Aquesta tesi estudia algunes de les transformacions agràries enregistrades en un àmbit comarcal (la comarca catalana del Baix Empordà) entre mitjan segle XIX i mitjan segle XX. EI fil conductor és la distribució de la propietat del sol agrícola. Però per a la seva comprensió es considera necessari integrar moltes altres variables. EI treball també es proposa assajar alguns procediments metodològics poc habituals en l'anàlisi de la distribució de la propietat del sòl agrícola i la seva evolució en època contemporània. Com a hipòtesi central, es sosté que, al Baix Empordà i al llarg del període comprès entre 1850 i 1940, els canvis que varen produir-se en l'estructura de la propietat i, també, en I'estructura social rural, varen apuntar genèricament a favor dels grups pagesos. En particular, es sosté : ( I) Que la situació de partida (de mitjan segle XIX) ja es caracteritzava per un notable pes de la petita propietat pagesa sobre I'estructura de la propietat agrícola i sobre el conjunt del sistema agrari. (2) Que, amb posterioritat a la crisi agrària finisecular, els problemes de rendibilitat de la producció agrària i l'erosió soferta per alguns mecanismes d'extracció de renda varen tendir a allunyar els sectors rendistes que tradicionalment havien exercit la seva hegemonia -econòmica i social- en la societat rural. (3) I, finalment, que al llarg del període va produir-se un avenç de la propietat pagesa com a conseqüència del fet que una porció significativa de famílies pageses aconseguissin ampliar el seu patrimoni territorial a través de compres realitzades en el mercat de terres, alhora que un nombre significatiu de vells grans patrimonis es fraccionava i desfeia. La magnitud d'aquests canvis va ser moderada i no va pas estar exempta d'ambigüitats, però posa de relleu la capacitat de resistència i adequació de l'explotació pagesa a les condicions d'un capitalisme evolvent, malgrat els pronòstics en sentit contrari de molts teòrics. La tesi està articulada en dues parts. En la primera es duu a terme una descripció detallada de les característiques del sistema agrari baixempordanès de mitjan segle XIX amb l'objectiu final de determinar el significat econòmic de les terres posseïdes per cada patrimoni familiar (més enllà de la simple consideració de les superfícies). EI primer pas consisteix en l'anàlisi dels usos del sòl, dels conreus principals i la seva ordenació en rotacions, dels rendiments físics, de les practiques de reposició de la fertilitat i de la dotació ramadera. A continuació es descriuen les tècniques i el procés de treball agrari amb l'objectiu de formular un model d'organització del treball agrícola que permeti mesurar les exigències en treball d'aquesta activitat. Es conclou que, des de la perspectiva de l'ocupació i de la demanda de treball generades pel sistema agrari, les localitats rurals es caracteritzaven per un fort excedent de mà d'obra en relació a les demandes laborals dels conreus tant des d'una perspectiva macroeconòmica com microeconòmica. EI tercer capítol es centra en l'avaluació de les necessitats de consum i reproducció de les UFP. Les estimacions realitzades permeten proposar un model flexible, que és contrastat amb els ingressos potencialment obtenibles per cada patrimoni. S'arriba a la conclusió que només una ínfima part de la població arribava a obtenir, amb l'explotació directa del seu patrimoni, l'ingrés necessari per a la seva reproducció econòmica simple. Paral·lelament però, es posa de relleu la importància econòmica i social dels petits patrimonis pagesos. S'estima que entorn una mitjana del 45% del sòl agrícola estava posseït per aquest segment de propietaris i, en el quart capítol, s'estudien les implicacions d'aquest fet. EI retrat de la situació de partida finalitza amb l'estudi dels règims de no-propietat predominants a la comarca. En la segona part, aquesta visió estàtica deixa pas a una anàlisi dinàmica. A mitjan segle XIX, al Baix Empordà, s'estava arribant a la fi d'una llarga etapa expansiva iniciada una centúria abans. Els primers signes d'esgotament varen ser la intensa pèrdua de població rural entre 1860 i 1880, la paralització de l'expansió dels conreus i el fort desenvolupament de la industria surera, eix del nou motor econòmic comarcal. Amb posterioritat a 1860 els canvis en l'estructura distributiva de la propietat varen tendir a apuntar cap a la consolidació de la propietat pagesa. Es va produir un procés de transferència de terres des dels sectors rendistes cap a sectors pagesos que va realitzar-se a través de compravendes en el mercat de la terra més que a través d'establiments i subestabliments emfitèutics. Va tenir com a conseqüència última el retrocés dels vells patrimonis rendistes, que, en general, no varen ser substituïts per l'aparició de nous grans patrimonis, com havia pogut passar fins aleshores. Paral·lelament, un bon nombre d'unitats familiars rurals també varen anar abandonant el camp i les seves propietats, produint-se una altra línia de transferència de terres entre sectors pagesos. La depreciació sostinguda dels preus agrícoles, la caiguda de la renda agrària, la superior rendibilitat de les inversions en valors mobiliaris i la incidència d'una creixent conflictivitat agrària són els factors que es destaquen per explicar la reculada dels grans patrimonis territorials. Des de la perspectiva pagesa es proposen tres elements explicatius per interpretar el procés d'acumulació patrimonial observat en un determinat segment de població: (1) el manteniment d'estratègies de producció per a l'autoconsum (un aspecte sempre polèmic i de difícil demostració); (2) l'existència d'un flux important d'ingressos salarials i extra-agrícoles en la composició de l'ingrés familiar pagès; i (3) el canvi en les orientacions tècniques i productives de les explotacions pageses. La combinació dels tres, alhora que hauria limitat els efectes directes dels moviments dels preus agraris, hauria possibilitat l'estratègia acumulativa observada.

