We show that bright-dark vector solitons are possible in biased photorefractive-photovoltaic crystals under steady-state conditions, which result from both the bulk photovoltaic effect and the spatially nonuniform screening of the external bias field. The analytical solutions of these vector solitons can be obtained in the case of \sigma\ much less than 1, where sigma is the parameter controlling the intensities of the two optical beams. In the limit of -1 < sigma much less than 1, these vector solitons can also be determined by use of simple numerical integration procedures. When the bulk photovoltaic effect is neglectable, these vector solitons are bright-dark vector screening solitons studied previously in the \sigma\ much less than 1 regime, and predict bright-dark vector screening solitons in the -1 < sigma less than or equal to 1 regime. When the external bias field is absent, these vector solitons predict bright-dark vector photovoltaic solitons in closed and open circuits. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

L-shell X-ray spectra of Mo surface induced by Xe25+ and Xe29+ were measured. The X-ray intensity was obtained in the kinetic energy range of the incident ions from 350 to 600 keV. The relationship of X-ray intensity with kinetic energy of the projectile and its charge state were studied, and the simple explanation was given.

The transient state (as the defined point where no enantioseparation is obtained in a dual chiral selector system) of chiral recognition of aminoglutethimide in a binary mixture of neutral cyclodextrins (CDs) was studied by capillary electrophoresis (CE). The following three dual selector systems were used: alpha-cyclodextrin (alpha-CD) and beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(di-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (DM-beta-CD); alpha-CD and heptakis(tri-O-methyl-beta-cyclodextrin) (TM-beta-CD). The S-(-) enantiomer of the analyte was more strongly retained in the presence of either alpha-CD or TM-beta-CD at pH 2.5, 100 mM phosphate buffer, while the R-(+) enantiomer was more strongly retained in the presence of either P-CD or DM-P-CD. In the more simple case, the elution order is invariably kept if the enantiomers have the same elution order in either one of the two hosts of the binary mixture. In contrast, the elution order may be switched by varying the concentration ratio of two hosts that produce opposite elution order for this particular analyte. In such a dual selector system, the enantioselectivity will disappear at the transient state at a certain ratio of host,:host, Moreover, the migration times of the two enantiomers with host, alone (diluted in buffer) is approximately equal to the migration times at the corresponding concentration of host, alone (diluted in buffer), where the ratio of concentrations of host,:host, is the same as in the binary mixture at the transient state. As found by nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, the analyte is forming a 1:1 complex with either one of the CDs applied. From this finding, a theoretical model based on the mobility difference of the two enantiomers was derived that was used to simulate the transient state. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. A simple preparation process of alkylamide phase for reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) is described. The process includes aminopropyltrimethoxysilane firstly reacted with octanoyl chloride, then the intermediate was coupled onto porous silica. The resultant bonded silica has a reproducible ligand surface concentration and homogenous bonded ligand distribution on the porous silica. Characterization of prepared packing was carried out with elemental analysis, solid-state C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Chromatographic evaluations were carried out by using a mixture of organic compounds including acidic, basic and neutral analytes under methanol/water as binary mobile phase. The results showed that the stationary phase have excellent chromatographic properties and can be efficiently used for the separation of basic compounds.

Strings of interconnected hollow carbon nanoparticles with porous shells were prepared by simple heat-treatments of a mixture of resorcinol-formaldehyde gel and transition-metal salts. The sample was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption. Results show that the sample consisted of relatively uniform hollow particles with sizes ranging from 70 to 80 nm forming a strings-of-pearls-like nanostructure. The material with porous shells possessed well-developed graphitic structure with an interlayer (d(002)) spacing of 0.3369 nm and the stack height of the graphite crystallites of 9 nm.

A simple novel method for preparing multiwalled carbon nanotubes/montmorillonite (MWNTs/MMT) hybrids has been established through mixing pristine MWNTs in MMT aqueous dispersion. The principle of this method is based on the formation of stable dispersion containing both MWNTs and MMT in water, which results from strong interaction between MWNTs and MMT platelets. Sedimentation experiments, measurements of potential, and Raman spectra have been used to confirm the presence of strong interaction between MWNTs and MMT sheets. The morphology observation for the dried MWNTs/MMT hybrids shows that the obtained hybrids are homogeneous, in which MWNTs exist as the state of single nanotubes that are absorbed on the surface and edge of MMT sheets.

An effective electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor based on Nafion/poly(sodium 4-styrene sulfonate) (PSS) composite film-modified ITO electrode was developed. The Nafion/PSS/Ru composite film was characterized by atomic force microscopy, UV-vis absorbance spectroscopy and electrochemical experiments. The Nafion/PSS composite film could effectively immobilize tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) via ion-exchange and electrostatic interaction. The ECL behavior of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized in Nafion/PSS composite film was investigated using tripropylamine (TPA) as an analyte. The detection limit (S/N = 3) for TPA at the Nafion/PSS/Ru composite-modified electrode was estimated to be 3.0 nM, which is 3 orders of magnitude lower than that obtained at the Nafion/Ru modified electrode. The Nafion/PSS/Ru composite film-modified indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode also exhibited good ECL stability. In addition, this kind of immobilization approach was simple, effective, and timesaving.

