This study of the Behavior Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), had two objectives. First, was to compare the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) and the BASC-2. Participants were students from SBISD, identified as having difficulties, assessed with the BASC-2 and completed the SDQ. Based on the small sample (N=8), scores from the SDQ and the BASC-2 were found to correlate highly with one another on most conceptually similar scales. With both Parent and Teacher raters, diagnostic concordance was high for nearly all behavior and emotional problem scales. While the diagnostic concordance of the SDQ and BASC-2 looks promising, results need to be replicated with a larger sample. ^ The second objective was to assess the BASC-2 inter-informant concordance (parent, teacher and child). Participants were 145 students, 3-17 years, 78.6% male, 28% Hispanic, 37% White, 34% Black, and 64% were economically disadvantaged. Of the four dyads, teacher-teacher pairs had the highest correlations and agreement levels, especially on externalizing scale items, regardless of the subjects' age group, gender or ethnicity. ^ Overall, parent-teacher pairs had low to moderate concordance for most scale items, with slightly higher agreement for externalizing problems, with better concordance for preschool children, very low correlations with girls' ratings, but moderate correlations with boy ratings. Correlational results were generally moderate for teachers and parents of White children and low for teachers and parents of Hispanic and Black children. ^ Parent-child self-reports had low concordance for nearly all scale items evaluated, particularly with girl self-raters, but moderate with the boys. Conversely, Teacher-Girl pairs had larger correlations than with Boy. Parents reported substantially higher frequency of disorder endorsement than reported by the children, regardless of the child's ethnicity or gender. While generally low, Teachers and Black students had higher concordance on internalizing measures than Hispanic or White students. Parents of Black students had higher frequency of disorder endorsements than other ethnicities. ^ The difference in format and lack of externalizing measures on the self-report version (SRP) hinders inter-rater comparisons. Future studies using the revised, BASC-2 with children in a school-based setting are needed to assess further its rater reliability. ^

Acute diarrhea is the most common medical problem in the developing countries. Infectious agents are responsible for a majority of cases of acute diarrhea. Knowing the cause of acute diarrhea is important to developing plans for disease prevention, control and therapy. Acute diarrhea is caused by many viruses, bacteria and parasites. ^ Travelers to developing countries of the world commonly develop diarrhea as a result of eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated water. About 30-50% of travelers who travel from industrialized countries like United States to the developing countries are at risk of developing diarrhea. High risk areas for travelers' diarrhea are Mexico, Latin America and Southeast Asia. Public restaurants are the common sites for exposure to this type of food-borne infectious disease in travelers. Food becomes contaminated when they are handled by people with fecal content on their hands. ^ The importance of Diffusely Adherent Escherichia Coli (DAEC) in travelers to these areas has not been well studied. Some of the studies looking at DAEC have shown the organism to be present in children without symptoms. Other studies have shown a relationship between DAEC infection and presence of symptoms. I have selected this topic because the patho-physiological processes in DAEC infection that allow intestinal and extra-intestinal infections to develop are not fully understood. DAEC related acute diarrhea is a relatively new topic of public health significance. There is a limited number of studies regarding the virulence and pathogenic mechanisms of DAEC. The presumed virulence factor of the organism is diffuse attachment to the intestinal lining of the infected host. However more research needs to be done to identify the pathogenic mechanisms and virulence factors associated with DAEC infection for better treatment planning and diarrhea prevention. ^

In this paper a combined algorithm for analyzing structural controllability and observability of complex networks is presented. The algorithm addresses the two fundamental properties to guarantee structural controllability of a system: the absence of dilations and the accessibility of all nodes. The first problem is reformulated as a Maximum Matching search and it is addressed via the Hopcroft- Karp algorithm; the second problem is solved via a new wiring algorithm. Both algorithms can be combined to efficiently determine the number of required controllers and observers as well as the new required connections in order to guarantee controllability and observability in real complex networks. An application to a Twitter social network with over 100,000 nodes illustrates the proposed algorithms.

Spatial arch bridges represent an innovative answer to demands on functionality, structural optimization and aesthetics for curved decks, popular in urban contexts. This thesis presents SOFIA (Shaping Optimal Form with an Interactive Approach), a methodology for conceptual designing of antifunicular spatial arch bridges with curved deck in a parametric, interactive and integrated environment. The approach and its implementation are in-depth described and detailed examples of parametric analyses are illustrated. The optimal deck-arch relative transversal position has been investigated for obtaining the most cost-effective bridge. Curved footbridges have become a more common engineering problem in the context of urban developments when the client is looking for a strong aesthetics component: an appropriate conceptual design allows to obtain an efficient and elegant structure.

