A series of bimetallic Ru-containing monometallic and bimetallic catalysts were prepared and tested for their activity for the hydrogenation of 2-butanone to 2-butanol at 30 °C and 3 bar H2. RuPt bimetallic catalysts were the most active for the reaction, with a ratio of 5 wt% Ru:1 wt% Pt on activated carbon (AC) found to be optimum. The activity of this bimetallic catalyst was more than double that of the sum of the activities of the monometallic Ru and Pt catalysts, providing evidence of a “bimetallic” effect. Structural analysis of the bimetallic catalysts revealed that they consisted of clusters of particles of the order of 1–2 nm. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that there were two types of particle on the surface of the bimetallic RuPt catalyst, specifically monometallic Ru and bimetallic RuPt particles. For the bimetallic particles, it was possible to fit the data with a model in which a Ru core of 1.1 nm is enclosed by two Pt-rich layers, the outer layer containing only 13 at% Ru. Pretreatment of the monometallic and bimetallic catalysts in hydrogen had a significant effect on the activity. Both the bimetallic and monometallic Ru-based catalysts showed a trend of decreasing activity with increasing temperature of prereduction in hydrogen. This loss of activity was almost fully reversible by exposure of the catalysts to air after reduction. The changing activity with exposure to different gas phase environments could not be attributed to changes in particle size or surface composition. It is proposed that the introduction of hydrogen results in a gradual smoothing of the surface and loss of defect sites; this process being reversible on introduction of air. These defect sites are particularly important for the dissociative adsorption of hydrogen, potentially the rate-determining step in this reaction.

Hydrogenation of tertiary amides, in particular, N-methylpyrrolidin-2-one, can be efficiently facilitated by a TiO(2)-supported bimetallic Pt/Re catalyst at low temperatures and pressures. Characterisation of the catalysts and kinetic tests have shown that the close interaction between the Re and Pt is crucial to the high activity observed. DFT calculations were used to examine a range of metal combinations and show that the role of the uncoordinated Re is to activate the C=O and that of the Pt is as a hydrogenation catalyst, removing intermediates from the catalyst surface. The rate enhancement observed on the TiO(2) support is thought to be due to the presence of oxygen vacancies allowing adsorption and weakening of the C=O bond. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. The structure, thermal stability, and catalytic behavior of a novel highly dispersed silica-supported Pd/Sn catalyst prepared by an organometallic route have been examined by X-ray photoelectron, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray absorption, fine structure spectroscopies, the latter two measurements being carried outwith an in situ reaction cell. Additional reactor measurements were performed on a more Sn-rich catalyst and on a pure Pd catalyst. Varying the temperature of reduction induced large variations in catalytic performance toward ethyne-coupling reactions. These changes are understandable in terms of the destruction of SnO2-like structures surrounding the Pd core, yielding a skin of metallic Sn which subsequently undergoes intermixing with Pd. The overall thermal and catalytic behavior of these highly dispersed materials accords well with the analogous single-crystal model system.

Acetylene coupling to benzene on the Pd(lll) surface is greatly enhanced by the presence of catalytically inert Au atoms. LEED and Auger spectroscopy show that progressive annealing of Au overlayers on Pd(lll) leads to the formation of a series of random surface alloys with continuously varying composition. Cyclization activity is a strong function of surface composition-the most efficient catalyst corresponds to a surface of composition similar to 85% Pd. CO TPD and HREELS data show that acetylene cyclization activity is not correlated with the availability of singleton Pd atoms, nor just with the presence of 3-fold pure Pd sites-the preferred chemisorption site for C2H2 on Pd{111}. The data can be quantitatively rationalized in terms of a simple model in which catalytic activity is dominated by Pd6Au and Pd-7 surface ensembles, allowance being made for the known degree to which pure Pd{111} decomposes the reactant and product molecules.

The aqueous phase reforming (APR) of xylitol was studied in a continuous fixed bed reactor over three catalysts: Pt/Al2O3, Pt/TiO2 and Pt-Re/TiO2. The data obtained in the case of the monometallic Pt catalysts was compared to the bimetallic Pt-Re sample. The effect of Re addition on the catalyst stability, activity, product formation and selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was studied. The bimetallic catalyst demonstrated a higher selectivity to alkanes compared to the monometallic samples. The monometallic catalyst was more selective toward hydrogen formation. A plausible reaction scheme explaining differences in selectivity toward hydrogen and alkanes was proposed and discussed.

Pt and PtSn catalysts were studied for n-butanol electro-oxidation at various temperatures. PtSn showed a higher activity towards butanol electro-oxidation compared to Pt in acidic media. The onset potential for n-butanol oxidation on PtSn is ~520 mV lower than that found on Pt, and significantly lower activation energy was found for PtSn compared with that for Pt.

