The correlations between the characters seen in experimental trials are generated by genetic and environmental factors and are estimated for the purpose of measuring the change in a character when the selection is practised in another. The objective was to correlate bunch weight with characteristics of growth and production of 4 genomic groups of banana: 'Nanicao-IAC-2001', 'Grand Naine', 'Caipira' and 'Nam' ( AAA); 'Ma a', 'Thap Maeo', 'Prata Ana' and 'Prata Zulu' (AAB), 'Fhia 01', 'Fhia 18', 'Prata Grauda' and 'Maca Tropical' (AAAB) and 'Figo Cinza' (ABB), Botucatu, Brazil. Some growth characteristics were evaluated such as: plant heights, the pseudostem circumference, number of leaves, number of days between planting and flowering, number of days between flowering and harvest and number of days from planting to harvest. These characteristics were measured at the flowering time. The production characteristics such as the bunch weigth, number of fruits, average weigth of the fruits, productivity, number of hands and weight, number, length and diameter of the fruits of the 2(nd) hand. The correlations between the characteristics studied varied for each genotype, but they all showed significant correlation between the bunch weight and the characteristics fruit weigth and productivity. The correlations involving all genotypes were predominantly positive and significant.

Knowledge of the mineral composition of grain and export of nutrients by the proso millet is important to enhance their use and promote more rational fertilizer recommendations. This work aimed to evaluate the protein and nutrients in the grain and export of macronutrient by the proso millet, cv. AL Tibagi, submitted to different doses and times of nitrogen top-dressing application. The experimental design was randomized block design in a 4x2 factorial scheme, constituted by four doses (0, 30, 60, and 120 kg ha(-1) of N) and two application times (14 and 28 days after emergency) of N fertilizer (urea) in top-dressing with four replications. Nitrogen top-dressing application increased grain yield and N content and protein in grains of proso millet, however, reduced the concentration of K. Nitrogen top-dressing fertilization increased the export of N, P, Ca, Mg and S for the grains of proso millet. Proso millet exported an average of macronutrients in the following order: 28.1 kg ha(-1) N; 3.4 kg ha(-1) P; 2.1 kg ha(-1) Ca; 1.4 kg ha(-1) S, 0.9 kg ha(-1) K and 0.8 kg ha(-1) Mg.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of glyphosate and 2,4-D for the Commelina benghalensis, Commelina diffusa and Commelina erecta. Three experiments were conducted in a greenhouse in a completely randomized in factorial scheme 3x7+1 (three herbicides x seven periods - hour after application) for two methods for measuring absorption of herbicides (simulated rain and cut the leaves applied), and a control without application, with four replications. The herbicides used were: glyphosate (1,080 g ha(-1)), 2,4-D amine (720 g ha(-1)) and, mixture glyphosate + 2,4-D (720 + 720 g ha(-1)). It was evaluated seven time intervals for washing (simulating rainfall after application) and cut (simulation abortion as a strategy of defense) the leaves applied: 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24 hours after herbicide application (HHA). The minimum period for absorption of glyphosate alone and in mixture with 2,4 -D presented a satisfactory control (> 90.0%) was around 12 HHA to C. benghalensis, C. diffusa and C. erecta, independently of washing or cut the leaves applied. This observed behavior can influence the time required without rain after herbicide application, besides that, the plants aborted part of the stem with injuries to avoid the herbicide translocation, especially when was used the 2,4-D alone. Concluded that glyphosate alone and in mixture with 2,4-D were efficient and that the differences in the control of species may be due to variation of time to absorb the herbicide.

The objective of this work was to evaluate conditions the effectiveness of acetolactate synthase (ALS) and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PROTOX) inhibitors in the Bidens pilosa control under two water deficit conditions, as well as to determine the influence of water deficit under the contents of soluble carbohydrates and protein of weed. The experimental design was randomized completely design with the treatments, with four replications, setup in a factorial scheme 4x2, with four herbicides (fomesafen lactofen, chlorimuron-ethyl and imazethapyr), and two water conditions (-0.5 MPa and -0.01MPa). At 7, 14, 21 and 28 days after application (DAA), was assessed visually control efficiency of herbicides. For the determination of organic solutes plants were collected at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours after application (HAA). Herbicides controlled efficiently plants of B. pilosa, except lactofen, whereas the water deficit affected the efficiency of control of all the herbicides. The soluble carbohydrate content increased with the imposition of water deficit, however, herbicides and water deficit further reduction of soluble proteins in plants of B. pilosa.

Pearl millet is recommended to produce dry matter for no-tillage system, as forage or for grain yield. The sowing time affects the crop development; thus, it can affect seed quality and initial storage conditions. The present research had as objective to evaluate the effects of sowing time on pearl millet seeds quality during the storage. Pearl millet seeds from twelve monthly sowing times were stored in environmental conditions, with no temperature and relative humidity control, and evaluated by seed moisture content, germination and vigor (first count of the germination test and electrical conductivity) for 0, 27 and 42 months of storage. The completely random design was employed, as a factorial experiment 12 x 3 (sowing time x storage time), with four replications. Means were compared by Tukey test (p <= 0.05). Pearl millet seeds produced in September resulted in the production of seeds with high germination and vigor, evaluated by the electrical conductivity test. The capacity of quality conservation of pearl millet seeds, for different storage times, is related to crop sowing time.