All eukaryotes that have been studied to date possess the ability to detect and degrade transcripts that contain a premature signal for the termination of translation. This process of nonsense-mediated RNA decay has been most comprehensively studied in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae where at least three trans-acting factors (Upf1p through Upf3P) are required. We have cloned cDNAs encoding human and murine homologues of Upf1p, termed rent1 (regulator of nonsense transcripts). Rent1 is the first identified mammalian protein that contains all of the putative functional elements in Upf1p including zinc finger-like and NTPase domains, as well as all motifs common to members of helicase superfamily I. Moreover, expression of a chimeric protein, N and C termini of Upf1p, complements the Upf1p-deficient phenotype in yeast. Thus, despite apparent differences between yeast and mammalian nonsense-mediated RNA decay, these data suggest that the two pathways use functionally related machinery.

In all political systems there is a gap between the rhetoric of electoral programmes and the practical work of institutions, argues author Riccardo Perissich, but the ‘vision thing’ is often a necessary prerequisite to reaching difficult decisions. When it comes to European institutions, which include the member states acting collectively, the desirable vision – the goal of European unity – has always been there and is still very much alive. Also, the existence of a broadly defined political goal has often facilitated agreements that were in fact purely necessary. However, because we lack a pan-European constituency to debate it, the narrative about this goal has been translated into different languages and is all but common. In fact, we have never seriously tried to unify it. Indeed, Europeans stopped debating what is desirable a long time ago: they simply react to events.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis is a common clinical problem encountered in patients with defects in innate or cell-mediated immunity. We have previously shown that recovery from chronic oropharyngeal candidiasis is dependent on CD4+ T-cell augmentation of neutrophil and macrophage candidacidal activity, and that the immune response is characterised by the production of cytokines such as IL-12 and IFN-gamma by cells in the local draining lymph nodes, and by the expression of TNF-alpha in the oral tissues. Objective: The purpose of this study was to elaborate on the role of these cytokines in recovery from oropharyngeal candidiasis, by using cytokine-specific gene-knockout mice. Methods: These mice are created by targeted gene mutation (tm1) of embryonic stem (ES) cells microinjected into host embryos. IL-4, IL-10, IL-12, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha knockout mice, and appropriate controls, were infected orally with 108 viable C. albicans yeasts. The infection was quantified by swabbing the oral cavity and plating on Sabouraud's agar. Results: Tnftm1mice developed an acute severe infection characterized by an increased fungal load in the early stages of infection, but cleared the yeast within the same time frame as control mice (21 days). On the other hand, Il12btm1 mice developed a chronic oropharyngeal infection (120 days) similar to that seen in T-cell deficient (Foxn1nu/Foxn1nu) mutant mice. There was no significant difference between Il4tm1, Il10tm1, and Ifngtm1 mice and their respective controls. Conclusions: Tnftm1 mice may be rendered more susceptible through impaired recruitment of phagocytic cells, and/or impaired killing of C. albicans, whereas Il12btm1 mice may not be capable of activating naïve T-cells or inducing an appropriate cellular immune response. This work reports the developnent of a mathenatical model and distributed, multi variable computer-control for a pilot plant double-effect climbing-film evaporator. A distributed-parameter model of the plant has been developed and the time-domain model transformed into the Laplace domain. The model has been further transformed into an integral domain conforming to an algebraic ring of polynomials, to eliminate the transcendental terms which arise in the Laplace domain due to the distributed nature of the plant model. This has made possible the application of linear control theories to a set of linear-partial differential equations. The models obtained have well tracked the experimental results of the plant. A distributed-computer network has been interfaced with the plant to implement digital controllers in a hierarchical structure. A modern rnultivariable Wiener-Hopf controller has been applled to the plant model. The application has revealed a limitation condition that the plant matrix should be positive-definite along the infinite frequency axis. A new multi variable control theory has emerged fram this study, which avoids the above limitation. The controller has the structure of the modern Wiener-Hopf controller, but with a unique feature enabling a designer to specify the closed-loop poles in advance and to shape the sensitivity matrix as required. In this way, the method treats directly the interaction problems found in the chemical processes with good tracking and regulation performances. Though the ability of the analytical design methods to determine once and for all whether a given set of specifications can be met is one of its chief advantages over the conventional trial-and-error design procedures. However, one disadvantage that offsets to some degree the enormous advantages is the relatively complicated algebra that must be employed in working out all but the simplest problem. Mathematical algorithms and computer software have been developed to treat some of the mathematical operations defined over the integral domain, such as matrix fraction description, spectral factorization, the Bezout identity, and the general manipulation of polynomial matrices. Hence, the design problems of Wiener-Hopf type of controllers and other similar algebraic design methods can be easily solved.

