The conversion of dissipated heat into electricity is the basic principle of thermoelectricity. In this context, half-Heusler (HH) compounds are promising thermoelectric (TE) materials for waste heat recovery. They meet all the requirements for commercial TE applications, ranging from good efficiencies via environmentally friendliness to being low cost materials. This work focused on the TE properties of Ti0.3Zr0.35Hf0.35NiSn-based HH materials. This compound undergoes an intrinsic phase separation into a Ti-poor and Ti-rich HH phase during a rapid solidification process. The resulting dendritic microstructure causes a drastic reduction of the thermal conductivity, leading to higher TE efficiencies in these materials. The TE properties and temperature dependence of the phase-separated Ti0.3Zr0.35Hf0.35NiSn compound were investigated. The TE properties can be adjusted depending on the annealing treatment. The extension of annealing time for 21 days at 1000 °C revealed a reduction of the thermal conductivity and thus an enhancement of the TE performance in this sample. An increase of annealing temperature caused a change of the phase fraction ratio in favor of the Ti-rich phase, leading to an improvement of the electronic properties. rnInspired by the TE properties of the Ti0.3Zr0.35Hf0.35NiSn HH compound, the performance of different n- and p-type materials, realized via site substitution with donor and acceptor elements was examined. The fabrication of a TE n- and p-type material pair based on one starting compound can guarantee similar TE and mechanical properties and is enormous beneficial for device engineering. As donor dopants V, Nb and Sb were tested. Depending on the lattice position small doping levels were sufficient to attain distinct improvement in their TE efficiency. Acceptor-induced doping with Sc, Y and Co caused a change in the transport behavior from n- to p- type conduction, revealing the highest Seebeck coefficients obtained in the MNiSn system. rnThen, the long-term stability of an exemplary n- and p-type HH compound was proven. Surprisingly, the dendritic microstructure can be maintained even after 500 cycles (1700 h) from 373 to 873 K. The TE performance of both n- and p-type materials showed no significant change under the long-term treatment, indicating the extraordinary temperature stability of these compounds. Furthermore both HH materials revealed similar temperature-dependence of their mechanical properties. This work demonstrates the excellent suitability of phase-separated HH materials for future TE applications in the moderate temperature range.rn

Thermoelectric generators (TEG) are solid state devices and are able to convert thermal energy directly into electricity and thus could play an important role in waste heat recovery in the near future. Half-Heusler (HH) compounds with the general formula MNiSn (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) built a promising class of materials for these applications because of their high Seebeck coefficients, their environmentally friendliness and their cost advantage over conventional thermoelectric materials.rnrnMuch of the existing literature on HH deals with thermoelectric characterization of n-type MNiSn and p-type MCoSb compounds. Studies on p-type MNiSn-based HHs are far fewer in number. To fabricate high efficient thermoelectric modules based on HH compounds, high performance p-type MNiSn systems need to be developed that are compatible with the existing n-type HH compounds. This thesis explores synthesis strategies for p-type MNiSn based compounds. In particular, the efficacy of transition metals (Sc, La) and main group elements (Al, Ga, In) as acceptor dopants on the Sn-site in ZrNiSn, was investigated by evaluating their thermoelectric performance. The most promising p-type materials could be achieved with transition metal dopants, where the introduction of Sc on the Zr side, yielded the highest Seebeck coefficient in a ternary NiSn-based HH compound up to this date. Hall effect and band gap measurements of this system showed, that the high mobility of minority carrier electrons dominate the transport properties at temperatures above 500 K. It could be shown that this is the reason, why n-type HH are successful TE materials for high temperature applications, and that p-types are subjected to bipolar effects which will lead to diminished thermoelectric efficiencies at high temperatures.rnrnTo complement the experimental investigations on different metal dopants and their influence on the TE properties of HH compounds, numerical solutions to the Boltzmann transport equation were used to predict the optimum carrier concentration where the maximum TE efficiency occurs for p-type HH compounds. The results for p-type samples showed that can not be treated within a simple parabolic band model approach, due to bipolar and multi-band effects.rnrnThe parabolic band model is commonly used for bulk TE materials. It is most accurate when the transport properties are dominated by one single carrier type. Since the transport properties of n-type HH are dominated by only one carrier type (high mobility electrons), it could be shown, that the use of a simple parabolic band model lead to a successful prediction of the optimized carrier concentration and thermoelectric efficiency in n-type HH compounds. rn

