Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles have found application as contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and as switchable drug delivery vehicles. Their stabilization as colloidal carriers remains a challenge. The potential of poly(ethylene imine)-g-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEGPEI) as stabilizer for iron oxide (γ-Fe₂O₃) nanoparticles was studied in comparison to branched poly(ethylene imine) (PEI). Carrier systems consisting of γ-Fe₂O₃-PEI and γ-Fe₂O₃-PEGPEI were prepared and characterized regarding their physicochemical properties including magnetic resonance relaxometry. Colloidal stability of the formulations was tested in several media and cytotoxic effects in adenocarcinomic epithelial cells were investigated. Synthesized γ-Fe₂O₃ cores showed superparamagnetism and high degree of crystallinity. Diameters of polymer-coated nanoparticles γ-Fe₂O₃-PEI and γ-Fe₂O₃-PEGPEI were found to be 38.7 ± 1.0 nm and 40.4 ± 1.6 nm, respectively. No aggregation tendency was observable for γ-Fe₂O₃-PEGPEI over 12 h even in high ionic strength media. Furthermore, IC₅₀ values were significantly increased by more than 10-fold when compared to γ-Fe₂O₃-PEI. Formulations exhibited r₂ relaxivities of high numerical value, namely around 160 mM⁻¹ s⁻¹. In summary, novel carrier systems composed of γ-Fe₂O₃-PEGPEI meet key quality requirements rendering them promising for biomedical applications, e.g. as MRI contrast agents.

Well-mixed blends of poly(ethylene) and poly(styrene) have been synthesized using supercritical carbon dioxide as a solvent. The morphology of the blends has been conclusively characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), Raman microprobe microscopy, and C-13 solid-state cross-polarization magic angle spinning NMR (C-13 CPMAS NMR). DSC measurements demonstrate that poly(styrene) in the blends resides solely in the amorphous regions of the poly(ethylene) matrix; however, corroborative evidence from the SAXS experiments shows that poly(styrene) resides within the interlamellar spaces. The existence of nanometer-sized domains of poly(styrene) was shown within a blend of poly(styrene) and poly(ethylene) when formed in supercritical carbon dioxide using Raman microprobe microscopy and C-13 CPMAS NMR spectroscopy coupled with a spin diffusion model. This contrasts with blends formed at ambient pressure in the absence of solvent, in which domains of poly(styrene) in the micrometer size range are formed. This apparent improved miscibility of the two components was attributed to better penetration of the monomer prior to polymerization and increased swelling of the polymer substrate by the supercritical carbon dioxide solvent.