In this paper, we study the localization problem in large-scale Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs). Unlike in the terrestrial positioning, the global positioning system (GPS) can not work efficiently underwater. The limited bandwidth, the severely impaired channel and the cost of underwater equipment all makes the localization problem very challenging. Most current localization schemes are not well suitable for deep underwater environment. We propose a hierarchical localization scheme to address the challenging problems. The new scheme mainly consists of four types of nodes, which are surface buoys, Detachable Elevator Transceivers (DETs), anchor nodes and ordinary nodes. Surface buoy is assumed to be equipped with GPS on the water surface. A DET is attached to a surface buoy and can rise and down to broadcast its position. The anchor nodes can compute their positions based on the position information from the DETs and the measurements of distance to the DETs. The hierarchical localization scheme is scalable, and can be used to make balances on the cost and localization accuracy. Initial simulation results show the advantages of our proposed scheme. © 2009 IEEE.

We consider the problems of finding two optimal triangulations of a convex polygon: MaxMin area and MinMax area. These are the triangulations that maximize the area of the smallest area triangle in a triangulation, and respectively minimize the area of the largest area triangle in a triangulation, over all possible triangulations. The problem was originally solved by Klincsek by dynamic programming in cubic time [2]. Later, Keil and Vassilev devised an algorithm that runs in O(n^2 log n) time [1]. In this paper we describe new geometric findings on the structure of MaxMin and MinMax Area triangulations of convex polygons in two dimensions and their algorithmic implications. We improve the algorithm’s running time to quadratic for large classes of convex polygons. We also present experimental results on MaxMin area triangulation.

A tőkeallokáció vizsgálatára axiomatikus megközelítést alkalmazunk, tehát alapvető tulajdonságok megkövetelésével dolgozunk. / === / Risk capital allocation in finance is important theoretically and also in practical applications. How can the risk of a portfolio be shared among its sub-portfolios? How should the capital reserves be set to cover risks, and how should the reserves be assigned to the business units? The study uses an axiomatic approach to analyse risk capital allocation, by working with requiring basic properties. The starting point is a 2010 study by Csoka and Pinter (2010), who showed that the axioms of coherent measures of risk are not compatible with some fairness, incentive compatibility and stability requirements of risk allocation. This paper discusses these requirements using analytical and simulation tools. It analyses methods used in practical applications that have theoretically interesting properties. The main conclusion is that the problems identified in Csoka and Pinter (2010) remain relevant in practical applications, so that it is not just a theoretical issue, it is a common practical problem. A further contribution is made because analysis of risk allocation methods helps practitioners choose among the different methods available.

Several are the areas in which digital images are used in solving day-to-day problems. In medicine the use of computer systems have improved the diagnosis and medical interpretations. In dentistry it’s not different, increasingly procedures assisted by computers have support dentists in their tasks. Set in this context, an area of dentistry known as public oral health is responsible for diagnosis and oral health treatment of a population. To this end, oral visual inspections are held in order to obtain oral health status information of a given population. From this collection of information, also known as epidemiological survey, the dentist can plan and evaluate taken actions for the different problems identified. This procedure has limiting factors, such as a limited number of qualified professionals to perform these tasks, different diagnoses interpretations among other factors. Given this context came the ideia of using intelligent systems techniques in supporting carrying out these tasks. Thus, it was proposed in this paper the development of an intelligent system able to segment, count and classify teeth from occlusal intraoral digital photographic images. The proposed system makes combined use of machine learning techniques and digital image processing. We first carried out a color-based segmentation on regions of interest, teeth and non teeth, in the images through the use of Support Vector Machine. After identifying these regions were used techniques based on morphological operators such as erosion and transformed watershed for counting and detecting the boundaries of the teeth, respectively. With the border detection of teeth was possible to calculate the Fourier descriptors for their shape and the position descriptors. Then the teeth were classified according to their types through the use of the SVM from the method one-against-all used in multiclass problem. The multiclass classification problem has been approached in two different ways. In the first approach we have considered three class types: molar, premolar and non teeth, while the second approach were considered five class types: molar, premolar, canine, incisor and non teeth. The system presented a satisfactory performance in the segmenting, counting and classification of teeth present in the images.
