Sessile droplets on a vibrating substrate are investigated focusing on axisymmetric oscillations with pinned contact line. Proper orthogonal decomposition is employed to identify the different modes of droplet shape oscillation and quantitatively assess the droplet oscillation and spectral response. We offer the first experimental evidence for the analogy of an oscillating sessile droplet with a non-linear spring mass damper system. The qualitative and quantitative agreement of amplitude response and phase response curves and limit cycles of the model dynamical system with that observed experimentally suggest that the bulk oscillations in the fundamental mode of a sessile droplet can be very well modeled by a Duffing oscillator with a hard spring, especially near the resonance. The red shift of the resonance peak with an increase in the glycerol concentration is clearly evidenced by both the experimental and predicted amplitude response curves. The influence of various operational parameters such as excitation frequency and amplitude and fluid properties on the droplet oscillation characteristics is adequately captured by the model. Structural-acoustic waveguides of two different geometries are considered: a 2-D rectangular and a circular cylindrical geometry. The objective is to obtain asymptotic expansions of the fluid-structure coupled wavenumbers. The required asymptotic parameters are derived in a systematic way, in contrast to the usual intuitive methods used in such problems. The systematic way involves analyzing the phase change of a wave incident on a single boundary of the waveguide. Then, the coupled wavenumber expansions are derived using these asymptotic parameters. The phase change is also used to qualitatively demarcate the dispersion diagram as dominantly structure-originated, fluid originated or fully coupled. In contrast to intuitively obtained asymptotic parameters, this approach does not involve any restriction on the material and geometry of the structure. The derived closed-form solutions are compared with the numerical solutions and a good match is obtained. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with the difficulties in model testing deepwater structures at reasonable scales. An overview of recent research efforts to tackle this challenge is given first, introducing the concept of line truncation. Passive truncation has traditionally been the preferred method by industry; however, these techniques tend to suffer in capturing accurately line dynamic response and so reproducing peak tensions. In an attempt to improve credibility of model test data the proposed truncation procedure sets up the truncated model, based on line dynamic response rather than quasi-static system stiffness. Vibration decay of transverse elastic waves due to fluid drag forces is assessed and it is found that below a certain length criterion, the transverse vibrational characteristics for each line are inertia driven, hence with respect to these motions the truncated model can assume a linear damper whose coefficient depends on the local line properties and vibration frequency. Initially a simplified taut string model is assumed for which the line is submerged in still water, one end fixed at the bottom the other assumed to follow the vessel response, which can be harmonic or random. A dimensional analysis, supported by exact benchmark numerical solutions, has shown that it is possible to produce a general guideline for the truncation length criterion, which is suitable for any kind of line with any top motion. The focus of this paper is to extend this work to a more complex line configuration of a conventional deepwater mooring line and so enhance the generality of the truncation guideline. The paper will close with an example case study of a spread mooring system, applying this method to create an equivalent numerical model at a reduced depth that replicates exactly the static and dynamic characteristics of the full depth system. The dynamic characteristics of slender cable often present serried modes with low frequencies due to large structure flexibility resulted from high aspect ratio (ratio of length to diameter of cable), while the flow velocity distributes non-uniformly along the cable span actually in practical engineering. Therefore, the prediction of the vertex-induce vibration of slender cable suffered from multi-mode and high-mode motions becomes a challenging problem. In this paper a prediction approach based on modal energy is developed to deal with multi-mode lock-in. Then it is applied to the modified wake-oscillator model to predict the VIV displacement and stress responses of cable in non-uniform flow field. At last, illustrative examples are given of which the VIV response of flexible cable in nonlinear shear flow field is analyzed. The effects of flow velocity on VIV are explored. Our results show that both displacement and stress responses become larger as the flow velocity increasing; especially higher stress response companied with higher frequency vibration should be paid enough attention in practical design of SFT because of its remarkable influence on structure fatigue life.

Plasticized poly(L-lactide)-silica nanocomposite materials have been successfully synthesized by sol-gel process. The resultant nanocomposites were characterized by infrared spectra (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetry (TG), Tensile testing and scanning electron microscope (SEM). IR measurements show that vibration of C-O-C group is confined by silica network. Also the crystallization of poly (L-lactide) is partly confined by silica network. The presence of even small amount of silica largely improves the tensile strength of the samples, TGA results reveal that the thermal stability of samples is improved with silica loading.

Studying joint noise is an important parameter for diagnosing temporomandibular dysfunction. In this study, eight groups (n=9) were formed according to joint dysfunction classification, provided by employing vibration analysis equipment. Parameters for analyzing joint noise were: total vibration energy, peak amplitude, and peak frequency. Mouth opening range was also analyzed. Statistical analysis results for each parameter were significant at 1 %. Each analyzed group presented different noise characteristics. This allowed for inclusion of the groups within a determined value category. The patient group with normal condyle/disk relationship always presented the lowest values. The type of joint noise was characterized by analyzing total integral noise, peak amplitude, peak frequency, and mouth opening. Analyzing joint noise using electrovibratography suggests the type of joint dysfunction and may help to establish a diagnosis, as well as a treatment plan.

