The improved workability effect of latex in dry mortars has not been fully clarified. The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of the EVA copolymer on the cement hydration and on the rheological properties of cement pastes. The results pointed to a minor influence of EVA on cement hydration and to a ball-bearing effect. In fact, the shear thinning behavior of reference paste at 15 min after mixing changed to shear thickening owing to the EVA addition. This behavior could be explained by the decrease in the interparticle separation distance as consequence of the solid content increase in case of shearing detachment of weakly adhered EVA particles from the cement particles surfaces. The expected EVA plasticizing effect was observed at 60 min. Such behavior points to the stabilization of EVA on the cement particles surfaces, thus resulting in a steric barrier effect.

The objective of this research is to develop sustainable wood-blend bioasphalt and characterize the atomic, molecular and bulk-scale behavior necessary to produce advanced asphalt paving mixtures. Bioasphalt was manufactured from Aspen, Basswood, Red Maple, Balsam, Maple, Pine, Beech and Magnolia wood via a 25 KWt fast-pyrolysis plant at 500 °C and refined into two distinct end forms - non-treated (5.54% moisture) and treated bioasphalt (1% moisture). Michigan petroleum-based asphalt, Performance Grade (PG) 58-28 was modified with 2, 5 and 10% of the bioasphalt by weight of base asphalt and characterized with the gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS), Fourier Transform Infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy and the automated flocculation titrimetry techniques. The GC-MS method was used to characterize the Carbon-Hydrogen-Nitrogen (CHN) elemental ratio whiles the FTIR and the AFT were used to characterize the oxidative aging performance and the solubility parameters, respectively. For rheological characterization, the rotational viscosity, dynamic shear modulus and flexural bending methods are used in evaluating the low, intermediate and high temperature performance of the bio-modified asphalt materials. 54 5E3 (maximum of 3 million expected equivalent standard axle traffic loads) asphalt paving mixes were then prepared and characterized to investigate their laboratory permanent deformation, dynamic mix stiffness, moisture susceptibility, workability and constructability performance. From the research investigations, it was concluded that: 1) levo, 2, 6 dimethoxyphenol, 2 methoxy 4 vinylphenol, 2 methyl 1-2 cyclopentandione and 4-allyl-2, 6 dimetoxyphenol are the dominant chemical functional groups; 2) bioasphalt increases the viscosity and dynamic shear modulus of traditional asphalt binders; 3) Bio-modified petroleum asphalt can provide low-temperature cracking resistance benefits at -18 °C but is susceptible to cracking at -24 °C; 3) Carbonyl and sulphoxide oxidation in petroleum-based asphalt increases with increasing bioasphalt modifiers; 4) bioasphalt causes the asphaltene fractions in petroleum-based asphalt to precipitate out of the solvent maltene fractions; 5) there is no definite improvement or decline in the dynamic mix behavior of bio-modified mixes at low temperatures; 6) bio-modified asphalt mixes exhibit better rutting performance than traditional asphalt mixes; 7) bio-modified asphalt mixes have lower susceptibility to moisture damage; 8) more field compaction energy is needed to compact bio-modified mixes.

SUMMARY In common practice, continuous sand gradings are recommended to produce ordinary mortars. This requirement, along with grading limits are based on classical theories, such as Fuller, aimed at achieving a reasonable packing density without compromising workability at the fresh state. Nevertheless, there are other alternatives, such as discontinuous curves based on particle interference criteria, which are capable of having even higher packing density. The less the content of voids in the granular skeleton, the less the amount of cement paste required to fill in these voids and coating the particles. Yet, the minimum volume of paste in a mortar is determined by requirements associated to the fresh state and thus, fluidity and viscosity of the paste play a significant role on the matter. These two properties can be modified by the use of suitable fillers and by the use of last-generation chemical admixtures. As a result, it is proposed to analyse the possibility of combining current particle interference criteria with the use of different types of filler and chemical admixtures to optimise cement-based mortar formulations. This optimisation is aimed at reducing the paste content while maintaining a suitable performance at the fresh state. The reduction in paste content would lead to a better dimensional stability, with better control of shrinkage and cracking behaviour. The foreseen optimisation process will have a strong rational basis and thus, it should be potentially useful to optimise mortar proportions according to a performance-based approach.

