Two storey bilinear hysteretic structures have been studied with a view to exploring the possibility of using the dynamic vibration absorber concept in earthquake-resistant design. The response of the lower storey has been optimized for the Taft 1952, S69°E accelerogram with reference to parameters such as frequency ratio, yield strength ratio and mass ratio. The influence of viscous damping has also been examined.

In this paper a new method is presented for generating earthquake accelerograms which have pre-established response spectra. The non-stationary random nature and other salient features of the accelerograms can be taken care of by the procedure developed. The method leads to a sample spectrum which lies above the given spectrum. The generation of records to suit several spectra simultaneously can also be handled by this approach. The method is detailed first. This is followed by several numerical examples.

In this work, we present a new monolithic strategy for solving fluid-structure interaction problems involving incompressible fluids, within the context of the finite element method. This strategy, similar to the continuum dynamics, conserves certain properties, and thus provides a rational basis for the design of the time-stepping strategy; detailed proofs of the conservation of these properties are provided. The proposed algorithm works with displacement and velocity variables for the structure and fluid, respectively, and introduces no new variables to enforce velocity or traction continuity. Any existing structural dynamics algorithm can be used without change in the proposed method. Use of the exact tangent stiffness matrix ensures that the algorithm converges quadratically within each time step. An analytical solution is presented for one of the benchmark problems used in the literature, namely, the piston problem. A number of benchmark problems including problems involving free surfaces such as sloshing and the breaking dam problem are used to demonstrate the good performance of the proposed method. The problem of determining optimal power spectral density models for earthquake excitation which satisfy constraints on total average power, zero crossing rate and which produce the highest response variance in a given linear system is considered. The solution to this problem is obtained using linear programming methods. The resulting solutions are shown to display a highly deterministic structure and, therefore, fail to capture the stochastic nature of the input. A modification to the definition of critical excitation is proposed which takes into account the entropy rate as a measure of uncertainty in the earthquake loads. The resulting problem is solved using calculus of variations and also within linear programming framework. Illustrative examples on specifying seismic inputs for a nuclear power plant and a tall earth dam are considered and the resulting solutions are shown to be realistic.

We analyze the origin of de-enhancement for a number of vibrational modes in the 2(1)A(g) excited state of trans-azobenzene. We have used the time-dependent wave packet analysis of the RR intensities by including the multimode damping effects in the calculation. This avoids the use of unrealistically large values for the damping parameter. It is concluded that the de-enhancement is caused by the interference between the two uncoupled electronic states, and that the intensities observed under the so-called symmetry forbidden 2(1)A(g) <-- 1(1)A(g) transition are purely due to resonance excitation. It is also observed that the use of the time-dependent approach to study the de-enhancement effects caused by multiple electronic states on the RR intensities is not necessarily useful if one is interested in the structural dynamics.

A passive vertical hopping robot is here highly idealised as two vertically arranged masses acted on by gravity and coupled by a linear spring. The lower mass makes dead (e = 0) collisions with the rigid ground. The equations of motion can be reduced to a one dimensional map. Fixed points of the map are found in which case the robot hops incessantly. For these conservative solutions the lower mass collides with the ground with zero impact velocity. The interval of attraction for these conservative fixed points depends on system parameters.

An analysis of the pressure variation over an aerofoil with integrated Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wire is reported. A computational model based on finite elements and potential flow computation is proposed to obtain the deflections of the upper and the lower skins of the aerofoil subjected to aerodynamic pressure and hysteretic deformation of the SMA wire. The computational model couples a one-dimensional phenomenological constitutive model of SMA wire with the laminar incompressible aerodynamic pressure induced deformation of the aerofoil skins. The SMA wires are actuated by thermoelectric control system with auxiliary compensator feeding the piezoelectric stack actuators to adjust the hysteretic dynamics of the SMA wire. At each step of this coupled deformation process, the deflected/morphed shape of the aerofoil is d while recalculating to get the pressure distribution. Panel method based on incompressible and inviscid flow is employed for this purpose. The aerodynamic lift is then obtained from the pressure distributions. Numerical results on the variation of coefficient of pressure are reported.
