El objetivo del presente trabajo es señalar y demostrar que la producción arquitectónica de la vivienda unifamiliar de la primera mitad del siglo XX en la ciudad de Corrientes es el de observar arquitecturas modernas en una ciudad no moderna. Así, la modernidad arquitectónica de la vivienda unifamiliar correntina entendida como manifestación cultural materializada, se manifiesta de manera poco autónoma y ligada a las fuerzas de la tradición histórico-urbana de la ciudad. Por otro lado, y en cuanto a los sistemas de producción, se manifiestan a partir de cualidades diferenciadas de los ejemplos históricos a partir de la adopción de la novedosa tecnología del hormigón armado y de las formalizaciones emergentes de las estéticas de las vanguardias.

E.1027, Maison en bord de mer is a small villa in Roquebrune Cap-Martin, built by architects Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici between 1926 and 1929. It was hailed as a landmark of modern architecture, and then forgotten. Over the years many transformations have been carried out, and these changes have altered the spatial qualities of the original project. Time and neglect have taken their toll, and until 2008 the villa was abandoned, a shadow of its former self. In order to state an appropriate restoration, a description of the house and its historic evolution has been made, comparing plans of its different transformations. After compiling the most common pathologies and restoration procedures in buildings of the Modern Movement in general, the particular pathologies of E.1027 are presented, concluding with a restoration proposal for E.1027 that considers aesthetical as well as technical aspects. This study involves an attempt to establish guidelines for the theoretical and technical aspects for restoration of architecture of the Modern Movement, using the Maison en bord de mer as an example.

The twentieth century brought a new sensibility characterized by the discredit of cartesian rationality and the weakening of universal truths, related with aesthetic values as order, proportion and harmony. In the middle of the century, theorists such as Theodor Adorno, Rudolf Arnheim and Anton Ehrenzweig warned about the transformation developed by the artistic field. Contemporary aesthetics seemed to have a new goal: to deny the idea of art as an organized, finished and coherent structure. The order had lost its privileged position. Disorder, probability, arbitrariness, accidentality, randomness, chaos, fragmentation, indeterminacy... Gradually new terms were coined by aesthetic criticism to explain what had been happening since the beginning of the century. The first essays on the matter sought to provide new interpretative models based on, among other arguments, the phenomenology of perception, the recent discoveries of quantum mechanics, the deeper layers of the psyche or the information theories. Overall, were worthy attempts to give theoretical content to a situation as obvious as devoid of founding charter. Finally, in 1962, Umberto Eco brought together all this efforts by proposing a single theoretical frame in his book Opera Aperta. According to his point of view, all of the aesthetic production of twentieth century had a characteristic in common: its capacity to express multiplicity. For this reason, he considered that the nature of contemporary art was, above all, ambiguous. The aim of this research is to clarify the consequences of the incorporation of ambiguity in architectural theoretical discourse. We should start making an accurate analysis of this concept. However, this task is quite difficult because ambiguity does not allow itself to be clearly defined. This concept has the disadvantage that its signifier is as imprecise as its signified. In addition, the negative connotations that ambiguity still has outside the aesthetic field, stigmatizes this term and makes its use problematic. Another problem of ambiguity is that the contemporary subject is able to locate it in all situations. This means that in addition to distinguish ambiguity in contemporary productions, so does in works belonging to remote ages and styles. For that reason, it could be said that everything is ambiguous. And that’s correct, because somehow ambiguity is present in any creation of the imperfect human being. However, as Eco, Arnheim and Ehrenzweig pointed out, there are two major differences between current and past contexts. One affects the subject and the other the object. First, it’s the contemporary subject, and no other, who has acquired the ability to value and assimilate ambiguity. Secondly, ambiguity was an unexpected aesthetic result in former periods, while in contemporary object it has been codified and is deliberately present. In any case, as Eco did, we consider appropriate the use of the term ambiguity to refer to the contemporary aesthetic field. Any other term with more specific meaning would only show partial and limited aspects of a situation quite complex and difficult to diagnose. Opposed to what normally might be expected, in this case ambiguity is the term that fits better due to its particular lack of specificity. In fact, this lack of specificity is what allows to assign a dynamic condition to the idea of ambiguity that in other terms would hardly be operative. Thus, instead of trying to define the idea of ambiguity, we will analyze how it has evolved and its consequences in architectural discipline. Instead of trying to define what it is, we will examine what its presence has supposed in each moment. We will deal with ambiguity as a constant presence that has always been latent in architectural production but whose nature has been modified over time. Eco, in the mid-twentieth century, discerned between classical ambiguity and contemporary ambiguity. Currently, half a century later, the challenge is to discern whether the idea of ambiguity has remained unchanged or have suffered a new transformation. What this research will demonstrate is that it’s possible to detect a new transformation that has much to do with the cultural and aesthetic context of last decades: the transition from modernism to postmodernism. This assumption leads us to establish two different levels of contemporary ambiguity: each one related to one these periods. The first level of ambiguity is widely well-known since many years. Its main characteristics are a codified multiplicity, an interpretative freedom and an active subject who gives conclusion to an object that is incomplete or indefinite. This level of ambiguity is related to the idea of indeterminacy, concept successfully introduced into contemporary aesthetic language. The second level of ambiguity has been almost unnoticed for architectural criticism, although it has been identified and studied in other theoretical disciplines. Much of the work of Fredric Jameson and François Lyotard shows reasonable evidences that the aesthetic production of postmodernism has transcended modern ambiguity to reach a new level in which, despite of the existence of multiplicity, the interpretative freedom and the active subject have been questioned, and at last denied. In this period ambiguity seems to have reached a new level in which it’s no longer possible to obtain a conclusive and complete interpretation of the object because it has became an unreadable device. The postmodern production offers a kind of inaccessible multiplicity and its nature is deeply contradictory. This hypothetical transformation of the idea of ambiguity has an outstanding analogy with that shown in the poetic analysis made by William Empson, published in 1936 in his Seven Types of Ambiguity. Empson established different levels of ambiguity and classified them according to their poetic effect. This layout had an ascendant logic towards incoherence. In seventh level, where ambiguity is higher, he located the contradiction between irreconcilable opposites. It could be said that contradiction, once it undermines the coherence of the object, was the better way that contemporary aesthetics found to confirm the Hegelian judgment, according to which art would ultimately reject its capacity to express truth. Much of the transformation of architecture throughout last century is related to the active involvement of ambiguity in its theoretical discourse. In modern architecture ambiguity is present afterwards, in its critical review made by theoreticians like Colin Rowe, Manfredo Tafuri and Bruno Zevi. The publication of several studies about Mannerism in the forties and fifties rescued certain virtues of an historical style that had been undervalued due to its deviation from Renacentist canon. Rowe, Tafuri and Zevi, among others, pointed out the similarities between Mannerism and certain qualities of modern architecture, both devoted to break previous dogmas. The recovery of Mannerism allowed joining ambiguity