Over the last 20 years, environmental management in Queensland has moved from the policy backwaters of government to the front line of operations by way of regulatory enforcement, industry programs and incentives. When the new Queensland Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EPA) came into effect, the business of environmental management has become a central feature of urban and rural development activity. The concept of environmentally sustainable development (ESD), has given life to the precautionary principle as a way for planners and regulators to place relevant controls on development. The planning, development and operation of pig farming systems has been effected by the new regulatory framework. Ever more definitive standards and approval permits have emerged which endeavour to achieve ESD. With these modern planning instruments in place, rural industry sectors have become, quite legitimately, concerned about future opportunities for research and innovation. This paper asserts that the capacity to engage in research and to achieve innovation in the pork producing industry is not hindered by Queensland environmental regulation frameworks. However, in order for research and innovation to prosper within these frameworks, some protocols need to be followed by the industry. What is at stake is community confidence.

This report provides key resource data for the ongoing assessment of the requirement for additional Marine Protected Areas (e.g. FHAs under the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994) in regions of high fish habitat value in northern Queensland from Cape Tribulation to Bowling Green Bay (hereafter referred to as the Study Area). The study also provides baseline information on the coastal wetlands within this Study Area for consideration in the Ramsar site nomination process. The Study Area extends from Cape Tribulation (16o 6’S, 145o 24’E) to Bowling Green Bay (19o 30’S, 147o 24’E) in tropical north Queensland. The project aimed to: 1. document and map the coastal wetland communities of the Study Area; 2. document levels of existing disturbance to and protection of the wetlands; 3. examine existing recreational, indigenous and commercial fisheries resources in the region; 4. evaluate the conservation values of the areas investigated from the viewpoint of fisheries productivity and as habitat for important and/or threatened species for future FHA/MPA declaration. A project to investigate the coastal wetland resources of the Burdekin Delta, north Queensland, was undertaken as part of the long-term assessment of the coastal fisheries resources of Queensland. Extending from November 1993 to May 1995, fieldwork was undertaken in November 1993 and August 1994. The scope of the coastal wetlands resources investigation of the Burdekin Delta for declaration as a Fish Habitat Area was: 1. To document and map the marine wetland vegetation communities in the Burdekin River delta. 2. To document levels of existing disturbance to wetlands, existing recreational and commercial fisheries resources, and existing fishing activities. 3. To evaluate the conservation values of the areas investigated from the viewpoint of fisheries productivity and as habitat for important/threatened species. 4. To initiate Fish Habitat Area declaration under Section 120 of the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994 with formal consultation to all stakeholders. This report concentrates on Points 1 and 3, the documentation of the marine wetland vegetation communities and the evaluation of conservation values from a fisheries viewpoint. BACKGROUND: Published work assessing psychosocial stress (job strain) as a risk factor for coronary heart disease is inconsistent and subject to publication bias and reverse causation bias. We analysed the relation between job strain and coronary heart disease with a meta-analysis of published and unpublished studies. METHODS: We used individual records from 13 European cohort studies (1985-2006) of men and women without coronary heart disease who were employed at time of baseline assessment. We measured job strain with questions from validated job-content and demand-control questionnaires. We extracted data in two stages such that acquisition and harmonisation of job strain measure and covariables occurred before linkage to records for coronary heart disease. We defined incident coronary heart disease as the first non-fatal myocardial infarction or coronary death. FINDINGS: 30?214 (15%) of 197?473 participants reported job strain. In 1·49 million person-years at risk (mean follow-up 7·5 years [SD 1·7]), we recorded 2358 events of incident coronary heart disease. After adjustment for sex and age, the hazard ratio for job strain versus no job strain was 1·23 (95% CI 1·10-1·37). This effect estimate was higher in published (1·43, 1·15-1·77) than unpublished (1·16, 1·02-1·32) studies. Hazard ratios were likewise raised in analyses addressing reverse causality by exclusion of events of coronary heart disease that occurred in the first 3 years (1·31, 1·15-1·48) and 5 years (1·30, 1·13-1·50) of follow-up. We noted an association between job strain and coronary heart disease for sex, age groups, socioeconomic strata, and region, and after adjustments for socioeconomic status, and lifestyle and conventional risk factors. The population attributable risk for job strain was 3·4%. INTERPRETATION: Our findings suggest that prevention of workplace stress might decrease disease incidence; however, this strategy would have a much smaller effect than would tackling of standard risk factors, such as smoking. This thesis Entitled compensation to workmen for industrial injuries.Evaluation of the different forms of liability for compensating industrial injuries makes it evident that the liability under the social insurance scheme is the most befitting one, as it eliminates the problem of evasion of liability by the employer by providing for sharing of liability. Liability for compensation under the workmen's Compensation Act, 1923 and the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 arises only in the case of accidents, arising in the course of and out of employment. Majority of the workers, covered by the workmen's Compensation Act, have supported lumpsum payment of compensation under the Act. It appears that workers are ignorant of the cemerits of lumpsum payment. So, the workers should be properly educated by the Inspectorate, proposed above, about the comparative advantages of periodical payments. It is suggested that the workmens Compensation Act, 1923 may be amended, imposing fee upon the parties for each adjournment. It is also suggested that provision may be made in the workmens Compensation Act, 1923 for the expeditious despatch of amendments of the Workmen's Compensation Act, 1923, the Workmens· Compensation Rules, 1924 and the Schedules, made from time to time, to the comrnissioners for workmens Compensation, This will help them mete out justice to an injured workman, as required by the changes in the law. The Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 and the Rules may be amended, requiring the employers to provide the employees with necessary information, in the vernacular language, about the employment injury benefits available under the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 and the formalities for obtaining the same. This will help the illiterate employees, especially the casual ones, avail of employment injury benefits. Changes in the law, on the lines suggested above, are imperative to make the system of compensation for industrial injuries prove effective and beneficial to injured workmen.

