In this work, plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) treatments of carbon fibers (CFs) were performed in order to induce modifications of chemical and physical properties of the CF surface aimed to improve the performance of thermoplastic composite. The samples to be treated were immersed in nitrogen or air glow discharge plasma and pulsed at −3.0 kV for 2.0, 5.0, 10.0, and 15.0 min. After PIII processing, the specimens were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). After CFs treatments, the CF/Polypropylene (PP) composites were produced by hot pressing method. Surface morphology of as-received CFs exhibited some scratches aligned along the fibers due to the fiber manufacturing process. After both treatments, these features became deeper, and also, a number of small particles nonuniformly distributed on the fiber surface can be observed. These particles are product of CF surface sputtering during the PIII treatment, which removes the epoxy layer that covers as-received samples. AFM analyses of CF samples treated with nitrogen depicted a large increase of the surface roughness (Rrms value approximately six times higher than that of the untreated sample). The increase of the roughness was also observed for samples treated by air PIII. Raman spectra of all samples presented the characteristic D- and G-bands at approximately 1355 and 1582 cm−1, respectively. Analysis of the surface chemical composition provided by the XPS showed that nitrogen and oxygen were incorporated onto the surface. The polar radicals formed on the surface lead to increasing of the CF surface energy. Both the modification of surface roughness and the surface oxidation contributed for the enhancement of CF adhesion to the polymeric matrix. These features were confirmed ... Over the last three decades, sensors based on the phenomenon of surface plasmon resonance have proven particularly suitable for real time thin film characterization, gas detection, biomolecular interaction examination and to supplement electrochemical methods. Systems based on prism coupling have been combined with fluorescence detection under the name of surface plasmon fluorescence spectroscopy to increase sensitivity even further. Alternatively, metal gratings can be employed to match photons for plasmon resonance. The real time monitoring of binding reactions not yet been reported in the combination of fluorescence detection and grating coupling. Grating-based systems promise more competitive products, because of reduced operating costs, and offer benefits for device engineering. This thesis is comprised of a comprehensive study of the suitability of grating coupling for fluorescence based analyte detection. Fundamental properties of grating coupled surface plasmon fluorescence spectroscopy are described, as well as issues related to the commercial realization of the method. Several new experimental techniques are introduced and demonstrated in order to optimize performance in certain areas and improve upon capabilities in respect to prism-based systems. Holographically fabricated gratings are characterized by atomic force microscopy and optical methods, aided by simulations and profile parameters responsible for efficient coupling are analyzed. The directional emission of fluorophores immobilized on a grating surface is studied in detail, including the magnitude and geometry of the fluorescence emission pattern for different grating constants and polarizations. Additionally, the separation between the minimum of the reflected intensity and the maximum fluorescence excitation position is examined. One of the key requirements for the commercial feasibility of grating coupling is the cheap and faithful mass production of disposable samples from a given master grating. The replication of gratings is demonstrated by a simple hot embossing method with good reproducibility to address this matter. The in-situ fluorescence detection of analyte immobilization and affinity measurements using grating coupling are described for the first time. The physical factors related to the sensitivity of the technique are assessed and the lower limit of detection of the technique is determined for an exemplary assay. Particular attention is paid to the contribution of bulk fluorophores to the total signal in terms of magnitude and polarization of incident and emitted light. Emission from the bulk can be a limiting factor for experiments with certain assay formats. For that reason, a novel optical method, based on the modulation of both polarization and intensity of the incident beam, is introduced and demonstrated to be capable of eliminating this contribution.

Turbulent energy dissipation is presented in the theoretical context of the famous Kolmogorov theory, formulated in 1941. Some remarks and comments about this theory help the reader understand the approach to turbulence study, as well as give some basic insights to the problem. A clear distinction is made amongst dissipation, pseudo-dissipation and dissipation surrogates. Dissipation regulates how turbulent kinetic energy in a flow gets transformed into internal energy, which makes this quantity a fundamental characteristic to investigate in order to enhance our understanding of turbulence. The dissertation focuses on experimental investigation of the pseudo-dissipation. Indeed this quantity is difficult to measure as it requires the knowledge of all the possible derivatives of the three dimensional velocity field. Once considering an hot-wire technique to measure dissipation we need to deal with surrogates of dissipation, since not all the terms can be measured. The analysis of surrogates is the main topic of this work. In particular two flows, the turbulent channel and the turbulent jet, are considered. These canonic flows, introduced in a brief fashion, are often used as a benchmark for CFD solvers and experimental equipment due to their simple structure. Observations made in the canonic flows are often transferable to more complicated and interesting cases, with many industrial applications. The main tools of investigation are DNS simulations and experimental measures. DNS data are used as a benchmark for the experimental results since all the components of dissipation are known within the numerical simulation. The results of some DNS were already available at the start of this thesis, so the main work consisted in reading and processing the data. Experiments were carried out by means of hot-wire anemometry, described in detail on a theoretical and practical level. The study of DNS data of a turbulent channel at Re=298 reveals that the traditional surrogate can be improved Consequently two new surrogates are proposed and analysed, based on terms of the velocity gradient that are easy to measure experimentally. We manage to find a formulation that improves the accuracy of surrogates by an order of magnitude. For the jet flow results from a DNS at Re=1600 of a temporal jet, and results from our experimental facility CAT at Re=70000, are compared to validate the experiment. It is found that the ratio between components of the dissipation differs between DNS and experimental data. Possible errors in both sets of data are discussed, and some ways to improve the data are proposed.