and modernity for first time in the same sentence. In postmodernism, on the other hand, ambiguity is present ex-professo, developing a prominent role in the theoretical discourse of this period. The distance between its analytical identification and its operational use quickly disappeared because of structuralism, an analytical methodology with the aspiration of becoming a modus operandi. Under its influence, architecture began to be identified and studied as a language. Thus, postmodern theoretical project discerned between the components of architectural language and developed them separately. Consequently, there is not only one, but three projects related to postmodern contradiction: semantic project, syntactic project and pragmatic project. Leading these projects are those prominent architects whose work manifested an especial interest in exploring and developing the potential of the use of contradiction in architecture. Thus, Robert Venturi, Peter Eisenman and Rem Koolhaas were who established the main features through which architecture developed the dialectics of ambiguity, in its last and extreme level, as a theoretical project in each component of architectural language. Robert Venturi developed a new interpretation of architecture based on its semantic component, Peter Eisenman did the same with its syntactic component, and also did Rem Koolhaas with its pragmatic component. With this approach this research aims to establish a new reflection on the architectural transformation from modernity to postmodernity. Also, it can serve to light certain aspects still unaware that have shaped the architectural heritage of past decades, consequence of a fruitful relationship between architecture and ambiguity and its provocative consummation in a contradictio in terminis. Esta investigación centra su atención fundamentalmente sobre las repercusiones de la incorporación de la ambigüedad en forma de contradicción en el discurso arquitectónico postmoderno, a través de cada uno de sus tres proyectos teóricos. Está estructurada, por tanto, en torno a un capítulo principal titulado Dialéctica de la ambigüedad como proyecto teórico postmoderno, que se desglosa en tres, de títulos: Proyecto semántico. Robert Venturi; Proyecto sintáctico. Peter Eisenman; y Proyecto pragmático. Rem Koolhaas. El capítulo central se complementa con otros dos situados al inicio. El primero, titulado Dialéctica de la ambigüedad contemporánea. Una aproximación realiza un análisis cronológico de la evolución que ha experimentado la idea de la ambigüedad en la teoría estética del siglo XX, sin entrar aún en cuestiones arquitectónicas. El segundo, titulado Dialéctica de la ambigüedad como crítica del proyecto moderno se ocupa de examinar la paulatina incorporación de la ambigüedad en la revisión crítica de la modernidad, que sería de vital importancia para posibilitar su posterior introducción operativa en la postmodernidad. Un último capítulo, situado al final del texto, propone una serie de Proyecciones que, a tenor de lo analizado en los capítulos anteriores, tratan de establecer una relectura del contexto arquitectónico actual y su evolución posible, considerando, en todo momento, que la reflexión en torno a la ambigüedad todavía hoy permite vislumbrar nuevos horizontes discursivos. Cada doble página de la Tesis sintetiza la estructura tripartita del capítulo central y, a grandes rasgos, la principal herramienta metodológica utilizada en la investigación. De este modo, la triple vertiente semántica, sintáctica y pragmática con que se ha identificado al proyecto teórico postmoderno se reproduce aquí en una distribución específica de imágenes, notas a pie de página y cuerpo principal del texto. En la columna de la izquierda están colocadas las imágenes que acompañan al texto principal. Su distribución atiende a criterios estéticos y compositivos, cualificando, en la medida de lo posible, su condición semántica. A continuación, a su derecha, están colocadas las notas a pie de página. Su disposición es en columna y cada nota está colocada a la misma altura que su correspondiente llamada en el texto principal. Su distribución reglada, su valor como notación y su posible equiparación con una estructura profunda aluden a su condición sintáctica. Finalmente, el cuerpo principal del texto ocupa por completo la mitad derecha de cada doble página. Concebido como un relato continuo, sin apenas interrupciones, su papel como responsable de satisfacer las demandas discursivas que plantea una investigación doctoral está en correspondencia con su condición pragmática.

Cognitive linguistics have conscientiously pointed out the pervasiveness of conceptual mappings, particularly as conceptual blending and integration, that underlie language and that are unconsciously used in everyday speech (Fauconnier 1997, Fauconnier & Turner 2002; Rohrer 2007; Grady, Oakley & Coulson 1999). Moreover, as a further development of this work, there is a growing interest in research devoted to the conceptual mappings that make up specialized technical disciplines. Lakoff & Núñez 2000, for example, have produced a major breakthrough on the understanding of concepts in mathematics, through conceptual metaphor and as a result not of purely abstract concepts but rather of embodiment. On the engineering and architecture front, analyses on the use of metaphor, blending and categorization in English and Spanish have likewise appeared in recent times (Úbeda 2001, Roldán 1999, Caballero 2003a, 2003b, Roldán & Ubeda 2006, Roldán & Protasenia 2007). The present paper seeks to show a number of significant conceptual mappings underlying the language of architecture and civil engineering that seem to shape the way engineers and architects communicate. In order to work with a significant segment of linguistic expressions in this field, a corpus taken from a widely used technical Spanish engineering journal article was collected and analysed. The examination of the data obtained indicates that many tokens make a direct reference to therapeutic conceptual mappings, highlighting medical domains such as diagnosing,treating and curing. Hence, the paper illustrates how this notion is instantiated by the corresponding bodily conceptual integration. In addition, we wish to underline the function of visual metaphors in the world of modern architecture by evoking parts of human or animal anatomy, and how this is visibly noticeable in contemporary buildings and public works structures.

Marcel Breuer arquitecto húngaro y afamado diseñador de mobiliario procedente de la Bauhaus, emigra a Estados Unidos en 1937, invitado por Gropius como profesor en Harvard. Allí comienzan, Breuer y Gropius, una nueva etapa basada en la experimentación de la casa como revisión de los postulados de la arquitectura moderna: la casa como máquina de habitar, propuesta por Le Corbusier, procedente de la vieja Europa; versus la humanización de la máquina a través del efecto del material sobre la estructura y la forma extendidas y en contacto con el territorio, propuesta por Frank Lloyd Wright procedente de la nueva América. Sus experimentos domésticos sobre la casa-cabaña acercaron los métodos tradicionales de la construcción americana a una visión renovada abstracta y pura, donde los modos de vida, los requerimientos básicos, prácticos y funcionales se transformaron en la conexión del "Arte de Construir" a través del material y su puesta en obra. La búsqueda de una respuesta clara del habitar que satisfacía objetivos opuestos y necesidades humanas, llevó a su arquitectura de la abstracción a reconciliar al hombre con la naturaleza, dotarla de arte y vida, arquitectura y paisaje que pasaron a convertirse en los ideales modernos de la cabaña americana. ABSTRACT. Marcel Breuer, Hungarian architect and famed to furniture's designer of the Bauhaus emigrated to America in 1937, invited by Gropius as a professor at Harvard. Breuer and Gropius, there begin a new stage based on the experimentation of the house as a revision to the postulates of modern architecture: the house as a dwell machine proposed by Le Corbusier from old Europe; versus the humanization of the machine through the effect of material on the structure and form extended and in contact with the territory, proposed by Frank LI. Wright from the new America. His experiments on the house-cottage approached traditional methods of the American construction methods to a new vision, abstract and pure, where ways of life, and basic, practical and functional requirements became the connection to "Art of Building" trough the material and its placing. The search for a clear answer of dwelling that satisfied conflicting objectives and human needs, led to the architecture of abstraction to reconcile man with nature, endow it with life and art, an architecture and a landscape that became the modern ideals of American cottage.

