In this paper, recent progresses in optical analysis of dislocation-related physical properties in GaN-based epilayers are surveyed with a brief review. The influence of dislocations on both near-band edge emission and yellow luminescence (YL) is examined either in a statistical way as a function of dislocation density or focused on individual dislocation lines with a high spatial resolution. Threading dislocations may introduce non-radiative recombination centers and enhance YL, but their effects are affected by the structural and chemical environment. The minority carrier diffusion length may be dependent on either dislocation density or impurity doping as confirmed by the result of photovoltaic spectra. The in situ optical monitoring of the strain evolution process is employed during GaN heteroepitaxy using an AIN interlayer. A typical transition of strain from compression to tension is observed and its correlation with the reduction and inclination of threading dislocation lines is revealed. We have investigated the growth of AlGaN epilayers on a sapphire substrate by metalorganic chemical vapour deposition using various low-temperature ( LT) AlN buffer thicknesses. Combined scanning electron microscopy and cathodoluminescence investigations reveal the correlation between the surface morphology and optical properties of AlGaN films in a microscopic scale. It is found that the suitable thickness of the LT AlN buffer for high quality AlGaN growth is around 20 nm. The Al compositional inhomogeneity of the AlGaN epilayer is attributed to the low lateral mobility of Al adatoms on the growing surface.

Tb3+-doped zinc oxide nanocrystals with a hexagonal wurzite structure were successfully prepared by reaction between Zn-O-Tb precursors and LiOH in ethanol. Good incorporation of Tb3+ in ZnO nanocrystals is proved by XRD, FTIR, PL and PLE measurements. The presence of acetate complexes to zinc atoms on particle surfaces is disclosed by FTIR results. Emission from both Tb3+ ions and surface states in ZnO matrix, as well as their correlation were observed. The luminescence mechanism is discussed. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The nonlinear optical properties of semiconductor quantum wells driven by intense in-plane terahertz electric fields are investigated theoretically by employing the extended semiconductor Bloch equations. The dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect of the optical absorption near the band edge is analyzed with Coulomb correlation among the carriers included. The in-plane terahertz field induces a variety of behavior in the absorption spectra, including terahertz replicas of the (dark) 2p exciton and terahertz sidebands of the 1s exciton. The dependence of these interesting features on the intensity, frequency, and phase of the terahertz field is explored in detail.

We have investigated the dressed effects of non-degenerate four-wave mixing (NDFWM) and demonstrated a phase-sensitive method of studying the fifth-order nonlinear susceptibility due to atomic coherence in RN-type four-level system. In the presence of a strong coupling field, NDFWM spectrum exhibits Autler-Townes splitting, accompanied by either suppression or enhancement of the NDFWM signal, which is directly related to the competition between the absorption and dispersion contributions. The heterodyne-detected nonlinear absorption and dispersion of six-wave mixing signal in the RN-type system show that the hybrid radiation-matter detuning damping oscillation is in the THz range and can be controlled and modified through the colour-locked correlation of twin noisy fields.

Self-organized InAs quantum; dots sheets are grown on GaAs(100) substrate and tapped by 80nm GaAs layer with molecular beam epitaxy. Samples were annealed and characterized with Raman spectra, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and photolumincscence (PL). The Raman spectra indicates arsenic clusters in the GaAs capping layer. The TEM analysis revealed the relaxation of strain in some InAs islands with the introduction of the network of 90 dislocations. In addition, the structural changes also lead to the changes of the PL spectra from me InAs islands. Their correlation was discussed, Our results suggest:est that annealing may be used to intentionally modify me properties of self-organized InAs islands on GaAs.

Well-ordered single, double/four parallel, three/four-strands helical chains, and five-strand helical chain with a single atom chain at the center of Si nanowires (NWs) inside single-walled carbon nanotubes (Si-n@SWCNTs) are obtained by means of molecular dynamics. On the basis of these optimized structures, the structural evolution of Si-n@SWCNTs subjected to axial stress at low temperature is also investigated. Interestingly, the double parallel chains depart at the center and transform into two perpendicular parts, the helical shell transformed into chain, and the strand number of Si NWs increases during the stress load. Through analyzis of pair correlation function (PCF), the density of states (DOS), and the z-axis polarized absorption spectra of Si-n@SWCNTs, we find that the behavior of Si-n@SWCNTs under stress strongly depends on SWCNTs' symmetry, diameter, as well as the shape of Nws, which provide valuable information for potential application in high pressure cases such as seabed cable.

K(4)Ln(2)(CO3)(3)F-4 (Ln=Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) is a special type of frequency doubling compound, whose crystal structure exhibits a scarcity of fluorine ions. This leads to two different coordination polyhedrons in the general position of K(2) atoms: [K(2)O6F(1)(2)F(2)] and [K(21)O6F(1)(2)] in a 2/1 ratio. The chemical bonding structures of all constituent atoms of the compound K4Gd2(CO3)(3)F-4 (KGCOF) are comprehensively studied; moreover, the relationship between the chemical bonding structure and the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is investigated from the chemical bond viewpoint. The theoretical prediction of the NLO tensor coefficient d(11) of KGCOF is in agreement with experimental observation. Theoretical analyses show that the nonlinearity of this crystal type mainly originates from K-O bonds. In addition, the correlation between the NLO tensor d(11) and the refractive index n(0) of KGCOF is discussed. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(00)07506-X].

