O objetivo da presente dissertação é entender como ocorre a ficcionalização da memória da guerra colonial portuguesa nos romances Os Cus de Judas e A Costa dos Murmúrios e as estratégias usadas pelos autores para expressar essa memória em termos literários. Essas narrativas ao constatarem o colapso da antiga utopia colonialista do discurso nacional português, propõem uma revisão dos antigos valores nacionais e da retórica do regime salazarista, que afetou de forma profunda a vida dos autores. Em ambas as narrativas, a experiência da guerra é reconstruída através do testemunho e da reavaliação das reminiscências do passado das personagens, o que confere às obras um perfil confessional. Ao desmontar o tradicional relato histórico, relativizando verdades universalmente aceitas, a ficção visa preencher as lacunas do discurso histórico oficial, entendido como uma escritura dos vencedores. O confronto entre a memória individual resgatada pelas personagens e a memória legitimada da nação tem uma função redentora sobre o passado na medida em que interrompe a lógica dominante no momento presente. O estudo das referidas obras individualmente é concluído com uma análise sob o viés comparativo que visa estabelecer semelhanças e possíveis discrepâncias na forma de representação das memórias da guerra colonial

Perante diversas situações da engenharia são utilizadas formulações empíricas de dimensionamento baseadas em dados de campo e experiência profissional que definem muito o caráter subjetivo da metodologia padrão de projeto. O presente trabalho de pesquisa aborda os diversos métodos de obtenção dos esforços gerados em dutos enterrados submetidos a cargas dinâmicas e estáticas e sua posterior reavaliação através de modelagem numérica com o programa Plaxis 3D. Os métodos analíticos não convencionais foram comparados com o método padrão de cálculo sendo que o mesmo demonstrou ter uma boa precisão mesmo sem considerar outros fatores importantes como a parcela de resistência devida à coesão do solo e sua deformabilidade. A modelagem numérica demonstrou o conservadorismo do método de Marston e o subdmensionamento do espraiamento em prisma devido aos efeitos locais ocasionados pela adoção do recobrimento mínimo e sobrecarga dinâmica elevada. Também se observou, através da modelagem 3D, que a utilização dos dois métodos clássicos favorecem a obtenção de resultados dentro da razoabilidade.Verificou-se também, como resultado desta pesquisa, que a proposta de um método clássico modificado permite uma melhor aproximação da carga que atinge o duto.

Mundialmente, eventos relatados constituídos por incidentes e acidentes em radioterapia, tem aumentado ao longo dos últimos 25 anos e a maioria destes eventos são resultados de falha humana, além de terem ocorrido com maior frequência em centros sofisticados que utilizam alta tecnologia. Em radioterapia a Gestão da Qualidade necessita de uma abordagem prospectiva através de análise de risco. Esta abordagem é defendida por recentes publicações por ser atualmente uma urgência em virtude do expressivo número de acidentes ocorridos. Dada a complexidade do processo em radioterapia, a busca pela qualidade do tratamento de forma a garantir a segurança do paciente é um dos assuntos mais discutidos mundialmente. Embora apenas 14% dos centros de radioterapia no Brasil ofereçam tratamentos com a técnica de radiocirurgia intracranial (SRS), estudos relativos a qualidade do tratamento relacionada a segurança do paciente submetido à esta técnica, é de relevante importância, pois qualquer desvio da dose prescrita é considerado muito mais crítico que em outras modalidades de tratamento radioterápico, já que são utilizadas altas doses de radiação que em geral variam de 10 Gy a 40 Gy para lesões até 50 mm de diâmetro, que são aplicadas em uma única fração ou até cinco frações. Tendo em vista tais conhecimentos, o objetivo deste trabalho foi atender um novo paradigma de Gestão da Qualidade, através do desenvolvimento de um modelo de análise de risco e de um Índice de Qualidade para a SRS no Brasil, a partir da técnica de Mapa do Processo e FMEA utilizadas pelo TG 100/AAPM. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em três centros de radioterapia de referência em alta tecnologia, dois localizados no Rio de Janeiro e um em São Paulo. Um Mapa do Processo de SRS foi identificado em cada centro de radioterapia e em seguida foi aplicada a técnica FMEA para todos os subprocessos identificados no mapa. A partir dos valores de NPR obtidos pela FMEA foi realizado um ranqueamento dos modos de falha. Modos de falha com NPR ≥ 100 e S ≥ 7 foram escolhidos como prioridade para implementação de estratégias de segurança. A partir das pontuações do parâmetro S atribuídas na aplicação da FMEA foi criado o Índice de Severidade (IS) e um Índice de Qualidade (IQ) foi criado a partir de uma relação entre o NPR e o IS. O resultado deste estudo, indica que as estratégias de segurança sejam implementadas para os 10 primeiros modos de falha do ranking e uma reavaliação do processo deve ocorrer a cada 1 ano. É também indicado que o IQ obtenha uma melhora mínima de 9% após a reavaliação do processo. De forma geral, o estudo mostrou que a adoção da ferramenta FMEA juntamente com o IQ são de fato justificadas, por minimizar os riscos para o paciente, melhorando a qualidade do tratamento aprimorando a segurança, criando mecanismos que permitam a garantia de que a dose será entregue de forma precisa e exata, e consequentemente, aumentando as chances de cura ou do controle local com uma desejada qualidade de vida para estes pacientes.