Barium Cerate (BaCeO3) is perovskite type structure of ABO3, wherein A and B are metal cations. These materials, or doped, have been studied by having characteristics that make them promising for the application in fuel cells solid oxide, hydrogen and oxygen permeation, as catalysts, etc .. However, as the ceramic materials mixed conductivity have been produced by different synthesis methods, some conditions directly influence the final properties, one of the most important doping Site B, which may have direct influence on the crystallite size, which in turn directly influences their catalytic activity. In this study, perovskite-type (BaCexO3) had cerium gradually replaced by praseodymium to obtain ternary type materials BaCexPr1-xO3 and BaPrO3 binaries. These materials were synthesized by EDTA/Citrate complexing method and the material characterized via XRD, SEM and BET for the identification of their structure, morphology and surface area. Moreover were performed on all materials, catalytic test in a fixed bed reactor for the identification of that person responsible for complete conversion of CO to CO2 at low operating temperature, which step can be used as the subsequent production of synthesis gas (CO + H2) from methane oxidation. In the present work the crystalline phase having the orthorhombic structure was obtained for all compositions, with a morphology consisting of agglomerated particles being more pronounced with increasing praseodymium in the crystal structure. The average crystal size was between 100 nm and 142,2 nm. The surface areas were 2,62 m²g-1 for the BaCeO3 composition, 3,03 m²g-1 to BaCe0,5Pr0,5O3 composition and 2,37 m²g-1 to BaPrO3 composition. Regarding the catalytic tests, we can conclude that the optimal flow reactor operation was 50 ml / min and the composition regarding the maximum rate of conversion to the lowest temperature was BaCeO3 to 400° C. Meanwhile, there was found that the partially replaced by praseodymium, cerium, there was a decrease in the catalytic activity of the material.

A rapid quenching technique with a quenching rate of roughly 106°C/sec has been developed to prepare glassy samples of ABO3 type materials. Glasses of potassium lithium niobate have been prepared by this technique. These glasses have been characterized by x-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry techniques to assess the quality of the obtained glasses.

Cultures originally identified as Drechslera australiensis, from seeds of Chloris gayana in Japan, were the basis for Tsuda and Ueyama's new combination, Bipolaris australiensis, and its associated sexual morph Pseudocochliobolus australiensis. By studying ex-type materials of both Drechslera australiensis, which was originally isolated from seeds of Oryza sativa in Australia, and Pseudocochliobolus australiensis, we show by morphological and molecular phylogenetic analysis that these two specimens represent different species. A novel, cost effective,environment-friendly and energetically beneficial alternative method for the synthesis of giant dielectric pseudo-perovskite material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) is presented. The method involved auto-combustion of an aqueous precursor solution in oxygen atmosphere with the help of external fuels and is capable of producing high amount of CCTO at ultra-low temperature, in the combustion residue itself. The amount of phase generated was observed to be highly dependent on the combustion process i.e. on the nature and amount of external-fuels added for combustion. Two successful fuel combinations capable of producing reasonably higher amount of the desired compound were investigated. On a structural characterization grain size was observed to decrease drastically to nano-dimension compared to submicron-size that was obtained in a traditional sol-gel combustion and subsequent cacination method. Therefore, the method reported can produce nano-crystalline CaCu3Ti4O12 ceramic matrix at an ultra-low temperature and is expected to be applicable for other multifunctional perovskite oxide materials.

In this paper we study the effective electron mass (EEM) in Nano wires (NWs) of nonlinear optical materials on the basis of newly formulated electron dispersion relation by considering all types of anisotropies of the energy band constants within the framework of k . p formalism. The results for NWs of III-V, ternary and quaternary semiconductors form special cases of our generalized analysis. We have also investigated the EEM in NWs of Bi, IV-VI, stressed Kane type materials, Ge, GaSb and Bi2Te3 by formulating the appropriate 1D dispersion law in each case by considering the influence of energy band constants in the respective cases. It has been found that the 1D EEM in nonlinear optical materials depend on the size quantum numbers and Fermi energy due to the anisotropic spin orbit splitting constant and the crystal field splitting respectively. The 1D EEM is Bi, IV-VI, stressed Kane type semiconductors and Ge also depends on both the Fermi energy and the size quantum numbers which are the characteristic features of such NWs. The EEM increases with increase in concentration and decreasing film thickness and for ternary and quaternary compounds the EEM increases with increase in alloy composition. Under certain special conditions all the results for all the materials get simplified into the well known parabolic energy bands and thus confirming the compatibility test.

In the family of iron-based superconductors, LaFeAsO-type materials possess the simplest electronic structure due to their pronounced two-dimensionality. And yet they host superconductivity with the highest transition temperature T-c approximate to 55K. Early theoretical predictions of their electronic structure revealed multiple large circular portions of the Fermi surface with a very good geometrical overlap (nesting), believed to enhance the pairing interaction and thus superconductivity. The prevalence of such large circular features in the Fermi surface has since been associated with many other iron-based compounds and has grown to be generally accepted in the field. In this work we show that a prototypical compound of the 1111-type, SmFe0.92Co0.08AsO, is at odds with this description and possesses a distinctly different Fermi surface, which consists of two singular constructs formed by the edges of several bands, pulled to the Fermi level from the depths of the theoretically predicted band structure by strong electronic interactions. Such singularities dramatically affect the low-energy electronic properties of the material, including superconductivity. We further argue that occurrence of these singularities correlates with the maximum superconducting transition temperature attainable in each material class over the entire family of iron-based superconductors.

