Flame-retardant poly(pyromellitic imide aryl phosphoramide-ester)s were synthesized by interfacial polycondensation of N,N?-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)pyromellitic diimide with aryl phosphoramidic dichlorides. The polymers were characterized by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The molecular composition was confirmed by elemental analysis. The thermal stability and flammability of the polymers were studied by thermogravimetry and limiting oxygen index, respectively. In order to study the efficiencies of catalytic moieties within and across dendrimer generations, partially and fully functionalized dendrimers were synthesized. Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers from zero to three generations, presenting 3 to 24 peripheral functionalities, were utilized to prepare as many as 12 catalysts. The dendrimer peripheries were partially and fully functionalized with triphenylphosphine in the first instance. A rhodium(I) metal complexation was performed subsequently to afford multivalent dendritic catalysts, both within and across generations. Upon synthesis, the dendritic catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of styrene, in a substrate-to-catalyst ratio of 1:0.001. Turn-over-numbers were evaluated for each catalyst, from which significant increases in the catalytic activities were identified for multivalent catalysts than monovalent catalysts, both within and across generations. This report deals with a study of the properties of internal cavities of dendritic macromolecules that are capable Of encapsulating and mediating photoreactions of guest molecules. The internal cavity structures of dendrimers are determined by the interfacial regions between the aqueous exterior and hydrocarbon like interior constituted by the linkers that connect symmetrically sited branch points constituting the dendrimer and head groups that cap the dendrimers. Phloroglucinol-based poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers constituted with a homologous series of alkyl linkers were undertaken for the current study. Twelve dendrimers within first, second, and third generations, having ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl, and n-pentyl groups as the linkers and hydroxyl groups at peripheries in each generation, were synthesized. Encapsulation of pyrene and coumarins by aqueous basic solutions of dendrimers were monitored-by UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, which showed that a lower generation dendrimer with an optimal alkyl linker presented better encapsulation abilities than a higher generation dendrimer. Norrish type I photoreaction of dibenzyl ketone was carried out within the above: series of dendrimers to probe their abilities to hold guests and reactive inthermediate radical pairs within themselves. The extent of cage effect from the series of third generation dendrimers was observed to be higher with dendrimers having an n-pentyl group as the linker.

Poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimers of up to four generations composed of a phloroglucinol core, branching components, and pentamethylene spacers are synthesized by a divergent growth methodology. A repetitive synthetic sequence of phenolic O-alkylation and O-benzyl deprotection reactions are adopted for the synthesis of these dendrimers. The peripheries of the dendrimers contain 6, 12, 24, and 48 phenolic hydroxyl groups, either in the protected or unprotected form, for the first, second, third, and fourth generations, respectively. Because of the presence of hydrophilic exterior and relatively hydrophobic interior regions, alkaline aqueous solutions of these dendrimers are able to solubilize an otherwise insoluble pyrene molecule and these supramolecular complexes precipitate upon neutralization of the aqueous solutions.

Dendritic rnicroenvironments defined by dynamic internal cavities of a dendrimer were probed through geometric isomerization of stilbene and azobenzene. A third-generation poly(alkyl aryl ether) dendrimer with hydrophilic exterior and hydrophobic interior was used as a reaction cavity in aqueous medium. The dynamic inner cavity sizes were varied by utilizing alkyl linkers that connect the branch junctures from ethyl to n-pentyl moiety (C(2)G(3)-C(5)G(3)). Dendrimers constituted with n-pentyl linker were found to afford higher solubilities of stilbene and azobenzene. Direct irradiation of trans-stilbene showed that C(5)G(3) and C(4)G(3) dendrimers afforded considerable phenanthrene formation, in addition to cis-stilbene, whereas C(3)G(3) and C(2)G(3) gave only cis-stilbene. An electron-transfer sensitized trans-cis isomerization, using cresyl violet perchlorate as the sensitizer, also led to similar results. Thermal isomerization of cis-azobenzene to trans-azobenzene within dendritic microenvironments revealed that the activation energy of the cis- to trans-isomer was increasing in the series C(5)G(3) < C(4)G(3) < C(3)G(3)

