A brief intervention using motivational and cognitive behavioural approaches to help change drug use. Also offer alternative brief interventions for clients not suited to the current approach. This manual is divided into five sections: Section 1. Context Key points from the National Drug Strategy Monograph No 51. Models of Intervention and Care for Psychostimulant Users are included to present the evidence supporting this type of intervention for regular amphetamine users.  A flow-chart to place the intervention in a treatment context. Section 2. Brief background to the study and summary of results of evaluation A brief description of how the study was developed, undertaken and evaluated. A brief description of the evaluation outcome data (detailed results will be published separately). Section 3. The intervention The CBT intervention is presented in a clear and easy to use format for practitioners. Section 4. Suggested alternative brief interventions for those not suitable for the current intervention This section provides an overview of recommendations for alternative interventions for psychostimulant users who are unsuitable for the CBT intervention (e.g. those who are not considering change, experimental users etc). Section 5. Other available resources This section lists a range of other resources that are currently available for practitioners working with psychostimulant users. This treatment guide has not been designed to stand alone. Rather, practitioners are encouraged to: 1. Acquaint themselves with the current research and clinical literature. The recently completed monograph Models of Intervention and Care for Psychostimulant Users is an excellent resource for current evidence supporting practice in this area. 2. Undertake training in CBT and motivational enhancement techniques if unfamiliar with these approaches. 3. Obtain ongoing clinical supervision. This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

A questionnaire investigating adolescents' opinions and experiences regarding marijuana use was administered to 163 adolescents and young adults (96 boys and 67 girls) aged 13 to 20 (mean age = 16.8, s.d. = 1.5). Items referred to marijuana and other substances' dangerousness, representations regarding the positive and negative consequences of marijuana use. Responses were compared according to marijuana use status (classified into never/occasional use, current regular use and past regular use). Results show that adolescents' opinions differ according to their experience with marijuana use. Current regular users evaluate marijuana as less dangerous, but alcohol and heroin as more dangerous in comparison with never/occasional and past users. Current and past users are more likely to define marijuana as a medical drug and a plant used in agriculture, and less likely to define it as an illegal drug. Current and past users evaluate marijuana use as a way to cope with stress, to relax to a greater extent than do never/occasional users do. The latter attribute more negative consequences to marijuana use such as diminished driving ability and school performance and a pathway to hard drugs.

Humans are not programmed to be inactive. The combination of both accelerated sedentary lifestyle and constant food availability disturbs ancient metabolic processes leading to excessive storage of energy in tissue, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. As a consequence, the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes, obesity and the metabolic syndrome has increased significantly over the last 30 years. A low level of physical activity and decreased daily energy expenditure contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality following atherosclerotic vascular damage. Physical inactivity leads to the accumulation of visceral fat and consequently the activation of the oxidative stress/inflammation cascade, which promotes the development of atherosclerosis. Considering physical activity as a 'natural' programmed state, it is assumed that it possesses atheroprotective properties. Exercise prevents plaque development and induces the regression of coronary stenosis. Furthermore, experimental studies have revealed that exercise prevents the conversion of plaques into a vulnerable phenotype, thus preventing the appearance of fatal lesions. Exercise promotes atheroprotection possibly by reducing or preventing oxidative stress and inflammation through at least two distinct pathways. Exercise, through laminar shear stress activation, down-regulates endothelial AT1R (angiotensin II type 1 receptor) expression, leading to decreases in NADPH oxidase activity and superoxide anion production, which in turn decreases ROS (reactive oxygen species) generation, and preserves endothelial NO bioavailability and its protective anti-atherogenic effects. Contracting skeletal muscle now emerges as a new organ that releases anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-6 (interleukin-6). IL-6 inhibits TNF-α (tumour necrosis factor-α) production in adipose tissue and macrophages. The down-regulation of TNF-α induced by skeletal-muscle-derived IL-6 may also participate in mediating the atheroprotective effect of physical activity.

