A novel technique for automated topographical analysis in the SEM has been investigated. It utilizes a 16-bit minicomputer arranged to act as an automatic focusing unit. The computer is coupled to the objective lens of the microscope, by means of a digital to analogue converter, and may regulate the excitation of the lens under program control. Further digital-to-analogue converters allow the computer to act as a programmable scan generator by applying ramp waveforms to the scan amplifiers, permitting the beam to be swept over a small sub-region of the field of interest. The video signal is sampled and applied to an analogue-to-digital converter; the resultant binary numbers are stored in computer memory as an array of values representing relative image intensities within a subregion. A differencing algorithm applied to the collected data allows the level of objective lens excitation to be found at which the sharpness of the image is optimized, and the excitation may be related to the working distance for that subregion through a previous calibration experiment. The sensitivity of the method for detecting small height changes is theoretically of the order of 1 μm.

An automatic step adjustment (ASA) method for average power analysis (APA) technique used in fiber amplifiers is proposed in this paper for the first time. In comparison with the traditional APA technique, the proposed method has suggested two unique merits such as a higher order accuracy and an ASA mechanism, so that it can significantly shorten the computing time and improve the solution accuracy. A test example demonstrates that, by comparing to the APA technique, the proposed method increases the computing speed by more than a hundredfold under the same errors. By computing the model equations of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, the numerical results show that our method can improve the solution accuracy by over two orders of magnitude at the same amplifying section number. The proposed method has the capacity to rapidly and effectively compute the model equations of fiber Raman amplifiers and semiconductor lasers. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America

A data manipulation method has been developed for automatic peak recognition and result evaluation in the analysis of organic chlorinated hydrocarbons with dual-column gas chromatography. Based on the retention times of two internal standards, pentachlorotoluene and decachlorobiphenyl, the retention times of chlorinated hydrocarbons can be calibrated automatically and accurately. It is very convenient to identify the peaks by comparing the retention times of samples with the calibrated retention times calculated from the relative retention indices of standards. Meanwhile, with a suggested two-step evaluation method the evaluation coefficients and the suitable quantitative results of each component can be automatically achieved for practical samples in an analytical system using two columns with different polarities and two internal standards. The Bifurcation Interpreter is a computer program that autonomously explores the steady-state orbits of one-parameter families of periodically- driven oscillators. To report its findings, the Interpreter generates schematic diagrams and English text descriptions similar to those appearing in the science and engineering research literature. Given a system of equations as input, the Interpreter uses symbolic algebra to automatically generate numerical procedures that simulate the system. The Interpreter incorporates knowledge about dynamical systems theory, which it uses to guide the simulations, to interpret the results, and to minimize the effects of numerical error.

This report presents a method for viewing complex programs as built up out of simpler ones. The central idea is that typical programs are built up in a small number of stereotyped ways. The method is designed to make it easier for an automatic system to work with programs. It focuses on how the primitive operations performed by a program are combined together in order to produce the actions of the program as a whole. It does not address the issue of how complex data structures are built up from simpler ones, nor the relationships between data structures and the operations performed on them.

A study on Extremenian music and audiovisual production has been carried out through YouTube media. The purpose of this study is to analyze all audiovisual products and also assessing what broadcasting processes are conducted by creators to publicize their musical and audiovisual works. A quantitative and qualitative study of audiovisual materials of Extremadura bands was done to find out which processes are most suitable to increase the number of viewers for videos.

In this paper we propose a novel automated glaucoma detection framework for mass-screening that operates on inexpensive retinal cameras. The proposed methodology is based on the assumption that discriminative features for glaucoma diagnosis can be extracted from the optical nerve head structures,
such as the cup-to-disc ratio or the neuro-retinal rim variation. After automatically segmenting the cup and optical disc, these features are feed into a machine learning classifier. Experiments were performed using two different datasets and from the obtained results the proposed technique provides
better performance than approaches based on appearance. A main advantage of our approach is that it only requires a few training samples to provide high accuracy over several different glaucoma stages.
