Abstract Considerable research has been carried out on entrepreneurship in efforts to understand its incidence in order to influence and maximize its benefits. Essentially, researchers and policy makers have sought to understand the link between individuals and business creation: Why some people start businesses while others do not. The research indicates that personality traits, individual background factors and association of entrepreneurship with career choice and small business enterprises, cannot sufficiently explain entrepreneurship. It is recognized that entrepreneurship is an intentional process and based on Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior, the most defining characteristic of entrepreneurship is the intention to start a business. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine factors that influence entrepreneurial intention in high school students in Kenya. Specifically, the study aimed at determining if there were relationships between the perceptions of desirability, and feasibility of entrepreneurship with entrepreneurial intention of the students, identifying any difference in these perceptions with students of different backgrounds, and developing a model to predict entrepreneurship in the students. The study, therefore, tested how well Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior applied in the Kenyan situation. A questionnaire was developed and administered to 969 final year high school students at a critical important point in their career decision making. Participants were selected using a combined convenience and random sampling technique, considering gender, rural/urban location, cost, and accessibility. Survey was the major method of data collection. Data analysis methods included descriptive statistics, correlation, ANOVA, factor analysis, effect size, and regression analysis. iii The findings of this study corroborate results from past studies. Attitudes are found to influence intention, and the attitudes to be moderated by individual background factors. Perceived personal desirability of entrepreneurship was found to have the greatest influence on entrepreneurial intention and perceived feasibility the lowest. The study findings also showed that perceived social desirability and feasibility of entrepreneurship contributed to perception of personal desirability, and that the background factors, including gender and prior experience, influenced entrepreneurial intention both directly and indirectly. In addition, based on the literature reviewed, the study finds that entrepreneurship promotion requires reduction of the high small business mortality rate and creation of both entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial opportunities (Kruger, 2000; Shane & Venkataraman, 2000). These findings have theoretical and practical implications for researchers, policy makers, teachers, and other entrepreneurship practitioners in Kenya.

The principalship has changed significantly over the past 20 years. Today’s principals must be effective instructional leaders, managers of large facilities, and experts at analyzing data to successfully meet the accountability demands of high-stakes testing, along with state, and federal mandates. The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to examine how 43 first- and second-year sitting school principals perceived their mentoring experiences and the degree to which a principal mentoring program—offered by their large urban school district—was effective in building their leadership capacity. A second purpose of this inquiry was to understand these principals’ perceptions of the most beneficial aspects of the mentoring program. The study used quantitative data gathered via an online questionnaire distributed during Fall 2015. The results indicated that respondents perceived that the components of the large urban school-mentoring program were generally effective in training principal mentees to become highly-effective school leaders. This study enriches the literature on mentoring by providing the voices of first and second year school leaders to add depth to the characteristics of successful mentoring programs.

There is evidence that students benefit from teachers’ explicit fostering of metacognitive strategy knowledge (MSK). However, there is insufficient understanding about the effect of implicit promotion of MSK in regular school instruction. This study investigates the relationship between perceived characteristics of learning environments (social climate, support, autonomy, self-reflection) and students’ MSK. A representative cohort of students (Nt1 = 1,272/Nt2 = 1,126) in Grades 10 and 11 at schools at the upper secondary education level (ISCED Level 3A) in Switzerland participated in this two-wave longitudinal study. Multilevel analysis showed effects on both the individual and the class level. Students who experienced higher social integration showed a higher extent of MSK at the beginning of the school year than students who experienced less social integration. Perceived autonomy was also positively related to students’ MSK on the individual level. In contrast, the results showed a negative relationship between perceived self-reflection and students’ MSK. On the class level, there was a negative relationship between self-reflection and students’ MSK. Teachers’ support did not correlate with students’ MSK on either the individual or the class level. Implications of these results for education and further studies are discussed. (DIPF/Orig.)

A sixty-nine year old man suffered a stroke fourteen weeks after the onset of right herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). Hemispheric infarction was documented by a computed tomography which showed a small hypodense zone in the right internal capsula; after contrast there was enhancement of this hypodense area. Cerebral angiography and cerebral-spinal fluid were not done. Despite of a diagnosis of probability the authors report the case and review the literature. A long latency between the HZO and onset of neurological deficit is stressed. New antiviral agents may prevent the ictus.

