Hybrid active-passive damping treatments combine the reliability, low cost and robustness of viscoelastic damping treatments and the high-performance, modal selective and adaptive piezoelectric active control. Numerous hybrid damping treatments have been reported in the literature. They differ mainly by the relative positions of viscoelastic treatments, sensors and piezoelectric actuators. In this work we present an experimental analysis of three active-passive damping design configurations applied to a cantilever beam. In particular, two design configurations based on the extension mode of piezoelectric actuators combined with viscoelastic constrained layer damping treatments and one design configuration with shear piezoelectric actuators embedded in a sandwich beam with viscoelastic core are analyzed. For comparison purposes, a purely active design configuration with an extension piezoelectric actuator bonded to an elastic beam is also analyzed. The active-passive damping performance of the four design configurations is compared. Results show that active-passive design configurations provide more reliable and wider-range damping performance than the purely active configuration.

This work presents a performance analysis of multimodal passive vibration control of a sandwich beam using shear piezoelectric materials, embedded in a sandwich beam core, connected to independent resistive shunt circuits. Shear piezoelectric actuators were recently shown to be more interesting for higher frequencies and stiffer structures. In particular, for shunted damping, it was shown that equivalent material loss factors of up to 31% can be achieved by optimizing the shunt circuit. In the present work, special attention is given to the design of multimodal vibration control through independent shunted shear piezoelectric sensors. In particular, a parametric analysis is performed to evaluate optimal configurations for a set of modes to be damped. Then, a methodology to evaluate the modal damping resulting from each shunted piezoelectric sensor is presented using the modal strain energy method. Results show that modal damping factors of 1%-2% can be obtained for three selected vibration modes.

The aim of this paper is to present an economical design of an X chart for a short-run production. The process mean starts equal to mu(0) (in-control, State I) and in a random time it shifts to mu(1) > mu(0) (out-of-control, State II). The monitoring procedure consists of inspecting a single item at every m produced ones. If the measurement of the quality characteristic does not meet the control limits, the process is stopped, adjusted, and additional (r - 1) items are inspected retrospectively. The probabilistic model was developed considering only shifts in the process mean. A direct search technique is applied to find the optimum parameters which minimizes the expected cost function. This study examines the effects of partially or completely replacing pork backfat with soybean oil in mortadella production. Mortadella sausages of various formulations showed no differences (P > 0.05) in any of the technological and physico-chemical parameters evaluated (process yield, shear force, pH, water activity and proximate composition). When compared to products made with pork backfat, those made with vegetable oil had a higher unsaturated fatty acid content (P <= 0.05) and a similar cholesterol content (P > 0.05). Products made with vegetable oil scored lower (P <= 0.05) than those made with pork fat on all of the evaluated sensory attributes (colour, odour, flavour, texture and overall acceptability).

The effect of butylated hydroxytoluene/butylated hydroxyanisole blend (BHT/BHA), and rosemary and oregano extracts, added individually or in combination, on lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition was investigated on irradiated frozen beef burgers. Irradiation treatment was carried out using a (60)CO semi-industrial irradiator at doses of 6, 7 and 8 kGy, and then the treated meat samples were stored at -20 degrees C for 90 days. Lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of beef samples were evaluated by measurement of TBARS and gas chromatography, respectively. The results of the experiment showed that rosemary extract, applied alone and in combination with either BHT/BHA or oregano extracts was more effective in maintaining a low oxidation level in the samples compared to oregano extract used individually or in combination with BHT/BHA. Results also showed no significant differences (p > 0.05) in fatty acid composition in all analyzed samples, although some changes in terms of decreased PUFA and MUFA, beside of slight increase of SFA content were observed. However, these differences do not correlate positively neither with the irradiation dose nor the type of antioxidant. Thus, there is a potential application of these spices as natural antioxidants in irradiated meats. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of rosemary and oregano extracts in avoiding oxidative changes in beef burgers, and to evaluate the fatty acid profile of these products after electron beam exposition. Extracts, individually or in combination, were added to beef burgers and compared to synthetic antioxidants commonly used in food (butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole). The ground beef were submitted to electron beam irradiation at doses of 0, 3.5 and 7 kGy, and stored for 90 days. At regular time intervals, lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition were evaluated through measurement of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) and gas chromatography, respectively. The results indicate that, although the irradiation process triggers an increase in the lipid oxidation ratio expressed by TBARS values, great changes in the fatty acid profiles were not observed; instead, they continued to present characteristics very similar to that of non-irradiated beef. Thus, as irradiation doses of up to 7 kGy for frozen meat can make foods safe from foodborne pathogens, natural antioxidants derived from spices are able to reduce and avoid lipid changes that may cause a deterioration of the sensory quality of these foods, and these natural extracts offer a good choice for replacing synthetic additives.

