Sex chromosome evolution in fish: the formation of the neo-Y chromosome in Eigenmannia (Gymnotiformes)

Chromosomes of a species of Eigenmannia presenting a X1X1X2X2:X1X2Y sex chromosome system, resulting from a Y-autosome Robertsonian translocation, were analyzed using the C-banding technique, chromomycin A(3) (CMA(3)) and mithramycin (MM) staining and in situ digestion by the restriction endonuclease AluI. A comparison of the metacentric Y chromosome of males with the corresponding acrocentrics in females indicated that a C-band-positive, CMA(3)/MM-fluorescent and AluI digestion-resistant region had been lost during the process of translocation, resulting in a diminution of heterochromatin in the males. It is hypothesized that the presence of a smaller amount of G+C-rich heterochromatin in the sex chromosomes of the heteromorphic sex when compared with the homomorphic sex may be associated with the sex determination mechanism in this species and may be a more widely occurring phenomenon in fish with differentiated sex chromosomes than was initially thought.

Mixing of d(x)(-y)(2)(2) and d(xy) superconducting states for different filling and temperature

We investigate the solution of the gap equation for mixed order parameter symmetry states as a function of filling using a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice, the principal (major) component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(x2-y2) type, As suggested in several investigations the minor component of the order parameter is taken to be of the d(xy) type. Both the permissible mixing angles 0 and pi/2 between the two components are considered. As a function of filling pronounced maxima of d(x2-y2) order parameter is accompanied by minima of the d(xy) order parameter. At fixed filling. The temperature dependence of the two components of the order parameter is also studied in all cases. Use of primers derived from a new sequence of the bovine Y chromosome for sexing Bos taurus and Bos indicus embryos

A bovine male-specific marker was identified in our laboratory through random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis. This fragment of 3216 bp was cloned, sequenced and mapped by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) on the taurine Yq. Primers derived from this sequence were initially screened by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for their ability to detect Y-specific segments in zebu and taurine genomic DNA. Two of these primers amplified a 655 bp Y-specific sequence present in taurine and zebu male genomic DNA. These primers were then used for detecting the 655 bp male sequence in DNA from 173 zebu and 30 taurine embryos, which had been previously sexed using primers for the sequence BC 1.2. A critical evaluation of bond strength tests for the assessment of bonding to Y-TZP

Objectives. To compare three different designs for measuring the bond strength between Y-TZP ceramic and a composite material, before and after ceramic surface treatment, evaluating the influence of the size of the adhesive interface for each design.Methods. 'Macro'tensile, microtensile, 'macro'shear, microshear, 'macro'push-out, and micropush-out tests were carried out. Two Y-TZP surface treatments were evaluated: silanization (sil) and tribochemical silica coating (30 mu m silica-modified Al2O3 particles + silanization) (TBS). Failure mode analysis of tested samples was also performed. Results. Both the surface treatment and the size of the bonded interface significantly affected the results (p = 0.00). Regardless of the type of surface treatment, the microtensile and microshear tests had higher values than their equivalent "macro" tests. However, the push-out test showed the highest values for the "macro" test. The tensile tests showed the greatest variability in results. The tribochemical silica coating method significantly increased bond strength for all tests.Significance. Different test designs can change the outcome for Y-TZP/cement interfaces, in terms of mean values and reliability (variability). The 'micro'tests expressed higher bond strengths than their equivalent 'macro'tests, with the exception of the push-out test (macro > micro). (C) 2015 Academy of Dental Materials. A comparative, prospective and randomized evaluation of roux-en-y gastric bypass with and without the silastic ring: a 2-year follow up preliminary report on weight loss and quality of life

Currently, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is one of the most widely used bariatric surgeries. Banding the pouch forms a banded gastric bypass operation, an accepted and frequently used variant. Placing a silastic ring around the pouch to band the gastric bypass operation increases the restriction mechanism. However, the ubiquitous use of the banded gastric bypass remains controversial. One of the controversies is the effect of the silastic ring on patients' perception of their well being after surgery because of the frequency of vomiting. A prospective, blindly randomized, comparative trial was undertaken to resolve this controversy. Four hundred subjects scheduled for gastric bypass surgery were randomized into two arms of the trial, 200 with a silastic ring (WR) and 200 without (NR). After 2-year follow-up, the variables associated with the scores of Bariatric Analysis and Reporting Outcome System (BAROS) were analyzed. The initial median weight (125 kg), BMI (47), and age (36 years) were the same in both the NR and WR groups. The median excess weight loss, weight regain, and incidence of vomiting were 71, 10.5, and 7.75 %, respectively, in the NR group vs. 75.4 and 1.1, and 24.4 % in the WR group. The mean QOL score was 79 % in the NR group vs. 80 % in the WR group. After 2-year follow-up, silastic ring placement in the RYGB resulted in greater weight loss and weight stability and a threefold greater incidence of vomiting. There was no difference in the scores in the quality of life analysis.