INTRODUÇÃO: É reconhecida a efetividade de um treinamento para melhorar a qualidade no relato do consumo alimentar em adultos, porém poucos estudos avaliam esta efetividade em crianças. OBJETIVO: Investigar o efeito da realização de um treinamento para o desenvolvimento de habilidades para um correto preenchimento de um Diário Alimentar, por escolares de 7 a 10 anos. METODOLOGIA: O estudo foi conduzido em uma escola pública da cidade de São Paulo e envolveu a realização de 3 sessões de treinamento de 30 minutos cada, direcionadas a 40 escolares de ambos os sexos. Para verificação do efeito do treinamento, 3 examinadores avaliaram o preenchimento dos dados antes e após o mesmo. Foram atribuídos escores de 0 a 5 para aspectos relativos à identificação, detalhamento e quantificação do alimento consumido, e calculado o escore médio a partir dos escores de cada examinador para cada aspecto. Utilizou-se o teste de Wilcoxon para comparação de amostras dependentes. RESULTADOS: Foi constatada evidência estatística de diferença entre os escores antes e após o treinamento para os três aspectos: identificação (p < 0,001), detalhamento (p = 0,003) e quantificação do alimento (p < 0,001), sendo grande parte dos valores após o treinamento maiores que os iniciais. CONCLUSÃO: É possível aumentar a habilidade de escolares de 7 a 10 anos no preenchimento de um Diário Alimentar a partir da realização de um treinamento nos moldes apresentados neste artigo

Witches` broom is a severe disease of Theobroma cacao L. (cacao), caused by the basidiomycete Moniliophthora perniciosa. The use of resistant cultivars is the ultimate method of control, but there are limited sources of resistance. Further, resistance from the most widely used source (`Scavina 6`) has been overcome after a few years of deployment. New sources of resistance have been intensively searched for in the Amazon basin. Here, we evaluated for witches` broom resistance, cacao accessions from various natural cacao populations originally collected in the Brazilian Amazon. Resistance of 43 families was evaluated under nursery and/or field conditions by artificial or natural infection, respectively, based on disease incidence. Screening for resistance by artificial inoculation under nursery conditions appeared to be efficient in identifying these novel resistance sources, confirmed by natural field evaluation over a nine-year period. The increase in natural field infection of `Scavina 6` was clearly demonstrated. Among the evaluated families with the least witches` broom incidence, there were accessions originally collected from distinct river basins, including the Jamari river (`CAB 0371`; `CAB 0388`; `CAB 0392`; and `CAB 0410`); Acre (`CAB 0169`); Javari (`CAB 0352`); Solimes (`CAB 0270`); and from the Purus river basin, the two most outstanding resistant accessions, `CAB 0208` and `CAB 0214`. The large genetic diversity found in cacao populations occurring at river basins from Acre and Amazonas states, Brazil, increased the chance that the selected resistant accessions would be genetically more dissimilar, and represent distinct sources of resistance to M. perniciosa from `Scavina 6`.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of tooth wear in adolescents with Class II malocclusion, compared with those with normal occlusion. Methods: The sample consisted of dental casts obtained from 310 subjects, divided into 3 groups: group 1, 110 subjects with normal occlusion (mean age, 13.51 years); group 2, 100 complete Class II Division 1 patients (mean age, 13.44 years); and group 3, 100 half-cusp Class II Division 1 patients (mean age, 13.17 years). Dental wear was assessed by using a modified version of the tooth-wear index. The 3 groups were compared by means of the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests, considering the frequency and the severity of wear on each surface of each group of teeth. The level of statistical significance was set at 5%. Results: The normal occlusion group had statistically greater tooth wear on the palatal surfaces of the maxillary central incisors and the incisal surfaces of the maxillary canines than the corresponding surfaces in both Class II malocclusion groups. The complete and half-cusp Class II Division 1 malocclusion groups had statistically greater tooth wear on the occlusal surfaces of the maxillary second premolar and first molar, the occlusal surfaces of the mandibular premolars, and the buccal surfaces of the mandibular posterior teeth compared with the normal occlusion group. The half-cusp Class II Division 1 malocclusion group had significantly greater tooth wear on the incisal surfaces of the mandibular incisors compared with the complete Class II Division 1 malocclusion group. Conclusions: Subjects with normal occlusion and complete or half-cusp Class II Division 1 malocclusions have different tooth-wear patterns. Tooth wear on the malocclusion subjects should not be considered pathologic but rather consequent to the different interocclusal tooth arrangement. The present case report describes the presence of a persistent dysarthria and dysphagia as a consequence of surgical intervention for a choroid plexus papilloma (CPP). WM was a nine year ten month old male who at the time of the present study was seven years post-surgery. A comprehensive perceptual and instrumental test battery was used to document the nature of the dysarthria incorporating all components of speech production including respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, and prosody. The nature of the dysphagia was evaluated through the use of videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing (VFS). Assessments confirmed the presence of a LMN dysarthria, marked by deficits in phonation, respiration, and prosody. Dysphagia assessment revealed deficits in oral preparatory, oral and pharyngeal stages of the swallow. The presence of persistent dysarthria and dysphagia in this case has a number of important implications for the management of children undergoing surgery for fourth ventricle CPPs, in particular the need for appropriate treatment, as well as counselling prior to surgery of the possible negative outcomes related to speech and swallowing. A evolução das concepções alternativas em direção ao conhecimento científico é um processo longo. Isso porque essas ideias são coerentes, universais, persistentes e consistentes (PINTÓ, et al., 1996). Vários autores têm destacado as contribuições da utilização de atividades investigativas para a evolução conceitual (AZEVEDO, 2006; CARVALHO, 2013; BORGES, 2002). Neste trabalho foi realizado um estudo sobre as contribuições dessas atividades para a evolução do conceito de velocidade. O estudo foi realizado em novembro de 2013 com alunos do primeiro ano do ensino médio que já haviam estudado o conteúdo de cinemática. A maioria deles demonstrou concepção alternativa, o que mostra que essa forma de conhecimento pode existir mesmo após a instrução formal. Foram realizadas três atividades que colocaram os alunos diante de diferentes situações com o objetivo de promover conflito cognitivo (CARVALHO, 1992). A produção escrita dos alunos foi recolhida e analisada utilizando-se como referencial a análise de conteúdo (BARDIN, 1977). As atividades investigativas realizadas mostraram ser uma boa alternativa às aulas tradicionais de laboratório e demonstraram potencial em promover evolução das concepções alternativas.