The effect of addition of rosemary and oregano extracts on the sensory quality of irradiated beef burger was investigated. Batches of beef burgers were prepared with 400 ppm of rosemary or oregano extract and a group prepared with 200 ppm of synthetic butyl-hydroxytoluene (BHT)/butyl-hydroxy-anisol (BHA) was used as a control. Half of each formulation was irradiated at the maximum dose allowed for frozen meat (7 kGy). Samples were kept under frozen conditions (-20 degrees C) during the whole storage period, including during irradiation. Two analyses were performed after 20 and 90 days to verify the influence of the addition of the different types of antioxidants and the effect of irradiation and storage time on the acceptance of the product. Thirty-three and thirty-four untrained panelists were invited to participate in the first and second test, respectively. A structured hedonic scale ranging from 1 to 9 points was used in both analyses. BHT/BHA formulation obtained the highest score (6.73) and regarding the natural antioxidants, oregano received better acceptance (6.36). Irradiated samples formulated with oregano received a lower score, 6.03 in the first test and 5.06 in the second one, compared to the non-irradiated sample (6.36 and 5.79). In the second test (90 days), the sample formulated with BHT/BHA and which was irradiated received a higher score (6.59) when compared to the non-irradiated one (5.85). In both tests, the irradiated samples formulated with rosemary extract obtained a better score compared to the non-irradiated one, the scores being 5.00-3.82 and 5.00-3.76 in the first and second test, respectively. Our results allowed us to conclude that the natural antioxidants, rosemary and oregano extracts, present a good alternative for replacing synthetic additives in food industries, and that the irradiation process, in some cases, may help to enhance the sensory quality of food. The objective of this study was to investigate the ergogenic effects of caffeine on motor performance of judo female athletes. Thirteen female athletes (17.6 +/- 1.6 years, 58.3 +/- 11.4 kg, 162 +/- 4.1 cm, 22.5 +/- 4 kg/m(2)), registered in the State Federation of Judo for at least two years, participated in this study. The motor performance was assessed using the Special Judo Fitness Test (SJFT), from which was considered the number of throws in each block, the total number of throws, recovery and final heart rate (HR) and final score in SJFT. The subjects were tested in two different conditions, after ingestion of gelatin capsules of caffeine (6 mg.kg(-1)) or placebo (dextrose) 60 minutes before testing in a randomized double-blind, crossover study. The number of throws in each block did not differs between the caffeine (CAF) and placebo (PL) conditions (Block A: 4.53 +/- 0.51 CAF and 4.46 +/- 0.51 PL; Block B: 8.3 +/- 0.63 CAF and 8.23 +/- 0.72 PL; Block C: 7.23 +/- 0.59 CAF and 7.46 +/- 0.77 PL), as well as the total number of throws (20.07 +/- 1.18 CAF and 20.15 +/- 1.67 PL), HR (Final: 190.3 +/- 9.63 bpm CAF and 190.69 +/- 9.19 bpm PL; Recovery 162.07 +/- 13.78 bpm CAF and 164.3 +/- 9.64 bpm PL) and final score in SJFT (17.59 +/- 1.4 CAF and 17.75 +/- 1.98 PL). Ingestion of caffeine did not improve performance during high intensity and short duration exercise in judo fighters

