In this paper we report about the electrical properties of La 0.7Ca0.3MnO3 compounds substituted by copper on the manganese site and/or deliberately contaminated by SiO2 in the reactant mixture. Several phenomena have been observed and discussed. SiO2 addition leads to the formation of an apatite-like secondary phase that affects the electrical conduction through the percolation of the charge carriers. On the other hand, depending on the relative amounts of copper and silicon, the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity can be noticeably modified: our results enable us to compare the effects of crystallographic vacancies on the A and B sites of the perovskite with the influence of the copper ions substituted on the manganese site. The most original result occurs for the compounds with a small ratio Si/Cu, which display double-peaked resistivity vs. temperature curves. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

LaMnxAl12-xO19 catalysts were prepared from NH4OH and metal nitrates solutions. Supercritical drying (SCD) and conventional oven drying (CD) methods were used to extract the water in the hydrogel. The effects of drying methods on properties of the catalysts were investigated by means of TEM, N-2-adsorption, thermogravimetry (TG)-differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray diffraction. SCD method is beneficial to maintain high surface area and improving catalytic activity for methane combustion of the catalyst. The specific surface area and pore volume of LaMn1Al11O19 catalyst prepared by SCD method are 28 m(2)/g and 0.23 cm(3)/g, respectively, and the ignition of methane could be carried out at 450degreesC. However, those of the CD catalyst prepared from the same precursor are 15 m(2)/g, 0.11 cm(3)/g and 530 degreesC, respectively. Suitable Mn content (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 2) could promote the formation of LaMnAl11O19 hexaaluminate, while further addition of Mn (2 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 6) cause the formation of LaMnO3. We investigate the structural stability and electronic properties of ordered perovskite-type compounds Ba2MIrO6 (M = La, Y) by use of density functional theory. Cubic (Fm-3m), rhombohedral (R-3) and monoclinic (P2(1)/n) phases are considered for each compound. It was found that the most energetically stable phase for Ba2YIrO6 and Ba2LaIrO6 is P2(1)/n andR-3, respectively. It is also interesting to find that Ba2YIrO6 in R-3 phase, which was not reported in experiment, has a slightly lower energy than experimentally observed cubic Fm-3m phase.

Two systems of La2-xSrxCuO4+/-lambda and La2-xThxCuO4+/-lambda, mixed oxides with K2NiF4 structure were synthesized. The compositions and structures of the catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, XPS, chemical analysis and so on. The catalytic behavior for the direct decomposition of NO has been investigated. The results show that the catalytic activity is closely related to the oxygen vacancy and lower valence metallic ion in the direct decomposition of NO. The presence of oxygen vacancy is necessary for mixed oxide to have steady activity in NO decomposition.

X-ray photoelectron spectra of the bioinorganic complexes of Na and La with N-acetylalanine and N-acetylvaline have been measured. It has been found that the spectra of the O 1s core level in the complexes of Na with these amino acids are very different from those in the complexes of La with the same amino acids. The results indicate that in the complexes of La with N-acetylalanine and N-acetylvaline, both the oxygen atoms from the carboxyl group and the oxygen atoms from the carbonyl group of the amino acids will directly coordinate to the La ion, whereas only the oxygen atoms from the carboxyl group of the amino acids can directly coordinate to the Na ion in the complexes of Na with N-acetylalanine and N-acetylvaline.

SuperWASP is an ultra-wide field (over 300 sq. degrees) photometric survey project designed to monitor stars between 7 - 15 mag to high precision and with high cadence over long (greater than or equal to2 months) timescales. The primary science goal of this project is the detection of exoplanetary transits, as well as NEOs and optical transients. The resulting photometric catalogue will be made public via a web-based interface. The SuperWASP instrument consists of an array of cameras each with a 7.8degrees x 7.8degrees field of view, guided by a robotic fork mount and sited in a fibreglass enclosure at the Observatorio de Roque de los Muchachos (ORM), La Palma, Canary Islands. In this progress report, we describe the specifications of the instrument, its semi-automated operation and pipeline data reduction.

One of the enduring illusions about Northern Ireland is that its society can be conceptualized through a binary distinction between protestant and catholic. unionist and nationalist. It is increasingly apparent that these broad domains are themselves fractured and diverse and that otherness is often conceived from within rather than without. Northern Ireland can also be viewed as a laboratory for identity formation as unionists and loyalists strive to reconcile themselves with the fundamental political changes that have followed in the wake of the Peace Process. This paper considers one aspect of the contestation of belonging that increasingly characterizes unionism. It examines the competition for the ownership of the mythology of the Battle of the Somme ( 1916), long a key event in the unionist narrative. In particular, the paper addresses the ways in which paramilitary organizations are using the Somme to legitimate their own activities but also to distance the loyalist working classes from the former hegemonic Britishness of official unionism and the sectarianism of the Orange Order. The analysis concludes that loyalist identity is being conceptualized thorough a narrative of betrayal from within and at an intensely localized scale.

This witness seminar on the events in the East End of London of 4 October 1936, traditionally known as the ‘Battle of Cable Street’, was held at the Institute of Historical Research on 1 May 1991. It was chaired by Professor Geoffrey Alderman and introduced by Noreen Branson. The participants were Sid Bailey (former member of the BUF), Dr David Cesarani, Tony Gilbert, Charlie Goodman, Joyce Goodman, Professor Colin Holmes, Frank Lesser, Kevin Morgan (biographer of Harry Pollitt), Phil Piratin (Communist MP for Mile End 1945–50), Michael Quill, Jack Shaw, Harold Smith, Ronald F. Webb (former member of the BUF) and Len Wise (former member of the BUF). Yvonne Kapp was unable to attend but she sent a short account of her recollections of the event and this has been included with this transcript.

Microwave dielectric ceramics based on RETiTaO6 (RE = La, Cc, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb, Al, and In) were prepared using a conventional solid-state ceramic route. The structure and microstructure of the samples were analyzed using x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The sintered samples were characterized in the microwave frequency region. The ceramics based on Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, and Dy, which crystallize in orthorhombic aeschynite structure, had a relatively high dielectric constant and positive T f while those based on Ho, Er, and Yb, with orthorhombic euxenite structure, had a low dielectric constant and negative Tf. The RETiTaO6 ceramics had a high-quality factor. The dielectric constant and unit cell volume of the ceramics increased with an increase in ionic radius of the rare-earth ions, but density decreased with it. The value of Tf increased with an increase in RE ionic radii, and a change in the sign of Tf occurred when the ionic radius was between 0.90 and 0.92 A. The results indicated that the boundary of the aeschynite to euxenite morphotropic phase change lay between DyTiTaO6 and HoTiTaO6. Low-loss ceramics like ErTiTaO6 (Er = 20.6, Qxf = 85,500), EuTiTaO6 (Er = 41.3, Qxf = 59,500), and YTiTaO6 (Er = 22.1, Q„xf = 51,400) are potential candidates for dielectric resonator applications