The PhD process is uncertain, idiosyncratic and vague. Research into the management of PhDs has proved very useful for supervisors and students. It is important for everyone involved in the process to be aware of what can be done to improve the likelihood of success for PhD studies. There are many ways of tackling a PhD and it is not possible to describe construction management as a generic type of study. Rather, construction management is a source of problems and data, whereas solutions and approaches need to be based within established academic disciplines. The clear definition of a research project is an essential prerequisite for success. Although PhDs are difficult, there are many things that can be done by departments, supervisors and students to ease the difficulties. In the long run, the development of an active and dynamic research community is dependent upon a steady flow of high quality PhDs. No-one benefits from an uncompleted or failed PhD.

An important test of the quality of a computational model is its ability to reproduce standard test cases or benchmarks. For steady open–channel flow based on the Saint Venant equations some benchmarks exist for simple geometries from the work of Bresse, Bakhmeteff and Chow but these are tabulated in the form of standard integrals. This paper provides benchmark solutions for a wider range of cases, which may have a nonprismatic cross section, nonuniform bed slope, and transitions between subcritical and supercritical flow. This makes it possible to assess the underlying quality of computational algorithms in more difficult cases, including those with hydraulic jumps. Several new test cases are given in detail and the performance of a commercial steady flow package is evaluated against two of them. The test cases may also be used as benchmarks for both steady flow models and unsteady flow models in the steady limit.

Rheology of milk foams generated by steam injection was studied during the transient destabilization process using steady flow and dynamic oscillatory techniques: yield stress (τ_y) values were obtained from a stress ramp (0.2 to 25 Pa) and from strain amplitude sweep (0.001 to 3 at 1 Hz of frequency); elastic (G') and viscous (G") moduli were measured by frequency sweep (0.1 to 150 Hz at 0.05 of strain); and the apparent viscosity (η_a) was obtained from the flow curves generated from the stress ramp. The effect of plate roughness and the sweep time on τ_y was also assessed. Yield stress was found to increase with plate roughness whereas it decreased with the sweep time. The values of yield stress and moduli—G' and G"—increased during foam destabilization as a consequence of the changes in foam properties, especially the gas volume fraction, φ, and bubble size, R_32 (Sauter mean bubble radius). Thus, a relationship between τ_y, φ, R_32, and σ (surface tension) was established. The changes in the apparent viscosity, η, showed that the foams behaved like a shear thinning fluid beyond the yield point, fitting the modified Cross model with the relaxation time parameter (λ) also depending on the gas volume fraction. Overall, it was concluded that the viscoelastic behavior of the foam below the yield point and liquid-like behavior thereafter both vary during destabilization due to changes in the foam characteristics.