The prevalence of Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines in Ghana suggests that the design must have a high user acceptance. The two key factors attributed to user acceptance of a VIP latrine over an alternative latrine design, such as the basic pit latrine, are its ability to remove foul odors and maintain low fly populations; both of which are a direct result of an adequate ventilation flow rate. Adequate ventilation for odorless conditions in a VIP latrine has been defined by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the World Bank, as an air flow rate equivalent to 6 air changes per hour (6 ACH) of the superstructure’s air volume. Additionally, the UNDP determined that the three primary factors that affect ventilation are: 1) wind passing over the mouth of the vent pipe, 2) wind passing into the superstructure, and 3) solar radiation on to the vent pipe. Previous studies also indicate that vent pipes with larger diameters increase flow rates, and the application of carbonaceous materials to the pit sludge reduces odor and insect prevalence. Furthermore, proper design and construction is critical for the correct functioning of VIP latrines. Under-designing could cause problems with odor and insect control; over-designing would increase costs unnecessarily, thereby making it potentially unaffordable for benefactors to independently construct, repair or replace a VIP latrine. The present study evaluated the design of VIP latrines used by rural communities in the Upper West Region of Ghana with the focus of assessing adequate ventilation for odor removal and insect control. Thirty VIP latrines from six communities in the Upper West Region of Ghana were sampled. Each VIP latrine’s ventilation flow rate and micro-environment was measured using a hot-wire anemometer probe and portable weather station for a minimum of four hours. To capture any temporal or seasonal variations in ventilation, ten of the latrines were sampled monthly over the course of three months for a minimum of 12 hours. A latrine usage survey and a cost analysis were also conducted to further assess the VIP latrine as an appropriated technology for sustainable development in the Upper West Region. It was found that the average air flow rate over the entire sample set was 11.3 m3/hr. The minimum and maximum air flow rates were 0.0 m3/hr and 48.0 m3/hr respectively. Only 1 of the 30 VIP latrines (3%) was found to have an air flow rate greater than the UNDP-defined odorless condition of 6 ACH. Furthermore, 19 VIP latrines (63%) were found to have an average air flow rate of less than half the flow rate required to achieve 6 ACH. The dominant factors affecting ventilation flow rate were wind passing over the mouth of the vent pipe and air buoyancy forces, which were the effect of differences in temperature between the substructure and the ambient environment. Of 76 usable VIP latrines found in one community, 68.4% were in actual use. The cost of a VIP latrine was found to be equivalent to approximately 12% of the mean annual household income for Upper West Region inhabitants.

The various meanings of discourse connectives like while and however are difficult to identify and annotate, even for trained human annotators. This problem is all the more important that connectives are salient textual markers of cohesion and need to be correctly interpreted for many NLP applications. In this paper, we suggest an alternative route to reach a reliable annotation of connectives, by making use of the information provided by their translation in large parallel corpora. This method thus replaces the difficult explicit reasoning involved in traditional sense annotation by an empirical clustering of the senses emerging from the translations. We argue that this method has the advantage of providing more reliable reference data than traditional sense annotation. In addition, its simplicity allows for the rapid constitution of large annotated datasets.

The problem of determination of the turbulence onset in natural convection on heated inclined plates in an air environment has been experimentally revisited. The transition has been detected by using hot wire velocity measurements. The onset of turbulence has been considered to take place where velocity fluctuations (measured through turbulence intensity) start to grow. Experiments have shown that the onset depends not only on the Grashof number defined in terms of the temperature difference between the heated plate and the surrounding air. A correlation between dimensionless Grashof and Reynolds numbers has been obtained, fitting quite well the experimental data.

