We have studied the optical and structural properties of InAs/GaAs QDs covered by InxGa1-xAs (0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.3) layer using transmission electron microscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectra and atomic force microscopy. We find that the strain reduces in the growth direction of InAs islands covered by InGaAs instead of GaAs layer. Significant redshift of PL peak energy and narrowing of PL linewidth are observed for the InAs QDs covered by 3 nm thick InGaAs layer. In addition, atomic force microscopy measurements indicate that the InGaAs islands will nucleate on top of InAs quantum dots, when 3 nm In0.3Ga0.7As overgrowth layer is deposited. This result can well explain the PL intensify degradation and linewidth increment of quantum dots with a higher In-mole-fraction InGaAs layer. The energy gap change of InAs QDs covered by InGaAs may be explained in terms of reducing strain, suppressing compositional mixing and increasing island height. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. The hydrogen production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) by anaerobic mixed culture fermentation was investigated using batch experiments at 37 degrees C. Seven varieties of typical individual components of OFMSW including rice, potato, lettuce, lean meat, oil, fat and banyan leaves were selected to estimate the hydrogen production potential. Experimental results showed that the boiling treated anaerobic sludge was effective mixed inoculum for fermentative hydrogen production from OFMSW. Mechanism of fermentative hydrogen production indicates that, among the OFMSW, carbohydrates is the most optimal substrate for fermentative hydrogen production compared with proteins, lipids and lignocelluloses. This conclusion was also substantiated by experimental results of this study. The hydrogen production potentials of rice, potato and lettuce were 134 mL/g-VS, 106 mL/g-VS, and 50 mL/g-VS respectively. The hydrogen percentages of the total gas produced from rice, potato and lettuce were 57-70%, 41-55% and 37-67%. 2008 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

Based on the n(x, lambda), the calculation of the reflection spectrum for vertical cavity surface emitting lasers shows that the deviation of the central wavelength caused by the change of layer thickness is much more than that caused by the change of AlAs mole fractions. Therefore the control of the MBE growth rate is very important.

Scan test can be inserted around hard IP cores that have not been designed with DFT approaches. An 18x18 bits Booth Coding-Wallace Tree multiplier has been designed with full custom approach with 0.61 m CMOS technology. When we reuse the multiplier in another chip, scan chain has been inserted around it to increase the fault coverage. After scan insertion, the multiplier needs 4.7% more areas and 24.4% more delay time, while the fault coverage reaches to 95%.

A fucoidan fraction was purified from the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum. The polysaccharide contained -fucose and sulfate as the only constituents. Combination of methylation analysis, Smith degradation, FTIR and NMR spectroscopy on the native and the de-sulfated polymers demonstrated that the fucoidan consisted of a highly branched core region with primarily α-(1→3)-linked fucosyl residues and a few α-(1→4) linkages. Branch points were at position 2 of the →3-linked internal residues. The side chains consisted of single and multi-unit fucosyl residues. The combined analytical data suggested also a complex sulfation pattern with substitution principally at position 2 and/or position 4. Such diversity in the structural features of this fucoidan may be of importance for its various biological properties.

A novel "bottom-up" approach to highly controllable nanoelectrode ensembles (NEEs) has been developed using colloidal nanoparticle self-assembly techniques. Ibis solution-based strategy allows flexible control over nanoelectrode size, shape, and interspacing of the as-prepared NEEs. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was proved to be a powerful tool to monitor the NEE topography, which yields parameters that can be used to calculate the fractional nanoelectrode area of the NEEs. AFM, ac impedance, and cyclic voltammetry studies demonstrate that most of nanoelectrodes on the NEEs (at least by 9-min self-assembly) are not diffusionally isolated under conventional ac frequency range and scan rates. As a result, the NEEs behave as "nanoelectrode-patch" assemblies. Besides, the as-prepared NEEs by different self-assembling times show an adjustable sensitivity to heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics, which may be helpful to sensor applications. Like these NEEs constructed by other techniques, the present NEEs prepared by chemical self-assembly also exhibit the enhancement of electroanalytical detection limit consistent with NEE theory prediction.
