This study aims to compare the thermal performance of tiles made from recycled material (waste packaging cardboard with aluminized film) with the tiles of fiber and bitumen, fiber cement and red ceramic with the aim of verifying the suitability of tile to be used in hot and humid climate of low latitude. The samples were selected according to the availability from Natal RN market, as they are sold to the consumers. The methodology was based on studies that used experimental apparatus composed of thermal chambers heated by banks of incandescent bulbs, to analyze the thermal performance of materials. The tiles in the study were submitted to analysis of thermal performance, thermophysical properties and absorptance, using chambers of thermal performance, measuring the thermophysical properties and portable spectrometer, respectively. Comparative analysis of thermal performance between two samples of the recycled material with dimple sizes and different amounts of aluminum were made, in order to verify, if these characteristics had some interference on the thermal performance of them; the results showed no significant performance differences between the samples. The data obtained in chambers of thermal performance and confirmed by statistical analysis, showed, that the tile of recycled material have similar thermal performance to the tile of fiber cement. In addition to these tests was carried out the automatic monitoring of a building covered with tiles of recycled material, to verify its thermal performance in a real situation. The results showed that recycled shingles must be used with technical criteria similar to those used for fiber cement tiles, with regard to the heat gain into the building. Within these criteria should be taken into account local characteristics, especially in regions with hot and humid climate, and its use must be associated, according to the literature, to elements of thermal insulation and use of passive techniques such as vented attics, ceilings and right foot higher

This issue of the Bulletin reviews the main trends of trade in goods and services for the countries of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) in 2004. The strong recovery of trade in goods and the robust expansion of trade in services are highlighted, emphasizing the increase in services as a proportion of total exports for the smaller Caribbean economies, which may even exceed 80%.A detailed analysis of the performance of the tourism component, especially travel, showed that in 2004 there was a boom in cruise ship arrivals, a situation which poses a real challenge for some islands in terms of ensuring a permanent flow of tourists and making use of the main comparative advantages -sun, sea and beaches- and possible linkages with the rest of the economy such as the hotel industry, restaurants, business and entertainment centres, guided excursions, transport, yachting, and others. In some islands, the ratio of cruise passengers to inhabitants is particularly high, and can reach a significant factor of about 11 tourists for every inhabitant in the Bahamas, 8 in Aruba, 7 in Antigua and Barbuda and 5 in Dominica, and around 4 for a sample of eleven countries. One of the main challenges for a number of Caribbean islands is how to capitalize on such linkages by developing sustainable tourism that minimizes the possible adverse impacts on the environment and the everyday life of the citizens.

Nature based tourism is becoming more popular because it is perceived as a solution to the conflict between conservation and economic exploitation. Nevertheless, it is known to cause several effects. This paper reports findings whereby monitored tourism avoids triggering adverse effects for social cichlid fish species, Crenicichla lepidota. Measures used included aggression toward territorial intruders and the number of nests built in pristine reference areas for monitored and in non-monitored tourist areas. We observed suppressed aggressive behavior and suppressed nesting only in the non-monitored area. We conclude that by monitoring visits, and using techniques including avoiding stepping on the river bed, reducing the number of visitors, prohibiting fish feeding and protecting riparian vegetation, it is possible to avoid the enduring damage caused by nature tourism. The present thesis is based on the implementation of scuba diving activities in the year 2002, in the local fishing cove of Maitencillo, Fifth region, Chile. The local fishermen manage the exploitation process of a type of protected marine area called benthic resource management and exploitation area (BRMEA); for this reason, the implementation of a Management programme for scuba diving to regulate and control this activity to protect the resources in the area, their ecosystems and biodiversity, became a priority. In 2002, an Underwater Path was built, with three tracks for scuba diving practice. This thesis contextualises the development and implementation of the Management programme and the use of the Underwater Path. It also develops a methodology to calculate the payload for the Underwater Path, and to assess the Management project through biophysical, economic and governance indicators. This thesis also proposes a development model by the principle of Sustainable development, with the local community of fishermen implementing and handling the project, without the intervention of private diving agencies, generating economic and social benefits, keeping environmental impact to a minimum level, and making it sustainable and worth emulating for other fishermen organisations. The results indicate, through the biophysical data obtained, that it is possible to take managerial measures regarding the scuba diving activity, according to the state of the most exploited benthic resources, by either restricting the activity or plainly suspending it for some time. The results show that the amount of divers using the Underwater path are way below the calculated payload, which keeps the strain that scuba diving causes on these resources and marine ecosystem to the minimum. The results of the socioeconomic and governance issues indicate that this activity has generated additional profits for the fishermen working in this activity, and also new jobs. Furthermore, the syndicate has strengthened thanks to the creation of an ecotourism commission and by assigning other local fishermen with responsibilities in the organisation of the activity. The thesis confirms the hypothesis that states, “Underwater Paths can become a form of sustainable tourism in protected marine areas”