This study constitutes an establishment of the main guidelines for the restoration of modern architecture, considering the E.1027 Maison en Bord de Meras a prototype for theortical and technical features. E.1027 Maison en Bord de Mer is a small villa built by Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici between 1926 and 1929 in Roquebrune Cap-Martin, France. Later on, the original project was modified because of successive interventions, altering the spatial qualities until being eventually abandoned in 2008. As a consequence of these variations, a meticulous documentation of the building turns essential in order to undertake its restoration. For that purpose, a description of the house and its historical evolution has been made, comparing plans of its different transformations and ending with a detailed survey of the current state. After presenting the particular pathologies of Cray's villa, the research concludes with the restoration proposal for E.1027 itself

El presente ensayo pretende aportar una reflexión sobre el amplio territorio de la imagen en la arquitectura hoy. Para ello un buen ejemplo es el proyecto del Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse, realizado por Mies van der Rohe en el periodo de entre guerras de 1921/22. Muchas son las razones que han hecho de esta obra la elegida, pero una más actual sobresale del resto: que de los cientos de ensayos vertidos sobre esta obra solo se haya comentado -salvo alguna excepción- las características objetuales de lo directamente descrito por las vistas -como si fuera un fiel reflejo de la realidad- sin entrar a analizar la verdadera naturaleza física y simbólica de lo representado como expresión subjetiva –espacial- de una arquitectura. Si su importancia como punto de inflexión en el desarrollo inicial de una obra plenamente moderna es un motivo más que suficiente para dedicarle un estudio pormenorizado, ya que puede resultar crucial para comprender los inicios del autor en el Movimiento Moderno. Su presencia como un reducido conjunto de cuatro vistas perspectivas, mezcla de una fotografía del lugar y de un dibujo realizado sobre la misma, acarrea en nuestra opinión significaciones igual de importantes para la comprensión de esta arquitectura que todas aquellas ideas descritas sobre las mismas. Creadas en una época seminal, cuando el lenguaje de la fotografía y el cine están en pleno desarrollo, se puede afirmar que el conjunto de representaciones del Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse forman parte como referente histórico de una de las primeras arquitecturas virtuales que pertenecen de pleno derecho al Movimiento Moderno. Paradigma de las más absoluta actualidad, por encontrarse en esa frontera de lo nunca realizado, pero sí asumible espacialmente como realidad fotográfica, las imágenes del rascacielos se pueden considerar así como una de las primeras reflexiones sobre la naturaleza virtual del proyecto arquitectónico postindustrial. No siendo novedoso que la descripción fotográfica de una obra absorba y comunique por sí misma las múltiples propiedades que esta posee, como tampoco lo es que la mayoría de arquitecturas se den por conocidas actualmente a través de los medios. Sorprende que hasta hoy no se hayan analizado con la misma intensidad las múltiples razones que dieron lugar a unas imágenes cuya poética da forma por igual a la arquitectura que representan. Si la intención es reflexionar así sobre este hecho contemporáneo mediante un ejemplo paradigmático, certificado por la historia, nos veremos obligados a emplear una metodología acorde a la condición dual que toda imagen mediatizada produce en su lectura como mezcla fluctuante entre lo que se interpreta de manera autónoma a través de lo representado y de los significados que la imagen adquiere a lo largo de su recorrido como referente histórico. Esta ambivalencia interpretativa llevará a organizar este ensayo mediante dos bloques claramente diferenciados que, complementarios entre sí, siguen el orden de lectura que toda imagen de una arquitectura ofrece a través de los medios. Así, una primera parte, titulada La imagen de una arquitectura, analiza la interpretación que la historia y el autor han dado al rascacielos por medio de su uso en las diferentes exposiciones, revistas, tratados de estilos y monografías de las que ha formado parte. Este recorrido, que es el verdadero espacio donde estas arquitecturas residen, limitado -por una cuestión de poner orden- al estudio a los países que acogieron en vida al autor, servirá para establecer una primera narrativa que expone las diferentes posiciones que la crítica ha producido a lo largo del tiempo. La presencia del primer rascacielos junto al segundo, en la publicación que el arquitecto realiza de manera temprana en Frühlicht, obligará a incorporar esta segunda solución como una parte más del estudio. Cargada de las citas obligadas, de las diferentes personalidades que se han enfrentado a dichos proyectos, este primer análisis historiográfico establece un primer estado de la cuestión donde se revela una lectura ambivalente de los rascacielos. Si la interpretación directa de sus imágenes ha permitido profundizar en las características del vidrio y sus reflejos y en la desnudez de una estructura metálica como claros ejemplos de una expresión moderna y tecnológica de vidrio y el acero. Las particulares formas triangulares del primero y las formas sinuosas del segundo han dado lugar a una multitud de calificaciones, de ser ejemplo tanto de un Expresionismo como de un dadaísmo o constructivismo, que con el tiempo han ido creciendo hacia una admiración artística con una fuerte carga poética. Este lectura histórica, que remata con un breve periodo más actual donde se inicia el cuestionamiento de su carácter utópico y se recupera puntualmente su naturaleza como proyecto, servirá para plantear finalmente una serie de dudas que, sin respuesta aparente, exigen revisar la lectura de sus imágenes como parte de lo que realmente son: expresión de una nueva arquitectura que a partir de ese preciso momento entra de pleno derecho en el Movimiento Moderno. Por otro lado, la existencia en el discurso posterior del arquitecto de un proceso de formalizacion altamente valorado por su autor y la presencia de igual a igual de un lugar en las representaciones y planos de los rascacielos, que la historia parece haber obviado, servirán como razón más que suficiente para la revisión de unas relaciones iniciales con la vanguardia -todavía hoy poco definidas- así como para proponer la lectura renovada de dichas propuestas en altura por lo que también son: proyectos que responden a unas necesidades espaciales de un lugar y tiempo muy determinados. Esta segunda parte, denominada La arquitectura de una imagen, se plantea así más como una inmersión total en el mundo del proyecto que una simple descripción nominal del mismo. Conscientemente simétrica y opuesta a un primer bloque histórico, esta segunda parte -mucho más extensa y parte central de esta tesis- se concentra en el análisis de las imágenes como: aquel conjunto de eventos históricos que aplicados sobre la ciudad, el lugar, el rascacielos, y los procesos técnicos de la imagen dieron lugar a estas arquitecturas como razón de ser. Consecuentemente se tratará pues de bucear en las razones que, ocultas como proceso de formalización, llevaron a Mies a dar un paso más allá hacia a una nueva manera de hacer, ver y pensar su arquitectura, de expresar un espacio. La aproximación a estas imágenes radicará por tanto en resaltar al mismo tiempo la naturaleza de unas representaciones cuyas características fotográficas son el fiel reflejo de una época donde los nuevos medios visuales –cine y fotografía- empiezan a ser cuestionados por su excesiva utilización. La complejidad de unos hechos coincidentes en el tiempo obligará a dividir este estudio en un primer acercamiento general, a la respuesta dada por una mayoría de participantes al concurso, para así cotejar la importancia de una actitud proyectual y contextual común de Mies y sus compañeros. Mezcla de requerimientos y necesidades de la propia historia de la parcela, de las peculiaridades de un lugar y las exigencias programáticas del concurso; el siguiente paso consistirá en reconstruir el proceso de formalización del conjunto de dibujos que caracterizan ambos proyectos para así comprender los mecanismo que, suspendidos como traslaciones entre las diferentes representaciones, operan en la realización física de dichas imágenes y complementan como pensamiento la idea arquitectónica de los mismos. Con lo que se pretende ofrecer dos cosas: una interpretación que tenga en cuenta la novedosa naturaleza de la manera de pensar lo fotográfico en el arquitecto, así como la particular idiosincrasia del momento en que estas concurren. Dicho de otro modo, se realizará una aproximación de las vistas del primer rascacielos que tenga en cuenta la historia tecnológica y visual que rodea al evento y las características de una ejecución física todavía hoy sin aclarar del todo. El descubrimiento de una serie de incoherencias geométricas en las plantas, alzado y vistas del primer proyecto llevará a argumentar la presencia de un trampantojo que, nunca antes revelado, se entiende lleno de unas intenciones espaciales plenamente vanguardistas. Interpretación arquitectónica de las imágenes donde la presencia de una serie de elementos directamente ligados al lenguaje fotográfico y cinematográfico se traduce en una nueva lectura espacial plenamente dinámica llena de dislocación, ritmo y simultaneidad alejada de la idea de ver la forma como un elemento permanentemente fijo. Sugerencia que nos lleva directamente a la lectura del segundo proyecto de rascacielos como una clara continuación de lo imaginado en el primero. Para finalizar, tras una revisión biográfica -previa al proyecto- que desvela unas preocupaciones urbanas y un deseo de cambio anterior al concurso de la Friedrichstrasse, se comparan estas nuevas significaciones espaciales con una práctica de vanguardia que, coetánea a la convocatoria de 1921, demuestran unas investigaciones muy similares con unos mismos intereses cinematográficos. La lectura de las propuestas de tres artistas próximos en ese momento al arquitecto -como son Hans Richter, Moholy-Nagy y El Lissitzky- permiten demostrar unas preocupaciones muy similares a lo conseguido por Mies con los rascacielos que parecen haber servido de ejemplo y motivación mutua para el surgimiento de una nueva espacialidad -más fluida-. Esta lectura permitirá recuperar la importancia de estos dos proyectos como la expresión directa de una nueva manera de pensar y hacer su arquitectura que ya no tendrá vuelta atrás en la obra de Mies. A la vez que recuperar la potencialidad poética de unas vistas que, así definidas reiteradamente por la crítica, se revelan ahora como directas transmisoras de ese deseo de cambio arquitectónico evidenciado en los proyectos posteriores. Racionalización de una poética que al ir más allá de