A series of NIR organic chromophores with donor-pi-acceptor-pi-donor structure are synthesized. Good thermal stability and strong photoluminescence in solid state render them suitable for application in light-emitting diodes. Exclusive near-infrared emission at 1080 nm with external quantum efficiency of 0.28% is obtained from the nondoped OLEDs. The longest electroluminescence wave-length is 1220 nm.

Tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) ((Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)) is one of the most extensively studied and used electrochemiluminescent (ECL) compounds owing to its superior properties, which include high sensitivity and stability under moderate conditions in aqueous solution. In this paper we present a simple method for the preparation of [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)-containing microstructures based on electrostatic assembly The formation of such micro-structures occurs in a single process by direct mixing of aqueous solutions of [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2 and K-3[Fe(CN)(6)] at room temperature. The electrostatic interactions between [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2 cations and [Fe(CN)(6)](3-) anions cause them to assemble into the resulting microstructures. Both the molar ratio and concentration of reactants were found to have strong influences on the formation of these microstructures. Most importantly, the resulting [Ru(bpy)(3)](2+)- containing microstructures exhibit excellent ECL behavior and, therefore, hold great promise for solid-state ECL detection in capillary electrophoresis (CE) or CE microchips.

A simple, large scale, and one-step process for the preparation of tris(2,2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(I) (Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) doped SiO2@carbon nanotubes (MVNTs) coaxial nanocable used for an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is presented for the first time. More importantly, a directly coated as-formed functional material on ITO electrode surface exhibits excellent ECL behavior, good stability, and high sensitivity in the presence of tripropylamine (TPA). This novel functional material will find potential applications in biosensor, electrophoresis and electroanalysis.

Bifunctional nanoarchitecture has been developed by combining the magnetic iron oxide and the luminescent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) encapsulated in silica. First, the iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized and coated with silica, which was used to isolate the magnetic nanoparticles from the outer-shell encapsulated Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) to prevent luminescence quenching. Then onto this core an outer shell of silica containing encapsulated Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) was grown through the Stober method. Highly luminescent Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) serves as a luminescent marker, while magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles allow external manipulation by a magnetic field. Since Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) is a typical electrochemiluminescence (ECL) reagent and it could still maintain such property when encapsulated in the bifunctional nanoparticle, we explored the feasibility of applying the as-prepared nanostructure to fabricating an ECL sensor; such method is simple and effective. We applied the prepared ECL sensor not only to the typical Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) co-reactant tripropylamine (TPA), but also to the practically important polyamines. Consequently, the ECL sensor shows a wide linear range, high sensitivity, and good stability.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers containing gold nanoparticles have been simply obtained by electrospinning a solution containing gold nanoparticles without the additional step of introducing other stabilizing agents. The optical property of gold nanoparticles in PVA aqueous solution was observed by UV-visible absorption spectra. Morphology of the Au/PVA nanofibers and distribution of the gold nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron. microscopy (TEM). The structure transformation was characterized from PVA to PVA/Au composite by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).

Silica coating on Gd2O3:Eu particles was obtained by a simple method, e.g. solid-state reaction at room temperature. The urea homogeneous precipitation method was used to synthesize the Gd2O3:Eu cores. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that the core particles are spherical with submicrometer size which is the soft agglomerates with nanometer crystallites. The TEM morphology of coated particles shows that a thin film is coated on the surface of Gd2O3:Eu cores. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis indicate that the coating of silica can be used to avoid agglomeration of Gd2O3:Eu particles to obtain smaller particles. X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) show that silica is coated on the surface of core particles by forming the chemical bond. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra conform that Gd2O3:Eu phosphors remain well-luminescent properties by the silica coating.

A simple thermal process for the preparation of small Pt nanoparticles is presented, carried out by heating a H-2-PtCl6/3- thiophenemalonic acid aqueous solution. The following treatment of such colloidal Pt solution with Ru( bpy)(3)(2+) causes the assembly of Pt nanoparticles into aggregates. Most importantly, directly placing such aggregates on bare solid electrode surfaces can produce very stable films exhibiting excellent electrochemiluminescence behaviors.

The facile synthesis of the novel platinum nanoparticles/Eastman AQ55D/ruthenium(II) tris( bipyridine) (PtNPs/ AQ/Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)) colloidal material for ultrasensitive ECL solid-state sensors was reported for the first time. The cation ion-exchanger AQ was used not only to immobilize ECL active species Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) but also as the dispersant of PtNPs. Colloidal characterization was accomplished by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectrum (XPS), and UV-vis spectroscopy. Directly coating the as-prepared colloid on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode produces an electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor. The electronic conductivity and electroactivity of PtNPs in composite film made the sensor exhibit faster electron transfer, higher ECL intensity of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), and a shorter equilibration time than Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) immobilized in pure AQ film. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the combination of PtNPs and permselective cation exchanger made the sensor exhibite excellent ECL behavior and stability and a very low limit of detection (1 x 10(-15) M) of tripropylamine with application prospects in bioanalysis. This method was very simple, effective, and low cost.
