Thin films of perovskite-type materials such as PbTiO3, BaTiO3, (Pb,La)TiO3, (Pb, La)(ZrTi)O-3, KNbO3, and Pb(Mg,Nb)03 have been attracting great interest for applications like non-volatile memories, ultrasonic sensors and optical devices. Thin film should be epitaxially grown or at least highly textured since the properties of this anisotropic material depend on the crystallographic orientation. For optical devices, in particular, an epitaxial thin film without defects are essential to reduce optical propagation losses. Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (PLT) where x=0, 13 and 27% thin films were prepared by a chemical method (polymeric precursors method), and deposited by the spin coating technique onto substrates of SrTiO3 (STO) and LaAlO3 (LAO). The films were then beat treated at 500 degrees C in a controlled atmosphere of 0,. The orientation degree of the thin films was obtained from rocking curve technique, by means of X-ray difftaction analysis. A microstructural study revealed that the films were crack-free, homogeneous and have low roughness. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Crystalline PbTiO3 was obtained through the thermal decomposition of 8-hydroxyquinolinate of lead(II) and that of titanium(IV), which was monitored by TG/DTG/DTA under different atmospheric conditions and with varying heating rates. The compound was prepared from adding 8-hydroxyquinoline solution in the solution of metallic ions Pb(II):Ti(IV) (1:1) Linder constant stirring at 3degreesC, having the pH adjusted to 10. The results of these investigations show that different thermal behavior related to the precursor occurred and also the consequent formation of residues which have different crystallinities. No carbonate residues from the thermal decomposition could be determined by XRD and IR. Only PbTiO3 was observed and confirmed by DSC at 470degreesC, temperature lower than the tetragonal-cubic transition.

We have performed dielectric and micro-Raman spectroscopy measurements in the 298 - 673 K temperature range in polycrystalline Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films prepared by a soft chemical method. The phase transition have been investigated by dielectric measurements at various frequencies during the heating cycle. It was found that the temperature corresponding to the peak value of the dielectric constant is frequency-independent, indicating a non-relaxor ferroelectric behavior. However, the dielectric constant versus temperature curves associated with the ferroelectric to paraelectric phase transition showed a broad maximum peak at around 433 K. The observed behavior is explained in terms of a diffuse phase transition. The obtained Raman spectra indicate the presence of a local symmetry disorder, due to a higher strontium concentration in the host lattice. The monitoring of some modes, conducted in the Pb0.50Sr0.50TiO3 thin films, showed that the ferroelectric tetragonal phase undergoes a transition to the paraelectric cubic phase at around 423 K. However, the Raman activity did not disappear, as would be expected from a transition to the cubic paraelectric phase. The strong Raman spectrum observed for this cubic phase is indicative that a diffuse-type phase transition is taking place. This behavior is attributed to distortions of the perovskite structure, allowing the persistence of low-symmetry phase features in cubic phase high above the transition temperature. This result is in contrast to the forbidden first-order Raman spectrum, which would be expected from a cubic paraelectric phase, such as the one observed at high temperature in pure PbTiO3 perovskite.

Polycrystalline or single-crystal ferroelectric materials present dielectric dispersion in the frequency range 100 MHz-1 GHz that has been attributed to a dispersive ( relaxation-like) mechanism as well as a resonant mechanism. Particularly in 'normal' ferroelectric materials, a dielectric response that is indistinguishable from dispersion or a resonance has been reported. Nevertheless, the reported results are not conclusive enough to distinguish each mechanism clearly. A detailed study of the dielectric dispersion phenomenon has been carried out in PbTiO3-based ferroelectric ceramics, with the composition Pb1-xLaxTiO3 (x = 0.15), over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, including microwave frequencies. The dielectric response of La-modified lead titanate ferroelectric ceramics, in 'virgin' and poled states, has been investigated in the temperature and frequency ranges 300-450 K and 1 kHz-2 GHz, respectively. The results revealed that the frequency dependence of the dielectric anomalies, depending on the measuring direction with respect to the orientation of the macroscopic polarization, may be described as a general mechanism related to an 'over-damped' resonant process. Applying either a uniaxial stress along the measurement field direction or a poling electric field parallel and/or perpendicular to the measuring direction, a resonant response of the real and imaginary components of the dielectric constant is observed, in contrast to the dispersion behavior obtained in the absence of the stress, for the 'virgin' samples. Both results, resonance and/or dispersion, can be explained by considering a common mechanism involving a resonant response (damped and/or over-damped) which is strongly affected by a ferroelastic-ferroelectric coupling, contributing to the low-field dielectric constant.

