Weathering of stone is one of the major reasons for the damage of stone masonry structures and it takes place due to interlinked chemical, physical and biological processes in stones. The key parameters involved in the deterioration processes are temperature, moisture and salt. It is now known that the sudden variations in temperature and moisture greatly accelerate the weathering process of the building stone fabric. Therefore, in order to monitor these sudden variations an effective and continuous monitoring system is needed. Furthermore, it must consist of robust sensors which are accurate and can survive in the harsh environments experienced in and around masonry structures. Although salt penetration is important for the rate of deterioration of stone masonry structures, the processes involved are much slower than the damage associated with temperature and moisture variations. Therefore, in this paper a novel fibre optic temperature cum relative humidity sensor is described and its applicability in monitoring building stones demonstrated. The performance of the sensor is assessed in an experiment comprising wetting and drying of limestone blocks. The results indicate that the novel fibre optic relative humidity sensor which is tailor made for applications in masonry structures performed well in wetting and drying tests, whilst commercial capacitance based sensors failed to recover during the drying regime for a long period after a wetting regime. That is, the fibre optic sensor has the capability to measure both sorption and de-sorption characteristics of stone blocks. This sensor is used in a test wall in Oxford and the data thus obtained strengthened the laboratory observations.

A potential standard method for measuring the relative dissolution rate to estimate the resorbability of calcium-phosphate-based ceramics is proposed. Tricalcium phosphate (TCP), magnesium-substituted TCP (MgTCP) and zinc-substituted TCP (ZnTCP) were dissolved in a buffer solution free of calcium and phosphate ions at pH 4.0, 5.5 or 7.3 at nine research centers. Relative values of the initial dissolution rate (relative dissolution rates) were in good agreement among the centers. The relative dissolution rate coincided with the relative volume of resorption pits of ZnTCP in vitro. The relative dissolution rate coincided with the relative resorbed volume in vivo in the case of comparison between microporous MgTCPs with different Mg contents and similar porosity. However, the relative dissolution rate was in poor agreement with the relative resorbed volume in vivo in the case of comparison between microporous TCP and MgTCP due to the superimposition of the Mg-mediated decrease in TCP solubility on the Mg-mediated increase in the amount of resorption. An unambiguous conclusion could not be made as to whether the relative dissolution rate is predictive of the relative resorbed volume in vivo in the case of comparison between TCPs with different porosity. The relative dissolution rate may be useful for predicting the relative amount of resorption for calcium-phosphate-based ceramics having different solubility under the condition that the differences in the materials compared have little impact on the resorption process such as the number and activity of resorbing cells.