The challenge of the present work was to synthesize and to characterize new classes of N-containing polymers via palladium-catalyzed aryl amination. This work was inspired by a desire to combine the properties of high-performance polymers such as PEKs with those of N-containing conductive polymers such as polyaniline (PANI), poly(aromatic amides) (PAAs), and the ready synthesis of N-containing simple aromatic compound by the Buchwald-Hartwig reaction. Careful investigation of a model reaction was carried out to provide insights into the formation of side products which will have a negative effect upon the molecular weight or upon the materials properties of the desired polymers in the polycondensation reaction. In this thesis, five new different polymer classes namely, poly(imino ketone)s (PIKs), poly(imino acridine)s (PIAcs), poly(imino azobenzene)s (PIAzos), poly(imino fluorenone)s (PIFOs), and poly(imino carbazole)s (PICs) were synthesized and fully characterized by means of 1H-NMR, elemental analysis, UV, FT-IR, X-ray, GPC, TGA, DSC, DMA, and dielectric spectroscopy. To optimize the polycondensation process, the influence of the concentration, temperature, ligands and the reactivity of the halogen containing monomers were investigated. A temperature of 100-165 °C and a concentration of 30-36 % were found to be optimal for the palladium-catalyzed polycondensation to produce polymer with high molecular weight (Mn = 85 900, Mw = 474 500, DP = 126). Four different ligands were used successfully in the Pd-catalyzed process, of which the Pd/BINAP system was found to be the most effective catalyst, producing the highest yield and highest molecular weight polymers. It was found that the reactivity decreases strongly with increasing electronegativity of the halogen atoms, for example better yields, and higher molecular weights were obtained by using dibromo compounds than dichloro compounds while difluoro compounds were totally unreactive. Polymer analogous transformations, such as the protonation reaction of the ring nitrogens in PIAcs, or of the azobenzene groups of PIAzos, the photo and thermal cis-trans-isomerization of PIAzos, and of poly(imino alcohol)s were also studied. The values of the dielectric constants of PIKs at 1 MHz were in the range 2.71-3.08. These low values of the dielectric constant are lower than that of "H Film", a polyimide Kapton film which is one of the most preferred high-performance dielectrics in microelectronic applications having a dielectric constant of 3.5. In addition to the low values of the dielectric constants, PIKs have lower and glass transition temperatures (Tgs) than arimides such as Kapton which may make them more easily processable. Cyclic voltammetry showed that PICs exhibited low oxidation and reduction potentials and their values were shifted to low values with increasing degree of polymerization i.e. with increasing of the carbazole content in backbone of PICs (PIC-7, 0.44, 0.33 V, DP= 37, PIC-5, 0.63, 0.46, DP= 16, respectively).

Two new stepladder conjugated polymers, that is, poly(7,7,15,15-tetraoctyldinaphtho[1,2-a:1',2'-g]-s-indacene) (PONSI) and poly(7,7,15,15-tetra(4-octylphenyl)dinaphtho[1,2-a:1',2'-g]-s-indacene) (PANSI) with alkyl and aryl substituents, respectively, have been synthesized and characterized. In comparison with poly(indenofluorene)s, both polymers have extended conjugation at the direction perpendicular to the polymer backbone because of the introduction of naphthalene moieties. The emission color of the polymers in film state is strongly dependent on the substituents. While PONSI emits at a maximum of 463 nm, PANSI with the same backbone but aryl substituents displays dramatically redshifted emission with a maximum at 494 nm.

The X-ray diffraction patterns of the crystalline aromatic ketone polymer PEKEKmK (aryl ether ketone ether ketone ketone polymer containing meta-phenyl links) have been investigated (for the chemical structure, see Formula). An orthorhombic unit cell is proposed to contain two chains with a = 0.772 nm, b = 0.604 nm and c = 2.572 nm. According to the orthorhombic system, the 11 reflections of this polymer were indexed. Meanwhile, variation in unit cell parameters with crystallization temperatures of PEKEKmK was also investigated. [GRAPHICS]

Macrocyclic arylene ether ketone dimer was isolated from a mixture of cyclic oligomers obtained by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of bisphenol A and 4,4'-difluorobenzophenone and easily polymerized to high molecular weight linear poly(ether ketone). The cyclic compound was characterized by FTIR, H-1- and C-13-NMR, and single-crystal x-ray diffraction. Analysis of the spectral and crystal structure reveals extreme distortions of he phenyl rings attached to the isopropylidene center and of the turning points of the molecular polygons. The release of the ring strain on ring-opening combined with entropical difference between the linear polymer chain and the more rigid macrocycle at temperatures of polymerization may be the proposed motivating factors in the polymerization of this precursor to high molecular weight poly(ether ketone). Poly(amidoamine) dendrimers were synthesized on cross-linked aminomethyl polystyrene. Palladium complexes of supported dendrimers prepared by ligand exchange method were reduced to dendrimernanoparticle conjugates supported on polystyrene resin. The supported nanoparticles were used as heterogeneous catalysts for the Suzuki coupling between aryl boronic acids and aryl halides. Various factors affecting the catalysts performance were studied. Higher generation dendrimers gave well-defined nanoparticles without agglomeration and these particles showed good catalytic performance

Six Ru(II) complexes of formula [Ru(L)(2)(PPh3)(2)] have been prepared where LH = 4-(aryl)thiosemicarbazones of thiophen-2-carbaldehyde. X-ray crystal structures of five of the complexes are reported. In all the complexes ruthenium is six coordinate with a distorted octahedral cis-P-2, cis-N-2, trans-S-2 donor environment, and each of the two thiosemicarbazone ligands are coordinated in a bidentate fashion forming a four membered chelate ring. The complexes undergo a one-electron oxidation at similar to 0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The EPR spectrum of the electrochemically oxidized solution at 100 K shows a rhombic signal, with transitions at g(1) = 2.27, g(2) = 2.00 and g(3) = 1.80. DFT calculations on one of the complexes suggest that there is 35% ruthenium and 17% sulfur orbital contribution to the HOMO. These results suggest that the assignment of metal atom oxidation states in these compounds is not unambiguous. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