We derive analytical expressions for the propagation speed of downward combustion fronts of thin solid fuels with a background flow initially at rest. The classical combustion model for thin solid fuels that consists of five coupled reaction-convection-diffusion equations is here reduced into a single equation with the gas temperature as the single variable. For doing so we apply a two-zone combustion model that divides the system into a preheating region and a pyrolyzing region. The speed of the combustion front is obtained after matching the temperature and its derivative at the location that separates both regions. We also derive a simplified version of this analytical expression expected to be valid for a wide range of cases. Flame front velocities predicted by our analyticalexpressions agree well with experimental data found in the literature for a large variety of cases and substantially improve the results obtained from a previous well-known analytical expression

Neuropathic pain is a common form of chronic pain, and is unsuccessfully alleviated by usual medications. Mounting evidence strongly point at non-neuronal glial cells in the spinal cord as key actors behind the persistence of pain. In particular, a change in the astrocytic capacity to regulate extracellular concentrations of neurotransmitters might account for the strengthened spinal nociceptive neurotransmission. Therefore, we investigated whether spinal expressions of GABA (GAT) and glutamate (EAAT) transporters were affected in the spared nerve injury (SNI) rat model of neuropathic pain. SNI was induced in male Sprague-Dawley rats by a unilateral section of tibial and common peroneal branches of the sciatic nerve, leaving the sural branch untouched. Western-blot analysis was performed to study the expression of GAT-1 and GAT-3 as well as EAAT-1 and EAAT-2, the main astrocytic GABA and glutamate transporters respectively. Seven days post-surgery, a significant increase in GAT-1, GAT-3 and EAAT-1 expressions is detected in both ipsilateral and contralateral sides of lumbar spinal cord in comparison to sham animals. No change in EAAT-2 signal could be detected. Furthermore, the astrocytic reaction parallels the glutamate and GABA transporters changes as we found an increased GFAP expression compared to the sham condition, in both spinal sides. Together, our results indicate that modifications in GABA and glutamate transport may occur along with SNI-associated painful neuropathy and identify spinal neurotransmitter reuptake machinery as a putative pharmacological target in neuropathic pain.

We propose a restoration algorithm for band limited images that considers irregular(perturbed) sampling, denoising, and deconvolution. We explore the application of a family ofregularizers that allow to control the spectral behavior of the solution combined with the irregular toregular sampling algorithms proposed by H.G. Feichtinger, K. Gr¨ochenig, M. Rauth and T. Strohmer. Moreover, the constraints given by the image acquisition model are incorporated as a set of localconstraints. And the analysis of such constraints leads to an early stopping rule meant to improvethe speed of the algorithm. Finally we present experiments focused on the restoration of satellite images, where the micro-vibrations are responsible of the type of distortions we are considering here. We will compare results of the proposed method with previous methods and show an extension tozoom.

3,537 men enrolling in 2007 for mandatory army recruitment procedures were assessed for the co-occurrence of risky licit substance use among risky cannabis users. Risky cannabis use was defined as at least twice weekly; risky alcohol use as 6+ drinks more than once/monthly, or more than 20 drinks per week; and risky tobacco use as daily smoking. Ninety-five percent of all risky cannabis users reported other risky use. They began using cannabis earlier than did non-risky users, but age of onset was unrelated to other risky substance use. A pressing public health issue among cannabis users stems from risky licit substance use warranting preventive efforts within this age group.

Asymptotic chi-squared test statistics for testing the equality ofmoment vectors are developed. The test statistics proposed aregeneralizedWald test statistics that specialize for different settings by inserting andappropriate asymptotic variance matrix of sample moments. Scaled teststatisticsare also considered for dealing with situations of non-iid sampling. Thespecializationwill be carried out for testing the equality of multinomial populations, andtheequality of variance and correlation matrices for both normal andnon-normaldata. When testing the equality of correlation matrices, a scaled versionofthe normal theory chi-squared statistic is proven to be an asymptoticallyexactchi-squared statistic in the case of elliptical data.

After the international trends towards inclusive education, Chinese legislations mandate the inclusion of students with disabilities into the regular education classroom. The purpose of this study was to investigate the kindergarten teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education of children with disabilities in the regular classroom, in Wuhan, China, as well their sense of responsibility to include children with disabilities in regular classroom. Ninety kindergarten teachers from public and private kindergartens in Wuhan participated in this study. Descriptive analysis demonstrated that, in general, kindergarten teachers we studied have negative or contradictory attitudes towards inclusive education of children with disabilities in regular classroom. Statistically non-significant differences were found between teachers’ attitudes towards inclusion and teachers’ demographic variables (age, education degree, teaching experience, experience teaching children with disabilities, time experience with children with disabilities and training in special education). Significant correlation was found between teachers’ attitudes towards inclusive education and their sense of responsibility to include children with disabilities in regular classroom. The results allowed the identification of some crucial aspects necessary to achieve the inclusive education

Iowa Code § 8D.10 requires certain state agencies prepare an annual report to the General Assembly certifying the identified savings associated with that state agency’s use of the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). This report covers estimated cost savings related to video conferencing via ICN for the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT). In FY 2008, the DOT did not conduct any sessions utilizing ICN’s video conferencing system. Therefore, no cost savings were calculated for this report.