la forma directamente transcrita permite establecer una última reflexión general sobre como opera la imagen en la arquitectura, así como la pertinencia crítica de este proyecto para con el mundo virtual de hoy. En definitiva, más allá del poder evocador de estas representaciones, este será un estudio que pretende cuestionar las características que la imagen de la arquitectura puede proponer más allá de su literalidad por medio de la fascinante interacción que se produce entre la imagen y lo espacialmente imaginado. Encuentros, recursos e intereses de una respuesta plenamente arquitectónica que, además de dar luz a un cambio tan inclasificable como moderno, abre el camino a la interpretación de un proceso de formalizacion que, reiteradamente defendido por su autor justifican una intensidad poética dada por la historia y reafirman una preocupación artística a menudo desmentida por su autor. Dicho de otro modo, si profundizar en las razones arquitectónicas, históricas y técnicas que llevan a Mies a realizar sus rascacielos, por medio de su relación con la vanguardia y el cine, arrojan luz y explican el cambio que se está gestando en el arquitecto cara una nueva espacialidad fluida. Reflexionar sobre su naturaleza espacial -de estas imágenes ya icónicas- equivale a aportar una reflexión crítica sobre la naturaleza simbólica de la imagen de la arquitectura hoy. “Aunque el puesto clave que ocupa el Rascacielos de la Friedrichstrasse dentro de la historia de la arquitectura moderna nunca ha sido seriamente cuestionado, la opinion critica al respecto siempre ha estado dividida. Asi calibrada, la propuesta de Mies para la Friedrichstrasse es radicalmente moderna en mas de un sentido enfatizado por Johnson.” 1 W.Tegethoff ABSTRACT This essay reflects on the broad territory of the image in today’s architecture. One good example is the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper design by Mies van der Rohe in 1921/22, during the period between World Wars I and II. There are many reasons why this work has been chosen, but one of the most recent stands out above the rest: of the hundreds of essays written on this work, comments have been made only (with the odd exception) on the objectual characteristics of what has been directly described by the views (as if it were a genuine reflection of reality), without analysing the real physical and symbolic nature of the representation a subjective (spatial) expression of architecture. If its importance as a point of inflection in the initial development of a completely modern work is more than enough reason to make a detailed study, since it may be crucial for understanding the author’s beginnings in the Modern Movement. Its presence as a reduced set of four views, the combination of a photograph of the place and a drawing made of it, in our opinion, carry meanings that are as important for understanding this architecture as all the ideas described about them. Created during an early period, when the languages of photography and cinema were in full swing, it can be said that the perspectives of the Friedrichstrasse Skyscraper form a historical reference of one of the first virtual architectures that belong entirely to the Modern Movement. A paradigm of the most absolute modernity owing to the fact that it is on that frontier of the never-accomplished, but spatially assumable as photographic reality, the images of the skyscraper can be considered as one of the first reflections on the virtual nature of post-industrial architectural design. There is nothing new in the fact that the photographic description of work absorbs and communicates on its own the multiple properties it involves and there is nothing new in the fact that most architectures become known today through the media. It is surprising that no analysis has been made to date, with the same intensity, of the many reasons that led to a number of images whose poetry add form to the architecture they represent. If the intention is to reflect on this contemporary fact using a paradigmatic example certified by history, we will be forced to use a methodology that corresponds to the dual condition produced by the interpretation of all media images as a fluctuating combination of what is interpreted independently through the representation and meanings the image acquires as a historical reference. This ambivalent interpretation will lead this essay to be structured in two clearly different and complementary blocks that follow the reading order offered by any image of architecture in the media. Thus, a first part, titled The image of an architecture, analyses the interpretation history and the author have given to the skyscraper through its use in the various exhibitions, magazines, style agreements and monographs in which it has been included. This examination, which is the real space in which these architectures reside, is (to delimit and organise the study) restricted to countries in which the author lived during his lifetime and it will help establish a first narrative that considers the different interpretations made by critics over time. The presence of the first skyscraper next to the second one in the publication the architect makes early on in Frühlicht will require the second solution to be incorporated as another part of the study. Laden with necessary quotes by the various personalities who have examined said designs, this first historiographical analysis establishes an initial state of the question that reveals an ambivalent interpretation of skyscrapers. If the direct interpretation of the images has made it possible to closely examine the characteristics of the glass and its reflections and the nudity of a metal structure as clear examples of a modern and technological expression of glass and steel. The particular triangular shapes of the former and the sinuous shapes of the latter have generated many classifications that suggest it is an example of Expressionism, Dadaism or Constructivism, which have grown over time into artistic admiration laden with poetry. This historical reading, which concludes with a more recent short period that begins to question the utopian character and recovers its nature as a project, will finally consider a number of doubts that have no apparent answer and require a revision of the reading of the images as part of what they actually are: expression of a new architecture that becomes part of the Modern Movement as from that precise moment. In addition, the existence in the architect’s subsequent discourse of a formalisation process highly valued by the author and the equal presence of a place in the representations and plans of a skyscraper history seems to have forgotten, will stand as more than sufficient reason for a revision of initial relations with the avantgarde -not particularly well defined today- together with a renewed reading of said vertical proposals for what they also are: projects that respond to the special needs of a very specific place and time. This second part, titled The architecture of an image, is presented more as a total immersion in the project world than a mere nominal description of it. Deliberately symmetrical and opposite to a historic first bloc, this second part (much longer and central part of the thesis) it will focus on analysing images as: the set of historical events that affected the skyscraper, city, place and technical processes image to provide these architectures with their raison d’être. Consequently, the aim is to delve in the reasons which, hidden as a formalisation process, led Mies to move on to a new form of doing, seeing and thinking his architecture, of expressing a space. The approach to these images will therefore lie in highlighting the nature of a number of representations whose photographic features are the true reflection of a period in which the new visual media (cinema and photography) begin to be questioned due to excessive use. The complexity of facts that coincide in time will require this study to be divided into a first general approach, with a response given by most of the participants in the competition, to compare the importance of a common approach in terms of project and context of the response given by Mies and his colleagues. A combination of requirements and needs of the very history of the plot of land, the peculiarities of a place and the programmatic requirements of the competition; the next step will reconstruct the formalisation process of the set of drawings that characterise both to understand the mechanism which, suspended like translations between the different representations, operates in the realisation of said images and complements as thought their architectural idea. The aim is thus to offer two things: an interpretation that takes into account the new way in which the architect works with photography, together with the particular idiosyncrasy of the moment at which they occur. In other words, the approach will focus on the views of the first skyscraper, which takes into account the technological and visual history that surrounds the event and the characteristics of a physical execution that still remains unexplained in full. The subsequent discovery of a number of geometrical incoherences in the floor plans, elevations and views of the first project will lead to an argument for the presence of trompe l’oeil which, never before revealed, is seen as laden with completely avant-garde spatial intentions. Architectural interpretation of the images where the presence of a number of elements directly linked to the languages of photography and cinema is translated into a new spatial reading that is completely dynamic and full of dislocation, rhythm and simultaneity far-removed from the idea of seeing shape as a permanently fixed element. This suggestion takes us to directly to the second skyscraper design as a clear continuation of what he imagined in the first. To end, after a preliminary biographical revision (previous to the project) that reveals urban concerns and a desire for change before the Friedrichstrasse competition, a comparison is made of these new spatial meanings with avant-garde practice which, contemporary with the 1921 competition, show very similar investigations with the same cinematographic interest. The reading of the proposals of three artists close to the architect at that time -i.e. Hans Richter, Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky- reveals concerns that are very similar to what Mies achieved with the skyscrapers that seem to have been used as an example and mutual motivation for the creation of a new (more fluent) spatiality. This interpretation will make it possible to recover the importance of these two projects as the direct expression of a new way of thinking and doing his architecture that was to remain fixed in Mies’ work. This also gives rise to the possibility of recovering the poetic potential of views which, as defined repeatedly by the critics, now stand as the direct transmitters of the desire