The objective in this study was to determine growth, carcass characteristics, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of the longissimus dorsi of crossbred Boer x Saanen kids fed castor oil. Twenty-four kids (12 males and 12 females) were assigned in a randomized complete block design with two treatments and twelve replications. Blocks were defined according to weight, gender and initial age of animals for the evaluation of performance. The experimental treatments consisted of two diets containing 900 g concentrate/kg: a control diet (without addition of oil) and another containing castor oil at 30 g/kg (on a dry matter basis). After they reached an average body weight of 25 kg, males were slaughtered for the evaluation of carcass characteristics, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of the longissimus dorsi muscle. The addition of castor oil in the diet did not affect the intake of dry matter, crude protein and neutral detergent fiber; the average daily gain; and feed conversion, but increased the ether extract intake. No difference was observed for the carcass characteristics, chemical composition of the meat, concentration of C18:2 cis-9, trans-11 (CLA) and total concentration of saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids and their relations; however, there was increase in the concentrations of C18:2 trans-10, cis-12 (CLA) and C20:4 omega-6. The addition of castor oil to the diet of crossbred Boer x Saanen kids containing a high content of concentrate did not promote benefit to the characteristics evaluated.

Background: Parenteral lipid emulsions (LEs) can influence leukocyte functions. The authors investigated the effect of 2 LEs on leukocyte death in surgical patients with gastrointestinal cancer. Material and Methods: Twenty-five patients from a randomized, double-blind clinical trial (ID: NCT01218841) were randomly included to evaluate leukocyte death after 3 days of preoperative infusion (0.2 g fat/kg/d) of an LE composed equally of medium/long-chain triglycerides and soybean oil (MCTs/LCTs) or pure fish oil (FO). Blood samples were collected before (t0) and after LE infusion (t1) and on the third postoperative day (t2). Results: After LE infusion (t1 vs t0), MCTs/LCTs did not influence cell death; FO slightly increased the proportion of necrotic lymphocytes (5%). At the postoperative period (t2 vs t0), MCTs/LCTs tripled the proportion of apoptotic lymphocytes; FO maintained the slightly increased proportion of necrotic lymphocytes (7%) and reduced the percentage of apoptotic lymphocytes by 74%. In the postoperative period, MCT/LCT emulsion increased the proportion of apoptotic neutrophils, and FO emulsion did not change any parameter of apoptosis in the neutrophil population. There were no differences in lymphocyte or neutrophil death when MCT/LCT and FO treatments were compared during either preoperative or postoperative periods. MCT/LCTs altered the expression of 12 of 108 genes related to cell death, with both pro- and antiapoptotic effects; FO modulated the expression of 7 genes, demonstrating an antiapoptotic effect. Conclusion: In patients with gastrointestinal cancer, preoperative MCT/LCT infusion was associated with postoperative lymphocyte and neutrophil apoptosis. As the requirement for agriculture to be environmentally suitable there is a necessity to adopt indicators and methodologies approaching sustainability. In Brazil, biodiesel addition into diesel is mandatory and soybean oil is its main source. The material embodiment determines the convergence of inputs into the crop. Moreover, the material flows are necessary for any environmental analysis. This study evaluated distinct production scenarios, and also conventional versus GMO crops, through the material embodiment and energy analysis. GMO crops demanded less indirectly applied inputs. The energy balance showed linearity with yield, whereas for EROI, the increases in input and yield were not affected.

Two experiments (Exp.) were conducted to determine the AME content of refined soybean oil (SO), recycled soybean oil (RSO), and acidulated soybean oil soapstocks (ASO) and the effects of inclusion of vitamin E and vitamin C in diets containing 3.5% of these soy oils on performance and egg quality of Hy-line hens from 44 to 56 wks of age.

Biodiesel is an ecofriendly and renewable source of energy which can be used as a sustainable alternative fuel fordiesel engine. The study investigated engine performance and emission using soybean biodiesel blends with fossildiesel. The physio-chemical fuel properties of the biodiesel were determined using ASTM and EN standards. Thebiodiesel was blended in different proportions like 5% biodiesel and 95% diesel (by volume) denoted as B5, similarlyB10, B20 and B50. The biodiesel blends were tested in a multicylinder, diesel engine coupled with electromagneticdynamometer, under ISO 8178-4 test procedure. The study found that the biodiesel blends produces less brakepower, brake torque and relatively higher brake specific fuel consumption compared with diesel fuel. However, thesefules significantly reduces exhaust gases namely, CO, CO2 and HC but emits a bit more NOx compared with diesel.The reduction in emissions were different for each biodiesel blends. The study concluded that both B5 and B10blends are the optimum blends that produce more consistant and expected results compared with other blends.

