Recent experiments undertaken at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to produce X-ray lasing over the 5-30 nm wavelength range are reviewed. The efficiency of lasing is optimized when the main pumping pulse interacts with a preformed plasma. Experiments using double 75-ps pulses and picosecond pulses superimposed on 300-ps background pulses are described. The use of travelling wave pumping with the approximately picosecond pulse experiments is necessary as the gain duration becomes comparable to the time for the X-ray laser pulse to propagate along the target length. Results from a model taking account of laser saturation and deviations from the speed of light c of the travelling wave and X-ray laser group velocity are presented. We show that X-ray laser pulses as short as 2-3 ps can be produced with optical pumping pulses of approximate to1-ps.

This paper summarises die main results obtained during the two experimental campaigns on TCE X-ray lasers that we have carried out since the last Kyoto X-ray laser Conference in 1998. A two-color (2 omega /1 omega) pumping configuration was tested and led to the observation of a strong lasing line at 16 nm, identified to a 4f-4d transition in Ni-like Ag. A strong x 300-400 enhancement of the 13.9 nm Ni-like 4d-4p lasing emission was obtained when a traveling wave short pulse pumping was applied. Finally the temporal history of the 13.9 nm laser pulse was measured with a high-resolution Streak camera, A very short 2 ps X-ray laser pulse was directly demonstrated for the first time.

Recent progress using the VULCAN laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory to pump X-ray lasing in nickel-like ions is reviewed. Double pulse pumping with similar to 100 ps pulses has been shown to produce significantly greater X-ray laser output than single pulses of duration 0.1-1 ns. With double pulse pumping, the main pumping pulse interacts with a pre-formed plasma created by a pre-pulse. The efficiency of lasing increases as there is a reduced effect of refraction of the X-ray laser beam due to smaller density gradients and larger gain volumes, which enable propagation of the X-ray laser beam along the full length of the target. The record shortest wavelength saturated laser at 5.9 nm has been achieved in Ni-like dysprosium using double pulse pumping of 75 ps duration from the VULCAN laser. A variant of the double pulse pumping using a single similar to 100 ps laser pulse and a superimposed short similar to 1 ps pulse has been found to further increase the efficiency of lasing by reducing the effects of over-ionisation during the gain period. The record shortest wavelength saturated laser pumped by a short similar to 1 ps pulse has been achieved in Ni-like samarium using the VULCAN laser operating in chirped pulse amplified (CPA) mode. A similar to 3 ps travelling wave chirped pulse amplified pulse at 6 x 10(14) W cm(-2) superimposed on similar to 300 ps background pulses is shown to be an efficient method to pump transient collisional excitation X-ray lasers in both Ni-like and Ne-like ions. Measurements of X-ray laser output as a function of plasma length are fitted with results of an amplified spontaneous emission model of the laser output taking account of travelling wave pumping effects. A small signal gain coefficient similar to 42 cm(-1) and a effective gain length product of similar to 18 are measured for the Ni-like Sn laser at 120 Angstrom. Simulations from a hydrodynamic and atomic physics code (EHYBRID) coupled to a ray trace code show that a spatially averaged small signal gain similar to 65 cm(-1) can be obtained in Ne-like Ge provided the optimum pumping pulse arrangement is used. We report a systematic study of double pulse pumping of the Ni-like Sm x-ray laser at 73 Angstrom, currently the shortest wavelength saturated x-ray laser. It is found that the Sm x-ray laser output can change by orders of magnitude when the intensity ratio of the pumping pulses and their relative delay are varied. Optimum pumping conditions are found and interpreted in terms of a simple model. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)07102-9].

The transient-excitation pumping scheme, in which a picosecond duration pulse rapidly heats the plasma preformed by a low-intensity nanosecond pulse, was used to pump the Ne-like germanium, J = 0-1 transition at 19.6 nm. A small-signal gain coefficient of 30 cm(-1) was measured for targets less than or equal to 5 mm long. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

We have studied the effect of prepulses in enhancing the efficiency of generating ASE beams in soft X-ray laser plasma amplifiers based on pumping Ne-like ions, Slab targets were irradiated with a weak prepulse followed by a main plasma heating pulse of nanosecond duration, Time-integrated; time and spectrally resolved and time and angularly resolved lasing emissions on the 3p-3s (J=0-1) XUV lasing lines of Ne-like Ni, Cu and Zn at wavelengths 232 Angstrom 221 Angstrom and 212 Angstrom respectively have been monitored. Measurements were made for pre-pulse/main-pulse intensity ratios from 10(-5)-10(-1) and for pump delay times of 2 ns and 4.5 ns. Zinc is shown to exhibit a peak in output intensity at similar to 2x10(-3) pre-pulse fraction for a 4.5 ns pump delay, with a main pulse pump intensity of similar to 1.3x10(13) W cm(-2) on a 20 mm target. The Zn lasing emission had a duration of similar to 240 ps and this was insensitive to prepulse fraction. The J=0-1 XUV laser output for nickel and copper increased monotonically with prepulse fraction, with copper targets showing least sensitivity to either prepulse level or prepulse to main pulse delay. Under the conditions of the study, the pre-pulse level was observed to haveno significant influence on the output intensity of the 3p-3s (J=2-1) lines of any of the elements investigated.