Polybenzoxazine (PBA-a)/poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) blends were prepared by an in situ curing reaction of benzoxazine (BA-a) in the presence of PCL. Before curing, the benzoxazine (BA-a)/PCL blends are miscible, which was evidenced by the behaviors of single and composition-dependant glass transition temperature and equilibrium melting point depression. However, the phase separation induced by polymerization was observed after curing at elevated temperature. It was expected that after curing, the PBA-a/PCL blends would be miscible since the phenolic hydroxyls in the PBA-a molecular backbone have the potential to form inter- molecular hydrogen-bonding interactions with the carbonyls of PCL and thus would fulfil the miscibility of the blends. The resulting morphology of the blends prompted an investigation of the status of association between PBA-a and PCL under the curing conditions. Although Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed that there were intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions between PBA-a and PCL at room temperature, especially for the PCL-rich blends, the results of variable temperature FT-IR spectroscopy by the model compound indicate that the phenolic hydroxyl groups could not form efficient intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions at elevated temperatures, i.e., the phenolic hydroxyl groups existed mainly in the non-associated form in the system during curing. The results are valuable to understand the effect of curing temperature on the resulting morphology of the thermosetting blends. One of the main objectives of this study was to functionalise various rubbers (i.e. ethylene propylene copolymer (EP), ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM), and natural rubber (NR)) using functional monomers, maleic anhydride (MA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), via reactive processing routes. The functionalisation of the rubber was carried out via different reactive processing methods in an internal mixer. GMA was free-radically grafted onto EP and EPDM in the melt state in the absence and presence of a comonomer, trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TRlS). To optinuse the grafting conditions and the compositions, the effects of various paranleters on the grafting yields and the extent of side reactions were investigated. Precipitation method and Soxhlet extraction method was established to purifY the GMA modified rubbers and the grafting degree was determined by FTIR and titration. It was found that without TRlS the grafting degree of GMA increased with increasing peroxide concentration. However, grafting was low and the homopolymerisation of GMA and crosslinking of the polymers were identified as the main side reactions competing with the desired grafting reaction for EP and EPDM, respectively. The use of the tri-functional comonomer, TRlS, was shown to greatly enhance the GMA grafting and reduce the side reactions in terms of the higher GMA grafting degree, less alteration of the rheological properties of the polymer substrates and very little formation of polyGMA. The grafting mechanisms were investigated. MA was grafted onto NR using both thermal initiation and peroxide initiation. The results showed clearly that the reaction of MA with NR could be thermally initiated above 140°C in the absence of peroxide. At a preferable temperature of 200°C, the grafting degree was increased with increasing MA concentration. The grafting reaction could also be initiated with peroxide. It was found that 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-bis(ter-butylproxy) hexane (TIOI) was a suitable peroxide to initiate the reaction efficiently above I50°C. The second objective of the work was to utilize the functionalised rubbers in a second step to achieve an in-situ compatibilisation of blends based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), in particular, with GMA-grafted-EP and -EPDM and the reactive blending was carried out in an internal mixer. The effects of GMA grafting degree, viscosities of GMAgrafted- EP and -EPDM and the presence of polyGMA in the rubber samples on the compatibilisation of PET blends in terms of morphology, dynamical mechanical properties and tensile properties were investigated. It was found that the GMA modified rubbers were very efficient in compatibilising the PET blends and this was supported by the much finer morphology and the better tensile properties. The evidence obtained from the analysis of the PET blends strongly supports the existence of the copolymers through the interfacial reactions between the grafted epoxy group in the GMA modified rubber and the terminal groups of PET in the blends.

The effect of organically modified clay on the morphology, rheology and mechanical properties of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyamide 6 (PA6) blends (HDPE/PA6 = 75/25 parts) is studied. Virgin and filled blends were prepared by melt compounding the constituents using a twin-screw extruder. The influence of the organoclay on the morphology of the hybrid was deeply investigated by means of wide-angle X-ray diffractometry, transmission and scanning electron microscopies and quantitative extraction experiments. It has been found that the organoclay exclusively places inside the more hydrophilic polyamide phase during the melt compounding. The extrusion process promotes the formation of highly elongated and separated organoclay-rich PA6 domains. Despite its low volume fraction, the filled minor phase eventually merges once the extruded pellets are melted again, giving rise to a co-continuous microstructure. Remarkably, such a morphology persists for long time in the melt state. A possible compatibilizing action related to the organoclay has been investigated by comparing the morphology of the hybrid blend with that of a blend compatibilized using an ethylene–acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer as a compatibilizer precursor. The former remains phase separated, indicating that the filler does not promote the enhancement of the interfacial adhesion. The macroscopic properties of the hybrid blend were interpreted in the light of its morphology. The melt state dynamics of the materials were probed by means of linear viscoelastic measurements. Many peculiar rheological features of polymer-layered silicate nanocomposites based on single polymer matrix were detected for the hybrid blend. The results have been interpreted proposing the existence of two distinct populations of dynamical species: HDPE not interacting with the filler, and a slower species, constituted by the organoclay-rich polyamide phase, which slackened dynamics stabilize the morphology in the melt state. In the solid state, both the reinforcement effect of the filler and the co-continuous microstructure promote the enhancement of the tensile modulus. Our results demonstrate that adding nanoparticles to polymer blends allows tailoring the final properties of the hybrid, potentially leading to high-performance materials which combine the advantages of polymer blends and the merits of polymer nanocomposites.

