The paper considers the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic mild solutions to some classes of first-order partial neutral functional-differential equations. Sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of almost automorphic mild solutions to the above-mentioned equations are obtained. As an application, a first-order boundary value problem arising in control systems is considered. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All fights reserved.

An extracellular polygalacturonase (PG) produced from Paecilomyces variotii was purified to homogeneity through two chromatography steps using DEAE-Fractogel and Sephadex G-100. The molecular weight of P. variotii PG was 77,300 Da by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE. PG had isoelectric point of 4.37 and optimum pH 4.0. PG was very stable from pH 3.0 to 6.0. The extent of hydrolysis of different pectins by the purified enzyme was decreased with an increase in the degree of esterification. PG had no activity toward non-pectic polysaccharides. The apparent K (m) and V (max) values for hydrolyzing sodium polypectate were 1.84 mg/mL and 432 A mu mol/min/mg, respectively. PG was found to have temperature optimum at 65 A degrees C and was totally stable at 45 A degrees C for 90 min. Half-life at 55 A degrees C was 50.6 min. Almost all the examined metal cations showed partial inhibitory effects under enzymatic activity, except for Na(+1), K(+1), and Co(+2) (1 mM) and Cu(+2) (1 and 10 mM).

Objective. We sought to evaluate the effects of immunosuppressant drugs (corticosteroid, cyclosporine [CsA], and tacrolimus [Tac]) on liver regeneration in growing animals submitted to 70% hepatectomy. Materials and Methods. Newborn and weaning rats were submitted to 70% hepatectomy receiving separately methylprednisolone, CsA, or Tac. All animals were sacrificed 24 hours after the procedure. The remnant liver lobes were subjected to histomorphometric analyses with determination of hepatocyte mitotic index. Results., Administration of immunosuppressants did not change the mitotic index of the regenerating liver in newborn animals. In weaning rats, methylprednisolone reduced the mitotic index (P = .01) and Tac caused a greater increase in this rate (P = .001). CsA had no effect on mitotic index. The number of hepatocyte mitoses in newborn animal livers was greater than that in weaning animal livers (P = .001). Conclusion. In situations in which intense, fast processes of liver regeneration are crucial, the advantages of the use of Tac must be considered, such as in pediatric transplant patients.

Introduction. Spontaneous spinal epidural hematoma (SEH) represents 0.3-0.9% of spinal epidural space-occupying lesions, and most surgeons advocate aggressive and early surgical intervention. In. this paper we describe a patient with SEH with sudden paraplegia. Case report. This 30-year-old man had experienced one prior episode of sudden dorsal pain two days before the current admission and while he waited medical attendance, his legs suddenly became weak, and immediately afterwards, he became completely paraplegic in minutes. The patient had complete paraplegia, analgesia below the T4 level and urinary retention. He had no anticoagulant agent and no coagulopathic disease. He was submitted to computerized tomography that demonstrated a dorsally located epidural hematoma extending from the T3 to the T6 level with spinal cord compression. A laminectomy from T3 to T7 was performed four hours after the onset of the symptom. In postoperative time the patient presented the partial sensorial recovery and motor force grade II. The patient was directed to a neurorehabilitation program and in the last medical evaluation he presented recovery for motor grade III-IV without pain. Conclusion. The SHE is rare, with severe neurological consequences for patients and early surgical treatment persist as essential for motor recovery.

This study aimed to elucidate electrophysiological and cortical mechanisms involved in anticipatory actions when 23 healthy right-handed subjects had to catch a free falling object by qEEG gamma-band (30-100 Hz). It is involved in cognitive processes, memory, spatial/temporal and proprioceptive factors. Our hypothesis is that an increase in gamma coherence in frontal areas will be observed during moment preceding ball drop, due to their involvement in attention, planning, selection of movements, preparation and voluntary control of action and in central areas during moment after ball drop, due to their involvement in motor preparation, perception and execution of movement. However, through a paired t-test, we found an increase in gamma coherence for F3-F4 electrode pair during moment preceding ball drop and confirmed our hypothesis for C3-C4 electrode pair. We conclude that gamma plays an important role in reflecting binding of several brain areas in a complex motor task as observed in our results. Moreover, for selection of movements, preparation and voluntary control of action, motor preparation, perception and execution of movement, the integration of somatosensory and visual information is mandatory. Viability and functional results of a segment replantation depend on the prevention of deleterious effects of ischemia. Prolonged ischemia leads to alterations in the microcirculation: thrombosis, edema, production of oxygen free radicals, and platelet aggregation. The effect of IIb-IIIa glycoprotein inhibitors was tested in a partial limb amputation model submitted to warm ischemia. The male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: G1 with 0 hours of ischemia and saline (n = 20), G2 with 6 hours of ischemia and saline (n = 24), G3 with 6 hours of ischemia and abciximab (n = 23), and G4 with 6 hours of ischemia and tirofiban (n = 29). The limbs were observed for 7 days and classified as viable or nonviable. Viability, and mortality rates were obtained and analyzed by Q-square and Fisher exact tests (p < 0.05). The viability rates were 100% (G1), 30% (G2), 77.78% (G3), and 80.95% (G4). G2 was statistically different from G1, G3, and G4. G1, G3, and G4 were not statistically different. Transoperative and postoperative mortalities were not statistically different. The administration of abciximab and tirofiban improved limb salvage after ischemia and reperfusion and did not modify mortality rates significantly.

