We describe production of methyl and ethyl esters derived from baru oil (Dipteryx alata Vog.). Water and alcohols are removed from the biodiesel obtained by simple distillation. We study the acidity, density, iodine number, viscosity, water content, peroxide number, external appearance, and saponification number of the oil, its methyl and ethyl esters (biodiesels) and their blends (B5, B10, B15, B20, and B30) with commercial diesel fuel.

Background: Mutations in GH-releasing hormone receptor gene (GHRHR) are emerging as the most common cause of autosomal recessive isolated GH deficiency (IGHD). Objective: To search for GHRHR mutations in patients with familial or sporadic IGHD and to investigate founder effects in recurring mutations. Methods: The coding region of GHRHR was entirely amplified and sequenced from DNA of 18 patients with IGHD (16 unrelated) with topic posterior pituitary lobe on MRI. Haplotypes containing promoter SNPs and microsatellites flanking GHRHR were analyzed in patients with c.57+1G>A (IVS1+1G>A) mutation of our previously published kindred and also a Brazilian patient and 2 previously reported Japanese sisters with c. 1146G>A (p.E382E) mutation. Results: A novel homozygous intronic GHRHR c.752-1G>A (IVS7-1G>A) mutation, predicting loss of the constitutive splice acceptor site, was identified in two siblings with IGHD. A compound heterozygous c.[57+1G>A];[1146G>A] and a heterozygous c.527C>T (p.A176V) were found in two sporadic cases. Haplotype analysis provided evidence for a founder effect for the c.57+1G>A mutation and independent recurrence for the c.1146G>A mutation. Conclusion: We report a novel splice-disrupting mutation in GHRHR in 2 siblings and provide evidence that all c.57+1G>A (IVS1+1G>A) mutant chromosomes have the same haplotype ancestor, indicating the occurrence of a founder effect in Brazilian patients with IGHD. A new diruthenium(II,III) complex, of formula [Ru2Cl(ket)(4)], Ruket, containing the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen was synthesized and mainly characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), UV-Vis-IR electronic spectroscopy and FTIR and Raman vibrational spectroscopies. The four drug-carboxylato bridging ligands stabilize a Ru-2(II,III) mixed valent core in a paddlewheel type structure as confirmed by ESI mass spectra, electronic and vibrational spectroscopies and magnetic measurements. Ruket and the analogous compounds containing ibuprofen, Ruibp, and naproxen, Runpx, were tested for the biological effects in the human colon carcinoma cells HT-29 and Caco-2 expressing high and low levels of COX-2 respectively. All compounds only weakly affected the proliferation of the colorectal cancer cells HT-29 and Caco-2, and similarly only partially inhibited the production/activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 by HT-29 cells, suggesting that COX-2 inhibition by these drugs can only partially be involved in the pharmacological effects of these derivatives. Due to its high Curie temperature of 420K and band structure calculations predicting 100% spin polarisation, Sr2FeMoO6 is a potential candidate for spintronic devices. However, the preparation of good quality thin films has proven to be a non-trivial task. Epitaxial Sr2FeMoO6 thin films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on different substrates. Differing from previous reports a post-deposition annealing step at low oxygen partial pressure (10-5 mbar) was introduced and enabled the fabrication of reproducible, high quality samples. According to the structural properties of the substrates the crystal structure and morphology of the thin films are modified. The close interrelation between the structural, magnetic and electronic properties of Sr2FeMoO6 was studied. A detailed evaluation of the results allowed to extract valuable information on the microscopic nature of magnetism and charge transport. Smooth films with a mean roughness of about 2 nm have been achieved, which is a pre-requisite for a possible inclusion of this material in future devices. In order to establish device-oriented sub-micron patterning as a standard technique, electron beam lithography and focussed ion beam etching facilities have been put into operation. A detailed characterisation of these systems has been performed. To determine the technological prospects of new spintronics materials, the verification of a high spin polarisation is of vital interest. A popular technique for this task is point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR). Commonly, the charge transport in a transparent metal-superconductor contact of nanometer dimensions is attributed solely to coherent transport. If this condition is not fulfilled, inelastic processes in the constriction have to be considered. PCAR has been applied to Sr2FeMoO6 and the Heusler compound Co2Cr0.6Fe0.4Al. Systematic deviations between measured spectra and the standard models of PCAR have been observed. Therefore existing approaches have been generalised, in order to include the influence of heating. With the extended model the measured data was successfully reproduced but the analysis has revealed grave implications for the determination of spin polarisation, which was found to break down completely in certain cases.

Recent studies report that intracoronary administration of autologous bone marrow mononucleated cells (BM-MNCs) may improve remodeling of the left ventricle after acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Subgroup analysis suggest that early treatment between days 4 and 7 after AMI is probably most effective; however, the optimal time point of intracoronary cell administration has never been addressed in clinical trials. Furthermore, reliable clinical predictors are lacking for identifying patients who are thought to have most benefit from cellular therapy.