The use of fly ash (FA) as an admixture to concrete is broadly extended for two main reasons: the reduction of costs that supposes the substitution of cement and the micro structural changes motivated by the mineral admixture. Regarding this second point, there is a consensus that considers that the ash generates a more compact concrete and a reduction in the size of the pore. However, the measure in which this contributes to the pozzolanic activity or as filler is not well defined. There is also no justification to the influence of the physical parameters, fineness of the grain and free water, in its behavior. This work studies the use of FA as a partial substitute of the cement in concretes of different workability (dry and wet) and the influence in the reactivity of the ash. The concrete of dry consistency which serves as reference uses a cement dose of 250 Kg/m 3 and the concrete of fluid consistency utilized a dose of cement of 350 Kg/m 3 . Two trademark of Portland Cement Type 1 were used. The first reached the resistant class for its fineness of grain and the second one for its composition. Moreover, three doses of FA have been used, and the water/binder ratio was constant in all the mixtures. We have studied the mechanical properties and the micro-structure of the concretes by means of compressive strength tests, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) and thermal analysis (TA). The results of compressive strength tests allow us to observe that concrete mixtures with cements of the same classification and similar dosage of binder do not present the same mechanical behavior. These results show that the effective water/binder ratio has a major role in the development of the mechanical properties of concrete. The study of different dosages using TA, thermo-gravimetry and differential thermal analysis, revealed that the portlandite content is not restrictive in any of the dosages studied. Again, this proves that the rheology of the material influences the reaction rate and content of hydrated cement products. We conclude that the available free water is determinant in the efficiency of pozzolanic reaction. It is so that in accordance to the availability of free water, the ashes can react as an active admixture or simply change the porous distribution. The MIP shows concretes that do not exhibit significant changes in their mechanical behavior, but have suffered significant variation in their porous structure

The following research is focused on establishing the differences in the re-use as aggregate in dry consistency concretes of two types of rubber obtained in the process of tyre recycling, recycled rubber from tyres (RRT): granulated sizes (4–8 mm) of high quality recycled rubber (CR: Clean Rubber) and the waste of the recycling process: steel and textile fibers with rubber tracks (waste from recycled rubber, WRR). Both types were classified and added as aggregate in substitution of coarse aggregates from 20 to 100 % by volume. The physical and mechanical behavior of IR in concretes was compared with reference concrete and series with CR for a future use in precast concrete pieces. In both samples a reduction of mechanical resistance occurs in proportion with the amounts of rubber of substitution, but less in serials with IR with a successful combination of steel and textile fiber. IR shows furthermore a reduction in properties such as workability and density, but also an increment in porosity. These facts facilitate new options for waste from CRN in concretes and therefore lower energy costs, achieving a success rate in the recycling process close to 100 %.