Fiber metal laminates (FML) offer significant improvements over current available materials for aircraft structures due to their excellent mechanical characteristics and relatively low density. Non-destructive testing techniques are being used in the characterization of composite materials. Among these, vibration testing is one of the most used tools because it allows the determination of the mechanical properties. In this work, the viscoelastic properties such as elastic (E') and viscous (E) responses were obtained for aluminum 2024 alloy; carbon fiber/epoxy; glass fiber/epoxy and their hybrids aluminum 2024 alloy/carbon fiber/epoxy and aluminum 2024 alloy/glass fiber/epoxy composites. The experimental results were compared to calculated E modulus values by using the composite micromechanics approach. For all specimens studied, the experimental values showed good agreement with the theoretical values. The damping behavior, i.e. The storage modulus and the loss factor, from the aluminum 2024 alloy and fiber epoxy composites can be used to estimate the viscoelastic response of the hybrid FML. The study of articular sounds using a computerized system (SonoPAK) in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) of inflammatory origin revealed an increase of vibratory energy when compared to asymptomatic individuals. The following conclusions were reached: 1. The amount of vibratory energy registered in these patients ranged from 8.50 to 57.61 Hz. The major vibrations occurred in the middle of the mandibular opening cycle; 2. The mean vibratory energy measured at less than 300 Hz was between 5.70 and 48.64 Hz and at higher than 300 Hz was between 3.70 and 8.99 Hz; 3. The peak amplitude in the patients with inflammation ranged from 0.35 to 3.96 Pascal and the peak of frequency from 83.20 to 120.20 Hz.

The aim of this study was to determine the cutting ability of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond burs coupled to an ultrasonic dental unit handpiece for minimally invasive cavity preparation. One standard cavity was prepared on the mesial and distal surfaces of 40 extracted human third molars either with cylindrical or with spherical CVD burs. The cutting ability was compared regarding type of substrate (enamel and dentin) and direction of handpiece motion. The morphological characteristics, width and depth of the cavities were analyzed and measured using scanning electron micrographs. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test (p < 0.05) revealed that the width and depth of the cavities were significantly greater when they were prepared on dentin. Wider cavities were prepared when the cylindrical CVD bur was used, and deeper cavities resulted from preparation with the spherical CVD bur. The direction of handpiece motion did not influence the size of the cavities, and the CVD burs produced precise and conservative cutting.

This paper is concerned with the use of distributed vibration neutralisers to control the transmission of flexural waves on a beam. Of particular interest is an array of beam-like neutralisers and a continuous plate-like neutraliser. General expressions for wave transmission and reflection metrics either side of the distributed neutralisers are derived. Based on transmission efficiency, the characteristics of multiple neutralisers are investigated in terms of the minimum transmission efficiency, the normalised bandwidth and the shape factor, allowing optimisation of their performance. Analytical results show that the band-stop property of the neutraliser array depends on various factors, including the neutraliser damping, mass, separation distance in the array and the moment arm of each neutraliser. Moreover, it is found that the particular attachment configuration of an uncoupled forcemoment-type neutraliser can be used to improve their overall performance. It is also shown that in the limit of many neutralisers in the array, the performance tends to that of a continuous neutraliser. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

A nonlinear spring element of a vibration isolator should ideally possess high static and low dynamic stiffness. A buckled beam may be a good candidate to fulfil this requirement provided its internal resonance frequencies are high enough to achieve a wide frequency range of isolation. If a straight beam is used, there is a singularity in the force-displacement characteristic. To smooth this characteristic and eliminate the singularity at the buckling point, beams with initial constant curvature along their length are investigated here as an alternative to the buckled straight beam. Their force displacement characteristics are compared with different initial curvature and with a straight buckled beam. The minimum achievable dynamic stiffness with its corresponding static stiffness is compared for different initial curvatures. A case study is considered where the beams are optimized to isolate a one kilogram mass and to achieve a natural frequency of 1 Hz, considering small amplitudes of vibration. Resonance frequencies of the optimized beams for different curvature are presented. It is shown that an order of magnitude reduction in stiffness compared with a linear spring is achievable, while the internal resonance frequencies of the curved beam are high enough to achieve an acceptable frequency range of isolation.

The vibration transmissibility characteristics of a single-degree-of- freedom (SDOF) passive vibration isolation system with different nonlinear dampers are investigated in this paper. In one configuration, the damper is assumed to be linear and viscous, and is connected to the mass so that it is perpendicular to the spring (horizontal damper). The vibration is in the direction of the spring. The second configuration is one in which the damper is in parallel with the spring but the damping force is proportional to the cube of the relative velocity across the damper (cubic damping). Both configurations are studied for small amplitudes of excitation, when some analysis can be conducted based on analytical expressions, and for large amplitudes of excitation, where the analysis is based on numerical simulations. It is found that the two nonlinear systems can outperform the linear system when force transmissibility is considered. However, for displacement transmissibility, the system with the horizontal damper exhibits some desirable properties, but the system with cubic damping does not. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