for architectural change shown in later projects. A rationalisation of poetry which, by going beyond the directly transcribed form, gives rise to the establishment of one general final reflection on how the image works in architecture, together with the critical relevance of this design for today’s virtual world. In short, beyond the evocative power of images this will be a study which questions the characteristics the image of architecture can propose beyond its literality through the fascinating interaction between the image and spatially imagined. Encounters, resources and interests of a completely architectural response that, besides sheds light to a change that is as non-classifiable as it is modern, shows the way to the interpretation of a formalisation process which, repeatedly defined by the author, justifies a poetic intensity and confirms an artistic concern often denied by the author. In other words, examining the architectural, historical and technical reasons that led Mies to create his skyscrapers, thanks to its relationship with the avant-garde and cinema, sheds light on and explains the change taking place in the architect with regard to a new fluent spatiality. Reflecting on the spatial nature -of these iconic images- is tantamount to a critical reflection on the symbolic nature of architecture today. “Although the key position of the Friedrichstrasse Office Building within the early history of modern architecture has never been seriously challenged, critical opinion on it has always been divided. Ever since the publication of Philip Johnson’s monograph on Mies in 1947, the curtain wall as a transparent skin sheathing the skeleton structure has frequently been hailed as a pioneering breakthrough. Other views of the building, stressing its supposedly Expressionist plan, have seen it as a somewhat less adventurous effort. In fact, the project has never been regarded in abroad context. Esta tesis estudia el papel de la metáfora como instrumento arquitectónico en el debate y las propuestas para superar la ortodoxia de la arquitectura moderna a partir de mediados del siglo XX. En arquitectura, la utilización del procedimiento que constituye la metáfora se apoya en una consideración semántica de la arquitectura y se ha usado constantemente a lo largo de la historia para desarrollar nuevas propuestas, basándose en la comparación con modelos conocidos. En este trabajo se examina la notable presencia que adquirió este instrumento en las propuestas críticas a la arquitectura moderna ortodoxa, debido a la importancia que tuvieron los aspectos semánticos en el debate sobre la continuidad y vigencia de los postulados de la arquitectura moderna. Con este estudio se ha indagado sobre las razones y la frecuencia con las que aquellos arquitectos que adoptaron una actitud crítica hacia la arquitectura moderna se refirieron a las relaciones metafóricas en sus propuestas alternativas. Para mostrar cómo las metáforas formaron parte de los mecanismos de cambio de la arquitectura en este periodo, recuperando un mayor potencial creativo para abordar los proyectos arquitectónicos, se han estudiado una serie de ejemplos pertinentes y relevantes. En cada uno de los capítulos se han analizado las objeciones más importantes que fueron planteadas frente a la arquitectura moderna por un arquitecto o grupo de arquitectos, seleccionados entre aquéllos que tomaron parte en este debate, y se estudia la inclusión de la metáfora en las alternativas que propusieron en cada caso. Además de una actitud crítica con la arquitectura moderna, todos los arquitectos seleccionados comparten una consideración semántica de la arquitectura y han expuesto sus ideas y posturas tanto en obras proyectadas y construidas, como en escritos o comentarios sobre su manera de entender y proyectar arquitectura. Esta doble producción ha permitido analizar, comparativamente, el papel de la metáfora en sus enfoques y propuestas críticas y en la realización de sus obras como alternativas a las mismas. Al mismo tiempo, la investigación profundiza en el conocimiento de la utilización de la metáfora como herramienta arquitectónica. A través del recorrido por las distintas maneras de entender este instrumento que pueden observarse en algunos de los arquitectos de la segunda mitad del siglo XX, se exponen tanto las posibilidades como los aspectos más críticos de la utilización de la metáfora en arquitectura. La variada utilización de la noción de metáfora en arquitectura se ve reflejada en las diversas consideraciones que hacen de la misma los arquitectos estudiados. La tesis se ha ocupado de distinguir cada uno de estos enfoques, haciéndose eco de la pluralidad con la que puede abordarse el concepto de metáfora de manera general y en arquitectura en particular. Así, algunos arquitectos del Team 10, la utilizan como un instrumento de ampliación y renovación semántica de la arquitectura moderna, que propone una síntesis de lo viejo y lo nuevo. Para Robert Venturi, se trata de un recurso con capacidad de persuadir y recrear, renovando semánticamente la arquitectura. Charles Jencks considera que es un procedimiento semántico esencial de la arquitectura, olvidado por los arquitectos modernos, cuya recuperación supone un rasgo diferencial de la arquitectura posmoderna respecto a la moderna. Para Aldo Rossi, es una manera de materializar las relaciones analógicas que constituyen su propuesta para proyectar una arquitectura de racionalismo exaltado frente a un racionalismo convencional. Peter Eisenman la valora porque inventa otras arquitecturas diferentes a las preconcebidas anteriormente, a pesar de que rechaza su capacidad representativa y expresiva. Rafael Moneo la utiliza para contraponerse al determinismo, como instrumento de innovación de la forma arquitectónica que construye una dinámica entre la contingencia y la necesidad. Finalmente, para Frank Gehry supone un procedimiento creativo y subjetivo con el que enfrentarse tanto a la arquitectura moderna como a la posmoderna con una arquitectura nueva y abierta a referencias inusuales. De esta manera, a través de los distintos capítulos, el estudio pretende componer un mosaico de posturas que manifieste los vínculos y las diferencias existentes entre estos arquitectos con relación a los temas estudiados: crítica y alternativas a la arquitectura moderna, semántica de la arquitectura, metáfora y otros conceptos relacionados. A su vez, la aparición continuada de la metáfora en los diferentes capítulos, y de los temas con los que está relacionada, manifiesta el protagonismo de esta herramienta arquitectónica en las propuestas de evolución y cambio de la arquitectura del periodo estudiado. ABSTRACT This thesis studies the role of the metaphor as an architectural tool in the debate and proposals to overcome the orthodoxy of modern architecture that took place since the middle part of the Twentieth Century. In architecture, the usage of the process which the metaphor constitutes is based in a semantic consideration of architecture and historically it has been used many times to develop new proposals, always based in the comparison with known models. This work examines the significant presence that this tool acquired in the proposals critical with orthodox modern architecture, due to the importance that the semantic aspects had in the debate on the continuity and validity of modern architectures postulates. This study also looks into the motives and frequency that those architects which adopted a critical attitude towards modern architecture alluded to the metaphorical relations in their alternative proposals. To demonstrate how during that period metaphors were imbued in the mechanisms of change of architecture, recovering a higher creative potential to approach architectural projects, a series of pertinent and relevant examples are studied. Each chapter examines the most important objections on modern architecture made by an architect or group of architects, selected among those who participated in this debate, and studies the inclusion of metaphor in the alternatives proposed in each case. Besides a critical attitude towards modern architecture, all the selected architects share a semantic consideration of architecture and have exposed their ideas and postures through projected and finalized works as in writings or commentaries on their way of understanding and projecting architecture. This double production allowed to analyse, in a comparatively manner, the role of metaphor in their approaches and critical proposals as in the execution of their works. At the same time, the research conducted further analyses the body of knowledge on the usage of metaphor as an architectural tool. By looking over the different ways some of the architects of the second half of the Twentieth Century understood this tool, both the possibilities and the most critical aspects of the usage of the metaphor in architecture can be exposed. The various usages of the notion of metaphor in architecture are reflected in the multiple considerations done about it by the selected architects. This thesis differentiates each one of those approaches, echoing the plurality with which the concept of metaphor can be addressed both in broader terms and more particularly in architecture. In this sense, some architects of Team 10 used it as a mean of semantic extension and renewal of modern architecture, proposing a synthesis between the old and the new. For Robert Venturi it is a resource with the capacity to persuade and recreate, semantically renewing architecture. Charles Jencks considers it an essential semantic procedure of architecture, forgotten by the modern architects, and which recovery represents a differential trait of post-modern architecture in relation to modern architecture. For Aldo Rossi, is a way of materializing the analogical relations which represent his proposal to project architecture of exalted rationalism as opposed to a more conventional rationalism. Peter Eisenman values it because it invents other architectures different from the preconceived before, even if he refuses its representational and expressive capacity. Rafael Moneo uses it to counter determinism, as an innovation tool of the architectonical form which generates dynamics between contingency and necessity. Finally, for Frank Gehry it supposes a creative and subjective process to face both modern architecture and post-modern architecture with a new architecture open to unusual references. As such, through its different chapters, this study aims to compose a mosaic of postures which expresses the links and the differences between those architects in relation to the topics examined: criticism and alternatives to modern architecture, semantics of architecture, metaphor and other related concepts. At the same time, the continuous presence of the metaphor in the different chapters, and of the issues it relates to, shows the importance of this tool in the proposals of evolution and change of architecture in the period considered.