In recent years, the extended use of repair materials for buildings and structures made the development of repair mortars more and more technical. In the development of these mortars by producers, the use of polymers in the formulations is a key point, because sometimes this use is not justified when looking to the performance/price/application as a whole. This thesis is an exhaustive study to justify the use of these mortars as a response to the current growing demand for structural repair. The thesis is classified in three parts:The first part is the study of the state of the art of mortars and their constituents. In ancient times, widely used mortars were based on lime and gypsum. The Greeks and Romans developed the concept of lime mortars, introducing components such as pozzolans, hydraulic limes and marble dust as aggregates, giving very similar concrete mortars to the ones used currently. In the middle Age and Renaissance, the technology developed by the Romans was lost, due to the extensive use of stone in the civil, religious and defensive constructions. It was not until the 19th century, when J. Aspdin discovered the current cement as the main hydraulic compound. Finally in the 20th century, with the appearance of molecules such as styrene, melanin, vinyl chloride and polyester, the industry began to develop polymers which were added to the binder to form special "composites".The use of polymers in cementitious matrixes give properties to the mortar such as adhesion, Currently, the result of the polymer synthesis (polivynilacetate, styrene-butadiene, vynilacrylic and epoxy resins) is that mortars have increased resistance to water attack and therefore, they increase their durability since all reactions of deterioration are minimised (ice, humidity, biological attack,...). In the present study the polymer used was redispersible polymer powder. These polymers are encapsulated and when in contact with water, they are released from the capsule forming a gel.In the repair mortars, the only hydraulic compound is the cement and nowadays, this is the main constituent of building materials. The current trend is centered in the use of higher contents of additions (lime, pozzolana, fly ash, silica, silica fume...) in order to obtain more sustainable cements. Once the composition of mortars is analyzed, the technological improvement is centred in increasing the durability of the working life. Durability is defined as the ability to resist the action of the environment, chemical, physical, and biological attacks or any process that tends to its destruction. These processes depend on factors such as the concrete porosity and the environmental exposure. In terms of porosity, it be considered, the distribution of Macropores and mesopores and pores of the concrete structure, since not all of them are capable of causing the transportation of damaging agents, causing internal stresses on the same walls and destroying the cementing matrix. In general, deterioration processes are related to the action of water, either as direct agent or as a transport vehicle. Concrete durability also depends on the type of cement and its chemical composition (cement with high addition amounts are more resistant), water/cement ratio and cement content. The standard UNE-EN 1504 consists of 10 parts and defines the products for the protection and repair of concrete, the quality control of products, physical-chemical properties and durability. Other 65 standards that provide the test methods for the evaluation of repair systems are referenced in this standard. In the second part of this thesis there is a design of experiments with different polymer mortars (with concentrations of polymer between 0 and 25%), taking a control mortar without polymer as a reference and its physico-chemical, mechanical and durable properties were studied. For mortars with low proportion of polymer, 1 component systems are used (powder polymer) and for high polymer concentrations, water dispersion polymers are used. The mechanical properties measured were: compressive strength, flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, adhesion by direct traction and expansion-shrinkage, all of them under standards UNE. As a characterization of the durability, following tests are carried out: capillary absorption, resistance to carbonation and pull out adhesion after freeze-thaw cycles. The target of this study is to select the best mortar to make a comparison between mortars with polymer (optimized amount) and mortars without polymer. To select the optimum amount of polymer the following criteria have been considered: the mortar must have a classification R4 in terms of mechanical performance as well as in durability properties against the performed cycles, always bearing in mind that the addition of polymer cannot be too high to make the mortar competitive in price. The following general conclusions were obtained from this study: - A standard mortar does not fulfill the properties to be classified as R3 or R4 - Without polymer, a mortar may fulfill R4 for most of the measured characteristics. - It is necessary to use relations w/c ratio < 0.5 to get R4 mortars - The addition of polymer always improves adhesion, abrasion, capillary absorption and carbonation resistance - The different proportions of polymer used always improve the mechanical properties and durability. - The polymer has no influence on the expansion and shrinkage of the mortar - Adhesion is improved significantly with the use of polymer. - The presence of polymer in mortars improves the properties related to the action of the water, by the increase of the cement power and therefore the cohesion. The cementitious properties decrease the porosity. As final result of this study, it was determined that the optimum amount of polymer for the second part of the study is 2.0 - 3.5%. The third part is the comparative study between two mortars: one without polymer (A mortar) and another with the optimized amount of polymer, completed in the previous part (mortar B). Once the percentage of polymer is defined, a new granular skeleton is defined, with a new dosing of aggregate sizes, for both the reference mortar, the mortar with polymers, and the tests for physical, microstructural characterization and durability, are performed, as well as trials of part 1, measurements of the microstructural properties that were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mercury porosimetry techniques; as well as properties of the mortar in fresh State (consistency, content of entrained air and final setting time). The use of polymer versus non polymer mortar, provided the following advantages: - In fresh state: mortar with polymer presented higher consistency and least amount of entrained air, which makes a mortar more workable and more ductile as well as more resistant because hardening will leave fewer gaps in its internal structure and increase its durability. Also allow it allows a better workability because of the longer (not excessive) setting time. - Regarding the mechanical properties: improvement in adhesion. It is one of the main properties which give the polymer to mortars. This higher adhesion results in an improvement of adhesion to the substrate, minimization of possible reactions at the concrete-mortar interface and therefore an increase in the durability of the repair carried out with mortar and concrete. - Respect to microstructural properties: the porosity of mortar with polymer is less and with smaller pore size, critical to be attacked by external agents causing deterioration. No major differences were observed from the data obtained by SEM - In terms of abrasion and capillary absorption, polymer mortar presented better performance as a result of its lower porosity and its microscopic structure. - Finally behavior against attack by sulfates and seawater, as well as to carbonation, was better in the mortar with polymer because of its lower permeability and its lower porosity. To complete the study, due to the great importance of sustainability for future market facts, the life cycle of the two mortars studied was analysed.

ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the results of a research on inerting fly ash from urban solid waste and its subsequent encapsulation in mortar matrixes. The inerting of this hazardous toxic waste, as well as its valorization as a by-product has been achieved. In this way, a new "raw material" is available through a simple process and the toxic and hazardous waste is eliminated, and consequently, conservation of alternative natural resources is strengthened. Chemical analysis of the ashes analyzed shows high concentrations of soluble chlorides, Zn and Pb. An inerting process of fly ash with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been developed which reduces 99% the content of chlorides and maintains pH at optimal values, so that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate is minimum, due to its stabilization in the form of insoluble carbonates. Mortars with four different types of cements (CEM-I, CEM-II, CAC and CSA) have been developed by the addition of inertized fly ash in the form of carbonates, in the proportion of 10% in weight of the aggregates used. The samples tested include different proportions in the use of aggregates with different sizes (0/2 and 0/4), and in the cement/aggregate ratio (1/1 and 1/3). Physical/mechanical properties of these mortars have been studied through workability, dimensional stability, carbonation, porosity and mechanic strength tests. Leaching tests of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd ions are also being performed on monolithic samples of the best behavioral mortars. The content in leachated heavy metal ions is being analyzed through stripping voltammetry determination. Conclusions drawn are that the tested CAC and CSA cement mortars present much better behavior than those of CEM-I and CEM-II cement. The results are especially remarkable for the CAC cement mortars, improving reference mortars compression strengths in more than 48%, and also bending strengths in more than 67%. Leaching tests confirm that the encapsulation of Zn and Pb is achieved and leachate of both ions is mitigated within the mortar matrixes. For the above stated reasons, it might be concluded that mortars made with calcium aluminate cements or calcium sulfoaluminate with the incorporation of treated fly ash, may be perfectly valid for uses in which a fast-curing product, with high initial strength and drying shrinkage compensation with a high dimensional stability is required. Based on this, the material could be used as repair mortar for structures, roads and industrial pavements requiring high performance, such as: industrial floorings, landing tracks, parking lots, etc. Alternatively, it could also be used in the manufacture of prefabricated elements without structural reinforcement, given its high bending strength.