Exact, finite-amplitude, local wave-activity conservation laws are derived for disturbances to steady flows in the context of the two-dimensional anelastic equations. The conservation laws are expressed entirely in terms of Eulerian quantities, and have the property that, in the limit of a small-amplitude, slowly varying, monochromatic wave train, the wave-activity density A and flux F, when averaged over phase, satisfy F = cgA where cg is the group velocity of the waves. For nonparallel steady flows, the only conserved wave activity is a form of disturbance pseudoenergy; when the steady flow is parallel, there is in addition a conservation law for the disturbance pseudomomentum. The above results are obtained not only for isentropic background states (which give the so-called “deep form” of the anelastic equations), but also for arbitrary background potential-temperature profiles θ0(z) so long as the variation in θ0(z) over the depth of the fluid is small compared with θ0 itself. The Hamiltonian structure of the equations is established in both cases, and its symmetry properties discussed. An expression for available potential energy is also derived that, for the case of a stably stratified background state (i.e., dθ0/dz > 0), is locally positive definite; the expression is valid for fully three-dimensional flow. The counterparts to results for the two-dimensional Boussinesq equations are also noted.

The Assyrian capitals are not only known for their magnificent temples and palaces, but also for their monumental city walls. The most impressive and at the same time most delicate features of all the town defenses were the city gates. As they interrupted the line of defense, they were al-ways a vulnerable spot of every system of fortifications. However, the walled cities’ economic needs demanded these gateways to be built, in order to ensure the steady flow of goods and pro-visions. Apart from that, they also had a significant ideological meaning, which is emphasized by many cuneiform texts. During the excavations of the Assyrian capitals of Ashur, Dūr Šarrūkīn, and Nineveh, a fairly large number of Assyrian city gates were brought to light. By re-examining the archaeological reports and employing remote sensing, many details of these structures can still be revealed. The paper aims at illuminating the different considerations that went into constructing these gates, as well as the development Assyrian city gates underwent and what may have influenced this process.

The group vaporization of a monodisperse fuel-spray jet discharging into a hot coflowing gaseous stream is investigated for steady flow by numerical and asymptotic methods with a two-continua formulation used for the description of the gas and liquid phases. The jet is assumed to be slender and laminar, as occurs when the Reynolds number is moderately large, so that the boundary-layer form of the conservation equations can be employed in the analysis. Two dimensionless parameters are found to control the flow structure, namely the spray dilution parameter 1, defined as the mass of liquid fuel per unit mass of gas in the spray stream, and the group vaporization parameter e, defined as the ratio of the characteristic time of spray evolution due to droplet vaporization to the characteristic diffusion time across the jet. It is observed that, for the small values of e often encountered in applications, vaporization occurs only in a thin layer separating the spray from the outer droplet-free stream. This regime of sheath vaporization, which is controlled by heat conduction, is amenable to a simplified asymptotic description, independent of ε,in which the location of the vaporization layer is determined numerically as a free boundary in a parabolic problem involving matching of the separate solutions in the external streams, with appropriate jump conditions obtained from analysis of the quasi-steady vaporization front. Separate consideration of dilute and dense sprays, corresponding, respectively, to the asymptotic limits λ<<1 and λ>>1, enables simplified descriptions to be obtained for the different flow variables, including explicit analytic expressions for the spray penetration distance.

A mathematical model of the process employed by a sonic anemometer to build up the measured wind vector in a steady flow is presented to illustrate the way the geometry of these sensors as well as the characteristics of aerodynamic disturbance on the acoustic path can lead to singularities in the transformation function that relates the measured (disturbed) wind vector with the real (corrected) wind vector, impeding the application of correction/calibration functions for some wind conditions. An implicit function theorem allows for the identification of those combinations of real wind conditions and design parameters that lead to undefined correction/ calibration functions. In general, orthogonal path sensors do not show problematic combination of parameters. However, some geometric sonic sensor designs, available in the market, with paths forming smaller angles could lead to undefined correction functions for some levels of aerodynamic disturbances and for certain wind directions. The parameters studied have a strong influence on the existence and number of singularities in the correction/ calibration function as well as on the number of singularities for some combination of parameters. Some conclusions concerning good design practices are included.