Residential RC framed structures suffered heavily during the 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat, India. These types of structures also saw severe damage in other earthquakes such as the 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey and 921 Ji-Ji earthquake in Taiwan. In this paper the seismic response of residential structures was investigated using physical modelling. Idealised soft storey and top heavy, two degrees of freedom (2DOF) portal frame structures were developed and tested on saturated and dry sand models at 25 g using the Schofield Centre 10-m Beam Centrifuge. It was possible to recreate observed field behaviour using these models. As observed in many of the recent earthquakes, soft storey structures were found to be particularly vulnerable to seismic loads. Elastic response spectra methods are often used in the design of simple portal frame structures. The seismic risk of these structures can be significantly increased due to modifications such as removal of a column or addition of heavy water tanks on the roof. The experimental data from the dynamic centrifuge tests on such soft storey or top-heavy models was used to evaluate the predictions obtained from the response spectra. Response spectra were able to predict seismic response during small to moderate intensity earthquakes, but became inaccurate during strong earthquakes and when soil structure interaction effects became important. Re-evaluation of seismic risk of such modified structures is required and time domain analyses suggested by building codes such as IBC, UBC or NEHRP may be more appropriate. © Springer 2006.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of configuration on supply network capability. It was believed that a configuration perspective might provide new insights on the capability and performance of supply networks, a gap in the literature, and provide a basis for the development of tools to aid their analysis and design. Design/methodology/ approach - The methodology involved the development of a configuration definition and mapping approach extending established strategic and firm level constructs to the network operational level. The resulting tools were tested and refined in a series of case studies across a range of sectors and value chain models. Supply network capability assessments, from the perspective of the focal firm, were then compared with their configuration profiles. Findings - The configuration mapping tools were found to give new insights into the structure of supply networks and allow comparisons to be made across sectors and business models through the use of consistent and quantitative methods and common presentation. They provide the foundations for linking configuration to capability and performance, and contribute to supply network design and development by highlighting the intrinsic capabilities associated with different configurations. Research limitations/implications - Although multiple case networks have been investigated, the configuration exemplars remain suggestive models. The research suggests that a re-evaluation of operational process excellence models is needed, where the link between process maturity and performance may require a configuration context. Practical implications - Advantages of particular configurations have been identified with implications for supply network development and industrial policy. Originality/value - The paper seeks to develop established strategic management configuration concepts to the analysis and design of supply networks by providing a robust operational definition of supply network configuration and novel tools for their mapping and assessment. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

