This research measured particle and gaseous emissions from ships and trains operating within the Port of Brisbane, and explored their influence on ambient air composition at a downwind suburban measurement site. The ship and train emission factor investigations resulted in the development of novel measurement techniques which permit the quantification of particle and gaseous emission factors using samples collected from post-emission exhaust plumes. The urban influence investigation phase of the project produced a new approach to identifying influences from ship emissions.

As of now, there is little evidence on the questions of whether pro bono services are effective, whether lawyer charity is a cheaper way to provide them (because it does cost money to do pro bono), or whether it would in fact be more efficient and effective if firms and attorneys stopped giving their time and instead donated money to the organizations already specializing in these clients and causes. Pro bono may or may not be an efficient way of doing socially important work; at this point, we simply do not know

100 year old gasoline engine technology vehicles have now become one of the major contributors of greenhouse gases. Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) have been proposed to achieve environmental friendly transportation. Even though the PEV usage is currently increasing, a technology breakthrough would be required to overcome battery related drawbacks. Although battery technology is evolving, drawbacks inherited with batteries such as; cost, size, weight, slower charging characteristic and low energy density would still be dominating constrains for development of EVs. Furthermore, PEVs have not been accepted as preferred choice by many consumers due to charging related issues. To address battery related limitations, the concept of dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) enabled EVs have been proposed in which EV is being charged while it is in motion. WPT enabled infrastructure has to be employed to achieve dynamic EV charging concept. The weight of the battery pack can be reduced as the required energy storage is lower if the vehicle can be powered wirelessly while driving. Stationary WPT charging where EV is charged wirelessly when it is stopped, is simpler than dynamic WPT in terms of design complexity. However, stationary WPT does not increase vehicle range compared to wired-PEVs. State-of-art WPT technology for future transportation is discussed in this chapter. Analysis of the WPT system and its performance indices are introduced. Modelling the WPT system using different methods such as equivalent circuit theory, two port network theory and coupled mode theory is described illustrating their own merits in Sect. 2.3. Both stationary and dynamic WPT for EV applications are illustrated in Sect. 2.4. Design challenges and optimization directions are analysed in Sect. 2.5. Adaptive tuning techniques such as adaptive impedance matching and frequency tuning are also discussed. A case study for optimizing resonator design is presented in Sect. 2.6. Achievements by the research community is introduced highlighting directions for future research.

Measurements were made of the intake of a WHO/UNICEF glucose-based and a rice cereal-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) by children with diarrhoea. Twenty children who presented to the Children's Outpatient Department at Port Moresby General Hospital with acute diarrhoea and mild dehydration were randomly assigned to an ORS and measurements were taken over the following 3 hours. For data analysis, the patients were paired by weight. Testing the means of the paired samples by t test showed that there was no significant difference between the amount of rice ORS and the amount of glucose ORS taken over 3 hours. The discovery of oral rehydration solution (ORS) for the treatment of diarrheal disease has been heralded as the most important medical discovery of the century. Cereal-based ORS is able to decrease stool output and the duration of diarrheal illness more than the standard glucose-based ORS, through the increased absorption provided by oligosaccharides without the imposition of a greater osmotic penalty. Moreover, the peptides in cereals enhance amino acid and water absorption, while providing nutritional benefits. UNICEF's glucose-based ORS is becoming more widely used in Papua New Guinea (PNG). 20 children aged 6-37 months (mean age, 15 months) who presented to the Children's Outpatient Department at Port Moresby General Hospital during September-October 1993 with acute diarrhea and mild dehydration were randomly assigned to receive either a rice-based ORS or standard glucose ORS, and measurements were taken over the following 3 hours. The patients were paired by weight for analysis. No statistically significant difference was found between the amount of rice ORS and the amount of glucose ORS taken over 3 hours.