Desde la revolución ilustrada e industrial de finales del s. XVIII se ha venido desarrollando, con fuerza inigualada a lo largo de la historia, algo que es consustancial al hombre y que le ha permitido constituirse como tal frente al resto de animales: la técnica. Como sentencia Ortega, no hay hombre sin técnica. Pero, al mismo tiempo, va quedando cada vez más claro -como también nos señala Ortega- que el sentido y la causa de la técnica están fuera de ella, y que la técnica no es en rigor lo primero, sino que su finalidad le ha de ser prefijada por un deseo original pre-técnico. Si esto no fuera así el hombre perdería su propio sentido, pues el hombre es puro afán, un ente cuyo ser consiste no en lo que ya es, sino en la que aún no es. Sin embargo, el progresivo desencantamiento del mundo como consecuencia del desarrollo de la sociedad industrial vino a sustituir los viejos mitos por una interpretación racional y abstracta que renunciaba a cualquier búsqueda de sentido que trascendiese los hechos brutos. De este modo, la perdida de sentido del hombre frente a la técnica desarrollada por él mismo le dejaba desnortado y convertido en un sujeto pasivo en manos de un malentendido progreso. Frente a esta pérdida de sentido detectada ya a principios del siglo XX y denunciada con más fuerza a partir de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el postmodernismo del último tramo del pasado siglo pudo no sólo oficializar su desaparición, sino consignar su deslegitimación. Ante a esto, sostenemos la necesaria existencia de sentido en cualquier arquitectura que se desarrolle plenamente y, especialmente, en la arquitectura de la modernidad -y aún de la modernidad tardía o postmodernidad- muchas de las veces no explicitado como tal frente al sobredimensionamiento técnico que ha venido marcando la pauta desde la revolución industrial. Al mismo tiempo, ya no se puede hablar de un único sentido, universalizable, sino de una pluralidad de sentidos que definirán distintas arquitecturas. Partiendo de la petitio principii de que el tema capital de la arquitectura en la modernidad ha sido la vivienda, el objeto arquitectónico que reúne las mejores características para desarrollar esta búsqueda de sentido lo hemos encontrado en la cabaña moderna, donde se cumple el aforismo corbusierano que señala que “quand l’économie est au maximum, l’intensité est au maximum”. Al mismo tiempo “al representar la plenitud a través de su misma negación”, la cabaña moderna se puede entender como una sublimación de la arquitectura a través de pequeños objetos donde han quedado destiladas las distintas esencias de la modernidad. Mediante el análisis de seis pequeñas construcciones situadas en archipiélagos arquitectónicos radicalmente distantes –el campamento de Ocatillo (F. Ll. Wright, 1929); la Caja (R. Erskine, 1942); el Cabanon (Le Corbusier, 1952); la casa cúpula en Carbondale (R. B. Fuller, 1960); el refugio en Oropesa (F. J. Sáenz de Oíza, c.1967-1977) y el pabellón de invitados en Kempsey (G. Murcutt, 1992)- la aparente aporía que supone la cabaña moderna, frente a la más lógica, en principio, cabaña primitiva, cobra sentido. Efectiva mente, el referente mítico de la cabaña primitiva, tal y como fue enunciado por Laugier, se correspondía con el estadio más primitivo de la modernidad, con sus orígenes, precisamente porque la crítica que se hacía en ella de la arquitectura se basaba en criterios exclusivamente técnicos que remitían a los orígenes constructivos de la arquitectura como fórmula para salir del entramado retórico en el que ésta se encontraba perdida. La cabaña moderna trasciende, sin embargo, aquella primitiva fase de la modernidad, de la que la cabaña de Laugier es paradigma, en la medida en que la crítica que se realiza ahora es doble, pues a la crítica de carácter técnico que encontramos en cada una de las cabañas se le añade una crítica de sentido que no se encuentra supeditada, en ninguno de los casos, a la componente técnica, tal y como sin embargo sucedía con Laugier, donde la pretendida regeneración moral de la arquitectura era consecuencia directa de su depuración técnica. En la cabaña moderna, al contrario, encontramos una pluralidad de sentidos que orientan y fuerzan el desarrollo de la techné en direcciones que llegan a ser radicalmente diferentes, construyendo unos relatos que habrán de ser, por tanto, necesariamente parciales, pero de los que la arquitectura, en cualquier caso no podrá prescindir si es que quiere seguir siendo fiel a sí misma, tal y como, efectivamente, lo comprendieron Wright, Erskine, Le Corbusier, Fuller, Sáenz de Oíza y Murcutt, cuando se esforzaron por que estas pequeñas arquitecturas que hemos visitado, tan sólo unas cabañas, fueran unas cabañas con sentido, unas cabañas modernas. ABSTRACT Since the illustrated and industrial revolution of the XVIII century it has been developing, with unequally strength through history, something that is inherent to man and that has allowed him to become himself against the rest of animals: technique. As Ortega says, there is no man without technique. But, at the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear –as Ortega also says- that the sense and the cause of the technique are beyond technique itself, and that technique is not actually the first thing, but that its purpose must be predefined by a pre-technique original desire. If it were not like this, man would lose his own sense, because man is pure desire, an entity whose being is not what already is, but what still doesn’t is. However, the progressive disenchantment of the world as the result of the development of the industrial society came to change the old myths by a rational and abstract interpretation that renounced to any search of meaning that transcended the brute facts. Thereby, the loss of sense of man against the technique developed by man himself let him aimless and converted in a passive object in the hands of a misunderstood progress. Against this loss of sense already detected at the beginning of the XX century and denounced in a stronger way since the Second World War, the postmodernism of the late decades of the last century could not only formalize its disappearance, but also consign its delegitimization. On the contrary, we maintain the necessary existence of sense in any architecture that is fully developed and, specially, in the modern architecture –and even in the late Modernism or Postmodernism- many times not made explicit as such against the technique oversizing that has been setting the pattern since the industrial revolution. At the same time, we can not talk about an only and universal sense, but about a plurality of senses that will define different architectures. On the basis of the petitio principii that dwelling has been the capital issue of modern architecture, the architectonic object that possesses the best features for developing this search of sense has been found in the modern hut, where is fulfil the Corbusieran aphorism that says that “quand l’économie est au maximum, l’intensité est au maximum”. At the same time, “representing plenitude through its own negation” the modern hut can be understood as a sublimation of architecture through small objects where the different essences of modernity have been distilled. Through the analysis of six small buildings located in radically distant architectonic archipelagos –the Ocatillo dessert camp (F. Ll. Wright, 1929); the Box (R. Erskine, 1942); the Cabanon (Le Corbusier, 1952); the dome-home in Carbondale (R. B. Fuller, 1960); the retreat in Oropesa (F. J. Sáenz de Oíza, c. 1967-1977) and the guest house in Kimpsey (G. Murcutt, 1992)- the apparent aporia that represents the modern hut, against the, initially, more logical primitive hut, makes sense. Indeed, the mythical reference of the primitive hut, as it was enunciated by Laugier, belonged to the most primitive state of modernity, with its origins, precisely because the criticism of the architecture that was made there was based in exclusively technique criteria, referring to the constructive origins of architecture as the formula to get out of the rhetoric labyrinth in which architecture was lost at the moment. However, the modern hut transcends that primitive phase of modernity, of which Laugier’s hut is paradigm, since the criticism that is made is double, because to the criticism on the technique that we find in every hut we must add a criticism on the sense that is never subordinated to the technique component, as it was the case in Laugier, where the intended architectonic moral regeneration was a direct consequence of its technical depuration. In the modern hut, on the contrary, we find a plurality of senses that guides and drives the development of techné in radically different directions, building narratives that must be, then, necessarilly partial, but of which architecture could never leave aside if it still wants to be faithful to itself, as Wright, Erskine, Le Corbusier, Fuller, Sáenz de Oíza and Murcutt seemed to understand when they tried hardly to make these small architectures that we have visited, these huts, huts full of sense, modern huts.

