The strong photoluminescence (PL) of SiOx:H prepared by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been systematically studied in conjunction with infrared and micro-Raman spectra. We have found that each PL spectrum is comprised of two Gaussian components, a main band and a shoulder. The main band might originate from amorphous silicon clusters embedded in die SiOx network, and its redshift with annealing temperature is due to expansion of the silicon clusters. The shoulder remains at about 835 nm in spite of the annealing temperature and possibly comes from luminescent defect centers. The enhanced PL spectra after 1170 degrees C annealing are attributed to the quantum confinement effects of nanocrystalline silicon embedded in the SiO2 matrix. We have examined photoluminescence (PL), IR absorption and Raman spectra of a series of hydrogenated amorphous silicon oxide (a-SiOx:H, (0 < x < 2)) films fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). Two strong luminescence bands were observed at room temperature, one is a broad envelope comprising a main peak around 670 nm and a shoulder at 835 nm, and the other, peaked around 850 nm; is found only after being annealed up to 1170 degrees C in N-2 environment. In conjunction with IR and Raman spectra, the origins of the two luminescent bands and their annealing behaviors are discussed on the basis of quantum confinement effects.

ZnO nanoparticles were synthesized in ethanolic solution using a sol-gel method. The structural and optical properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV absorption, and photoluminescence. After annealing at 200 degrees C, the particle size is increased and the peak of defect luminescence in the visible region is changed. A yellow emission was observed in the as-prepared sample and a green emission in the annealed sample. The change of the visible emission is related to oxygen defects. Annealing in the absence of oxygen would increase oxygen vacancies. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Er-doped silicon-rich silicon nitride (SRN) films were deposited on silicon substrate by an RF magnetron reaction sputtering system. After high temperature annealing, the films show intense photoluminescence in both the visible and infrared regions. Besides broad-band luminescence centered at 780 nm which originates from silicon nanocrystals, resolved peaks due to transitions from all high energy levels up to ~2H_(11/2) to the ground state of Er~(3+) are observed. Raman spectra and HRTEM measurements have been performed to investigate the structure of the films, and possible excitation processes are discussed.

CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ nanoparticles were prepared by reverse microemulsion with a functional monomer, methyl methacrylate (MMA), as the oil phase, and CeF3:Tb3+/poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanocomposites were obtained via polymerization of the MMA monomer. The nanoparticles and nanocomposites have been well characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), low- and high-resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), UV/vis transmission spectra, photoluminescence excitation, and emission spectra and luminescence decays. The well-crystallized CeF3 and CeF3:Tb3+ nanoparticles are spherical with a mean diameter of 15 nm. They show the characteristic emission of Ce3+ 5d-4f (313 nm, D-2-F-2(5/2); 323 nm, D-2-F-2(7/2)) and Tb3+ D-5(4)-F-7(J) (J = 6-3, with D-5(4)-F-7(5) green emission at 541 nm as the strongest one) transitions, respectively.

The ferrocene-derivatives bis(ferrocenyl-ethynyl)-1,10-phenanthroline (Fc(2)phen) and ferrocenoyltrifluoroacetone (Hfta) have been used to synthesize ferrocene-containing rare-earth beta-diketonate complexes. The complexes [Ln(tta)(3)(Fc(2)phen)] and [Ln(fta)(3)(phen)] (where Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Yb) show structural similarities to the tris(2-thenoyltrifluoroacetonate)(1,10-phenanthroline)lanthanide(III) complexes, [Ln(tta)(3)(phen)]. The coordination number of the lanthanide ion is 8, and the coordination sphere can be described as a distorted dodecahedron. However, the presence of the ferrocene moieties shifts the ligand absorption bands of the rare-earth complexes to longer wavelengths so that the complexes can be excited not only by ultraviolet radiation but also by visible light of wavelengths up to 420 nm. Red photoluminescence is observed for the europium(III) complexes and near-infrared photoluminescence for the neodymium(III) and ytterbium(III) complexes. The presence of the ferrocene groups makes the rare-earth complexes hydrophobic and well-soluble in apolar organic solvents.

