One of the objectives of this work is the ana1ysis of planar structures using the PBG (photonic Bandgap), a new method of controlling propagation of electromagnetic waves in devices with dielectrics. Here the basic theory of these structures will be presented, as well as applications and determination of certain parameters. In this work the analysis will be performed concerning PBG structures, including the basic theory and applications in planar structures. Considerations are made related to the implementation of devices. Here the TTL (Transverse Transmission Line) method is employed, characterized by the simplicity in the treatment of the equations that govern the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the structure. In this method, the fields in x and z are expressed in function of the fields in the traverse direction y in FTD (Fourier Transform Domain). This method is useful in the determination of the complex propagation constant with application in high frequency and photonics. In this work structures will be approached in micrometric scale operating in frequencies in the range of T erahertz, a first step for operation in the visible spectra. The mathematical basis are approached for the determination of the electromagnetic fields in the structure, based on the method L TT taking into account the dimensions approached in this work. Calculations for the determination of the constant of complex propagation are also carried out. The computational implementation is presented for high frequencies. at the first time the analysis is done with base in open microstrip lines with semiconductor substrate. Finally, considerations are made regarding applications ofthese devices in the area of telecommunications, and suggestions for future

Recently, planar antennas have been studied due to their characteristics as well as the advantages that they offers when compared with another types of antennas. In the mobile communications area, the need for this kind of antennas have became each time bigger due to the intense increase of the mobile communications this sector. That needs of antennas which operate in multifrequency and wide bandwidth. The microstrip antennas presents narrow bandwidth due the loss in the dielectric generated by radiation. Another limitation is the radiation pattern degradation due the generation of surface waves in the substrate. In this work some used techniques to minimize the disadvantages (previously mentioned) of the use of microstrip antennas are presented, those are: substrates with PBG material - Photonic Bandgap, multilayer antennas and with stacked patches. The developed analysis in this work used the TTL - Transverse Transmission Line method in the domain of Fourier transform, that uses a component of propagation in the y direction (transverse to the direction real of propagation z), treating the general equations of electric and magnetic field as functions of Ey and Hy. One of the advantages of this method is the simplification of the field equations. therefore the amount of equations lesser must the fields in directions x and z be in function of components Ey and Hy. It will be presented an brief study of the main theories that explain the superconductivity phenomenon. The BCS theory. London Equations and Two Fluids model will be the theories that will give support the application of the superconductors in the microfita antennas. The inclusion of the superconductor patch is made using the resistive complex contour condition. This work has as objective the application of the TTL method to microstrip structures with single and multilayers of rectangular patches, to obtaining the resonance frequency and radiation pattern of each structure

The Homogenization theory will be applied to obtaining the effective permittivity for s and p polarizations of the substrate composed of PBG material. Numerical results for the triangular and rectangular antennas with single layer, multilayers resonators with triangular and rectangular patches are presented (in photonic and isotropic substrates). Conclusions and suggestions for continuity of this work are presented

Design and development of a photonic bandgap (PBG)-assisted shared-aperture dual-band orthogonal aperture-fed rectangular microstrip patch antenna element, which is suitable for a portable very small aperture terminal (VSAT), are presented in this paper. The dual-band dual-polarized antenna element achieves 21% input impedance bandwidth at the S- and C-bands. A comparison of the antenna with and without 2D PBG grids shows that the inclusion of PBG structures (PBGSs) improves the antenna performances. (c) 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

We report two recent studies dealing with the evolution of parabolic pulses in normally dispersive fibres. On the one hand, the nonlinear reshaping from a Gaussian intensity profile towards the asymptotic parabolic shape is experimentally investigated in a Raman amplifier. On the other hand, the significant impact of the fourth order dispersion on a passive propagation is theoretically discussed: we numerically demonstrate flat-top, coherent supercontinuum generation in an all-normal dispersion-flattened photonic crystal fiber. This shape is associated to a strong reshaping of the temporal profile what becomes triangular.