The Pechini method as well as the simultaneous addition of seeds particles and dopant solutions of BaTiO3 (BT) and PbTiO3 (PT) were used to prepare the perovskite phase 0.88 PZN-0.07 BT-0.05 PT. To study the influence of seed particle frequency on the synthesis of the PZN ceramic, two ranges of seed particle size were used: the range from 30 to 100 nm, termed small seed particles (frequency of 10(15) particles/cm(3)); and the range from 100 to 900 nm, termed large seed particles (frequency of 10(13) particles/cm(3)). The crystalline nuclei size influenced the calcining process, the sintering process and the microstructure. Samples prepared with lower seed frequency displayed more amount of pyroclore phase, need higher temperatures for sintering and showed a more heterogeneous microstructure with poor dielectric properties. Recently, mechanochemical synthesis was widely used in preparation of perovskite type of materials, such as BaTiO3, PbTiO3, PZT, etc. In this work, the possibility of mechanochemical synthesis of CaTiO3 from different precursors, such as CaCO3 or CaO and TiO2 was investigated. Intensive milling of mixture of CaO and TiO2, under optimal milling conditions, resulted in synthesis of single phase CaTiO3. It was also found that intensive milling of powder mixture containing CaCO3 and TiO2 only activate the powders for the sintering process; hence the CaTiO3 could be obtained at lower temperatures of sintering. To complete reaction of CaTiO3 formation during milling it is necessary to reduce CO2 partial pressure, i.e. it is necessary to change the atmosphere inside the vials during milling. In this work, an explanation for difference in milling behavior of different precursors was proposed and discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The partial oxalate method, with the columbite route, associated with the Pechini method, was used to obtain a very fine ceramic powder at low temperature. Using this route it was possible to obtain a very reactive powder and to synthesize a lead magnesium niobate (PMN) powder with up to 100% of perovskite phase at a lower temperatures than the PbO melting point. The influence of the BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 seeds in the phase formation, along with time and temperature during the PMN calcination, was also investigated. The amount of 2% of BaTiO3 seeds promoted PMN powder formation with 100% of perovskite phase and a very narrow particle size distribution. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. Ltd and Techna S.r.l. Detailed room temperature micro-Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy and specular reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy studies were carried out on soft chemical by processed Pb1-xBaxTiO3 thin films. The micro-Raman spectra pointed the existence of a stable tetragonal ferroelectric phase in the entire composition range (0 < x <= 1). The infrared reflectance spectra showed that the frequency of several peaks decreases as the Ba2+ concentration increases. These features are correlated to a decrease in the tetragonal distortion of the TiO6 octahedra as the Ba2+ concentration increases. Furthermore, as x increases from 0.70 to 1.0, the Raman spectrum shows an evolution towards the well-known Raman spectrum of the tetragonal BaTiO3. Therefore, we demonstrated that the combination of solid solution PbTiO3-BaTiO3 with a grain size in the order of 30-40 nm supports the tetragonal ferroelectric phase at room temperature. Pb1-xCaxTiO3 (0.10less than or equal toxless than or equal to0.40) thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates were prepared by the soft solution process and their characteristics were investigated as a function of the calcium content (x). The structural modifications in the films were studied using x-ray diffraction and micro-Raman scattering techniques. Lattice parameters calculated from x-ray data indicate a decrease in lattice tetragonality with the increasing content of calcium in these films. Raman spectra exhibited characteristic features of pure PbTiO3 thin films. Variations in the phonon mode wave numbers, especially those of lower wave numbers, of Pb1-xCaxTiO3 thin films as a function of the composition corroborate the decrease in tetragonality caused by the calcium doping. As the Ca content (x) increases from 0.10 to 0.40, the dielectric constant at room temperature abnormally increased at 1 kHz from 148 to 430. Also calcium substitution decreased the remanent polarization and coercive field from 28.0 to 5.3 muC/cm(2) and 124 to 58 kV/cm, respectively. These properties can be explained in terms of variations of phase transition (ferroelectric-paraelectric), resulting from the substitution the lead site of PbTiO(3)for the nonvolatile calcium. The phase evolution of lead titanate processed by the polymeric precursor method was investigated by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The results showed that the cubic perovskite PbTiO3 (PT) phase is formed from an inorganic amorphous precursor at a temperature of 444 °C. A gradual transition from cubic to tetragonal perovskite PT was observed with the increase of calcination time at this temperature. HRTEM results showed that the cubic PT particles have a size of around 5 nm. The identification of cubic PT as an intermediate phase supports the hypothesis that the chemical homogeneity was kept at the molecular level during the synthesis process, with no cation segregation.

Intense photoluminescence in highly disordered (amorphous) BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and SrTiO3 prepared by the polymeric precursor method was observed at room temperature. The emission band maxima from the three materials are in the visible region and depend on the exciting wavelength. The origin of the photoluminescence was not exactly identified. However, the line shape indicates that confinement effects are not probable. The experimental results indicate that it could be related to the disordered perovskite structure. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

PMN belongs to a special class of materials named relaxor ferroelectrics. It has high volumetric efficiency due to its high dielectric constant, which makes it in a perfect material for application in multilayer capacitors. When prepared the columbite route its preparation has many advantages. In this work, the preparations of columbite and PMN were done by Pechini and Partial Oxalate methods, respectively. The effects of the KNbO3 and LiNbO3 dopants added in various concentrations. The idea is founded on the correlations that they have with BaTiO3 y PbTiO3, respectively. The whole process was supervised by TG/DTA, XRD, SEM and determination of the specific surface area of the powders. LiNbO3 carries out the pre-sinterization of the particles, observed by a reduction in the surface area. There are not particle grow, but occur its lengthening. However, for KNbO3 these particle growth, but the agglomerates are softer. The effect produced by the doping during the synthesis of the PMN powder is different from the one produced in the columbite precursor. Pure precursor shows an average particle size of 0,2μm, but the addition of 5,0mol% of dopants carries out the formation of agglomerates close to 4μm. LiNbO 3 addition carries out spherical particles and pre-sinterization, while KNbO3 addition does not change the particles shape.

It is very important for the building of the SAW devices to study dielectric and ferroelectrics properties because every SAW device is based in piezoelectric effect that it is made up to transform an electric sign in the mechanical or acoustic sign and a mechanical or acoustic sign in an electric sign. Thus, the purpose of the present work is to prepare PbZr 0,53Ti0.47O3 (PZT) and PbTiO3 (PT) thin films on the Si (100) substrates across spin-coating using a chemical method based in polymeric precursors. After conventional treatment in the furnace, the films were characterized by impedance spectroscopy and hysteresis loops to know its dielectric and ferroelectric properties.