O trabalho aborda a aplicação da técnica de reconciliação de dados para o balanço da movimentação de gás natural em uma malha de escoamento de gás não processado, elaborando também um método de cálculo rápido de inventário de um duto. Foram aplicadas, separadamente, a reconciliação volumétrica à condição padrão de medição e a reconciliação mássica, bem como realizadas comparações dos resultados em relação ao balanço original e verificação do balanço resultante de energia em termos de poder calorífico superior. Dois conjuntos de pesos foram aplicados, um arbitrado de acordo com o conhecimento prévio da qualidade do sistema de medição de cada um dos pontos, outro baseado no inverso da variância dos volumes diários apurados no período. Ambos apresentaram bons resultados e o segundo foi considerado o mais apropriado. Por meio de uma abordagem termodinâmica, foi avaliado o potencial impacto, ao balanço, da condensação de parte da fase gás ao longo do escoamento e a injeção de um condensado de gás natural não estabilizado por uma das fontes. Ambos tendem a impactar o balanço, sendo o resultado esperado um menor volume, massa e energia de fase gás na saída. Outros fatores de considerável impacto na qualidade dos dados e no resultado final da reconciliação são a qualidade da medição de saída do sistema e a representatividade da composição do gás neste ponto. O inventário é calculado a partir de uma regressão que se baseia em um regime permanente de escoamento, o que pode apresentar maior desvio quando fortes transientes estão ocorrendo no último dia do mês, porém a variação de inventário ao longo do mês possui baixo impacto no balanço. Concluiu-se que a reconciliação volumétrica é a mais apropriada para este sistema, pois os dados reconciliados levam os balanços mássicos e de energia em termos de poder calorífico, ambos na fase gás, para dentro do perfil esperado de comportamento. Embora um balanço volumétrico nulo apenas da fase gás não seja por si só o comportamento esperado quando se considera os efeitos descritos, para desenvolver um balanço mais robusto é necessário considerar as frações líquidas presentes no sistema, agregando maior dificuldade na aquisição e qualidade dos dados.

We investigate the gas-particle dynamics of a device designed for biological pre-clinical experiments. The device uses transonic/supersonic gas flow to accelerate microparticles such that they penetrate the outer skin layers. By using a shock tube coupled to a correctly expanded nozzle, a quasi-one-dimensional, quasi-steady flow (QSF) is produced to uniformly accelerate the microparticles. The system utilises a microparticle cassette (a diaphragm sealed container) that incorporates a jet mixing mechanism to stir the particles prior to diaphragm rupture. Pressure measurements reveal that a QSF exit period - suitable for uniformly accelerating microparticles - exists between 155 and 220 mus after diaphragm rupture. Immediately preceding the QSF period, a starting process secondary shock was shown to form with its (x,t) trajectory comparing well to theoretical estimates. To characterise the microparticle, flow particle image velocimetry experiments were conducted at the nozzle exit, using particle payloads with varying diameter (2.7-48 mu m), density (600-16,800 kg/m(3)) and mass (0.25-10 mg). The resultant microparticle velocities were temporally uniform. The experiments also show that the starting process does not significantly influence the microparticle nozzle exit velocities. The available literature has been surveyed to determine the parameters affecting fuelling requirements of spark ignition engines and their relation to engine performance and emissions. Theories and experiment relating to two phase and multi-component flows have also been examined and the techniques employed in the measurement of droplet sizes and liquid wall films have been reviewed. Following preliminary steady flow visualisation experiments to examine the trajectories of droplets discharging from the valve port an extensive practical investigation of the spectrum of droplet sizes formed by the break up of the wall film has produced results which have been correlated in terms of the important fuel and airflow parameters. It is concluded that the Sauter mean diameter of droplets formed by the break up of the wall film will vary between 70 and 150 m, depending on the operating conditions of the engine. The spectra of droplet sizes measured show that a significant proportion of the total mass of the wall film breaks into drops which will be too large to burn completely and, by comparison with measurements of unburned hydrocarbon emissions from engines supplied with a homogeneous mixture of air and gaseous hydrocarbons, it is concluded that the droplets from the wall film are likely to increase emissions by 50%.