Soft X-ray transients (SXTs) are a subgroup of low-mass X-ray binaries consisting of a neutron star or a black hole and a companion low-mass star. SXTs exhibit a sudden outburst by increasing the luminosity from ∼ 1033 to ∼ 1036−38ergs1. After spending a few months in outburst, SXTs switch back to quiescence. Optical study of the binary system during the quiescence state of SXTs provides an opportunity to discriminate between BH binaries and neutron star binaries. The first part ot this research is composed of result of 10 years joint project between Hubble space telescope and Chandra, to study SXTs in M31. The other part of this thesis focused on the light curve of bright SXTs in M31. Disc irradiation is thought to be capable of explaining the global behaviour of the light curves of SXTs. Depending on the strength of the central X-ray emission in irradiating the disc, the light curve may exhibit an exponential or a linear decay. The model predicts that in brighter transients a transition from exponential decline to a linear one may be detectable. In this study, having excluded super-soft sources and hard X-ray transients, a sample of bright SXTs in M31 (Lpeak > 1038ergs1) has been studied. The expected change in the shape of the decay function is only observed in two of the light curves from the six light curves in the sample. Also, a systematic correlation between the shape of the light curve and the X-ray luminosity has not been seen.

In this paper we evaluate whether the assimilation of remotely-sensed optical data into a marine ecosystem model improves the simulation of biogeochemistry in a shelf sea. A localized Ensemble Kalman filter was used to assimilate weekly diffuse light attenuation coefficient data, Kd(443) from SeaWiFs, into an ecosystem model of the western English Channel. The spatial distributions of (unassimilated) surface chlorophyll from satellite, and a multivariate time series of eighteen biogeochemical and optical variables measured in situ at one long-term monitoring site were used to evaluate the system performance for the year 2006. Assimilation reduced the root mean square error and improved the correlation with the assimilated Kd(443) observations, for both the analysis and, to a lesser extent, the forecast estimates, when compared to the reference model simulation. Improvements in the simulation of (unassimilated) ocean colour chlorophyll were less evident, and in some parts of the Channel the simulation of this data deteriorated. The estimation errors for the (unassimilated) in situ data were reduced for most variables with some exceptions, e.g. dissolved nitrogen. Importantly, the assimilation adjusted the balance of ecosystem processes by shifting the simulated food web towards the microbial loop, thus improving the estimation of some properties, e.g. total particulate carbon. Assimilation of Kd(443) outperformed a comparative chlorophyll assimilation experiment, in both the estimation of ocean colour data and in the simulation of independent in situ data. These results are related to relatively low error in Kd(443) data, and because it is a bulk optical property of marine ecosystems. Assimilation of remotely-sensed optical properties is a promising approach to improve the simulation of biogeochemical and optical variables that are relevant for ecosystem functioning and climate change studies.

The transfer ionization process offers a unique opportunity to study radial and angular electron correlations in the helium atom. We report calculations for the multiple differential cross sections of the transfer ionization process p + He --> H + He++ + e(-). The results of these calculations demonstrate the strong sensitivity of the fully differential cross sections to fine details of electron correlation in the target atom. Specifically, angular electron correlation in the ground state of helium results in a broad peak in the electron emission spectra in the backward direction, relative to the incoming beam. Our model explains some of the key effects observed in measurements of multiple differential cross sections using the COLTRIMS technique.

A joint theoretical-experimental study of the transfer ionization process p + He -> H-0 + He2+ + e(-) is presented. For the first time all particles in the final state have been detected in triple coincidence. This fully differential measurement is in good agreement with a theoretical model where the target is described by a wavefunction containing both radial and angular correlation terms.

A homologous family of dialkyl phthalates has been used to investigate the effect of plasticizer/polymer compatibility on the response characteristics of transparent, plastic, thin optical gas sensing films for CO2 and oxygen. Plasticizer/polymer compatibilities were determined through the value of the difference in solubility parameter, i.e. Delta delta, for the plasticizer and polymer with a Delta delta value of zero indicating high compatibility. A strong correlation was found between plasticizer/polymer compatibility and sensitivity in phenol red/ethyl cellulose CO2-sensitive films and this relationship extended to CO2-sensitive films based on other polymers such as polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate). It extended also to optical O-2-sensitive films implying that the relationship is general for thin-film optical sensors. Other results from the CO2-sensitive films in different polymers indicated that the film sensitivity is largely independent of the polymer matrix regardless of its inherent gas permeability, when a sufficient quantity of compatible plasticizer is present. Pantothenicacid (PA), vitamin B5, is an essential B vitamin that may be fortified in food and as such requires robust and accurate methods of detection to meet compliance legislation. This study reports the production and characterisation of the first monoclonalantibody (MAb) specific for PA and the subsequent development of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensorassay for the quantification of PA. The developed assay was compared with an SPR based commercial kit which utilised a polyclonal antibody (PAb). Foodstuffs, including cereals (n = 43), infant formulas and baby food (n = 10) and fruit juices (n = 48) were analysed by both the MAb and PAb biosensorassays and comparison plots showed good correlation (R2 0.77–0.99). The results indicate that the MAb basedbiosensorassay is suitable for the measurement of PA in foodstuffs and has the added advantage of facilitating a constant, long term supply of identical antibody. Preliminary matrix studies suggest the MAb basedassay is an excellent candidate for further validation studies and routine quality assurance based analysis.
