The ultimate bearing capacity of a circular footing, placed over a soil mass which is reinforced with horizontal layers of circular reinforcement sheets, has been determined by using the upper bound theorem of the limit analysis in conjunction with finite elements and linear optimization. For performing the analysis, three different soil media have been separately considered, namely, (i) fully granular, (ii) cohesive frictional, and (iii) fully cohesive with an additional provision to account for an increase of cohesion with depth. The reinforcement sheets are assumed to be structurally strong to resist axial tension but without having any resistance to bending; such an approximation usually holds good for geogrid sheets. The shear failure between the reinforcement sheet and adjoining soil mass has been considered. The increase in the magnitudes of the bearing capacity factors (N-c and N-gamma) with an inclusion of the reinforcement has been computed in terms of the efficiency factors eta(c) and eta(gamma). The results have been obtained (i) for different values of phi in case of fully granular (c=0) and c-phi soils, and (ii) for different rates (m) at which the cohesion increases with depth for a purely cohesive soil (phi=0 degrees). The critical positions and corresponding optimum diameter of the reinforcement sheets, for achieving the maximum bearing capacity, have also been established. The increase in the bearing capacity with an employment of the reinforcement increases continuously with an increase in phi. The improvement in the bearing capacity becomes quite extensive for two layers of the reinforcements as compared to the single layer of the reinforcement. The results obtained from the study are found to compare well with the available theoretical and experimental data reported in literature. (C) 2014 The Japanese Geotechnical Society. By using the lower-bound theorem of the limit analysis in conjunction with finite elements and nonlinear optimization, bearing-capacity factors, N-c and N-gamma q, with an inclusion of pseudostatic horizontal seismic body forces, have been determined for a shallow embedded horizontal strip footing placed on sloping ground surface. The variation of N-c and N-gamma q with changes in slope angle (beta) for different values of seismic acceleration coefficient (k(h)) has been obtained. The analysis reveals that irrespective of ground inclination and the embedment depth of the footing, the factors N-c and N-gamma q decrease quite considerably with an increase in k(h). As compared with N-c, the factor N-gamma q is affected more extensively with changes in k(h) and beta. Unlike most of the results reported in literature for the seismic case, the present computational results take into account the shear resistance of soil mass above the footing level. An increase in the depth of the embedment leads to an increase in the magnitudes of both N-c and N-gamma q. (C) 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Bearing capacity factors because of the components of cohesion, surcharge, and unit weight, respectively, have been computed for smooth and rough ring footings for different combinations of r(i)= r(o) and. by using lower and upper bound theorems of the limit analysis in conjunction with finite elements and linear optimization, where r(i) and r(o) refer to the inner and outer radii of the ring, respectively. It is observed that for a smooth footing with a given value of r(o), the magnitude of the collapse load decreases continuously with an increase in r(i). Conversely, for a rough base, for a given value of r(o), hardly any reduction occurs in the magnitude of the collapse load up to r(i)= r(o) approximate to 0.2, whereas for r(i)= r(o) > 0.2, the magnitude of the collapse load, similar to that of a smooth footing, decreases continuously with an increase in r(i)= r(o). The results from the analysis compare reasonably well with available theoretical and experimental data from the literature. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Suction bucket foundations are widely used in the offshore platform for the exploitation of the offshore petroleum and natural gas resources. During winter seasons, ice sheets formed in Bohai Bay will impose strong impact and result in strong vibration on the platform. This paper describes a dynamic loading device developed on the geotechnical centrifuge and its application in modeling suction bucket foundation under the equivalent ice-induced vibration loadings. Some experimental results are presented. It is shown that when the loading amplitude is over a critical value, the sand at the upper part around the bucket softens or even liquefies. The excess pore pressure decreases from the upper part to the lower part of the sand foundation in vertical direction while decreases from near to far away from the bucket's side wall in the horizontal direction. Large settlements of the bucket and the sand around the bucket occur under the horizontal dynamic loading. The dynamic responses of the bucket with smaller size are heavier.

Centrifuge experiments are carried out to investigate the responses of suction bucket foundations under horizontal dynamic loading. The effects of loading amplitude, the size of the bucket and the structural weight on the dynamic responses are investigated. It is shown that, when the loading amplitude is over a critical value, the sand at the upper part around the bucket softens or even liquefies. The liquefactio...

Using the constitutive equation of a rubber-like materials given by Gao (1997), this paper investigates the problem of a cone under tension of a concentrated force at its apex. Under consideration is the axial-symmetry case and the large strain is taken into account. The stress strain fields near the apex are obtained by both asymptotic analysis and finite element calculation. The two results are consistent well. When the cone angle is 180 degrees, the solution becomes that of non-linear Boussinesq's problem for tension case.

Centrifugal experiments were carried out to investigate the responses of suction bucket foundations under horizontal and vertical dynamic loading. It is shown that when the loading amplitude is over a critical value, the sand at the upper part around the bucket is softened or even liquefied. The excess pore pressure decreases from the upper part to the lower part of the sand layer in the vertical direction and decreases radially from the bucket's side wall in the horizontal direction. Large settlements of the bucket and the sand layer around the bucket are induced by dynamic loading. The dynamic responses of the bucket with smaller height (the same diameter) are heavier.

This paper presents the results of a series of centrifuge model tests performed to study the behavior of suction bucket foundations for a tension leg platform in the Bohai Bay, China. The target lateral loadings were from ice-sheet-induced structural vibrations at a frequency of 0.8-1.0 Hz. The results indicate that excess pore water pressures reach the highest values within a depth of 1.0-1.5 in below the mud line. The pore pressures and the induced settlement and lateral displacement increase with the amplitude of the cyclic loading. Two failure modes were observed: liquefaction in early excitations and settlement-induced problems after long-term excitations. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