Ethylene-propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) was functionalized with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) during melt processing by free radical grafting with peroxide initiation in the presence and absence of a reactive comonomer trimethylolpropane triacrylate (Tris). Increasing the peroxide concentration resulted in an increase in the GMA grafting yield, albeit the overall grafting level was low and was accompanied by higher degree of crosslinking of EPDM which was found to be the major competing reaction. The presence of Tris in the grafting system gave rise to higher grafting yield produced at a much lower peroxide concentration though the crosslinking reactions remained high but without the formation of GMA-homopolymer in either of the two systems. The use of these functionalized EPDM (f-EPDM) samples with PET as compatibilisers in binary and ternary blends of PET/EPDM/f-EPDM was evaluated. The influence of the different functionalisation routes of the rubber phase (in presence and absence of Tris) and the effect of the level of functionality and microstructure of the resultant f-EPDM on the extent of the interfacial reaction, morphology and mechanical properties was also investigated. It is suggested that the mechanical properties of the blends are strongly influenced by the performance of the graft copolymer, which is in turn, determined by the level of functionality, molecular structure of the functionalized rubber and the interfacial concentration of the graft copolymer across the interface. The cumulative evidence obtained from torque rheometry, scanning electron microscopy, SEM, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile mechanical tests and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) supports this. It was shown that binary and ternary blends prepared with f-EPDM in the absence of Tris and containing lower levels of g-GMA effected a significant improvement in mechanical properties. This increase, particularly in elongation to break, could be accounted for by the occurrence of a reaction between the epoxy groups of GMA and the hydroxyl/carboxyl end groups of PET that would result in a graft copolymer which could, most probably, preferentially locate at the interface, thereby acting as an 'emulsifier' responsible for decreasing the interfacial tension between the otherwise two immiscible phases. This is supported by results from FTIR analysis of the fractionated PET phase of these blends which confirm the formation of an interfacial reaction, DMA results which show a clear shift in the T s of the blend components and SEM results which reveal very fine morphology, suggesting effective compatibilisation that is concomitant with the improvement observed in their tensile properties. Although Tris has given rise to highest amount of g-GMA, it resulted in lower mechanical properties than the optimized blends produced in the absence of Tris. This was attributed to the difference in the microstructure of the graft and the level of functionality in these samples resulting in less favourable structure responsible for the coarser dispersion of the rubber phase observed by SEM, the lower extent of T shift of the PET phase (DMA), the lower height of the torque curve during reactive blending and FTIR analysis of the separated PET phase that has indicated a lower extent of the interfacial chemical reaction between the phases in this Tris-containing blend sample. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The present work demonstrates a novel strategy to synthesize orthogonally bio-engineered magnetonanohybrids (MNPs) through the design of versatile, biocompatible linkers whose structure includes: (i) a robust anchor to bind with metal-oxide surfaces; (ii) tailored surface groups to act as spacers and (iii) a general method to implement orthogonal functionalizations of the substrate via ``click chemistry''. Ligands that possess the synthetic generality of features (i)-(iii) are categorized as ``universal ligands''. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel, azido-terminated poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) silane that can easily self-assemble on MNPs through hetero-condensation between surface hydroxyl groups and the silane end of the ligand, and simultaneously provide multiple clickable sites for high density, chemoselective bio-conjugation. To establish the universal-ligand-strategy, we clicked alkyl-functionalized folate onto the surface of PEGylated MNPs. By further integrating a near-infrared fluorescent (NIRF) marker (Alexa-Fluor 647) with MNPs, we demonstrated their folate-receptor mediated internalization inside cancer cells and subsequent translocation into lysosomes and mitochondria. Ex vivo NIRF imaging established that the azido-PEG-silane developed in course of the study can effectively reduce the sequestration of MNPs by macrophage organs (viz. liver and spleen). These folate-PEG-MNPs were not only stealth and noncytotoxic but their dual optical and magnetic properties aided in tracking their whereabouts through combined magnetic resonance and optical imaging. Together, these results provided a strong motivation for the future use of the ``universal ligand'' strategy towards development of ``smart'' nanohybrids for theragnostic applications.

