A-type zeolite membranes were successfully synthesized on tubular alpha-Al2O3 supports by secondary growth method with vacuum seeding In the seeding process, a thin, uniform and continuous seeding layer was closely attached to the support surface by the pressure difference between the two sides of the support wall. The effects of seed particle size, suspension concentration, coating pressure difference and coating time on the membrane and its pervaporation properties were investigated. The as-synthesized membranes were characterized by XRD and SEM. The quality of the membranes was evaluated by the pervaporation dehydration of 95 wt. % isopropanol/water mixture at 343 K. High quality A-type zeolite membranes can be reproducibly prepared by the secondary growth method with vacuum seeding under the conditions: seed particle size of 500-1200 nm, suspension concentration of 4-8 g/l, coating pressure difference of 0.0100-0.0250 MPa and coating time of 45-180 s. Carboxin was synthesized and its heat capacities were measured with an automated adiabatic calorimeter over the temperature range from 79 to 380K. The melting point, molar enthalpy (Delta(fus)H(m)) and entropy (Delta(fus)S(m)) of fusion of this compound were determined to be 365.29 +/- 0.06K, 28.193 +/- 0.09 kJ mol(-1) and 77.180 +/- 0.02 J mol(-1) K-1, respectively. The purity of the compound was determined to be 99.55 mol% by using the fractional melting technique. The thermodynamic functions relative to the reference temperature (298.15 K) were calculated based on the heat capacity measurements in the temperature range between 80 and 360 K. The thermal stability of the compound was further investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The DSC curve indicates that the sample starts to decompose at ca. 290degreesC with the peak temperature at 292.7degreesC. The TG-DTG results demonstrate the maximum mass loss rate occurs at 293degreesC corresponding to the maximum decomposition rate. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

Porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes were used as support material for Nafion((R))/PTFE composite membranes. The composite membranes were synthesized by impregnating porous PTFE membranes with a self-made Nafion solution. The resulting composite membranes were mechanically durable and quite thin relative to traditional perfluorosulfonated ionomer membranes (PFSI); we expect the composite membranes to be of low resistance and cost. In this study, we used three kinds of porous PTFE films to prepare Nafion/PTFE composite membranes of different thickness. Scanning electron micrographs and oxygen permeabilities showed that Nafion resin is distributed uniformly in the composite membrane and completely plug the micropores, there is a continuous thin Nation film present on the PTFE surface. The variation in water content of the composite and Nafion 115 membranes with temperature was determined. At the same temperature, water content of the composite membranes was smaller than that of the Nafion 115. In both dry and wet conditions, maximum strength and break strength of C-325(#) and C-345(#) were larger than those of Nafion 112 due to the reinforcing effect of the porous PTFE films. And the PEMFC performances and the lifetime of the composite membranes were also tested on the self-made apparatus. Results showed that the bigger the porosity of the substrate PTFE films, the better the fuel cell performance; the fuel cell performances of the thin composite membranes were superior to that of Nation 115 membrane; and after 180 h stability test at 500 mA/cm(2), the cell voltage showed no obvious drop. Adoption of a sintered stainless steel fiber felt was evaluated as gas diffusion backing in air-breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). By using a sintered stainless steel fiber felt as an anodic gas diffusion backing, the peak power density of an air-breathing DMFC is 24 mW cm(-2), which is better than that of common carbon paper. A 30-h-life test indicates that the degraded performance of the air-breathing DMFC is primarily due to the water flooding of the cathode. Twelve unit cells with each has 6 cm(2) of active area are connected in series to supply the power to a mobile phone assisted by a constant voltage diode. The maximum power density of 26 mW cm(-2) was achieved in the stack, which is higher than that in single cell. The results show that the sintered stainless steel felt is a promising solution to gas diffusion backing in the air-breathing DMFC, especially in the anodic side because of its high electronical conductivity and hydrophilicity. A new process has been suggested for converting