Dans le domaine des centres d’appels, l’affectation d’agents au service à la clientèle efficaces et satisfaits représente une activité cruciale pour toute direction dédiée aux ressources humaines de ces unités d’affaires. Or, pour parvenir à prendre de bonnes décisions d’embauche et de rejet, des instruments de mesure et d’évaluation des compétences sont souvent mis à contribution. À cet effet, les tests de jugement situationnel (TJS) sont de plus en plus utilisés pour la sélection du personnel. L’objet de cette thèse est donc de vérifier l’efficacité relative des différentes méthodes d’élaboration des grilles de correction des TJS. En effet, jusqu’à présent, trois méthodes ont été privilégiées par les concepteurs de tests (Weekley, Ployhart, & Holtz, 2006) : (1) l’approche rationnelle ou théorique (2) l’approche empirique et (3) le recours à des experts. La possibilité qu’une combinaison de ces différentes approches puisse conduire à de meilleurs résultats est également explorée. Pour y parvenir, le résultat total obtenu à un TJS a été mis en lien avec une évaluation du rendement global effectuée par un supérieur immédiat en y appliquant huit grilles de correction différentes. Au total, un échantillon de 312 employés œuvrant dans des emplois de téléopérateurs au sein d’une grande institution financière québécoise ont participé à cette recherche. Dans l’ensemble, les résultats indiquent qu’une approche empirique permet généralement d’obtenir de meilleures statistiques descriptives en termes de distribution et de dispersion des scores pour un processus de sélection. Cependant, des analyses corrélationnelles indiquent qu’une approche multiple ou méthode hybride, basée sur une intégration des informations fournies par différentes sources d’informations (empirique, théorique et basé sur les experts) pour l’élaboration d’une grille de correction d’un TJS, permet de mieux prédire le rendement des employés (r=0,247**) comparativement à l’utilisation de la théorie pour définir les attentes (r=0,162**), le recours à des experts de contenu œuvrant dans le domaine de pratique (r=0,164**) ou l’utilisation d’une approche empirique (r=0,154*). L’objectif de la présente étude était d’évaluer un test d’estérase leucocytaire (LE) pour le diagnostic de l’endométrite subclinique chez les vaches Holstein en période postpartum. Les tests effectués à partir d’échantillons provenant soit de l’endomètre (UtLE) ou du col utérin (CxLE) ont été comparés à la cytologie endométriale (CE). Par ailleurs, deux méthodes d’évaluation des lames ont été comparées. Deux cent quatre vingt-cinq vaches Holstein de 5 troupeaux laitiers commerciaux ont été évaluées entre 21 et 47 jours en lait (JEL). Soixante sept vaches ont été diagnostiquées avec une endométrite clinique suite à un examen transrectal et vaginoscopique et ont été exclues de l’étude. Deux cent dix-huit vaches ont eu des prélèvements pour la CE et le test LE. La fonction ovarienne a été déterminée à la palpation transrectale. La banque de données utilisée pour chacune des vaches a été effectuée à partir du logiciel DSA (Dossier de Santé Animale) laitier. Le pourcentage de neutrophiles était significativement corrélé avec les scores de LE utérin et cervical. L’activité de CxLE et UtLE diminuait significativement avec les JEL, mais n’était pas associée au risque de gestation à 90 JEL (n= 186). Le pourcentage de neutrophiles mesuré à la CE entre 32 et 47 JEL était associé significativement au risque de gestation à 90 JEL (n=94, P=0.04). Pour la même période, selon une analyse de survie, les vaches avec >2,6% de neutrophiles à la CE étaient définies comme étant atteintes d’une endométrite subclinique avec une prévalence de 56%. Les résultats indiquent que le test d’estérase utérin ou cervical a une bonne concordance avec le pourcentage de neutrophiles à la CE. Une endométrite subclinique diagnostiquée par cytologie endometriale entre 32 et 47 JEL est associée à une réduction du risque de gestation au premier service.

Planners in public and private institutions would like coherent forecasts of the components of age-specic mortality, such as causes of death. This has been di cult to achieve because the relative values of the forecast components often fail to behave in a way that is coherent with historical experience. In addition, when the group forecasts are combined the result is often incompatible with an all-groups forecast. It has been shown that cause-specic mortality forecasts are pessimistic when compared with all-cause forecasts (Wilmoth, 1995). This paper abandons the conventional approach of using log mortality rates and forecasts the density of deaths in the life table. Since these values obey a unit sum constraint for both conventional single-decrement life tables (only one absorbing state) and multiple-decrement tables (more than one absorbing state), they are intrinsically relative rather than absolute values across decrements as well as ages. Using the methods of Compositional Data Analysis pioneered by Aitchison (1986), death densities are transformed into the real space so that the full range of multivariate statistics can be applied, then back-transformed to positive values so that the unit sum constraint is honoured. The structure of the best-known, single-decrement mortality-rate forecasting model, devised by Lee and Carter (1992), is expressed in compositional form and the results from the two models are compared. The compositional model is extended to a multiple-decrement form and used to forecast mortality by cause of death for Japan

El objetivo de este artículo es determinar si el incremento en la tasa de desempleo tiene algún efecto sobre la tasa de divorcios. Con este fin se utilizan series de tiempo y datos de corte transversal para Japón. También se incluyen la tasa de crimenes y el promedio de las horas trabajadas como variables explicativas. Adicionalmente se efectúa análisis de cointegración con el fin de evitar relaciones espúreas entre las series de tiempo. Los resultados sugieren que existe una correlación positiva entre la tasa de desempleo y la tasa de divorcios. También confirmamos que existe una relación cronológica cercana entre el desempleo y el divorcio.