Lasing properties of a collisional-excitation Ne-like Ge soft-x-ray laser have been studied with exploding-foil, single-slab, and double-slab targets under identical pumping conditions. Experimental results for the angular intensity distributions and the temporal variations of the lasing intensities are examined with a hydrodynamic code and ray-trace calculations. The observed angular distribution are well reproduced by these analyses, and it is found that the effective gain regions are located on the high-density side of the expected gain regions. It is shown that the observed lasing intensity of the J = 0 to J = 1 line is strongly correlated with the temporal change of the calculated electron temperature for both the slab and the exploding-foil targets.

The real-time dynamics of multiphoton ionization and fragmentation of molecules Na_2 and Na_3 has been studied in molecular beam experiments employing ion and electron spectroscopy together with femtosecond pump-probe techniques. Experiments with Na_2 and Na_3 reveal unexpected features of the dynamics of the absorption of several photons as seen in the one- and three-dimensional vibrational wave packet motion in different potential surfaces and in high laser fields: In Na_2 a second major resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) process is observed, involving the excitation of two electrons and subsequent electronic autoionization. The possibility of controlling a reaction by controlling the duration of propagation of a wave packet on an electronically-excited surface is demonstrated. In high laser fields, the contributions from direct photoionization and from the second REMPI process to the total ion yield change, due to different populations in the electronic states participating in the multiphoton ionization (MPI) processes. In addition, a vibrational wave packet motion in the electronic ground state is induced through stimulated emission pumping by the pump laser. The 4^1 \summe^+_g shelf state of Na_2 is given as an example for performing frequency spectroscopy of highlying electronic states in the time domain. Pure wave packet effects, such as the spreading and the revival of a vibrational wave packet, are investigated. The three-dimensional wave packet motion in the Na_3 reflects the normal modes in the X and B states, and shows in addition the pseudorotational motion in the B state in real time.

The methanol isotopic species CH3OD has also proved to be an efficient and powerful medium to generate radiation in the far infrared (FIR) region. After the critical review of 1994, six papers have been published dealing with new FIR laser lines from this molecule. As a consequence of the use of wide tunability waveguide CO2 lasers as well as a new pulsed CO2 laser operating at hot and sequential bands, as of optical pumping sources, the total number of the FIR laser lines increased from 122 in 1994 to 227 today. In this communication we present an updated and complete catalogue of FIR laser lines generated from CH3OD. Information on wavelength, offset, relative polarization, intensity, and optimum operation pressure is generally available.

We report on a study of the CH3OD molecule in a search for new far-infrared (FIR) laser lines. For optical pumping of large offset vibrational absorption transitions, a continuous-wave waveguide CO2 laser with 300 MHz tunability around each line was used for the first time. As a consequence, 17. new far-infrared laser emissions were observed. For these lines, we also present data on wavelength, intensity, offset, relative polarization, and optimum operation pressure.

We have used our new pulsed CO(2) laser, operating both on regular and hot bands, to excite the (13)CD(3)OH methanol isotopomer. This has lead to the observation of 13 new high-threshold far-infrared laser emissions (also identified as terahertz laser lines), with frequencies in the range between 24.11 and 102.56 cm(-1) (0.72-3.07 THz). The absorption transitions leading to these new FIR laser emissions have been located by observing the optoacoustic absorption spectra around the CO(2) emissions. Here, we present these new far-infrared laser lines, characterized in wavelength, polarization, offset relative to the center of the pumping CO(2) laser transition, relative intensity, and optimum operation pressure.

We report 18 new laser lines from (CH3OH)-C-13 generated in an optically pumped far-infrared laser; the laser lines are in the range of 54.2-420 mu m and are all characterized in wavelength, polarization relative to the pumping CO2 radiation, and pump offset relative to the CO2 center frequency, the frequencies of seven of these new lines along with 10 previously reported lines were measured by an accurate heterodyne technique, mixing them in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) point contact diode, with another laser line of known frequency.

Fourier transform and IR optoacoustic absorption data of (CD3OH)-C-13 were used to search for new FIR laser lines. We have used a waveguide CO2 laser of 300 MHz tunability as the optical pumping source. We report the observation and characterization of 13 new lines. Three of these lines are associated with absorbing transitions appertaining to the weak (CD3)-C-13 asymmetric bending mode.

We have reinvestigated (CH3OH)-C-13 as a source of far-infrared (FIR) laser emission using a CO2 laser as a pumping source. Thirty new FIR laser lines in the range 36.5 mum to 202.6 mum were observed and characterized. Five of them have wavelengths between 36.5 and 75 mum and have sufficient intensity to be used in LMR spectroscopy. Using Fourier-transform spectroscopic data in the infrared (IR) and FIR regions we have determined the assignment for 10 FIR laser transitions and predict nine frequencies for laser lines which have yet to be observed.