natural gas to ethylene by combining oxidative coupling of methane with ethane dehydrogenation to provide an efficient method for the utilization of thermicity and CO2. From their thermodynamics, it is clear that the exothermicity from CH4 oxidative coupling reaction (DeltaH(800degreesC) = -174.3 kJ mol(-1)) can support C2H6 dehydrogenation by CO2 (DeltaH(800degreesC) = + 180.2 kJ mol(-1)). Meanwhile, the two reactions can be conducted under the same reaction conditions, such as the reaction temperature and reaction pressure as well as space velocity. In addition, the CO2 yielded from CH4 oxidative coupling reaction can be directly used for C2H6 dehydrogenation. Two kinds of catalyst are developed for this combined process with an achievement, from which C2H4 content in tail gas can reach attractively 16.4%, which can be used directly to produce ethylbenzene by the alkylation of benzene. Simultaneous NO reduction and CO oxidation in the presence of O-2,H2O and SO2 over Cu/Mg/AUO (Cu-cat), Ce/Mg/Al/O (Ce-cat) and Cu/Ce/Mg/Al/O (CuCe-cat) were studied. At low temperatures (<340 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O enhanced the activity of CuCe-cat for NO and CO conversions, but significantly suppressed the activity of Cu-cat and Ce-cat, At high temperature (720 degreesC), the presence of O-2 or H2O had no adverse effect on the NO and CO conversions over these catalysts. The addition of SO2 to NO + CO + O-2 + H2O system had no effect on the, reaction of CO + O-2 over Cu-cat, but deactivated this catalyst for NO + CO and CO + H2O reactions; over Ce-cat, all of these reactions of NO + CO, CO + O-2 and CO + H2O were suppressed significantly; over CuCe-cat, NO + CO and CO + O-2 reactions were not affected while the reaction of CO + H2O was slightly inhibited. Two series of sulfided Ni or Co promoted Mo/alumina catalysts, having different Ni or Co loadings, were characterized by their activities for the transformation of cyclopentanone into cyclopentanethiol (flow reactor, 220 degrees C, atmospheric pressure) and for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene (flow reactor, 340 degrees C, 3 MPa hydrogen pressure). The addition of the promoter increased significantly the activity of the Mo/alumina catalyst for both reactions, up to a maximum obtained with the catalysts having a (promoter)/(promoter+Mo) molar ratio equal to 0.3-0.4. This increase in activity was due in part to an increase in the hydrogenating properties of the Mo/alumina catalyst. However, an additional modification of the catalyst (basic and nucleophilic properties) must be considered to account for the spectacular effect of the promoter on the rate of the dibenzothiophene direct desulfurization reaction. The conversion of n-C4H10 was undertaken on MoO3/HZSM-5 catalyst at 773-973K and the phases of molybdenum species were detected by XRD. The XRD results show that bulk MoO3 on HZSM-5 can be readily reduced by n-C4H10 to MoO2 at 773 K and MoO2 can be gradually carburized to molybdenum carbide above 813 K. The molybdenum carbide formed from the carburization of MoO2 with n-C4H10 below 893 K is alpha-MoC1-x with fcc-structure, while hcp-molybdenum carbide formed above 933 K. During the evolution of MoO3 to MoO2 (>773 K) or the carburization of MoO2 to molybdenum carbide (>813 K), deep oxidation, cracking and coke deposition are serious, in particular at higher reaction temperatures, these lead to the poor selectivity to aromatics. Aromatization of n-C4H10 can proceed catalytically on both Mo2C/HZSM-5 and MoO2/HZSM-5, the distribution of the products for the two catalysts is similar below 813 K, but the, activity for Mo2C/HZSM-5 is much higher than that for MoO2/HZSM-5. A series of unsupported dimolybdenum nitride (gamma-Mo(2)N) catalysts differing in surface area were prepared by temperature programmed reduction of MoO(3) with a mixture of NH(3):N(2) (90:10). Characterization of catalysts by BET, XRD, TPR and XPS techniques was carried out. The samples were used as catalysts in hydrotreating reactions (simultaneous hydrodesulfurization of thiophene and hydrogenation of cyclohexene). Low surface area gamma-Mo(2)N materials show much higher specific conversions than those with higher surface area. These results indicate that HDS and HYD reactions over gamma-Mo(2)N seem to be structure-sensitive. The relative exposure extent of crystalline planes (111) and (200) over the different catalysts can be associated with their hydrogen adsorption capacities and with their catalytic performances. The catalytic activities are significantly affected by the catalyst pretreatment conditions. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
