the bond characteristics between CFRP and steel plates. This paper describes a series of double strap shear tests loaded in tension to investigate the bond between CFRP sheets and steel plates. Both normal modulus (240 GPa) and high modulus (640 GPa) CFRPs were used in the test program. Strain gauges were mounted to capture the strain distribution along the CFRP length. Different failure modes were observed for joints with normal modulus CFRP and those with high modulus CFRP. The strain distribution along the CFRP length is similar for the two cases. A shorter effective bond length was obtained for joints with high modulus CFRP whereas larger ultimate load carrying capacity can be achieved for joints with normal modulus CFRP when the bond length is long enough.

Over the last decade advanced composite materials, like carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP), have increasingly been used in civil engineering infrastructure. The benefits of advanced composites are rapidly becoming evident. This paper focuses on the comparative performance of steel and concrete members retrofitted by carbon fibre reinforced polymers. The objective of this work is a systematic assessment and evaluation of the performance of CFRP for both the concrete and steel members available in the technical literature. Existing empirical and analytical models were studied. Comparison is made with respect to failure mode, bond characteristics, fatigue behaviour, durability, corrosion, load carrying capacity and force transfer. It is concluded that empirical expressions for the concrete-CFRP composite are not readily suited for direct use in the steel-CFRP composite. This paper identifies some of the major issues that need further investigation.

CFRP material has been widely used to strengthen concrete structures. There is an increasing trend of using CFRP in strengthening steel structures. The bond between steel and CFRP is a key issue. Relatively less work has been done on the bond between CFRP and a curved surface which is often found in tubular structures. This paper reports a study on the bond between CFRP and steel tubes. A series of tensile tests were conducted with different bond lengths and number of layers. The types of adhesive and specimen preparation methods varied in the testing program. High modulus CFRP was used. Tests were carried out to measure the modulus and tensile strength of CFRP. Strain gages were mounted on different layers of CFRP. The stress distributions across the layers of the CFRP were established. Models were developed to estimate the maximum load for a given CFRP arrangement.

Usage of new smart materials in retrofitting of structures has become popular within last decade. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) has been widely used in retrofitting and strengthening of concrete structures and its usage in metallic structures is still in the developing stage. The variation of mechanical properties of CFRP and the consequent effects on strengthening and retrofitting CFRP systems are yet to be investigated under different loading and environmental conditions. This paper presents the results of CFRP strengthened and retrofitted corroded steel plate double strap joints under tension. An accelerated corrosion cell has been developed to accelerate the corrosion of the steel samples and CFRP strengthened samples. The results show a direct comparison of bond characteristics of CFRP strengthened and retrofitted steel double strap joints.