Optical properties of a two-dimensional square-lattice photonic crystal are systematically investigated within the partial bandgap through anisotropic characteristics analysis and numerical simulation of field pattern. Using the plane-wave expansion method and Hellmann-Feynman theorem, the relationships between the incident and refracted angles for both phase and group velocities are calculated to analyze light propagation from air to photonic crystals. Three kinds of flat slab focusing are summarized and demonstrated by numerical simulations using the multiple scattering method. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America

Silicon is now firmly established as a high performance photonic material. Its only weakness is the lack of a native electrically driven light emitter that operates CW at room temperature, exhibits a narrow linewidth in the technologically important 1300-1600 nm wavelength window, is small and operates with low power consumption. Here, an electrically pumped all-silicon nano light source around 1300-1600 nm range is demonstrated at room temperature. Using hydrogen plasma treatment, nano-scale optically active defects are introduced into silicon, which then feed the photonic crystal nanocavity to enhance the electrically driven emission in a device via Purcell effect. A narrow (Δλ=0.5 nm) emission line at 1515 nm wavelength with a power density of 0.4mW/cm2 is observed, which represents the highest spectral power density ever reported from any silicon emitter. A number of possible improvements are also discussed, that make this scheme a very promising light source for optical interconnects and other important silicon photonics applications. © 2012 by WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. We report the enhancement of sub-bandgap photoluminescence from silicon via the Purcell effect. We couple the defect emission from silicon, which is believed to be due to hydrogen incorporation into the lattice, to a photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavity. We observe an up to 300-fold enhancement of the emission at room temperature at 1550 nm, as compared to an unpatterned sample, which is then comparable to the silicon band-edge emission. We discuss the possibility of enhancing this emission even further by introducing additional defects by ion implantation, or by treating the silicon PhC nanocavity with hydrogen plasma. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

A new broadband filter, based on the high level bandgap in 1-D photonic crystals (PCs) of the form Si vertical bar air vertical bar Si vertical bar air vertical bar Si vertical bar air vertical bar Si vertical bar air vertical bar Si vertical bar air vertical bar Si is designed by the plane wave expansion method (PWEM) and the transfer matrix method (TMM) and fabricated by lithography. The optical response of this filter to normal-incident and oblique-incident light proves that utilizing the high-level bandgaps of PCs is an efficient method to lower the difficulties of fabricating PCs, increase the etching depth of semiconductor materials, and reduce the coupling loss at the interface between optical fibers and the PC device. The goal of this work is to analyze three-dimensional dispersive metallic photonic crystals (PCs) and to find a structure that can provide a bandgap and a high cutoff frequency. The determination of the band structure of a PC with dispersive materials is an expensive nonlinear eigenvalue problem; in this work we propose a rational-polynomial method to convert such a nonlinear eigenvalue problem into a linear eigenvalue problem. The spectral element method is extended to rapidly calculate the band structure of three-dimensional PCs consisting of realistic dispersive materials modeled by Drude and Drude-Lorentz models. Exponential convergence is observed in the numerical experiments. Numerical results show that, at the low frequency limit, metallic materials are similar to a perfect electric conductor, where the simulation results tend to be the same as perfect electric conductor PCs. Band structures of the scaffold structure and semi-woodpile structure metallic PCs are investigated. It is found that band structures of semi-woodpile PCs have a very high cutoff frequency as well as a bandgap between the lowest two bands and the higher bands.

In this report we give a summary of our work on the development of low-noise fiber-optic strain sensors. Three types of strain sensors were developed and were tested by attaching them to the bodies of acoustic guitars. The fibers are strained as the soundboards of the guitars vibrate. The resulting spectral shift of either a Fiber Bragg Grating or a fiber Fabry-Perot cavity is then used to record the sound of the instrument.

The microwave photonic responses of superstructured fiber Bragg gratings in combination with dispersive fiber are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The superstructured gratings are optimized, taking account of the spectral response of the broad-band source, Erbium-doped fiber amplifier, and optical tunable filter to achieve a filter response with sidelobe suppression of more than 60 dB. © 2004 IEEE.