In this study, a minimum, reflection loss of 70 a was achieved, for a 6 mm thick shield (at 17.1 GHz frequency) employing a unique approach. This was accomplished by engineering nanostructures through decoration of magnetic nanopartides (nickel, Ni) onto graphene oxide (GO) sheets. Enhanced electromagnetic (EM) shielding was derived by selectively, localizing the nanoscopic particles in a specific phase of polyethylene (PE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends. By introduction of a conducting inclusion (like multiwall carbon nanotubes, MWNTs) together with the engineered nanostructures (nickel-decorated GO, (GO-Ni), the shielding efficiency can be enhanced significantly in contrast to physically mixing the particles in the blends. For instance, the composites showed a shielding efficiency >25 dB for a combination of MWNTS (3 wt %) and Ni nanoparticles (52 wt %) in PE/PEO blends. However, similar shielding effectiveness could be achieved for a combination of MWNTs (3 wt %) and 10 vol % of GO-Ni where in the effective concentration of Ni was only 19 wt %. The GO-Ni sheets facilitated in an efficient charge transfer as manifested from high electrical conductivity in the blends besides enhancing the permeability in the blends. It is envisioned that GO is simultaneously reduced in the process of synthesizing GO-Ni, and this facilitated in efficient charge transfer between the neighboring CNTs. More interestingly, the blends With MWNTs/GO-Ni attenuated the incoming EM radiation mostly by absorption. This study opens new avenues in designing polyolefin-based lightweight shielding materials by engineering nanostructures for numerous applications.

Molecular weight dependence of phase separation behavior of the Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)/Poly(ethylene oxide-block-dimethylsiloxane) (P(EO-b-DMS)) blends was investigated by both experimental and theoretical methods. The cloud point curves of PEO/P(EO-b-DMS) blends were obtained by turbidity method. Based on Sanchez-Lacombe lattice fluid theory (SLLFT), the adjustable parameter, epsilon*(12)/k (quantifying the interaction energy between different components), was evaluated by fitting the experimental data in phase diagrams. To calculate the spinodals, binodals, and the volume changes of mixing for these blends, three modified combining rules of the scaling parameters for the block copolymer were introduced.

Three Polypropylene/Poly(ethylene-co-propylene) (PP/EPR) in-reactor alloys produced by a two-stage slurry/gas polymerization had different ethylene contents and mechanical properties, which were achieved by controlling the copolymerization time. The three alloys were fractionated into five fractions via temperature rising dissolution fractionation (TRDF), respectively. The chain structures of the whole samples and their fractions were analyzed using high-temperature gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (C-13 NMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) techniques. These three in-reactor alloys mainly contained four portions: ethylenepropylene random copolymer (EPR), ethylene-propylene (EP) segmented and block copolymers, and propylene homopolymer. The increased copolymerization time caused the increased ethylene content of the sample. The weight percent of EPR, EP segmented and block copolymer also became higher.

BACKGROUND: Blocked isocyanate-functionalized polyolefins have great potential for use in semicrystalline polymer blends to obtain toughened polymers. In this study, poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) was blended with allyl N-[2-methyl-4-(2-oxohexahydroazepine-1 -carboxamido)phenyl] carbamate-functionalized poly(ethylene octene) (POE-g-AMPC).RESULTS: New peaks at 2272 and 1720 cm(-1), corresponding to the stretching vibrations of NCO and the carbonyl of NH-CO-N, respectively, in AMPC, appeared in the infrared spectrum of POE-g-AMPC. Both rheological and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results indicated a new copolymer was formed in the reactive blends. Compared to uncompatibilized PBT/POE blends, smaller dispersed particle sizes with narrower distribution were found in the compatibilized PBT/POE-g-AMPC blends. There was a marked increase in impact strength by about 10-fold over that of PBT/POE blends with the same rubber content and almost 30-fold higher than that of pure PBT when the POE-g-AMPC content was 25 wt%.

Finding a Suitable plasticizer for polylactide (PLA) is necessary to overcome its brittleness and enlarge its range of applications. In this study, commercial PLA was melt-blended with a new plasticizer, an ethylene glycol/propylene glycol random copolymer [poly(ethylene glycol-co-propylene glycol) (PEPG)] with a typical number-average molecular weight of 1.2 kDa and an ethylene glycol content of 78.7 mol %. The thermal properties, crystallization behavior, and mechanical properties of the quenched blends and the properties of the blends after storage for 2 months under the ambient conditions were investigated in detail. The advantage of using PEPG is that it does not crystallize at room temperature and has good compatibility with PLA. The quenched PLA/PEPG blends were homogeneous and amorphous systems. With an increase in the PEPG content (5-20%), the glass-transition temperature, tensile strength, and modulus of the blends decreased, whereas the elongation at break and crystallizability increased dramatically. The cold crystallization of PLA resulted in phase separation of the PLA/PEPG blends by annealing of the blends at the crystallization temperature.