Influence of Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery on Vitamin C, Myeloperoxidase, and Oral Clinical Manifestations: A 2-Year Follow-Up Study

Background: Bariatric surgery influences the intake and absorption of nutrients. The serum concentrations of vitamin C, myeloperoxidase (MPO) and oral clinical manifestations were examined in patients two years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Methods: Clinical prospective-study with control-group (CG; n = 26), assessed only once, and the bariatric-group (BG; n = 26), assessed in the basal period and at 12 and 24 months after surgery. The mean ages in the CG and BG were 37.8 +/- 1.51 and 39.6 +/- 1.93 years, respectively, and their body mass indices were 22.07 +/- 0.29 and 45.62 +/- 1.46 kg/m2, respectively. Results: At 12 months after surgery, increased episodes of vomiting (P < .001) and dental hypersensitivity (P=.012) were observed, with a reduction in the saliva buffering capacity of 21.3 2.9% (P=.004). At 24 months after RYGB, we detected a significant reduction in serum vitamin C (32.9 +/- 5.3%, P < .001) and MPO values were higher than in the basal period (P = .032). With regard to oral hygiene habits, 92.3% of patients reported frequent tooth brushing and 96.1% used fluoride, which were similar across the two years. However, dental hypersensitivity (P = .048) was significantly increased than baseline. Conclusions: The results demonstrated that vitamin C deficiency and increased vomiting after RYGB for morbid obesity may contribute to increased periodontal disease. The fact it is impossible to determine which factors (diet, poor compliance with supplementation, vomiting, poor oral hygiene) contributed to the dental problems in these patients is a shortcoming of the report. The author focuses more specifically on the forms of patriotism proposed by Pierre-Laurent De Belloy, author of Le Siege de Calais, France's "first tragedy in which the nation is given the pleasure to take an interest in itself," as well as by his adversaries and his allies. The version of patriotism proffered by De Belloy - a 'fatherland' that he defines as both bourgeois and monarchical - renders problematic several aesthetic and political norms in place in 1765. The author thus responds modestly to one of the most essential questions posed by research on eighteenth-century political and cultural history: how did patriotism operate before the French Revolution?

Dysbalance in sympathetic neurotransmitter release and action in cirrhotic rats: impact of exogenous neuropeptide Y

Splanchnic vasodilation is an essential disturbance in portal hypertension. Increased systemic sympathetic nerve activity is well known, but potential corresponding vascular desensitization is incompletely characterized. Release of splanchnic sympathetic neurotransmitters noradrenaline (NA) and co-transmitter neuropeptide Y (NPY) remains to be elucidated. Finally, the effects of exogenous NPY on these mechanisms are unexplored.

Comparative study of the neuropeptide-Y sympathetic nerves in endometriotic involved and noninvolved sacrouterine ligaments in women with pelvic endometriosis

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To show the relationship between the neuropeptide-Y pelvic sympathetic nerves and neoangiogenesis in the development of endometriosis DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Academic community teaching hospital. PATIENTS: Fifteen consecutive women with unilateral endometriotic infiltration of the sacrouterine ligaments. INTERVENTIONS: A laparoscopic excision/biopsy of involved and noninvolved parts of the sacrouterine ligaments were taken. The sections were incubated with the neuronal marker rabbit polyclonal anti-protein gene product 9.5 and rabbit polyclonal anti-neuropeptide-Y. We made a comparative study on the distribution of nerve fibers and their relationship to the vessels on intact and endometriotic involved tissue. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The results show that a large amount of nerves are present around the blood vessels in the endometriosis samples, and a large number of these nerves are neuropeptide-Y sympathetic nerves. Adrenergic fibers are also present in the intact control subjects, however, in significantly smaller amounts. CONCLUSION: This finding shows a strong relationship between the neuropeptide-Y sympathetic pelvic nerves and the neoangiogenesis required for the development of endometriosis.