The laser-induced luminescence studies of the rare earth titanates (R2Ti2O7) (R = La, Nd and Gd) using 355 nm radiation from an Nd:YAG laser are presented. These samples with submicron or nanometer size are prepared by the self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) method and there is no known fluorescence shown by these rare earths in the visible region. Hence, the luminescence transitions shown by the La2Ti2O7 near 610 nm and Gd2Ti2O7 near 767 nm are quite interesting. Though La3+ ions with no 4f electrons have no electronic energy levels that can induce excitation and luminescence processes in the visible region, the presence of the Ti3+ ions leads to luminescence in this region.

In this communication, we report on the formation of calcium hexahydroxodizincate dehydrate, CaZn(2)(OH)(6)center dot 2H(2)O (CZO) powders under microwave-hydrothermal (MH) conditions. These powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field-emission gum scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns confirmed that the pure CZO phase was obtained after MH processing performed at 130 degrees C for 2 h. FEG-SEM micrographs indicated that the morphological modifications as well as the growth of CZO microparticles are governed by Ostwald-ripening and coalescence mechanisms. UV-vis spectra showed that this material have an indirect optical band gap. The pure CZO powders exhibited an yellow PL emission when excited by 350 nm wavelength at room temperature. PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons were prepared by the coprecipitation method at room temperature without the presence of surfactants and processed in a conventional hydrothermal at different temperatures (from 60 to 120 degrees C) for 10 min. These micro-octahedrons were structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and micro-Raman (MR) spectroscopy, and its morphology was investigated by field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM). The optical properties were analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. XRD patterns and MR spectra confirmed that the PbMoO(4) micro-octahedrons are characterized by a scheelite-type tetragonal structure. FEG-SEM micrographs points, out that these structures present a polydisperse particle size distribution in consequence of a predominant growth mechanism via aggregation of particles. In addition, it was observed that the hydrothermal conditions favored a spontaneous formation of micro-octahedrons interconnected along a common crystallographic orientation (oriented-attachment), resulting in self-organized structures. An intense blue PL emission at room temperature was observed in these micro-octahedrons when they were excited with a 350 nm wavelength. The origin of the PL emissions as well as its intensity variations are explained by means of a model based on both distorted [MoO(4)] and [PbO(8)] clusters into the lattice.

Intense violet-blue photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature was verified in BaZrO3 (BZO) powders with structural order-disorder. Ab-initio calculations, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and PL were performed. Theoretical results showed that the local disorder in the network-formed Zr clusters present an important role in the formation of hole-electron pair. The experimental data and theoretical results are in agreement, indicating that the PL emission in BZO powders can be related to the structural order-disorder degree in the lattice. Hierarchical assemblies of CaMoO4 (CM) nano-octahedrons were obtained by microwave-assisted hydrothemial synthesis at 120 degrees C for different times. These structures were structurally, morphologically and optically characterized by X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. First-principle calculations have been carried out to understand the structural and electronic order-disorder effects as a function of the particle/region size. Supercells of different dimensions were constructed to simulate the geometric distortions along both they and z planes of the scheelite structure. Based on these experimental results and with the help of detailed structural simulations, we were able to model the nature of the order-disorder in this important class of materials and discuss the consequent implications on its physical properties, in particular, the photoluminescence properties of CM nanocrystals.

New lanthanide complexes with benzeneseleninic (ABSe) and 4-chloro-benzeneseleninic (ABSeCl) acids have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies. The emission spectra of the trivalent europium complexes presented the typical electronic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(j) transitions of the ion (J = 0-4). The ground-state geometries of the europium complexes have been calculated by using the Sparkle/AM1 model. From these results, the 4f-4f intensity parameters and energies of the ligand singlet and triplet excited states have been obtained. The lower emission quantum yield for the [Eu(ABSe)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) compound, as compared to the [Eu(Al(3)SeCl)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] one, can be associated to the higher numbers of water molecules, in the first and second coordination spheres, that contribute to the luminescence quenching. The [Eu(Al(3)Se)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) complex presents an intermediate state whose energy difference with respect to the first excited singlet state is resonant with three phonons from the water molecules, favouring a multiphonon relaxation process from the singlet state followed by a fast internal conversion process; this effect is less pronounced in the complex with the ABSeCl ligand. The luminescence decay curves of the gadolinium complexes indicate that the level responsible for the intramolecular energy transfer process has a triplet character for both compounds. The nephelauxetic effect in these compounds was investigated under the light of a recently proposed covalency scale based on the concept of overlap polarizability of the chemical bond.