The Bolund experiment has been reproduced in a neutral boundary layer wind tunnel (WT) at scale 1:115 for two Reynolds numbers. All the results have been obtained for an incoming flow from the 270o wind direction (transect B in the Bolund experiment jargon). Vertical scans of the velocity field are obtained using non-time resolved two components particle image velocimetry. Time-resolved velocity time series with a three component hot-wire probe have been also measured for transects at 2 and 5 m height and in the vertical transects at met masts M6, M3 and M8 locations. Special attention has been devoted to the detailed characterization of the inflow in order to reduce uncertainties in future comparisons with other physical and numerical simulations. Emphasis is placed on the analysis of spectral functions of the undisturbed flow and those of the flow above the island. The result?s reproducibility and trustworthiness have been addressed through redundancy measurements using particle image velocimetry, two and three components hot-wire anemometry. The bias in the prediction of the mean speed is similar to the one reported during the Bolund experiment by the physical modellers. However, certain reduction of the bias in the estimation of the turbulent kinetic energy is achieved. TheWT results of spectra and cosprectra have revealed a behaviour similar to the full-scale measurements in some relevant locations, showing that WT modelling can contribute to provide valid information about these important structural loading factors.

ABSTRACT Wind as an environmental factor may induce undesirable effects on vehicles and structures. The analysis of those effects has caught the attention of several researchers. Concerning the railway system, cross-wind induces aerodynamic loads on rolling stock that may increase the overturning risk of the vehicle, threatening its safe operation. Even the cable system responsible to provide the electric current required for the train traction, known as the railway overhead or catenary, is sensitive to the wind action. In fact, the interaction between the unsteady aerodynamic forces and the railway overhead may trigger the development of undamped oscillations due to galloping phenomena. The inclusion of windbreaks upstream the area that needs wind protection is a simple mean to palliate the undesirable effects caused by the wind action. Although the presence of this wind protection devices reduces the wind speed downstream, they also modify the flow properties inside their wake. This modification on the flow characteristics may ease the apparition of the galloping phenomena on flexible structures, such as the railway overhead. This two opposite effects require to maintain a global perspective on the analysis of the influence of the windbreak presence. In the present document, a multidisciplinary analysis on the effect induced by windbreaks on several railways subsystems is conducted. On the one hand, a set of wind tunnel tests is conducted to assess the improvement on the rolling stock lateral stability. The qualitative estimation of the shelter effect, as function of the windbreak height, is established through the pressure distribution measured on the surface of a two-dimensional train model. On the other hand, the flow properties above the railway platform are assessed using the same set of windbreaks. Two experimental techniques are used to measure the flow properties, hot-wire anemometry (HWA) and particle image velocimetry (PIV). In particular, the attention is focused on the flow characteristics on the contact wire location. A simplified analysis on the catenary oscillations due to galloping phenomena is conducted in the last part of the document. Both, the flow characterization performed via PIV and the aerodynamic properties of the contact wire cross-section are combined. In this manner, the risk of the aeroelastic instabilities on a railway overhead placed on a railway bridge is assessed through a practical application.

ABSTRACT This Doctoral dissertation has been focused to study the unsteady aerodynamic loads on bluff bodies. To this aim the following points have been identified and analyzed: -Characterization of the flow measured with different types of Pitot tubes and hot wire anemometer at unsteady flow conditions generated by a gust wind tunnel. -Design and integrating of the experimental setups required to measure the internal and external wind loads acting on bluff bodies at gusty wind flow conditions. -Implementation of semi-empirical mathematical models based on potential flow and relevant phenomenological theories to simulate the experimental results.-At various gusty flow conditions, extracting and analyzing the influence of parameters obtained from the developed theoretical models. -Empirical estimations are proposed to find out suitable values of the influencing parameters, by fitting the experimental and theoretically predicted results. The experimental setups are performed in an open circuit, closed test section, low speed wind tunnel, with a new sinusoidal gust generator mechanism concept, designed and built at the Instituto de Microgravedad “Ignacio Da Riva” of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, (IDR/UPM). The main characteristic of this wind tunnel is the ability to generate a flow with a uniform velocity profile and a sinusoidal time fluctuation of the speed. Experimental tests have been devoted to study the effect of unsteady flows on bluff bodies lying on the ground. Two theoretical models have been proposed to measure the external and internal pressure loads respectively. In order to meet the need of creating sinusoidal wind gusts to check the theoretical model predictions, the gust wind tunnel maximum flow speed and, gust frequency in the test section have been limited to 30 m/s and 10 Hz, respectively have been obtained. The test section is 0.39 m × 0.54 m, which is suitable to perform experiments with testing models. It is shown that, in the range of parameters explored, the experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical model predictions. Experimental tests have been performed to study the unsteady flow effects, which can help in clarifying the phenomenon of the external pressure loads on bluff bodies under gusty winds: and also to study internal pressure loads, which depend on the size of the venting holes of the building. Finally, the contribution of the unsteady flow terms in the theoretical model has been analyzed, and the pressure jumps due to the unsteady pressure losses through the venting holes have been characterized.