Introducción: Las estadísticas de siniestralidad laboral son el negativo de las condiciones de trabajo de la economía de un país. Las indeseables condiciones de trabajo que predominan en la actualidad probablemente sean consecuencia de las crecientes contrataciones temporales lo cual conduce a que se incrementen los accidentes de trabajo, debido a la pobre inversión en el área de riesgos laborales. Objetivo: Evaluación de la siniestralidad en pequeñas y medianas empresas de los sectores económicos de la regional centro en una aseguradora de riesgos laborales, Colombia, 2014. Materiales y métodos: Estudio tipo observacional descriptivo, retrospectivo, realizado a 14.994 eventos calificados como accidentes de trabajo en una aseguradora de riesgos laborales dela regional centro durante Enero a Diciembre del años 2014. Resultados: La mayor incidencia de accidentalidad fue en el sector económico de establecimientos financieros, seguros, actividades inmobiliarias y servicios a las empresas, con un 36.9%. Se encontró que el riesgo que genero mayor accidentalidad fue caída a nivel con un 17.2%. El grupo diagnostico que predomino fue el de heridas superficiales y heridas abiertas con un 77.4%. El tipo de atención que genero mayores atenciones fue la atención ambulatoria con 93.1%. Conclusión: El sector económico que se vio mayormente afectado en accidentalidad laboral fue el de establecimientos financieros, seguros, actividades inmobiliarias y servicios a las empresas. Al asociar dicho sector económico con el tipo de riesgo se determinó que el riesgo por lesión en accidente deportivo fue de un 61%, predisponiendo este al desarrollo de accidentalidad laboral. Por lo anterior se deben hacerr estrategias de intervención de prevención y promoción en las pequeñas y medianas empresas y como consecuencia disminuir las tasas de siniestralidad e impactar de manera positiva en la salud de los trabajadores, en las tasas de ausentismo laboral y el costo asistencial.

Introducción: Existen condiciones que definen la gravedad de accidentes laborales de tipo riesgo biológico como el contacto con una fuente conocida o desconocida, tipo de exposición según el fluido de contacto, el elemento causante y el tipo de lesión que causa. Objetivo: Describir e identificar la ocurrencia de los accidentes de trabajo con riesgo biológico que tienen la población trabajadora del sector salud y afines, afiliados a una ARL reportados durante el año 2014, suministradas en una base de datos de la IPS encargada del manejo de los eventos, con el fin de destacar su impacto y métodos de prevención de los mismos a través de la ARL. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal en el que se analizaron datos secundarios procedentes de una base de datos que incluyo los eventos sobre riesgo biológico reportados a una ARL entre el 1 de febrero del 2014 y el 31 de diciembre de 2014, se reportaron 1806 accidentes de tipo riesgo biológico donde se analizaron características sociodemográficas, tipo de fluido, tipo de fuente, tipo de accidente y tipo de elemento. Resultados: Se evidencio que los auxiliares de la salud fueron el grupo con mayor accidentalidad (65%) y los técnicos (49.9%). El sitio de mayor frecuencia de ocurrencia de los accidentes fue el intrahospitalario con 89.5%. La mayor accidentalidad se relacionó con el contacto con sangre y se presentó en trabajadores con nivel universitario (89.8%), seguido por los técnicos (84.6%) y auxiliares (67.3%). Se observó una ocurrencia de accidentes entre trabajadores con nivel primaria y secundaria con un porcentaje de 95.7% y 91.6% respectivamente, quienes además tienen mayor riesgo a tener accidentes con fuentes desconocidas, mientras que los técnicos (68.5%) y los universitarios (80.1%) fueron con fuente conocida. Dentro del grupo de auxiliares se destaca accidentes con fuente desconocida con 53.4%. Debido a la manipulación de elementos cortopunzantes con las manos, los dedos fueron la parte anatómica más afectada (84.1%) con elementos de alto riesgo y específicamente con sangre (77.1%). Conclusiones: El personal del área de la salud fue el más afectado dado el contacto directo con pacientes. Las auxiliares de servicios de salud fueron las más afectadas por tener contacto directo en la manipulación de elementos cortopunzantes con fluidos de alto riesgo como la sangre, y los dedos la parte anatómica más afectada con fuente conocida.

CONTEXT Chemical eye injuries are ophthalmological emergencies with a high risk of secondary complications and severe visual loss. Only limited epidemiological data for such injuries are available for many countries. PATIENTS AND METHODS We performed two independent studies. The cause of chemical eye injuries was assessed with a prospective questionnaire study. Questionnaires were sent to all ophthalmologists in Switzerland. A total of 163 patients (205 eyes) were included, between December 2012 and October 2014. Independent of the questionnaire study, the incidence of chemical eye injuries was assessed with a retrospective cohort study design using the database of the mandatory accident insurance. RESULTS Ophthalmological questionnaires revealed that plaster/cement (20.5%), alkaline (12.2%) and acid (10.2%) solutions caused the highest number of chemical injuries. Only 2% of all injuries were classified as grade III and none as grade IV (Roper-Hall classification). The official toxicological information phone-hotline was contacted in 4.3% of cases. Using data from the accident insurance, an incidence of chemical eye injuries of about 50/100 000/year was found in the working population. CONCLUSION Here, we present data on the involved agents of chemical eye injuries in Switzerland, and also the incidence of such injuries in the working population. This may also help to assess the need for further education programs and to improve and direct preventive measures.