Ergocalciferol is one important form of vitamin D that is needed for proper functioning of the human metabolic system. The study formulates monodisperse food grade ergocalciferol loaded oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions by microchannel emulsification (MCE). The primary characterization was performed with grooved MCE, while the storage stability and encapsulating efficiency (EE) were investigated with straight-through MCE. The grooved microchannel (MC) array plate has 5 × 18 μm MCs, while the asymmetric straight-through MC array plate consists of numerous 10 × 80 μm microslots each connected to a 10 μm diameter circular MC. Ergocalciferol at a concentration of 0.2-1.0% (w/w) was added to various oils and served as the dispersed phase, while the continuous phase constituted either of 1% (w/w) Tween 20, decaglycerol monolaurate (Sunsoft A-12) or β-lactoglobulin. The primary characterization indicated successful emulsification in the presence of 1% (w/w) Tween 20 or Sunsoft A-12. The average droplet diameter increased slowly with the increasing concentration of ergocalciferol and ranged from 28.3 to 30.0 μm with a coefficient of variation below 6.0%. Straight-through MCE was conducted with 0.5% (w/w) ergocalciferol in soybean oil together with 1% (w/w) Tween 20 in Milli-Q water as the optimum dispersed and continuous phases. Monodisperse O/W emulsions with a Sauter mean diameter (d3,2) of 34 μm with a relative span factor of less than 0.2 were successfully obtained from straight-through MCE. The resultant oil droplets were physically stable for 15 days (d) at 4 °C without any significant increase in d3,2. The monodisperse O/W emulsions exhibited an ergocalciferol EE of more than 75% during the storage period.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the emulsifying conditions and emulsifier type on production of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions encapsulating ascorbic acid derivatives by microchannel (MC) emulsification. The ascorbic acid derivatives added in a dispersed aqueous phase are calcium ascorbate (AA-Ca) and ascorbic acid 2-glucoside (AA-2G). The continuous phase used was decane, soybean oil or their mixture, containing 5% (w/w) tetraglycerin monolaurate condensed ricinoleic acid ester or sorbitan trioleate. A hydrophobized silicon MC array plate (model: MS407) with a channel depth of 7μm was used for MC emulsification. The use of MC emulsification enabled successful encapsulation of AA-Ca and AA-2G in monodisperse W/O emulsion droplets with coefficients of variation (CV) less than 7%. Their average droplet diameter (dav) increased with increasing the continuous-phase viscosity that is similar or higher than the dispersed-phase viscosity. The dav and CV of the resultant monodisperse W/O emulsions were unaffected by the dispersed-phase flow rate below critical values of 1.2-1.6mLh-1 when using decane as the continuous-phase medium.

This study sought to encapsulate a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid, up to 30% (w/v), in the inner aqueous phase of water-in-oil-water (W/O/W) emulsions with soybean oil as the oil phase. Two-step homogenization was conducted to prepare W/O/W emulsions stabilized by a hydrophobic emulsifier and 30% (v/v) of W/O droplets stabilized by a hydrophilic emulsifier. First-step homogenization prepared W/O emulsions with an average aqueous droplet diameter of 2.0 to 3.0 μm. Second-step homogenization prepared W/O/W emulsions with an average W/O droplet diameter of 14 to 18 μm and coefficients of variation (CVs) of 18% to 25%. The results indicated that stable W/O/W emulsions containing a high concentration of L-ascorbic acid were obtained by adding gelatin and magnesium sulfate in the inner aqueous phase and glucose in both aqueous phases. L-Ascorbic acid retention in the W/O/W emulsions was 40% on day 30 and followed first-order kinetics.

The present study was conducted to encapsulate higher concentration of l-ascorbic acid up to (30 g 100 mL-1) in the dispersed phase of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions. Their continuous phase contained refined soybean oil or Moringa oleifera oil and a food-grade hydrophobic emulsifier. The volume fraction of the dispersed phase was fixed as to 30%. W/O emulsions with l-ascorbic acid retention greater than 95% were prepared using rotor-stator homogenizer at 7000 rpm for 5 min. The prepared W/O emulsions under this operating conditions had average droplet diameter of 2.0-3.0 μm and coefficients of variation of 13%-22%. All the W/O emulsions were stable for more than 30 days at 4 °C or 25 °C with slight increase in average droplet diameter and without phase separation. Their l-ascorbic acid retentions were 50 g 100 g-1 at 4 °C and 30 g 100 g-1 at 25 °C after 30 days of storage. l-ascorbic acid retention ratio of the prepared W/O emulsions followed first-order kinetics with a good fit.

Experiments were performed, in a terrestrial environment, to study the migration and interaction of two drops with different diameters in matrix liquid under temperature gradient field. Pure soybean oil and silicon oil were used as matrix liquid and the drop liquid, respectively. The information on the motions of two drops was recorded by CCD camera system in the experiments to analyze the trajectories and velocities of the drops. Our experiments showed that, upon two drops approaching each other, the influence of the larger drop on the motion of the smaller one became significant. Meanwhile the smaller drop had a little influence on the larger one all the time. The oscillation of migration velocities of both drops was observed as they were approaching. For a short period the smaller drop even moved backward when it became side by side with the larger one during the migration. Although our experimental results on the behavior of two drops are basically consistent with the theoretical predictions, there are also apparent differences. 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. The experimental investigation of the thermocapillary drop migration in a vertical temperature gradient uns performed on ground. Silicon oil and pure soybean oil were used as experimental medium in drops and as continuous phases, respectively, in the present experiment. The drop migration, under the combined effects of buoyancy: and thermocapillarity, was studied for middle Reynolds numbers in order of magnitude O(10(1)). The drop migration velocities depending on drop diameters were obtained. The present experimental results show relatively small migration velocity in comparison with the one suggested by Young et nl. for linear theory of small Reynolds number. An example of flow patterns inside the drop was observed by PIV method.