The superplastic deformation behavior and superplastic forming ability of the Zr41.25Ti13.75Ni10Cu12.5Be22.5 (at.%) bulk metallic glass (BMG) in the supercooled liquid region were investigated. The isothermal tensile results indicate (hat the BMG exhibits a Newtonian behavior at low strain rates but a non-Newtonian behavior at hiqh-strain rates in the initial deformation stage. The maximum elongation reaches as high as 1624% at 656 K. and nanocrystallization was found to occur during the deformation process. Based cm the analysis on tensile deformation. a gear-like micropart is successfully die-forged via a superplastic forgings process. demonstrating that the BMG has excellent workability in the supercooled liquid region. Investigations concentrated on the styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) latex and formulations included standard carboxylated and special carboxylated latexes. The aqueous component, containing the stabilisers and antifoaming agent but not the polymer solids, was also used. For comparison, limited investigations were carried out using other polymer types e.g. acrylic, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), and redispersible powders rather than emulsions. The major findings were: 1) All latex systems investigated acted as retarders for cement hydration. The extent of retardation depends on the type of polymer. The mechanism for cement hydration may be changed, and excessive retardation influences properties. 2) Polymer modified cements exhibited either similar or coarser pore structures compared with unmodified cements. Results suggest that polymer mainly exists in a mixture of cement hydrates and polymer phase. Very little evidence was found for the formation of a distinct polymer film phase. 3) During the first few days of curing the polymer solids are removed from the pore solution and concentrations of OH-, Na+ and K+ are reduced. These observations are probably a result of polymer-cement surface interactions since there was no evidence of any chemical reactions or degradation of the polymer. 4) Improved diffusional resistance of modified cements depends on the ability to achieve adequate workability at low w/c ratio, rather than modification of matrix structure.

Polymer modified cements and mortars have become popular for use as patch repair materials. General evidence suggests that these materials offer considerable improvements compared to traditional mortars although the mechanisms for this are not fully understood. This work elucidates the factors which govern some properties and performance of different polymer systems. In view of the wide range of commercial systems available, investigations concentrated on the use of three of the most commonly available groups of polymers. These were: (1) Styrene Butadiene Rubber (SBR), (2) Acrylics and, (3) Ethylene Vinyl Acetates (EVA). The later two were in the form of both emulsions and redispersible powders. Experiments concentrated on: (1) Rheological behaviour of polymer modified cement pastes; (2) Workability of polymer modified mortars; (3) Influence of curing conditions on the pore size distribution and diffusion of chloride ions; (4) Bond strength of polymer modified cement and mortar patches; and (5) Microscopic examination and semi-quantitative analyses of the bulk and interfacial microstructures. The following main conclusions were reached: (1) The addition of polymer emulsions have a considerable influence on the workability of fresh cement pastes, the extent of this depending on the type of system used. (2) The rheological parameters of fresh polymer modified mortars can be established using a two-point workability test which may be used when comparing the properties of different systems at constant workability. (3) Curing conditions affect the properties of polymer modified systems and a wet/dry curing regime was essential for good adhesion of these materials to mortar substrates. (4) In contrast, the wet/dry curing regime resulted in a curing affected zone at the surface of patch materials. This can result in a much coarser pore structure and enhanced diffusion of e.g. chloride ions. (5) The microstructure of polymer modified systems was very different compared with the unmodified cement/mortar and varied depending on curing conditions.

The generation of industrial wastes has been increased more and more in recent decades, motivating studies about a correct sustainable allocation and that also represents advantages for their generators. In this context, are included two companies of cleaning products niche, located in São José do Mipibu/RN, that produces industrial sludge at a sewage treatment plant, and that is the main approach of this research. Given this, it was studied the incorporation potentiality of this sludge as a mineral addition in cement matrix for concrete production due it high capacity of wastes immobilization inside this material, which are subsequently used in the company for making precast articles. Were added different sludge concentrations (5, 10, 15 and 20%) in a common trait (1: 2: 3), and evaluated their techniques and microstructural implications via workability test in fresh state and compressive strength, full porosity and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the hardened state. The results demonstrated the feasibility of the process both from a technical and environmental view as economical. All concretes produced with residue showed an increase of workability given the nature of the waste that had surfactants substances capable of adsorbing tiny particles of air into the batter. However, for all concentrations were obtained lower compressive resistances than standard concrete, with a reduction of 39% for samples with 20% of sludge. This are attributed mainly to an increase of porosity in the transition zone of these material, resulting from increased formation of ettringite at the detriment to the formation of other compounds, but which still allows the use of these for the manufacture of concrete articles with non-structural nature, such as precast floor. In addition, the water absorption and void ratio increased slightly for all samples, except the concrete with 20% of waste that has a reduction for the last parameter. Given this context, the recommended maximum level is 20%, constituting a significant proportion and able to allocate sustainably all waste generated in the industry.

