Submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Environment and Heritage : Inquiry into a Sustainability Charter by the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation

The Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation1 (hereafter called Construction Innovation) supports the notion of the establishment of a Sustainability Charter for Australia and is interested in working collaboratively to achieve this outcome. A number of challenges need to be addressed to develop this Charter. This submission outlines these challenges and possible responses to them by a Sustainability Commission.

Australian and New Zealand nurses’ perceptions of procedural sedation and analgesia in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory : a qualitative study

Background: Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists’ guidelines for procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) are intended to apply across all clinical settings. As nurses are frequently responsible for patient care during PSA in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory (CCL), their perspectives can provide insight into the effectiveness of these guidelines within this particular setting. Methods: A cross-sectional sampling design was used to recruit nurses from urban, regional, public and private CCLs across Australia and New Zealand. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, digitally recorded and transcribed. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Twenty-three nurses from 16 CCLs across four states in Australia and New Zealand participated. Most held senior positions (managers=14; educators=5) and CCL experience ranged from 4 to 26 years (mean 11). Participants were concerned about the legitimacy of their practice as they administered PSA outside of guideline recommendations and deemed present education and training as deficient. Participants noted also that guideline recommendations were sometimes not adhered to as it was difficult to balance the increasingly complex PSA requirements of their case-mix with limited access to anaesthetists while trying not to delay procedures. Conclusion: Findings suggest that application of current PSA guidelines may be impractical for CCL nurses and, as a consequence, they are often not followed. Participants were concerned about risks to patient safety as they felt education and training was not commensurable with practice requirements. The findings suggest existing guidelines should be reviewed or new guidelines developed which address nursing practice, education and competency standards for PSA in the CCL

For a hundred years, since Federation, Australian consumers have suffered the indignity and the tragedy of price discrimination. From the time of imperial publishing networks, Australia has been suffered from cultural colonialism. In respect of pricing of copyright works, Australian consumers have been gouged; ripped-off; and exploited. Digital technologies have not necessarily brought an end to such price discrimination. Australian consumers have been locked out by technological protection measures; subject to surveillance, privacy intrusions and security breaches; locked into walled gardens by digital rights management systems; and geo-blocked.

Consent for third molar tooth extractions in Australia and New Zealand: A review of current practice

Background Informed consent is the legal requirement to educate a patient about a proposed medical treatment or procedure so that he or she can make informed decisions. The purpose of the study was to examine the current practice for obtaining informed consent for third molar tooth extractions (wisdom teeth) by Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Australia and New Zealand. Methods An online survey was sent to 180 consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in Australia and New Zealand. Surgeons were asked to answer (yes/no) whether they routinely warned of a specific risk of third molar tooth extraction in their written consent. Results 71 replies were received (39%). The only risks that surgeons agreed should be routinely included in written consent were a general warning of infection (not alveolar osteitis), inferior alveolar nerve damage (temporary and permanent) and lingual nerve damage (temporary and permanent). Conclusions There is significant variability among Australian and New Zealand Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons regarding risk disclosure for third molar tooth extractions. We aim to improve consistency in consent for third molar extractions by developing an evidence-based consent form.

Achievements in forest tree genetic improvement in Australia and New Zealand 2: Development of Corymbia species and hybrids for plantations in eastern Australia

This paper describes the establishment of provenance seedling seed orchards of three spotted gums and cadaga (all species of Corymbia ex Eucalyptus). It also discusses the limitations of growing the spotted gums as pure species including: lack of mass flowering, susceptibility to a fungal shoot blight and low amenability to vegetative propagation. These limitations, together with observation of putative natural hybrids of the spotted gums with cadaga, and the early promise of manipulated hybrids, led to an intensive breeding and testing program. Many hybrid families have significant advantages in growth and tolerance to disease, insects and frost, and can be vegetatively propagated. They also exhibit broad environmental plasticity, allowing the best varieties to be planted across a wider range of sites than the spotted gums, resulting in more land being suitable for plantation development.