Disappearances, or the art of being a Mies project Angel Borrego Several years ago I had to solve the structure of Mies House of the Werkbund exhibition of 1931 as an exercise for a course named Structures Projects in the School of Architecture of Madrid. We were offered this house as an exercise because there had been some complaints about having to calculate and deal with ?bad, real, anonymous? architecture widely recognized as such, in so far as it has been widely published, that furthermore had some ideal quality to it, a quality reinforced by the fact that it was not there anymore, one could not go and see it, old and deteriorated, all images we have of it are of a shiny new object: in fact its ideal quality was even present in that it had not even been designed to be a completely real house, as nobody ever lived there and wasn?t supposed to. It was a three dimensional representation of a house, what gave it a further flair of ideality. And it was as well the representation of an idea, and we all liked that. Last but not least, it had Mies to back it up, which promised us the remote possibility of analyzing one of his works in depth, with proper tools (this was a structures course, and we had already read, or heard, something about the importance of structures in Mies?s work.) We were lured by the possibility of reconstructing, if not the pavilion, some of the ideas leading to it. Ideas that were themselves structural, like the ?perfectly regular all columnar structure?, an ideal structure. We had a sensation that we could somehow reproduce the process and thoughts of Mies leading to the solution of a particular work, investigate him in a cuasi archaeological manner, reconstruct the project, as if being able to reconstruct one work we could reconstruct the entire Mies, and placing ourselves in his position replace him, which was to know for once where we were (1). All these thoughts, passed through our minds more or less abstractly, believe it or not, before we realized that we were supposed to imagine that the roof was also supported by the walls and that the plan was lacking two columns, which was short. We could not believe that only to make the exercise more difficult, as it was admitted, the professors would mutilate a Mies work in such a way. The exercise had lost all interest to us and there were some timid protests. The surprise came when, though admitting that the supporting walls had been their idea, the professors said they had not manipulated the plan of the house at all. Some confusion followed, since that seemed quite incredible to us, even more to professors I guess. Two of us went to the library and checkout two books, one being the ?History of Modern Architecture? (the Benevolo as it was known), from where they said to have copied the plan of the house for the exercise, and another book on Mies that included the same project. The Benevolo was actually lacking the two columns, but the other book included them, making clear our point. We were able to reorient the exercise and calculate the house just as Mies had designed it. We, the students I mean, were really happy, since we had a voice in the discipline of architecture: our own discipline since we were the ones being disciplined, and we had been allowed to freely talk our way through it. I had the nice sensation that what happened was curiously and rewardingly similar to, or a kind of metaphor for, the flowing space of the free plan, that was allowed to move through the perfectly regular structure, a most disciplined structure. As Mark Wigley has noted, discipline is intimately related to prothesis. The concept of prothesis (pro-thesis) would be already architectural as ?the act of placing before?, referring to a structure that has to be placed before anything else; it is already a structure, rather than being something added that could be removed..

Esta tesis se propone indagar en las vias por las que la arquitectura española cambió en el periodo comprendido entre 1920 y 1960 y el papel que los viajes tuvieron en dicho cambio. La investigación busca demostrar que, junto a otros factores como la llegada de revistas y libros y las conferencias de arquitectos de la talla de Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mendelsohn, Neutra o Aalto, los viajes tuvieron un papel clave en el proceso de apertura de miras y que provocó que, bien a traves de lo publicado en las revistas por los “arquitectos viajeros” o por el reflejo que tuvo lo conocido fuera de nuestras fronteras en proyectos y obras concretas, un buen numero de arquitectos, que no tuvieron la posibilidad de viajar, pudieron conocer que existía una realidad muy distinta a la que los profesores en la Escuela les habían enseñado o a la que estaban acostumbrados a ver en otros arquitectos de generaciones anteriores basada, en buena medida, en la recuperación de un estilo propio nacional centrandose en los historicismos. A lo largo de la investigación trataremos de ver que efecto produjo la apertura de fronteras y que papel tuvieron los viajes en dicho proceso. También nos centraremos en comprobar hasta qué punto cambió la manera de ver la arquitectura de los protagonistas del viaje y de aquellos que recibieron la información por ellos encontrada. Veremos cómo dicha información es cuantificable, clasificable y demostrable en propuestas concretas. Será importante ver que motivó su salida, que buscaban y que encontraron así como, entre las influencias recibidas, cuales tuvieron un mayor calado: las propuestas europeas o las americanas, y dentro de las primeras, las holandesas, las alemanas o las francesas. Los objetivos que se persigue conseguir son: contribuir a un mayor conocimiento de la arquitectura entre 1920 y 1960 a través de las conexiones internacionales y el ensanchamiento de horizontes, recopilar, clasificar y analizar todo el material obtenido relacionando los viajes con las biografías de los arquitectos protagonistas, estudiar qué interesa a los arquitectos españoles cuando van fuera y porqué (será importante ver quiénes de entre los arquitectos son más abiertos a las corrientes europeas y que motivó su salida en busca de nuevos lenguajes), ordenar las reflexiones que exponen los arquitectos a la vuelta de sus viajes y ver en que propuestas y de qué forma los arquitectos plasman lo encontrado en su búsqueda en el extranjero. Para conseguir estos objetivos estructuraremos la investigación en tres bloques: En el primero de ellos nos centraremos en profundizar como era la arquitectura española a principios del siglo XX. Para poder entender mejor las transformaciones que los viajes provocaron será necesario conocer cuál era la arquitectura predominante en estos años que, como veremos, consistía en la búsqueda de un estilo nacional propio dirigiendo su mirada al pasado. También veremos cómo un grupo de arquitectos (Palacios, Flórez, Torres Balbás o Anasagasti) fueron pioneros en el deseo de mirar fuera de nuestras fronteras así como dedicaremos especial atención a cómo era la formación en la Escuela. El segundo capítulo, que abarca desde principios de los años 20 hasta la Guerra Civil, tratará de demostrar la importancia que tuvo en el proceso de permeabilidad frente a las corrientes extranjeras los viajes que los arquitectos realizaron y que, sumados a la llegada de revistas y las visitas de los principales arquitectos modernos, provocaron una primera apertura como respuesta a los historicismos predominantes. Entre los arquitectos viajeros destacaremos las figuras de Fernando García Mercadal (incidiendo en su importancia como difusor de la arquitectura moderna), Rafael Bergamín, Ramón Sánchez Arcas y Luis Lacasa. También nos detendremos en ver la importancia que tuvieron las exposiciones (con especial atención a la de Artes Decorativas de París de 1925 y la de la Deutscher Werkbund en Stuttgart en 1927) que se realizaron estos años y como llegó la información a nuestro país. El tercer y último capítulo arranca con el periodo de posguerra, una época de transición pues los viajes que se realizaron fueron escasos y en la mayoría de las ocasiones no se llevaron a cabo en busca de nuevos caminos. Veremos cómo tras la Guerra y de la mano de la dictadura se produce, de la misma forma que en la Alemania nazi, una vuelta al interés por los historicismos de principios de siglo. Para entender mejor este periodo haremos un repaso a la obra de Luis Gutiérrez Soto por ser explicativa de lo cambiante de las corrientes arquitectónicas de estos años. Tras el análisis de los sucedido en posguerra nos dedicaremos a analizar, de la misma forma que en el primer periodo, la manera en que se produjo el rechazo al estilo nacional de nuevo gracias a la llegada de libros y revistas, lo publicado por las revistas españolas, las visitas de arquitectos de prestigio así como los viajes de un grupo de arquitectos que, de manera individual, salieron al extranjero en busca de apoyo, de referencias en los que cimentar su arquitectura. De este grupo, por