This study focused on the risk factors in mother-child relationship that predispose babies to the development of dental caries. A prospective cohort study with 80 mother-child pairs was conducted. The mothers responded at 12, 18 and 30 months after their children's birth, to questions about variables related to diet, sucking habits, and oral care. Children were clinically examined to verify caries lesions (white spot lesions or cavitation). Data were analysed using Chi squared or Fisher's exact tests. The significance level was set at 5 %. Of the total, 3.75 % showed cavitated lesions after 18 months; 6.25 and 45 % had spot white lesions, respectively, at 18 and 30 months. The cariogenic diet was high at 12 (63.75 %) and 30 (88.75 %) months. Good oral hygiene was present in a minority of children at 12 months (46.25 %), but increased at 30 months (65 %), helping to prevent cavities and white spot lesions over this period (p = 0.0005). The variables of the blocks sucking habits and diet were not associated with caries. The lack of oral care in children was a risk factor for dental caries development.

The emerging disease White-Nose Syndrome in hibernating bat populations across the United States has increased the need to understand the physiological benefits and consequences of hibernation and the effects on immunological responsiveness. Hibernation has been well-documented in many mammalian species, yet few studies have examined hibernation immunology in bats, particularly with respect to normal immunological patterns. In order to characterize the levels of circulating leukocytes and plasma immunoglobulins in euthermic and hibernating female big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus), blood smear differential leukocyte counts and total immunoglobulin assays were performed for each group using blood samples from the active and hibernation seasons. Hibernation patterns – torpor and arousals from torpor – were determined by placing temperature-sensitive dataloggers on the backs of bats assigned to the hibernating group during the hibernation season. Data indicate that the ratio of circulating neutrophils to lymphocytes is lower in bats assigned to the euthermic group during the hibernation season than in bats assigned to the hibernation group during the hibernation period, but that relative immunoglobulin levels do not differ during the hibernation season, regardless of whether bats were active or hibernating. Neither bats assigned to the hibernation group nor bats assigned to the euthermic group demonstrate a significant change in the ratio of circulating neutrophils and lymphocytes between their active and hibernating seasons. Bats assigned to the hibernation group were also observed to arouse from torpor somewhat synchronously. These results suggest that innate and adaptive cell levels are maintained, at best, in hibernating bats that are not immunologically challenged and that bats that remain euthermic during the hibernation season are able to continually regulate their levels of neutrophils and lymphocytes and therefore their innate and adaptive immune system responses.

Mandibles of two cats containing carious lesions were discovered among the previously published findings of feline dental resorptive lesions from materials examined at an archaeological museum. These lesions were too small to be noted on radiographs, and consisted of two inconspicuous enamel lesions in a mandibular left first molar tooth (309), a clinically visible white spot area containing an enamel lesion in a mandibular left fourth premolar tooth (308), and a root surface caries in the 308 of a different specimen. Histologic examination using special stains and polarized light revealed both initial and early initial stage enamel caries, as well as root surface caries. Knoop hardness measurements confirmed these findings, considered the first documented cases of feline caries.

Disease is the result of interactions amongst pathogens, the environment and host organisms. To investigate the effect of stress on Penaeus monodon, juvenile shrimp were given short term exposure to hypoxic, hyperthermic and osmotic stress twice over a 1-week period and estimates of total haemocyte count (THC), heat shock protein (HSP) 70 expression and load of gill associated virus (GAV) were determined at different time points. While no significant differences were observed in survival and THC between stressed and control shrimp (P>0.05), HSP 70 expression and GAV load changed significantly (P

Foram colocadas as palavras-chave: “enamel remineralization”, “ICDAS”, “white spot lesion”, “non-cavitated caries lesions”, “resin infiltration”, “infiltrants”, “dental caries detection”, “remineralizing agents”, “demineralization-remineralization” e “dental toothpaste”.

Aim: This prospective cohort study was to evaluate the independent and mutual effects of socioeconomic, oral health behaviors and individual clinical factors, including enamel hypomineralization, as possible risk factors for increase in caries experience in second primary molar (SPM) over a period of 2-years. Methods: Children (n=216) aged 4-6 years were examined for hypomineralized second primary molar (HSPM) and dental caries in school settings and were recalled every 6 months. The caregivers filled out a semi-structured questionnaire about their socio-demographic and oral health-related behaviors. Data analysis was performed using a hierarchical model with three levels. Multiple analyses were performed at each level and variables with p<0.20 were tested by stepwise multiple Generalized Estimating Equation. Results: At final examination, 33.3% of the children had developed new caries lesions in SPM. The model showed that the number of years of mother’s schooling and the caregiver´s perception about their children’s caries experience played a protective role in the incidence of dental caries. Children who had white spot lesions were more likely to develop new carious lesions in SPM. Children with HSPM showed no higher incidence of caries in their SPM than those without HSPM. Conclusions: Clinical, socioeconomic and behavioral factors impacted on caries development in primary second molars. However, further studies are required to better understand the role of HSPM in caries development in other age groups.

Kallmann syndrome (KS), characterized by the association of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia, may present many other phenotypic abnormalities, including neurologic features as involuntary movements, called mirror movements (MM). MM etiology probably involves a complex mechanism comprising corticospinal tract abnormal development associated with deficient contralateral motor cortex inhibitory system. In this study, in order to address previous hypotheses concerning MM etiology, we identified and quantified white matter (WM) alterations in 21 KS patients, comparing subjects with and without MM and 16 control subjects, using magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) and T2 relaxometry (R2). Magnetization transfer and 12 double-echo images were acquired in a 1.5 T system. MTR and R2 were calculated pixel by pixel to initially create individual maps, and then, group average maps, co-registered with MNI305 stereotaxic coordinate system. After analysis of selected regions of interest, we demonstrated areas with higher 12 relaxation time and lower MTR values in KS patients, with and without MM, differently involving corticospinal tract projection, frontal lobes and corpus callosum. Higher MTR was observed only in pyramidal decussation when compared in both groups of patients with controls. In conclusion, we demonstrated that patients with KS have altered WM areas, presenting in a different manner in patients with and without MM. These data suggest axonal loss or disorganization involving abnormal pyramidal tracts and other associative/connective areas, relating to the presence or absence of MM. We also found a different pattern of alteration in pyramidal decussation, which can represent the primary area of neuronal disarrangement. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