Nucleoside diphosphate kinases play a crucial role in the purine-salvage pathway of trypanosomatid protozoa and have been found in the secretome of Leishmania sp., suggesting a function related to host-cell integrity for the benefit of the parasite. Due to their importance for housekeeping functions in the parasite and by prolonging the life of host cells in infection, they become an attractive target for drug discovery and design. In this work, we describe the first structural characterization of nucleoside diphosphate kinases b from trypanosomatid parasites (tNDKbs) providing insights into their oligomerization, stability and structural determinants for nucleotide binding. Crystallographic studies of LmNDKb when complexed with phosphate, AMP and ADP showed that the crucial hydrogen-bonding residues involved in the nucleotide interaction are fully conserved in tNDKbs. Depending on the nature of the ligand, the nucleotide-binding pocket undergoes conformational changes, which leads to different cavity volumes. SAXS experiments showed that tNDKbs, like other eukaryotic NDKs, form a hexamer in solution and their oligomeric state does not rely on the presence of nucleotides or mimetics. Fluorescence-based thermal-shift assays demonstrated slightly higher stability of tNDKbs compared to human NDKb (HsNDKb), which is in agreement with the fact that tNDKbs are secreted and subjected to variations of temperature in the host cells during infection and disease development. Moreover, tNDKbs were stabilized upon nucleotide binding, whereas HsNDKb was not influenced. Contrasts on the surface electrostatic potential around the nucleotide-binding pocket might be a determinant for nucleotide affinity and protein stability differentiation. All these together demonstrated the molecular adaptation of parasite NDKbs in order to exert their biological functions intra-parasite and when secreted by regulating ATP levels of host cells.

Background: Anti-lipoprotein lipase antibodies have been described in rare cases of patients with hypertriglyceridemia. However, no systematic study evaluating these antibodies in patients with this lipid abnormality has been undertaken. Objectives: To analyze the correlation of anti-lipoprotein lipase (anti-LPL) antibodies with other laboratory findings in patients with hypertriglyceridemia but no autoimmune disease. Methods: We evaluated 44 hypertriglyceridemic patients without autoimmune disease. Clinical and laboratory evaluations included analyses of comorbidities, fasting lipid profile and anti-LPL antibodies. Results: Mean patient age was 55 +/- 10 years; 46% of the patients were female and 64% were Caucasian. The mean disease duration was 94.4 months and mean body mass index 28.7 +/- 3.6 kg/m(2); 34.0% were diabetic, 25.0% were obese, 72.7% had systemic arterial hypertension, 75% were sedentary, 15.9% were smokers, 56.8% had a family history of dyslipidemia, 45.5% had a family history of coronary insufficiency, 20.5% had acute myocardial infarction, 9.0% had undergone revascularization and 11.0% angioplasty, 79.5% were being treated with statins and 43.2% were taking fibrates. Median triglyceride levels were 254 mg/dl (range 100-3781 mg/dl), and total cholesterol level was 233 +/- 111 mg/dl. High-density lipoprotein was 42.6 +/- 15.4 mg/dl, low-density lipoprotein 110.7 +/- 42.4 mg/dl and very low-density lipoprotein 48 +/- 15 mg/dl. Anti-LPL antibodies were identified in 2 patients (4.5%), both of whom had a family history of dyslipidemia, coronary insufficiency and acute myocardial infarction; one had undergone myocardial revascularization and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, and both were using fibrates and had normal triglyceride levels. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate a correlation between the immune response and dyslipoproteinemia in hypertriglyceridemic patients, suggesting that autoimmune disease contributes to the dyslipidemia process.

Background: Connective tissue diseases (CTD) may be associated with idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN). The prevalence and diagnostic implications of this association are, however, not well established. Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate, in TN patients, if rheumatologic clinical and laboratory findings could contribute to the early diagnosis of rheumatic diseases. Methods: Forty-six consecutive TN patients, 67% female, mean disease duration 8.78 +/- 7.25 years, and 47 controls were initially interviewed using a standard questionnaire based on common signs/symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren syndrome, mixed CTD, and systemic sclerosis. Autoantibodies were detected by standard techniques. Those with rheumatologic complaints or positive autoantibodies were referred to the Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic for a more detailed evaluation. Secondary causes of TN were excluded. Results: The frequency of Raynaud phenomenon (P = 0.026) and ANA reactivity (P = 0.04) were significantly higher in TN patients compared with controls. Fourteen TN patients were ANA positive. Seven of them reported concomitant rheumatic complaints, and interestingly, diffuse CTD was diagnosed in 4 (57%) of these patients: 1 systemic lupus erythematosus; 2 Sjogren syndrome; and 1 undifferentiated disease with scleritis and positive parotid scintigraphy. In all cases, TN preceded by at least 10 months the rheumatologic signs/symptoms. Moreover, these 4 TN patients with CTD had a higher frequency of sicca symptoms (P = 0.001) and higher titers of ANA (>= 1:320) (P = 0.006) than the remaining 42 TN patients without CTD diagnoses. Sixteen patients had isolated laboratory or clinical abnormalities, and none of them had CTD diagnoses. Conclusions: The concomitant presence of sicca symptoms and high titer ANA are clues for the early investigation of rheumatic diseases in TN patients.