la importancia que los propios protagonistas dieron al hecho de viajar como complemento a su formación y por la manera en la que reflejaron lo aprendido en proyectos concretos destacamos a Francisco de Asís Cabrero, Miguel Fisac, Ramón Vázquez Molezún y Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza. De nuevo, igual que en el primer capítulo finalizaremos la investigación dedicando un apartado a las exposiciones (fundamentalmente la Interbau de Berlín de 1957) celebradas en estos años. Para finalizar estableceremos las conclusiones que nos llevarán a comprobar hasta qué punto la arquitectura española en los periodos previo y posterior a la guerra cambió y en qué medida tuvieron importancia los viajes que los arquitectos españoles realizaron al extranjero en dicho cambio… ABSTRACT This thesis aims to look at the ways which Spanish architecture changed in the period between 1920 and 1960, and the way it was effected by travelling . The research will demonstrate that, together with other factors, such as the arrival of magazines, books, conferences and architects like Le Corbusier, Gropius, Mendelsohn, Neutra or Aalto, travelling played a key role in architecture. Also, it changed the way we look at architecture. Travelling, thanks to the published journals by "travelling architects” and the influence that they had - known beyond our borders in projects and concrete works, caused the arrival of a new type of architects. Even those who were not able to travel, knew that there was a very different reality than the reality the teachers at the school had taught them. Also, the “new reality” was different from the one that they were used to seeing in other architects of earlier generations, based mainly on the recovery of a national style focused on historicism. Throughout the investigation I will try to show the effect that the opening of borders and travelling had on this process. We will also focus on checking how it changed the way we see the architecture, from the point of view of the protagonists of the travels and those who received the information . We will see how that information is quantifiable and demonstrably classifiable into concrete proposals. It will be important to see which led to their departure. They sought and found among the influences, which had a major impact: the proposed European or American, and within the first, Dutch, German or French. The objectives to be achieved are: To contribute to a better understanding of architecture between 1920 to 1960 by the international connections, and widening the horizon. To collect, classify and analyze all obtained materials related to travelling with biographies of architects protagonists. To study what the interests of the Spanish architects were when they went abroad and why ( it will be important to see who among those architects were more open to European trends and prompted their departures for new languages). To order reflections exhibited by architects around his travels and to see what proposals and how architects reflected what they found in their search abroad. To achieve these objectives we will structure this research in three areas: In the first one, we will focus on how the Spanish architecture in the early twentieth century was. To better understand the changes that travelling caused it is necessary to understand that the predominant architecture in these years was in pursuit of its own national style, directing its gaze to the past, like we shall see. We will also see how a group of architects (Palacios, Flórez, Torres Balbás or Anasagasti) pioneered by looking beyond our borders and devote special attention to how the training was in the School. The second chapter, ranging from early 20s to the Civil War, will try to demonstrate the importance that travelling had in the process of diffusion currents. That, together with the arrival of magazines and visits by leading modern architects, led to a first opening in architecture, in response to the prevailing historicism. Among the travelers we highlight architects like Fernando García Mercadal (stressing his importance as a disseminator of modern architecture), Rafael Bergamín, Ramón Sánchez Arcas and Luis Lacasa. We will also stop to see the importance of exhibitions (with special attention to the Decorative Arts in Paris in 1925 and the Deutscher Werkbund in Stuttgart in 1927) that were held over the years and how the information came to our country . The third and final chapter starts with the post war period, a time of transition for the travels, which were scarce and in most cases were not conducted on new roads. We will see that after the war and with the dictatorship, a return to interest in historicism of the century occurred, just as in Nazi Germany. For better understanding of this period we will review the work of Luis Gutiérrez Soto. His work is explanatory of the changing of architectural trends over these years. After analyzing the case in post war, we turn to analyze, in the same way as in the first period, the manner in which rejection occurred in national style again with the arrival of books and magazines. Visits by prestigious architects and group travels of architects who, individually, went abroad in search of support, references on which to base their architecture. In this group of architects, due to the importance that the protagonists gave to the act of traveling to improve their training and the way in which they reflected what they learned in practical projects, I include Francisco de Asís Cabrero, Miguel Fisac, Ramon Vazquez Molezún and Francisco Javier Saenz de Oiza. Again, as in the first chapter, we will conclude the investigation dedicating a section to the exhibitions held in these years (mainly Interbau Berlin, 1957). Finally establishing conclusions lead us to see how far the Spanish architecture in the pre- and post -war periods changed and how much the trips were important to Spanish architects who performed abroad on the change...

RESUMEN. El objeto de la tesis es encontrar y profundizar en el estudio de arquitecturas al margen de la historia de la arquitectura moderna. En concreto aquellos edifi cios en los que la experimentación con el hormigón se convierte en el tema central del proyecto. Son obras singulares, en ocasiones herméticas y enigmáticas, cuyo carácter primitivo es debido necesariamente a las propiedades del material escogido Estas arquitecturas primitivas en hormigón tienen un tratamiento elemental, tosco. El estudio parte de la premisa de que estos rasgos primitivos pueden aparecer de manera voluntaria. Este momento germinal, también presente en los inicios de cada época, no se analizará por tanto como una fase torpe y arcaica por desconocimiento de una técnica más refi nada sino, al contrario, por la clara voluntad de sus arquitectos de utilizar este material antiguo y nuevo. ABSTRACT. The purpose of the thesis is to fi nd and study examples of architecture outside the history of modern architecture, specifi cally those buildings in which experimentation with concrete becomes the focus of the project. Works are sometimes enigmatic, the primitive character is necessarily due to material properties chosen primitive concrete. These architectures have a basic treatment, primary. The study starts from the premise that these primitive features can appear voluntarily. Para este complicado proceso comparativo se ha seleccionado la calle corredor del complejo del Híbrido Enlazado o Linked Hybrid de Steven Holl, como nuevo paradigma de calle corredor contemporánea. Tel-Aviv: años 30. La situación en Europa comienza a ser insostenible y muchos arquitectos judíos huyen a Palestina donde importan y adecuan los modelos modernos, aprendidos en el viejo continente, de hacer arquitectura. La ciudad, nacida en 1909 sobre las dunas a las afueras de Jaffa, crece vertiginosamente y se convierte en un laboratorio moderno sobre el tapiz urbano planeado por Patrick Geddes en 1925. En este trabajo, los múltiples factores arquitectónicos, sociales, culturales e históricos que llevaron a Tel Aviv a convertirse en la ciudad del mundo con más concentración de arquitectura moderna se entrelazan entre sí para perfi lar una imagen global a través de recorridos no lineales de lo acontecido en Tel Aviv durante los años 30. PALABRAS CLAVE: Tel Aviv, Movimiento Moderno Tel-Aviv. 30s The situation in Europe is becoming unsustainable and many Jewish architects fl ee to Palestine where they import the modernist way of thinking and doing architecture from the old continent. The city, born in 1909 on the dunes outside Jaffa, grows rapidly and becomes a modern laboratory over the urban tapestry planned by Patrick Geddes in 1925. In this paper, multiple architectural, social, cultural and historical factors that led Tel Aviv to become the city of the world with the highest concentration of modern architecture overlap over each other to shape a global image through non-linear paths of what happened in Tel Aviv during the 30’s.