Neste estudo foi investigada a alcoólise enzimática do óleo de soja com etanol, utilizando t-butanol como solvente e enzimas imobilizadas Lipozyme TL IM, Lipozyme RM IM e Novozym 435 como catalisadores. As reações foram realizadas em um reator batelada fechado acoplado a um condensador e com constante agitação. Foram avaliadas a influência do t-butanol, do tipo de enzima utilizada, da razão molar álcool/óleo e da temperatura no rendimento em biodiesel. A etanólise do óleo de soja por sucessivas adições de álcool foi investigada e as melhores condições foram obtidas em presença de t-butanol, razão molar etanol/óleo igual a 3, temperatura de 50C e 5% (m/m) de Novozym 435. Nas reações conduzidas em presença de t-butanol não foram observadas diferenças significativas entre a adição direta e a escalonada do álcool. Os efeitos da adição de álcool só foram observados na ausência de t-butanol. O rendimento máximo em ésteres etílicos atingido foi cerca de 66% após 4h de reação com Novozym 435 na presença de solvente.

Nos últimos anos, a busca por fontes de energia renováveis e o desenvolvimento de novas tecnologias para a produção de biocombustíveis têm sido objeto de intensa investigação. O biodiesel é um combustível biodegradável, derivado de fontes renováveis e é obtido em escala industrial principalmente através da reação de transesterificação de óleos vegetais e/ou gorduras animais com metanol na presença de catalisadores homogêneos, como NaOH. Entretanto, a utilização de catalisadores heterogêneos tem sido sugerida por diversos autores, por apresentar vantagens como a eliminação dos problemas de separação e purificação dos produtos obtidos. No presente trabalho foi investigada a produção de biodiesel a partir da transesterificação do óleo de soja com metanol utilizando óxidos mistos de Zn e Al como catalisadores sólidos básicos. A influência das variáveis: temperatura, concentração de catalisador e relação molar metanol/óleo de soja na produção de biodiesel foi avaliada. Os catalisadores preparados apresentaram predominantemente sítios básicos e foram ativos frente à reação estudada, sendo os resultados mais promissores apresentados pelo óxido misto com relação molar Al/(Al+Zn)=0,50, obtido por tratamento térmico à 450C, que apresentou rendimentos em ésteres metílicos de até 98,5% sob condições específicas. A metodologia da superfície de resposta foi utilizada visando estabelecer as condições ótimas para maximizar o rendimento em ésteres metílicos, tendo sido encontradas a temperatura de 165oC e a concentração de catalisador de 5,8% m/m em relação massa de óleo, no caso da relação molar metanol/óleo de soja limitada em 15. A baixa relação de ômega-6/ômega-3 esta relacionada com propriedades benéficas para a saúde óssea. No entanto, a dieta rica nestes compostos pode levar a obesidade. Adipócitos e osteoblastos derivam de células progenitoras comuns, e o consumo de óleo de canola pode ter ação adipogênica e osteogênica. Nosso objetivo foi avaliar a adiposidade abdominal, insulina e estrutura óssea em ratos tratados com dieta contendo baixa relação ômega-6/ômega-3, proveniente do óleo de canola. Após desmame, os ratos foram divididos em grupos alimentados com dieta normocalórica: Controle (S) e experimental (C), contendo 7ml/100g de óleo de soja ou de canola e grupos tratados com dieta rica em lipídios: Controle (7S) ou hiperlipídico contendo 19ml/100g de óleo de soja (19S) ou de canola (19C), até completarem 60 dias de idade. Os dados foram significativos com P<0,05. No primeiro modelo, o grupo C apresentou redução de: Massa e área do adipócito intra-abdominal; Colesterol; Insulina; Densidade mineral (DMO) e massa óssea total e na coluna vertebral; Massa do fêmur; Espessura da diáfise; DMO do fêmur e das vértebras lombares e radiodensidade da cabeça do fêmur. No segundo modelo, os grupos 19S e 19C apresentaram maior ingestão calórica, densidade corporal, massa de gordura intra-abdominal, e maior massa e comprimento do fêmur e da coluna lombar. O grupo 19S apresentou maior área e menor número de adipócitos da região retroperitoneal. Glicose e a insulina foram aumentadas no grupo 19C vs. 7S. A tomografia do fêmur revelou maior radiodensidade na região proximal e da coluna lombar, no grupo 19C. Sugerimos que a quantidade e o tipo de lipídio consumido, após o desmame, induzem não somente o desenvolvimento corporal e os depósitos de gordura, além de afetarem a resistência insulínica e a saúde óssea