alpha(5)beta(1) integrin from both wild-type CHO cells (CHO-K1) and deficient in proteoglycan biosynthesis (CHO-745) is post-translationally modified by glycosaminoglycan chains. We demonstrated this using [(35)S]sulfate metabolic labeling of the cells, enzymatic degradation, immunoprecipitation reaction with monoclonal antibody, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. The alpha(5)beta(1) integrin heterodimer is a hybrid proteoglycan containing both chondroitin and heparan sulfate chains. Xyloside inhibition of sulfate incorporation into alpha(5)beta(1) integrin also supports that integrin is a proteoglycan. Also. cells grown with xyloside adhered on fibronectin with no alteration in alpha(5)beta(1) integrin expression. However, haptotactic motility on fibronectin declined in cells grown with xyloside or chlorate as compared with controls. Thus, alpha(5)beta(1) integrin is a proteoglycan and the glycosaminoglycan chains of the integrin influence cell motility on fibronectin. Similar glycosylation of alpha(5)beta(1) integrin was observed in other normal and malignant cells, suggesting that this modification is conserved and important in the function of this integrin. Therefore, these glycosaminoglycan chains of alpha(5)beta(1) integrin are involved in cellular migration on fibronectin.

P>Leprosy still is an important public health problem in several parts of the world including Brazil. Unlike the diseases caused by other mycobacteria, the incidence and clinical presentation of leprosy seems little affected in immunosuppressed patients. We report the first case, to our knowledge, of a liver transplant patient who developed multi-bacillary leprosy. The patient presented with papules and infiltrated plaques with loss of sensation suggestive of leprosy 3.5 years after living-related liver transplantation for autoimmune hepatitis. A skin biopsy showing non-caseating macrophagic granulomas, neuritis, and intact acid-fast bacilli on Fite-Faraco stain, confirmed the diagnosis of borderline lepromatous leprosy. The donor of the liver did not show any evidence of leprosy. During follow-up, the patient presented 2 episodes of upgrading leprosy type I reactions, 1 mild before leprosy treatment, and 1 moderate 3 months after receiving standard multi-drug treatment (rifampicin, clofazimine, and dapsone). These reactions were accompanied by increase in liver function tests, especially of canalicular enzymes. This reaction occurred despite the patient`s triple immunosuppression regimen. The moderate reaction was successfully treated with further immunosuppression (prednisone, 0.5 mg/kg). Currently, the patient is asymptomatic, off leprosy medication, with routine liver transplant follow-up. The dilemmas in diagnosis and management of such a case are discussed and the literature on leprosy in transplant recipients is reviewed.

Lepromatous leprosy patients may develop necrotic lesions, usually in the context of Lucio phenomenon (LP) or severe erythema nodosum (EN). The clinical and histopathological characteristics of the necrotic manifestations of both entities may eventually be confounded. We describe a patient with lepromatous leprosy who developed, since the 4th month of her first pregnancy, recurrent necrotic lesions in lower limbs, which, at the postpartum, worsened and led to partial destruction of ears and nose. In addition, she referred painful nodes oil upper limbs since I year before pregnancy and intermittent swelling and tenderness of the ankles, which together with a right tibial and ulnar neuritis led to the diagnosis of, erythema nodosum leprosum (ENL). The histopathology of a biopsy of the upper limb (ENL) revealed a dermal-hypodermal inflammation with vasculitis and vascular lumen narrowing, whereas biopsy of the lower limb (LP) revealed small vessels with fibrin thrombi on the superficial layer of the dermis without inflammatory infiltrate and no evidence of vasculitis. Thus, besides having several different clinical features, LP and ENL result from different pathogenetic mechanisms. The histopathological and clinical features distinguishing both entities are proposed. This distinction is important because decrease in bacillary load through multidrug therapy is the main target in LP, whereas in ENL, concomitant reduction of the reaction by means of thalidomide or high-dose steroids is recommended.