ABSTRACT

One of the binder systems with low environmental footprint is alkali activated slag concretes (AASC), made by adding alkalis such as sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate to industrial by-products such as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Whilst they have the similar behaviour as that of traditional cement systems in terms of strength and structural behaviour, AASC do exhibit superior performance in terms of abrasion and acid resistance and fire protection.
In this article, the authors focus their attention on chloride ingress into different grades of AASC. The mix variables in AASC included water-to-binder, binder to aggregate ratio, percentage of alkali and the SiO2/Na2O ratio (silica modulus, Ms). The first challenge is to get mixes for different range of workability (with slump values from 40mm to 240mm) and reasonable early age and long term compressive strength according to each one. Then the chloride diffusion and migration in those mixes were measured and compared with same normal concretes in the existed literature based on chloride penetration depth. Comparing the chloride ingress between tradition concretes and AASCs is worthwhile to prove the possibility of increasing concrete lifetime in proximity to sea and deciding while such concretes are practical for use. Findings show that compared to the PC concretes, the AAS concretes have lower rate of chloride ingress.

ABSTRACT: Researchers are focusing their attention on alternative binder systems using 100% supplementary cementitious materials as it allows better control over the microstructure formation and low to moderate environmental footprint. One such system being considered is alkali activated slag concretes (AASC), made by adding alkalis such as sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate to ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS). Whilst they have a similar behaviour as that of traditional cement systems in terms of strength and structural behaviour, AASC are reported to exhibit superior performance in terms of abrasion, acid resistance and fire protection.
In this article, the authors investigate chloride ingress into different grades of AASC. The mix variables in AASC included water to binder, and binder to aggregate ratio, percentage of alkali and the SiO2/Na2O ratio (silica modulus, Ms). The first challenge was to develop mixes for different range of workability (with slump values from 40mm to 240mm) and reasonable early age and long term compressive strength. Further chloride ingress into those mixes were assessed and compared with the data from normal concretes based on literature. Findings show that compared to the PC concretes, the AAS concretes have lower rate of chloride ingress.

The basic objective of this work is to evaluate the durability of self-compacting concrete (SCC) produced in binary and ternary mixes using fly ash (FA) and limestone filler (LF) as partial replacement of cement. The main characteristics that set SCC apart from conventional concrete (fundamentally its fresh state behaviour) essentially depend on the greater or lesser content of various constituents, namely: greater mortar volume (more ultrafine material in the form of cement and mineral additions); proper control of the maximum size of the coarse aggregate; use of admixtures such as superplasticizers. Significant amounts of mineral additions are thus incorporated to partially replace cement, in order to improve the workability of the concrete. These mineral additions necessarily affect the concrete's microstructure and its durability. Therefore, notwithstanding the many well-documented and acknowledged advantages of SCC, a better understanding its behaviour is still required, in particular when its composition includes significant amounts of mineral additions. An ambitious working plan was devised: first, the SCC's microstructure was studied and characterized and afterwards the main transport and degradation mechanisms of the SCC produced were studied and characterized by means of SEM image analysis, chloride migration, electrical resistivity, and carbonation tests. It was then possible to draw conclusions about the SCC's durability. The properties studied are strongly affected by the type and content of the additions. Also, the use of ternary mixes proved to be extremely favourable, confirming the expected beneficial effect of the synergy between LF and FA.