ABSTRACT One way or another the process of planning has been implied in the development of tourism, although its application has not been absolutely successful. Also the revaluation that the planning is having in different scopes, public and private, and tourism is not free from it either, but still it requires modifications in the methods and techniques to be applied to a sustainable tourism. The modifications in the methods for the planning of the sustainable tourism in the Region of Coquimbo constitute the object of this investigation. The research establishes as hypothesis: “The integration of planning methodologies with the principles of the sustainable tourism would allow to generate a model of sustainable tourist planning, that incorporates the values of the territory, the needs of the visitors, the participation of the receiving community and is applicable to the Region of Coquimbo through a territorial-methodologic frame”. From this hypothesis, the general objective is defined: To make a proposal of a territorial-methodologic frame for the sustainable tourist planning in the Region of Coquimbo. From this general objective the specific objectives related to the analysis of the concepts and theoretical approaches of the planning applied to the tourism are deduced; the study of the planning tools of the tourist development of the Region of Coquimbo; the determination of categories and structural elements and the elaboration of a territorial-methodologic frame of the planning for the development of the sustainable tourism in the Region of Coquimbo. The methodology of the investigation is of qualitative character, is related mainly to the based theory or grounded theory and to the procedural theories of the planning. Both methodologies were used in the construction of the generic model and in the elaboration of the procedural-territorial frame. The construction of the generic model assimilated with the one of the theory in grounded theory and thus, concepts from the theoretical conceptual frame were generated (conceptualization or abstraction); categories of procedural, territorial analysis were constructed and of sustainable tourism (open codification), procedural-territorial syntheses categories were elaborated and of sustainable tourism (axial codification); the relational dynamics of the procedural-territorial categories was analyzed (selective codification) and the generic model of sustainable tourism planning was established (theory), that counts with two submodels: the General Conditions submodel and the Stages of planning submodel. From the generic model the categories defined and related in dynamic way were hierarchized, according to the characteristics of the Region of Coquimbo. Together with the recommended requirements of sustainable tourism done by The National Service of Tourism (SERNATUR) were included at national, regional level and communal and the absent stages in the formulated plans of tourist development in the Region were included, to give rise to the applied procedural-territorial frame in the Region of Coquimbo. The research gives as a result a planning methodology for sustainable tourism (generic model), that when being applied to a given territorial system, as it is the Region of Coquimbo, it generates a new specific planning methodology for the sustainable tourism of this region (procedural-territorial frame). The generic model could be applicable to any territory inside or outside the Region of Coquimbo, standing out its own values, the needs of the visitors and the participation of the community generating its own procedural-territorial frames (considering the own features of the territories, the requirements of the sustainable tourism and correcting the mistakes of the previous existing planning in that particular territory).

This project, funded by the Programa Iberoaméricano de Ciencia y Tecnología para el Desarrollo (CYTED), analyses the energy service requirements in sustainable tourism and will spread knowledge about renewable energies among the ecotourism stakeholders of Latin America. The target groups are local communities in protected areas, because they are the less up to date groups and, frequently, they are living in the most fragile ecosystems, but also the most fertile in biodiversity; their living standard is very low and the ecotourism can be a successful economic resource. The regions considered are ecosystems in Latin America, which have some protection degree, and are managed by local communities. The selected countries to implement renewable energy infrastructures in ecolodges are: Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru. Also low cost telecommunications infrastructures will be installed to improve the diffusion among potential clients of the ecolodges, in order to permit direct reservation of the services.