Luo Ning ( Mineralogy, Petrology, Deposit Mineralogy) Directed by Fu Liyun With the increase of the level of exploration and development, North China field, as one of the maturing fields in the east, has gradually turned their prospecting targets to frontiers such as deep zones, lithologic hydrocarbon reservoirs, low permeable layers, special lithostromes, etc, which propose new challenges to mating technique of exploration engineering. In it, the special lithostrome of clay carbonate in Shu-Lu cave in Middle Flank exploration area locates in Es_3 generating rock. The area distribution is large, formation thickness is over 100 meters, the oil accumulation condition is excellent, prognostic reserves is over 80,000,000 tons, but how to effectively stimulate the special low permeable and fractured reservoir has become the bottle neck problem of stimulation and stable yields. In this thesis, through comprehensive evaluation and analysis of lithology, lithomechanics, hydrocarbon reservoir characteristics, the characteristics of fluid flow through porous medium and the stimulation measures in the past, we acquire new cognition of clay carbonate reservoirs, in addition, the research and application of first hydraulic fracturing has gained positive effect and formed commensurable comprehensive reservoir evaluation technique and mating engineering technique of hydraulic fracturing. The main cognitions and achievements are as follows: 1.Study of geological information such as lithololy analysis and nuclear magnetic logging, etc, indicates that clay carbonate formation of Shu-Lu cave is anisotropic, low permeable with high shale content, whose accumulation space gives priority to microcracks. 2.The analysis of lithomechanics of clay carbonate indicates that the hardness is moderate, Young’s modulus is between that of sandstone and limestone, clay carbonate presents plastic property and its breakdown pressure is high because of the deep buried depth. 3.The analysis of the drillstem test curves indicates that the flow and build-up pressure curve of clay carbonate of Shu-Lu cave mainly has three types: formation contamination block-up type, low permeable type, formation energy accumulation slowness type; the reservoir characteristics presents double porosity media, radial compounding, uniform flow vertical fracture, isotropy, moniliform reservoir type. The target well Jingu 3 belongs to moniliform reservoir type. 4.Through recognition and re-evaluation of the treatment effect and technologic limitations of acidizing, acid fracturing and gelled acidizing in the past, based on the sufficient survey and study of hydraulic fracturing home and abroad, combined with comprehensive formation study of target well, we launched the study of the optimization of hydraulic fracturing technique, forming the principal clue and commensurable mating technology aimed at clay carbonate formation, whose targets are preventing leak off, preventing sand bridge, preventing embedment, controlling fracture height, forming long fracture. 5. The eight-century Whitby Vita Gregorii is one of the earliest examples of Anglo-Saxon hagiography, and is the earliest surviving life of Gregory the Great (590-604). The work has proved itself an anomaly in subject matter, style and approach, not least because of the writer’s apparently arbitrary insertion of an account of the retrieval of the relics of the Anglo-Saxon King Edwin (d.633). There has, however, been relatively little research on the document to date, the most recent concentrating on elements in the Gregorian material in the work. The present thesis adapts a methodology which identifies patristic exegetical themes and techniques in the Vita. That is not only in material originating from the pen of Gregory himself, which is freely quoted and cited by the writer, but also in the narrative episodes concerning the Pope. It also identifies related exegetical themes underlying the narrative of the Anglo-Saxon material in the document, and this suggests that the work is of much greater coherence then has previously been thought. In the course of the thesis some of the Vita Gregorii’s major patristic themes are compared with Bede and other insular writers in the presentation of topics that have been of considerable interest to insular historians in recent years. That is themes including: the conversion and salvation of the English people; the ideal pastor; monastic influence on formation of Episcopal spiritual authority; relations between king and bishop. The thesis also includes a re-evaluation of the possible historical context and purpose of the work, and demonstrates the value of a proper understanding of the Vita’s spiritual nature in order to achieve this. Finally the research is supported by a new structural analysis of the entire Vita Gregorii as an artefact formed within literary traditions.