The biological control of the plants diseases, caused by fungi, is carried out using others organisms (predator, parasite or pathogen). Among the possible agents of biocontrol, a fungus has been highlighting as promising and it is known as Clonostachys rosea, asexual form of Bionectria ochroleuca. For that, it is necessary the in vitro production of spores of this fungus. In this study were tested several culture media to select those with better conidia production. The study was conducted at Plant Protection Division, in the Plant Production Department, FCA - UNESP, Botucatu campus, São Paulo state, Brazil. We used the isolated CCR64 (Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuária (EMBRAPA)-CNPMA). The means of crops were: BDA; Oats-Agar; Mazeina-Agar; Rice-Agar; V8-5%; V8-10%; V8-20%; TJ-5 %; TJ-10, TJ-20%. The sporulation of the fungus in different culture media was estimated at 8 days after of the incubation. The data were analyzed using method of comparing averages, using the Tukey test, at 5% probability, and the data processed, using (X + 1) 0.5 transformation. All culture media tested were able to produce conidia. It was found that the best culture media for production of conidia of Bionectria ochroleuca is the TJ-5%, followed by TJ-20%, with an sporulation average of 3,5 x 106 conidia / ml.

The use of tetrazolium testing is recognized in the soybean seed quality control due to the large amount of data which it provides. Although it is considered a quick test, in 1998 an alternative methodology was proposed for the seed preconditioning, which allows 10 hours of time saving in seeds preparation. The objective of this research is to compare the accuracy of the new and the traditional tetrazolium testing. Three soybean seed genotypes were used, Conquista, Garantia and M-soy 8400, all 2000/2001 crop. The seeds were evaluated in relation to germination, evaluated with the traditional (TZt) and the alternative (Tza) tetrazolium test as well as with the accelerated aging performed in two different conditions (45 degrees C 24h(-1) and 45 degrees C 72h(-1)). After aging, the seeds too were submitted to TZt and Tza testing. The experimental design was a randomized blocks, with four replicates the 50 seeds per genotype in every evaluation, with exception only for tetrazolium test, with two replicates. The averages were compared in the Tukey test level of 5% probability. The comparison between the two methodologies in relation to level of vigor (class 1 to 3) and germination potential (class 1 to 5) indicated no statistical discrepancies, for aged non-aged seeds. This, the use of the alternative tetrazolium test is recommend in case a reduced seed preparation time is needed.

Aiming to evaluate the application effect of different sewage sludge ( SS) doses, with and without nitrogen addition, in the castorbean initial development, one experiment was installed in an entirely randomized experimental design, in split-plot scheme 5 X 2, constituted of five sewage sludge doses (0, 4, 8, 16 e 32 Mg ha(-1)) and nitrogen addition or not (15 kg ha(-1)), with five replications. The experimental unit was constituted of plastic bags with capacity of 3,5 dm(3) of soil. Fifty days after emergency it was evaluated height of plants, dry matter of the aerial part, nutrient content in the aerial part, soil electrical conductivity and soil chemical analysis. The SS doses promoted increase in the height of plants and dry matter of castorbean. The concentration of N, K, Mg and S and also the micronutrients Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in the aerial part of the plants also suffered a positive effect with SS doses, the same didn't occur for the P and Ca concentrations. N addition increased the concentration of N, S, Cu and Zn in the plants. The SS did not present significant effect over pH levels, phosphorous, potassium, calcium, magnesium, organic matter and soil cation exchange capacity after the experiment conduction period.

Nitrogen (N), besides being one of the macro more absorbed by plants, is the that most limits the production of sunflower. The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutrient content in leaves, grains and nutrient export due to nitrogen levels in sunflower cultivation. A randomized experimental block design consisting of five treatments and four replications: T1 - 50 kg N ha(-1) divided by 10, 20 and 20 kg ha(-1), T2 - 70 kg N ha(-1) divided by 10, 30 and 30 kg ha(-1); T3 - 90 kg N ha(-1) divided by 10, 40 and 40 kg ha(-1), T4 - 110 kg N ha(-1) divided by 10, 50 and 50 kg ha(-1), T5 - 130 kg N ha(-1) divided by 10, 60 and 60 kg ha(-1). These applications were made in installments when sowing and 34 and 48 days after sowing. The parameters were evaluated in leaf nutrient content, nutrient content in grains and nutrient export. Under the experimental conditions it was found that the optimum foliar N were purchased at a dosage above 110 kg ha-1 N. With the increasing amount of N supplied in the sunflower crop was exported over this element, but not at the same rate of increase in dosage. The lowest dose of N the lowest rates of export of P, K, Mg, S, B, Cu, Mn and Zn, while increasing the dose of this nutrient decreased the export of Ca.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the sodium hypochlorite application in different levels in the fresh and dry biomass and in the uptake of macronutrients and micronutrients in plants of soybean and bean. The experiments were carried at the greenhouse of the "Departamento de Recursos Naturais/Ciência do Solo, FCA/UNESP, Botucatu/SP", in columns of rigid PVC with capacity to 1.0 liter of soil. The experimental design used in each experiment was entirely randomized, with 4 replications. The treatments in each experiment were constituted of 5 doses of sodium hypochlorite (0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 L ha(-1)). The following parameters were evaluated: fresh and dry biomass, macro and micronutrients contents in the plants leaves. The levels of sodium hypochlorite did not reflect significantly on the fresh and dry biomass of soybean and bean. The soybean dry biomass presented significant difference among the level of sodium hypochlorite. Average contents of macro and micronutrients obtained in bean leaves were not affected by the levels of sodium hypochlorite. The sulphur contents in soybean leaves presented significant difference. The sodium hypochlorite did not affect negatively the macro and micronutrients contents in leaves of soybean and bean.
