Mineralogical and H, O, Sr, and Nd isotope compositions have been analyzed on a set of representative samples from the 17-m.y. section in ODP Leg 116 Holes 717C and 718C. Based on the mineralogical composition of the fraction <2 µm together with the lithogenic-biogenic composition of the fraction >63 µm, the whole section can be subdivided into three major periods of sedimentation. Between 17.1 and 6 m.y., and between 0.8 m.y. to present, the sediments are characterized by sandy and silty turbiditic inputs with a high proportion of minerals derived from a gneissic source without alteration. In the fraction <2 µm, illite and chlorite are dominant over smectite and kaolinite. The granulometric fraction >63 µm contains quartz, muscovite, biotite, chlorite, and feldspars. The 6-to 0.8-m.y. period is represented by an alternation of sandy/silty horizons, muds, and calcareous muds rich in smectite, and kaolinite (50% to 85% of the fraction <2 µm) and bioclastic material. The presence of smectite and kaolinite, as well as the 18O/16O and the 87Sr/86Sr ratios of the fraction <2 µm, imply an evolution in a soil environment and exchanges with meteoric ground water. The ranges of isotopic compositions are limited throughout the section: d18O quartz = 11.7 to 13.3 per mil, 87Sr/86Sr = 0.733 to 0.760 and epsilon-Nd (0) = -17.4 to -13.8. These values are within those of the High Himalaya Crystalline series, and they are considered to reflect this source region. The data imply that, since 17 Ma, this formation has supplied the major part of the eroded material.

The three sites (717, 718, and 719) drilled on the distal Bengal Fan during ODP Leg 116 cored turbidite sediments almost exclusively. Calcareous nannofossils were recovered sporadically and, although all of them probably have been redeposited, it is possible to date the sediments at all three sites with reasonable confidence. Site 717 penetrated the uppermost middle Miocene Catinaster coalitus highest occurrence datum and represents the most nearly continuous succession of turbidites. Site 718 penetrated the lower Miocene, well below the Helicosphaera ampliaperta highest occurrence datum, but this site contains a major late Pliocene to mid-Pleistocene hiatus. Site 719, the shallowest hole, penetrated only into the upper Miocene. Identification of several critical lowest occurrence datums allows using the poorly constrained but more numerous highest occurrence datums for comparison with the model succession (zonal markers) and thereby to derive a reasonably accurate time framework for the sediments.

Sediment samples collected at DSDP Leg 96 Mississippi Fan Sites 615, 616, 620, 621, and 623, Orca Basin Site 618, and Pigmy Basin Site 619 were analyzed for 22 major, minor, and trace elements. This study was undertaken to document the downhole variability in inorganic geochemistry between sites. The mineralogy of the clays, including those from Sites 614, 617, and 622 on the fan, was determined by X-ray diffraction to define the principal clay minerals present at the sites, examine any downhole trends in clay mineralogy, and aid in the interpretation of the geochemical signature of the sediments. Clay mineral composition at all the sites is smectite:illite:chlorite:kaolinite in the approximate percentage ratio 50:20:20:10. Geochemical results indicate only slight variation between and within the sites, with the exception of a discrete unit of carbonates that occurs near the bottom of Site 615. Variation in the major, minor, and trace element composition can be explained by a change in the relative abundance of quartz, clay minerals, and carbonates.

Benthic foraminifers were examined from turbiditic sequences at Sites 717, 718, and 719. Three assemblages, 1, 2, 3, were identified and are interpreted as reflecting different bathymetric environments. Based on the distribution patterns of these assemblages, six paleontological intervals (a to f) were distinguished and correlated to the lithostratigraphic units and calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy and biochronology. This relationship indicated three signals of climatic deterioration, the first in the late Pliocene (around 2.42 Ma) and two others in the Pleistocene (younger than 1.59 Ma and 0.93 Ma).

Early Miocene to Quaternary sediments drilled from the Bengal Fan are divided into six zones by modal proportions of heavy minerals. The sediments were mostly derived from the Himalayas. Detritus from the Indian subcontinent is found sporadically in clay-rich sediments that were deposited during periods of slow sedimentation, when the deep-sea channel migrated away from the drilled sites. The oldest sediments, ranging from 17 to about 15 Ma, were derived mostly from the Precambrian and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks of the lower Himalayas. At about 15 Ma, metamorphic terrains were eroded in the source area. Further large-scale unroofing of metamorphic rocks occurred around 11 Ma. After 10 Ma, the major constituents in the drainage basin or the drainage pattern changed a few times. Between 3.5 and 0.5 Ma, a large peridotite body was unroofed by uplift and successive erosion of the central Himalayas. At this time, the single large river that had supplied detritus to the early Bengal Fan was divided into the Indus and Ganges rivers.