Este trabalho decorre de uma experiência de formação contínua de âmbito nacional, durante um ano letivo, relacionada com o ensino do português no 1º Ciclo no contexto do Programa Nacional de Ensino do Português (PNEP). Para se compreender o impacto da formação e do seu modelo, analisaram-se as produções escritas (do género narrativo e epistolar) dos alunos do 1º ao 4º ano de escolaridade, os resultados das Provas de Aferição de Língua Portuguesa do 4º ano, os inquéritos de avaliação dos formandos à própria formação, da competência da Comissão Nacional de Acompanhamento (CNA) e, ainda, as reflexões dos portefólios produzidos pelos formandos ao longo da formação. Em génese, pretende-se aferir de que modo esta formação interferiu nas aprendizagens e no desenvolvimento de competências dos alunos no domínio da língua materna, nomeadamente ao nível da escrita. Nessa perspetiva, são comparados dois grupos de alunos do mesmo agrupamento, do distrito de Lisboa, sendo o grupo experimental constituído pelos alunos cujos professores frequentaram a ação de formação PNEP e o grupo de controlo formado por alunos cujos professores nunca frequentaram a referida ação. Todavia, podendo o PNEP ser considerado como uma formação inovadora, porque se desenvolve em contexto, procura-se também saber como se sentiram os professores ao longo desta formação, bem como que repercussões e mais-valias obtiveram para as suas práticas pedagógicas e para a resolução real dos problemas vividos na sala de aula. Por fim, cruzando todos os dados de que se dispõe, aspira-se compreender o papel e o contributo da figura do formador no contexto PNEP, o que poderá conduzir a uma nova abordagem de formação, mais consentânea com o conceito de “mentoria”, e seus processos, do que com os pressupostos iniciais assentes numa lógica de “tutoria”. - This study originates from a one year education experience, nation wide, in the wake of the PNEP (Programa Nacional de Ensino do Português, in its maiden form) program. The aim is to understand how the model herein impacts first to fourth year primary school children’s learning and writing skills, how it influences the fourth year’s final exam results, and how it is reflected on practitioners’ (teachers undergoing the PNEP) performance evaluation inquires, and on concept development within their portfolios. In genesis, we seek to analyse whether the PNEP changed the way children attending primary school learn and master Portuguese, particularly its written expression. To do so, the study focus on two different publics, whereby an experimental group was build around a set of classes whose teachers had completed the PNEP education and training program, and a control group, set around a similar sample, but where teachers had no PNEP education or training at all. In addition, because PNEP might be considered as an advanced education model, we also wanted to disclosure how it adds to schoolteachers’ education techniques, and how it would help them solve daily ordinary problems within the classroom. Last but not the least, the study reveals that PNEP can change Portuguese standard education perspectives, changing classic tutorial methodologies towards a, more responsive, mentoring approach.

A dor lombar é um dos distúrbios músculo-esqueléticos mais comuns, verificando-se um aumento na última década em crianças. O objectivo deste estudo foi determinar a prevalência de dor lombar não específica no último mês e no último ano em crianças em idade escolar. O estudo foi do tipo observacional descritivo transversal, a amostra foi constituída por 219 alunos entre os 10 e os 16 anos. Os instrumentos usados foram um questionário para a dor lombar, fita métrica e balança. Concluiu-se que prevalência de dor lombar na população estudada é elevada. Verificamos associação entre a dor lombar e o sexo feminino.

Several studies have confirmed seasonal variation in suicide rates according to hours of sunshine. The suicide pattern was assessed in São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, at the tropic of Capricorn from 1996 to 2004. Poisson regression was employed to estimate parameters of seasonality, as well as to verify associations for each day between daylight duration and suicide. During the nine-year study period, there were 3,984 suicides (76.9% in men; median age=38.7 years old). Seasonal averages of suicides were similar, as were monthly averages. Poisson regression did not reveal any association between suicide rates and hours of sunshine (p=0.45) for both sexes. In conclusion, no seasonal pattern was observed for suicides.