This research asks the question: “What are the relational dynamics in Masters (MA) supervision?” It does so by focusing upon the supervisory relationship itself. It does this through dialoguing with the voices of both MA supervisors and supervisees in the Humanities using a Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) framework. In so doing, this research argues for a re-evaluation of how MA supervision is conceptualised and proposes a new theoretical framework for conceptualising MA supervision as a relational phenomenon. The research design was derived from an Activity Theory-influenced methodology. Data collection procedures included the administration of Activity Theory Logs, individual semi-structured interviews with both supervisors and supervisees and the completion of reflective journals. Grounded Theory was used to analyse the data. The sample for the study consists of three supervisor-supervisee dyads from three disciplines in the Humanities. Data was collected over the course of one academic year, 2010-2011. This research found that both individual and shared relational dynamics play an important role in MA supervision. Individual dynamics, such as supervisors’ iterative negotiation of ambiguity/clarity and supervisees’ boundary work, revealed that both parties attempt to negotiate a separation between their professional-academic identities and personal identities. However, an inherent paradox emerged when the shared relational dynamics of MA supervision were investigated. It was found that the shared space created by the supervisory relationship did not only exist in a physical setting, but was also psychoactive in nature and held strong emotional resonances for both parties involved. This served to undermine the separation between professional-academic and personal identities. As a result, this research argues that the interaction between the individual and shared relational dynamics in MA supervision enables, for both supervisors and supervisees, a disciplined improvisation of academic identity.

It is apparent from the widespread distribution of burnt mounds that Ireland was the most prolific user of pyrolithic technology in Bronze Age Europe. Even though burnt mounds are the most common prehistoric site type in Ireland, they have not received the same level of research as other prehistoric sites. This is primarily due to the paucity of artefact finds and the unspectacular nature of the archaeological remains, compounded by the absence of an appropriate research framework. Due to the widespread use of the technology and the various applications of hot water, narratives related to these sites have revolved around discussions of age and function. This has resulted in a generalised classification, where the term ‘fulacht fia’ covers several site types that have similar features but differing functions and age. The study presents a re-evaluation of fulachtaí fia in light of some 1000 sites excavated in Ireland. This is the most comprehensive study undertaken on the use of pyrolithic technology in prehistoric Ireland, dealing with different aspects of site function, chronology, social role and cultural context. A number of key areas have been identified in relation to our understanding of these sites. Previous investigations of burnt mounds have provided little information on the temporality of individual sites. It has been established that appropriate sampling strategies can provide important information about the formation of individual sites, their relationships to each other and to other monuments in the same cultural landscape. The evidence suggests that considerable caution should be exercised with regard to certain single radiometric dates from burnt stone deposits, based on the degree of certainty of the dated sample and its association with pyrolithic activity. Previously regarded as Bronze Age in date, there are now numerous examples of pyrolithic-type processes in earlier contexts, with the origins of the water-boiling phenomenon now considered to be Early Neolithic. A review of recent excavation evidence provides new insights into the use of pyrolithic technology for cooking. This is based on the discovery of faunal remains at several sites, combined with insights gained through experimental studies. The model proposed here is of open-air communal feasting and food sharing hosted by small family groups, as a medium for social bonding and the construction of community. It is also argued that if cooking was the primary activity taken place at these sites, this should not be viewed as a mundane functional activity, but rather one that actively contributed to the constitution of social relations. The formality of the technology is also supported by the presence of possible specialised structures, some of which were used for cooking/feasting while others were for ritualised sweat-bathing. The duration and frequency of activities associated with burnt mounds and the opportunities they provided for social interaction suggest that these sites contributed some familiar frames of reference to contemporary discourse.

This is a briefing report on when the safety issues identified in a July 2008 report by Jülich should have become apparent In July 2008, the German Jülich nuclear research centre published a report entitled ‘A safety re-evaluation of the AVR pebble bed reactor operation and its consequences for future HTR concepts.’ It concluded: ‘pebble bed HTRs require additional safety related R&D effort and updating of safety analyses before construction.’

The technique of double translational energy spectroscopy.(DTES), recently successfully developed in this laboratory for use with targets of atomic hydrogen, has been used to study one-electron capture by ground-state N2+(2s22p)(2)p(0) ions in collisions with hydrogen atoms at energies within the range 0.8-6.0 keV. Cross sections for the formation of the main excited product channels have been determined. The measurements allow a re-evaluation of our previous TES measurements carried out with N2+ primary beams containing an admixture of metastable N2+(2s2p2)(4)p ions. The main findings of these earlier measurements are confirmed and the DTES measurements now remove any ambiguity in interpretation of the experimental data. While recent theoretical studies correctly predict the two main N+ D-3(0) and P-3(0) product channels, the quantitative agreement with experiment is only partially satisfactory.