Sm14 and paramyosin are two major Schistosoma mansoni vaccine candidate antigens. Recently, we have identified Sm14 and paramyosin epitopes that are recognized by T cells of resistant individuals living in endemic areas for schistosomiasis. Herein, mice were immunized with these peptides separately or in association in order to evaluate their vaccine potential. Immunization of mice with Sm14 peptides alone or mixed with paramyosin peptides was able to induce 26%-36.7% or 28%-29.2% of worm burden reduction, 67% or 46% of intestinal eggs reduction and also 54%-61% or 43%-52% of liver pathology reduction, respectively. Protection was associated with a Th1 type of immune response induced by Sm14 peptide immunization. In contrast, paramyosin peptide vaccination did not engender protective immunity or liver pathology reduction and immunization was associated with a Th2 type of immune response. A robust semi-implicit central partial difference algorithm for the numerical solution of coupled stochastic parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) is described. This can be used for calculating correlation functions of systems of interacting stochastic fields. Such field equations can arise in the description of Hamiltonian and open systems in the physics of nonlinear processes, and may include multiplicative noise sources. The algorithm can be used for studying the properties of nonlinear quantum or classical field theories. The general approach is outlined and applied to a specific example, namely the quantum statistical fluctuations of ultra-short optical pulses in chi((2)) parametric waveguides. This example uses a non-diagonal coherent state representation, and correctly predicts the sub-shot noise level spectral fluctuations observed in homodyne detection measurements. It is expected that the methods used wilt be applicable for higher-order correlation functions and other physical problems as well. A stochastic differencing technique for reducing sampling errors is also introduced. This involves solving nonlinear stochastic parabolic PDEs in combination with a reference process, which uses the Wigner representation in the example presented here. A computer implementation on MIMD parallel architectures is discussed. (C) 1997 Academic Press.

is study examined the social adaptation of children with mild intellectual disability who were either (a) partially integrated into regular primary school classes, or (b) full-time in separate classes, All of the children were integrated in sport and play activities with the whole school. Consistent with previous research, children with intellectual disability were less socially accepted than were a matched group of control children. Children in partially integrated classes received more play nominations than those in separate classes, brit there was no greater acceptance as a best friend. On teachers' reports, disabled children had higher levels of inappropriate social behaviours, but there was no significant difference in appropriate behaviours. Self-assessments by integrated children were more negative than those by children in separate classes, and their peer-relationship satisfaction was lower. Ratings by disabled children of their satisfaction with peer relationships were associated with ratings of appropriate social skills by themselves and their teachers, and with self-ratings of negative behaviour. The study confirmed that partial integration can have negative consequences for children with an intellectual disability.

1. Evidence for a 'putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor' originated over 20 years ago when cardiostimulant effects were observed to nonconventional partial agonists, These agonists were originally described as beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptor antagonists; however, they cause cardiostimulant effects at much higher concentrations than those required to block beta(1)- and beta(2)-adrenoceptors. Cardiostimulant effects of non-conventional partial agonists have been observed in mouse, rat, guinea-pig, cat, ferret and human heart tissues, 2. The receptor is expressed in several heart regions, including the sinoatrial node, atrium and ventricle, 3. The receptor is resistant to blockade by most antagonists that possess high affinity for beta(1)- and beta(2)- adrenoceptors, but is blocked with moderate affinity by (-)-bupranolol and CGP 20712A. 4. The receptor is pharmacologically distinct from the beta(3)-adrenoceptor. Micromolar concentrations of beta(3)-adrenoceptor agonists have no agonist or blocking activity, The receptor is also resistant to blockade by a beta(3)-adrenoceptor-selective antagonist. 5. The receptor mediates increases in cAMP levels and cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PK) A activity in cardiac tissues. Phosphodiesterase inhibition potentiates the positive chronotropic and inotropic effects of non-conventional partial agonists. 6. The receptor mediates hastening of atrial and ventricular relaxation, which is consistent with involvement of a cAMP-dependent pathway. 7. The non-conventional partial agonist (-)-[H-3]-CGP 12177A labels the cardiac putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor, Non-conventional partial agonists compete for binding with affinities that are closely similar to their agonist potencies, Catecholamines compete for binding in a stereoselective manner with a rank order of affinity of (-)-R0363 > (-)-isoprenaline > (-)-noradrenaline greater than or equal to (-)-adrenaline much greater than (-)-isoprenaline, suggesting that catecholamines can interact with the receptor. 8. The putative beta(4)-adrenoceptor appears to be coupled to the G(s)-adenylyl cyclase system, which could serve as a guide to its future cloning, Activation of the receptor may plausibly improve diastolic function but could also mediate arrhythmias.

Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is an autoimmune dermatosis that may evolve to severely compromise the skin and/or mucosa. Autoantibodies directed against epithelial cadherins, such as desmogleins 1 and 3, lead to acantholysis and culminate in blister formation. Involvement of the oral mucosa is common, but other squamous stratified epithelia may also be the target of the autoimmune aggression. We report a woman with PV that was in partial remission, who developed an unusual acute phenomenon, known as oesophagitis dissecans superficialis.

Twenty-four parents of oppositional preschoolers were randomly assigned to either a self-directed behavioral family intervention condition (SD) or to a waitlist control group (WL). The self-directed parent training program based on self-regulation principles, consisted of a written information package and weekly telephone consultations for 10 weeks. At posttest, in comparison to the WL group, children in the SD group had lower levels of behavior problems on parent report measures of child behavior. At posttreatment, parents in the SD condition reported increased levels of parenting competence and lower levels of dysfunctional parenting practices as compared to parents in the WL condition. In addition, mothers reported lower levels of anxiety, depression, and stress as compared to mothers in the WL condition at posttreatment. Using mother's reports, gains in child behavior and parenting practices achieved at posttreatment were maintained at 4-month follow-up.