We have discovered that the current protocols to assemble Au nanoparticles based on DNA hybridization do not work well with the small metal nanoparticles (e.g. 5 nm Au, 3.6 nm Pt and 3.2 nm Ru particles). Further investigations revealed the presence of strong interaction between the oligonucleotide backbone and the surface of the small metal nanoparticles. The oligonucleotides in this case are recumbent on the particle surface and are therefore not optimally oriented for hybridization. The nonspecific adsorption of oligonucleotides on small metal nanoparticles must be overcome before DNA hybridization can be accepted as a general assembly method. Two methods have been suggested as possible solutions to this problem. One is based on the use of stabilizer molecules which compete with the oligonucleotides for adsorption on the metal nanoparticle surface. Unfortunately, the reported success of this approach in small Au nanoparticles (using K₂BSPP) and Au films (using 6-mercapto-1-hexanol) could not be extended to the assembly of Pt and Ru nanoparticles by DNA hybridization. The second approach is to simply use larger metal particles. Indeed most reports on the DNA hybridization induced assembly of Au nanoparticles have made use of relatively large particles (>10 nm), hinting at a weaker non-specific interaction between the oligonucleotides and large Au nanoparticles. However, most current methods of nanoparticle synthesis are optimized to produce metal nanoparticles only within a narrow size range. We find that core-shell nanoparticles formed by the seeded growth method may be used to artificially enlarge the size of the metal particles to reduce the nonspecific binding of oligonucleotides. We demonstrate herein a core-shell assisted growth method to assemble Pt and Ru nanoparticles by DNA hybridization. This method involves firstly synthesizing approximately 16 nm core-shell Ag-Pt and 21 nm core-shell Au-Ru nanoparticles from 9.6 nm Ag seeds and 17.2 nm Au seeds respectively by the seed-mediated growth method. The core-shell nanoparticles were then functionalized by complementary thiolated oligonucleotides followed by aging in 0.2 M PBS buffer for 6 hours. The DNA hybridization induced bimetallic assembly of Pt and Ru nanoparticles could then be carried out in 0.3 M PBS buffer for 10 hours.

Synthesis, testing and characterisation of bimetallic gold, Au-M on ceria as catalysts were carried out for low temperature water-gas shift reaction (WGS). Amongst the entire screened catalysts 3 wt% (AU-Pt)/CeO2 displayed the best WGS activity than the monometallic promotors, giving the light-off curve at the lowest temperature in the range 100-300 degrees C. (Au-Pd)/CeO2 also achieved the same activity but at a higher temperature. It was also found that WGS activity was strongly correlated with the surface reducibility which in turn depended on the modified local electronic band structure of promoted ceria. These results clearly suggest that the key role of bimetallic promoter may involve in facilitating the creation of defective reduced surface by exerting its local electronic effect on ceria to form the surface germinal -OH groups in water which act as active sites for enhanced WGS activity. Bimetallic Pd-Ru nanoparticles of different elemental ratios are prepared via in situ reduction of their simple salts in reverse micelles in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO(2)). The optimised Pd:Ru (1: 1) nanoparticle shows the highest activity for hydrogenation of functionalised alkene under mild conditions, which can be easily recycled under the reaction conditions without use of organic solvent. The mutual influence of surface geometry (e.g. lattice parameters, morphology) and electronic structure is discussed for Cu-Ni bimetallic (111) surfaces. It is found that on flat surfaces the electronic d-states of the adlayer experience very little influence from the substrate electronic structure which is due to their large separation in binding energies and the close match of Cu and Ni lattice constants. Using carbon monoxide and benzene as probe molecules, it is found that in most cases the reactivity of Cu or Ni adlayers is very similar to the corresponding (111) single crystal surfaces. Exceptions are the adsorption of CO on submonolayers of Cu on Ni(111) and the dissociation of benzene on Ni/Cu(111) which is very different from Ni(111). These differences are related to geometric factors influencing the adsorption on these surfaces.

This topical review discusses the influence of the surface geometry (e.g. lattice parameters and termination) and electronic structure of well-defined bimetallic surfaces on the adsorption and dissociation of benzene. The available data can be divided into two categories with combinations of non-transition metals and transition metals on the one side and combinations of two transition metals on the other. The main effect of non-transition metals in surface alloys is site blocking which can suppress chemisorption and dissociation of the molecules completely. When two transition metals are combined, the effects are less dramatic. They mainly affect the strength of the chemisorption bond and the degree of dissociation due to electronic and template effects.