Compliant foams are usually characterized by a wide range of desirable mechanical properties. These properties include viscoelasticity at different temperatures, energy absorption, recoverability under cyclic loading, impact resistance, and thermal, electrical, acoustic and radiation-resistance. Some foams contain nano-sized features and are used in small-scale devices. This implies that the characteristic dimensions of foams span multiple length scales, rendering modeling their mechanical properties difficult. Continuum mechanics-based models capture some salient experimental features like the linear elastic regime, followed by non-linear plateau stress regime. However, they lack mesostructural physical details. This makes them incapable of accurately predicting local peaks in stress and strain distributions, which significantly affect the deformation paths. Atomistic methods are capable of capturing the physical origins of deformation at smaller scales, but suffer from impractical computational intensity. Capturing deformation at the so-called meso-scale, which is capable of describing the phenomenon at a continuum level, but with some physical insights, requires developing new theoretical approaches.
A fundamental question that motivates the modeling of foams is ‘how to extract the intrinsic material response from simple mechanical test data, such as stress vs. strain response?’ A 3D model was developed to simulate the mechanical response of foam-type materials. The novelty of this model includes unique features such as the hardening-softening-hardening material response, strain rate-dependence, and plastically compressible solids with plastic non-normality. Suggestive links from atomistic simulations of foams were borrowed to formulate a physically informed hardening material input function. Motivated by a model that qualitatively captured the response of foam-type vertically aligned carbon nanotube (VACNT) pillars under uniaxial compression [2011,“Analysis of Uniaxial Compression of Vertically Aligned Carbon Nanotubes,” J. Mech.Phys. Solids, 59, pp. 2227–2237, Erratum 60, 1753–1756 (2012)], the property space exploration was advanced to three types of simple mechanical tests: 1) uniaxial compression, 2) uniaxial tension, and 3) nanoindentation with a conical and a flat-punch tip. The simulations attempt to explain some of the salient features in experimental data, like
1) The initial linear elastic response.
2) One or more nonlinear instabilities, yielding, and hardening.
The model-inherent relationships between the material properties and the overall stress-strain behavior were validated against the available experimental data. The material properties include the gradient in stiffness along the height, plastic and elastic compressibility, and hardening. Each of these tests was evaluated in terms of their efficiency in extracting material properties. The uniaxial simulation results proved to be a combination of structural and material influences. Out of all deformation paths, flat-punch indentation proved to be superior since it is the most sensitive in capturing the material properties.

Recent development of solution processable organic semiconductors delineates the emergence of a new generation of air-stable, high performance p- and n-type materials. This makes it indeed possible for printed organic complementary circuits (CMOS) to be used in real applications. The main technical bottleneck for organic CMOS to be adopted as the next generation organic integrated circuit is how to deposit and pattern both p- and n-type semiconductor materials with high resolutions at the same time. It represents a significant technical challenge, especially if it can be done for multiple layers without mask alignment. In this paper, we propose a one-step self-aligned fabrication process which allows the deposition and high resolution patterning of functional layers for both p- and n-channel thin film transistors (TFTs) simultaneously. All the dimensional information of the device components is featured on a single imprinting stamp, and the TFT-channel geometry, electrodes with different work functions, p- and n-type semiconductors and effective gate dimensions can all be accurately defined by one-step imprinting and the subsequent pattern transfer process. As an example, we have demonstrated an organic complementary inverter fabricated by 3D imprinting in combination with inkjet printing and the measured electrical characteristics have validated the feasibility of the novel technique. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Using the first-principles methods, we study the electronic structure, intrinsic and extrinsic defects doping in transparent conducting oxides CuGaO2. Intrinsic defects, acceptor-type and donor-type extrinsic defects in their relevant charge state are considered. The calculation result show that copper vacancy and oxygen interstitial are the relevant defects in CuGaO2. In addition, copper vacancy is the most efficient acceptor. Substituting Be for Ga is the prominent acceptor, and substituting Ca for Cu is the prominent donors in CuGaO2. Our calculation results are expected to be a guide for preparing n-type and p-type materials in CuGaO2.

Using first-principles methods, we studied the extrinsic defects doping in transparent conducting oxides CuMO2 (M=Sc, Y). We chose Be, Mg, Ca, Si, Ge, Sn as extrinsic defects to substitute for M and Cu atoms. By systematically calculating the impurity formation energy and transition energy level, we find that Be-Cu is the most prominent extrinsic donor and Ca-M is the prominent extrinsic acceptor. In addition, we find that Mg atom substituting for Sc is the most prominent extrinsic acceptor in CuSCO2. Our calculation results are expected to be a guide for preparing n-type and p-type materials through extrinsic doping in CuMO2 (M=SC, y). (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
