Pieces of Iowa’s Past, published by the Iowa State Capitol Tour Guides weekly during the legislative session, features historical facts about Iowa, the Capitol, and the early workings of state government. January 11, 2012 THIS WEEK: PROFESSORSHIPS AND STUDENT ENROLLMENT AT THE STATE UNIVERSITY BACKGROUND: The Ninth General Assembly convened January 13, 1862, and adjourned April 8, 1862—an 86-day session. The Brick Capitol in Des Moines had been the seat of government for four years. John R. Needham was the Lt. Governor presiding in the Senate, and Rush Clark was the Speaker of the House of Representatives. The Republican Party had the majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. The legislature had 140 members. Samuel Kirkwood was the governor, serving his second term. Governor Kirkwood was the first governor of Iowa to be re-elected to a second term and the first governor to serve nonconsecutive terms. He was 46 at the time of his first Inaugural on January 11, 1860. The 1860 census showed Iowa’s population at 674,913.

Blackberries have now become a common fruit in marketing outlets, particularly in North America and the European Union. Blackberries have enjoyed expansion due to a combination of factors including improved cultivars, expanded marketing efforts and fruit availability, and an overall increase in berry consumption, especially as fresh fruit, in many areas of the world. It is estimated that cultivated blackberries are grown in excess of 25,000 ha worldwide. World production, and cultivation are commented.The rapid expansion of the blackberry industry has been remarkable. New, higher quality, cultivars, modified production practices and new production regions have all combined to make this crop one that consumers expect to be available fresh year-round in their grocery stores. As new cultivars are developed that combine the industry's need for high quality arrivals with increased flavors and expanded dates of harvest, the blackberry industry should expand further.

Classifier combination for in vivo magnetic resonance spectra of brain tumours

In this paper we present a multi-stage classifier for magnetic resonance spectra of human brain tumours which is being developed as part of a decision support system for radiologists. The basic idea is to decompose a complex classification scheme into a sequence of classifiers, each specialising in different classes of tumours and trying to reproducepart of the WHO classification hierarchy. Each stage uses a particular set of classification features, which are selected using a combination of classical statistical analysis, splitting performance and previous knowledge.Classifiers with different behaviour are combined using a simple voting scheme in order to extract different error patterns: LDA, decision trees and the k-NN classifier. A special label named "unknown¿ is used when the outcomes of the different classifiers disagree. Cascading is alsoused to incorporate class distances computed using LDA into decision trees. Both cascading and voting are effective tools to improve classification accuracy. Experiments also show that it is possible to extract useful information from the classification process itself in order to helpusers (clinicians and radiologists) to make more accurate predictions and reduce the number of possible classification mistakes.

En aquest treball realitzarem una anàlisi contrastiva multilingüe de com s'expressa el moviment en un text en anglès i en la seva traducció al català, reforçant els resultats amb una comparació amb les corresponents traduccions al castellà, al francès i a l'alemany, per tal de comprovar si en el trajecte d'una llengua a l'altra es perd informació o no. Utilitzarem com a base la novel·la de John R. R. Tolkien, The hobbit or There and back again, i en concret el seu capítol sisè 'Fugir del foc i caure a les brases', ja que es tracta d'un text molt ric en escenes de moviment amb desplaçament.

Euroopan puolustusneuvosto Boydilaisena tulkintana

Tutkielmassa tutkitaan Euroopan puolustusviraston toiminnallisia mahdollisuuksia boydilaisessa viitekehyksessä. Eversti John Boyd on tunnettu ja arvostettu yhdysvaltalainen strategi, jonka kehittämää OODA-mallia sovelletaan laajasti yhteiskunnan eri osa-alueilla. Päätutkimuskysymyksenä on, millaisia toiminnallisia mahdollisuuksia Euroopan puolustusvirastolla on, ja olisiko perusteltua vaihtaa Puolustusviraston nimi Turvallisuusvirastoksi. Tutkimus on metodologiselta lähtökohdaltaan kvalitatiivinen eli laadullinen kirjallisuus-analyysi. Deduktiivista sisällönanalyysiä käytetään tutkimuksessa luomaan selkeä runko asiakirjoista ja lähteistä, joita tutkimuksen tarpeisiin on kerätty. Aineistona käytetään Boydin omaa materiaalia sekä EU:n asiakirjoja turvallisuudesta, Puolustusviraston perustamisesta ja sen tehtävistä. Tarkasteltaessa Euroopan puolustusvirastoa boydilaisessa viitekehyksessä voidaan havaita viraston tämänhetkisten tehtävien mahdottomuus. Viraston resurssit, tehtävät ja roolitus eivät ole tasapainossa, jolloin tehtävien hoitaminen tuloksellisesti ei ole mahdollista. OODA-mallin soveltuminen viraston tehtävien tukemiseen on vähintäänkin kyseenalaista, koska malli sivuuttaa Euroopan unionin virastojen tärkeimmän elementin, politiikan. Lisäksi malli on liian kaavamainen ja se yksinkertaistaa liikaa monimutkaisia ilmiöitä.