Urban greening solutions such as green roofs help improve residents’ thermal comfort and building insulation. However, not all plants provide the same level of cooling. This is partially due to differences in plant structure and function, including different mechanisms that plants employ to regulate leaf temperature. Ranking of multiple leaf/plant traits involved in the regulation of leaf temperature (and, consequently, plants’ cooling ‘service’) is not well understood. We therefore investigated the relative importance of water loss, leaf colour, thickness and extent of pubescence for the regulation of leaf temperature, in the context of species for semi-extensive green roofs. Leaf temperature were measured with an infrared imaging camera in a range of contrasting genotypes within three plant genera (Heuchera, Salvia and Sempervivum). In three glasshouse experiments (each evaluating three or four genotypes of each genera) we varied water availability to the plants and assessed how leaf temperature altered depending on water loss and specific leaf traits. Greatest reductions in leaf temperature were closely associated with higher water loss. Additionally, in non-succulents (Heuchera, Salvia), lighter leaf colour and longer hair length (on pubescent leaves) both contributed to reduced leaf temperature. However, in succulent Sempervivum, colour/pubescence made no significant contribution; leaf thickness and water loss rate were the key regulating factors. We propose that this can lead to different plant types having significantly different potentials for cooling. We suggest that maintaining transpirational water loss by sustainable irrigation and selecting urban plants with favourable morphological traits is the key to maximising thermal benefits provided by applications such as green roofs.

To assess the quality of school education, much of educational research is concerned with comparisons of test scores means or medians. In this paper, we shift this focus and explore test scores data by addressing some often neglected questions. In the case of Brazil, the mean of test scores in Math for students of the fourth grade has declined approximately 0,2 standard deviation in the late 1990s. But what about changes in the distribution of scores? It is unclear whether the decline was caused by deterioration in student performance in upper and/or lower tails of the distribution. To answer this question, we propose the use of the relative distribution method developed by Handcock and Morris (1999). The advantage of this methodology is that it compares two distributions of test scores data through a single distribution and synthesizes all the differences between them. Moreover, it is possible to decompose the total difference between two distributions in a level effect (changes in median) and shape effect (changes in shape of the distribution). We find that the decline of average-test scores is mainly caused by a worsening in the position of all students throughout the distribution of scores and is not only specific to any quantile of distribution.

Aim. The aim of the study was to verify whether endurance training may induce changes on the percentage of peak heart rate (% peak HR) at the lactate threshold (LT) intensity in untrained elderly. Methods. Sixteen healthy men (64.3 ± 4.1 yrs) underwent an incremental test on cycloergometer to determine the LT and the corresponding % peak HR at LT intensity. Afterwards, they were randomly distributed into two groups (n = 8 each): endurance training (ET) and control (C). The ET exercised 3 days a week for 12 weeks. The training session was divided into warm-up (5 min at 50% of LT;), a main part, and a cool-down (5 min 50% below of LT). The main part had a gradual increased volume through the weeks of 2 min. The initial volume on the 1st week was 25 min reaching 47 min at the 12th week. The relative intensity was kept constant (90 to 100% of LT). Results. After 12 weeks, the % peak HR at LT did not change significantly for both groups P > 0.05 (ET 82.9 ± 4.1 vs. 82.5 ± 3.4 and Ç 80.2 ± 7.1 vs. 81.8 ± 7.1). Conclusion. We conclude that endurance training proposed does not change the relative intensity at LT in elderly.