The guardians of children brought to the Port Moresby General Hospital's Children's Outpatient Department with a chief complaint of diarrhoeal disease were questioned regarding their preference of glucose-based vs rice-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) in order to determine the acceptability of a rice-based ORS. Of the 93 guardians interviewed, greater than 60% preferred the glucose-based solution in its mixability, appearance and taste, and 65% initially reported that their children preferred the taste of the glucose solution. However, after a 30-minute trial, only 58% of children still preferred the glucose solution. In a country where diarrhoeal disease is a leading cause of child death and guardians are the primary health care providers, the acceptability of an ORS is critical to the morbidity and mortality of Papua New Guinea's children. Killing an estimated 2.9 million children annually, diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of child mortality worldwide. Diarrheal disease is also the second leading cause of child mortality in Papua New Guinea (PNG), killing an average 193 inpatient children per year over the period 1984-90. However, despite the high level of diarrhea-related mortality and the proven efficacy of oral rehydration therapy (ORT) in managing diarrhea-related dehydration, standardized ORT has been underutilized in PNG. The current glucose-based oral rehydration solution (ORS) does not reduce the frequency or volume of a child's diarrhea, the most immediate concern of caregivers during episodes of illness. Cereal-based ORS, made from cereals which are commonly available as food staples in most countries, better address the short-term concerns of caregivers while offering a superior nutritional profile. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on perehtyä Malesian ja Singaporen kiinalaisten etniseen ja kansalliseen identiteettiin. Tutkimus tarkastelee ja vertailee erityisesti Malesian ja Singaporen valtionhallintojen keinoja rakentaa kansallista yhtenäisyyttä ja vähentää etnisen identiteetin merkitystä. Lisäksi tutkimus luo kriteerijoukon, jonka avulla voidaan vertailla Malesian ja Singaporen yhteiskuntien onnistumista tai epäonnistumista kansallisen yhtenäisyyden rakentamisessa. Tutkimustehtävä jakautuu kahteen kysymykseen: Miten Malesian ja Singaporen valtionhallinnon menetelmät vaikuttavat etnisten kiinalaisten kansalliseen ja etniseen identiteettiin, ja miten maiden menetelmät eroavat toisistaan? Lopuksi vertailemalla Malesiaa ja Singaporea tutkimuksessa päätellään luodun kriteerijoukon avulla, miten kansallinen yhtenäisyys on toteutunut näissä kahdessa maassa. Tutkimuksen teoriatausta perustuu etnistä ja kansallista identiteettiä tutkineiden Fredrik Barthin, Nathan Glazerin ja Daniel P. Moynihanin, Donald Horowitzin, Milton J. Esmanin, Benedict Andersonin, Anthony D. Smithin ja Stuart Hallin teorioihin. Nämä tutkijat painottavat eri tekijöiden merkitystä kansalliselle identiteetille ja yhtenäisyydelle, toisiaan täydentäen. Kyseessä on teoreettinen tutkimus. Siksi sen aineisto koostuu pääasiassa sekundaarilähteistä: tieteellisistä teoksista ja artikkeleista sekä sähköisistä lehtiartikkeleista. Primäärilähteitä ovat Malesian ja Singaporen perustuslait, Malesian ja Singaporen tilastokeskuksien tilastot sekä Malesian entisen pääministerin Mahathir bin Mohamadin vuonna 1991 pitämä Vision 2020 -puhe. Aineistoa on analysoitu tutkimuksen teoriataustan avulla. Monipuolisemman kuvan muodostamiseksi on tutkimukseen valittu sekä länsimaalaisten tutkijoiden että singaporelaisten ja malesialaisten tutkijoiden tutkimuksia. Lisäksi, puolueellisuuden välttämiseksi, on tutkimukseen valittu eri etnisiin ryhmiin kuuluvien tutkijoiden artikkeleita ja teoksia. Tutkimuksessa on päädytty seuraavan tulokseen. Jotta kansallinen yhtenäisyys voidaan saavuttaa Malesian ja Singaporen monietnisissä yhteiskunnissa, tulee valtionhallinnon keskittyä erityisesti seuraaviin viiteen tehtävään: kansantalouden kehittämiseen, etnisten ryhmien välisen taloudellisen tasa-arvoisuuden edistämiseen, poliittisen aktiivisuuden ja osallistumisen kannustamiseen, etnisten yhteisöjen samanarvoisuuden toteuttamiseen lain edessä ja tasa-arvoisen koulutusjärjestelmän rakentamiseen. Näiden kriteerien perusteella Malesia ja Singapore eivät ole kansallisesti yhtenäisiä valtioita. Singapore on kuitenkin kansallisesti yhtenäisempi, sillä se täyttää viidestä kriteeristä kolme, kun Malesia täyttää vain kaksi kriteeriä. Malesialla ja Singaporella on kaksi hyvin erilaista tapaa rakentaa kansallista yhtenäisyyttä, mutta lopputulokset ovat kuitenkin hyvin samankaltaiset. Tutkimus päättelee, että etnisten yhteisöjen institutionaalinen asema molemmissa maissa on yksi ratkaisevimmista esteistä kansalliselle yhtenäisyydelle.

We used an established seagrass monitoring programme to examine the short and longer-term impacts of an oil spill event on intertidal seagrass meadows. Results for potentially impacted seagrass areas were compared with existing monitoring data and with control seagrass meadows located outside of the oil spill area. Seagrass meadows were not significantly affected by the oil spill. Declines in seagrass biomass and area 1 month post-spill were consistent between control and impact meadows. Eight months post-spill, seagrass density and area increased to be within historical ranges. The declines in seagrass meadows were likely attributable to natural seasonal variation and a combination of climatic and anthropogenic impacts. The lack of impact from the oil spill was due to several mitigating factors rather than a lack of toxic effects to seagrasses. The study demonstrates the value of long-term monitoring of critical habitats in high risk areas to effectively assess impacts.
