Background: Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable and biodegradable diesel fuel substitute derived from animal fats and plant oils, which may play an important role in replacing diminishing fossil fuel reserves and combating climate change. Conventional biodiesel production uses soluble base catalysts, such as Na or K alkoxides, to convert oils into fuel, and as a result requires energy intensive aqueous quench cycles to isolate the biodiesel product. Results: Cs-doping nanoparticulate MgO, prepared via a novel, supercritical sol-gel method, yields a solid base catalyst with improved activity for the transesterification of pure triacylglycerides (TAGs) and olive oil. Conclusion: Here, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is used to probe the local chemical environment of Cs atoms in order to identify the nature of the catalytically active species as CsMg(CO)(HO). © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.

Size-controlled MgO nanocrystals were synthesised via a simple sol-gel method and their bulk and surface properties characterised by powder XRD, HRTEM and XPS. Small, cubic MgO single crystals, generated by low temperature processing, expose weakly basic (100) surfaces. High temperature annealing transforms these into large, stepped cuboidal nanoparticles of periclase MgO which terminate in more basic (110) and (111) surfaces. The size dependent evolution of surface electronic structure correlates directly with the associated catalytic activity of these MgO nanocrystals towards glyceryl tributyrate transesterification, revealing a pronounced structural preference for (110) and (111) facets. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The influence of Cs on the structure and basicity of nanocrystalline MgO was assessed via electron microscopy, CO2 chemisorption, XRD and XPS. Caesium incorporation via co-precipitation under supercritical conditions generates Cs2Mg(CO3)2 nanocrystallites with an enhanced density and strength of surface base sites. Wet impregnation proved less effective for modifying MgO nanocrystals. A strong synergy between Cs and Mg components in the co-precipitated material dramatically enhanced the rate of tributyrin transesterification with methanol relative to undoped MgO and homogeneous Cs2CO3 catalysts. On-stream deactivation of Cs-doped MgO reflects heavy surface carbon deposition and loss of the high activity Cs2Mg(CO3)2 phase due to limited Cs dissolution.

High temperature processing of solvothermally synthesised MgO nanoparticles promotes striking changes in their morphology, and surface chemical and electronic structure. As-prepared NanoMgO comprised ∼4 nm cubic periclase nanocrystals, interspersed within an amorphous Mg(OH)(OCH3) matrix. These crystallites appear predominantly (1 0 0) terminated, and the overall material exhibits carbonate and hydroxyl surface functionalities of predominantly weak/moderate base character. Heating promotes gradual crystallisation and growth of the MgO nanoparticles, and concomitant loss of Mg(OH)(OCH3). In situ DRIFTS confirms the residual precursor and surface carbonate begin to decompose above 300 °C, while in situ XPS shows these morphological changes are accompanied by the disappearance of surface hydroxyl/methoxide species and genesis of O- centres which enhance both the surface density and basicity of the resulting stepped and defective MgO nanocrystals. The catalytic performance in tributyrin transesterification with methanol is directly proportional to the density of strong surface base sites. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An in situ XPS study of water, methanol and methyl acetate adsorption over as-synthesised and calcined MgO nanocatalysts is reported with a view to gaining insight into the surface adsorption of key components relevant to fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel) production during the transesterification of triglycerides with methanol. High temperature calcined NanoMgO-700 adsorbed all three species more readily than the parent material due to the higher density of electron-rich (111) and (110) facets exposed over the larger crystallites. Water and methanol chemisorb over the NanoMgO-700 through the conversion of surface O2 − sites to OH− and coincident creation of Mg-OH or Mg-OCH3 moieties respectively. A model is proposed in which the dissociative chemisorption of methanol occurs preferentially over defect and edge sites of NanoMgO-700, with higher methanol coverages resulting in physisorption over weakly basic (100) facets. Methyl acetate undergoes more complex surface chemistry over NanoMgO-700, with C–H dissociation and ester cleavage forming surface hydroxyl and acetate species even at extremely low coverages, indicative of preferential adsorption at defects. Comparison of C 1s spectra with spent catalysts from tributyrin transesterification suggest that ester hydrolysis plays a key factor in the deactivation of MgO catalysts for biodiesel production.

The thermodynamics properties of ferropericlase (Mg(1-x)Fe(x)O where x=0.1875) (Fp) throughout its spin crossover were investigated by first principles. Fp was treated as an ideal solid solution of pure high-spin and low-spin states. The Gibbs free energies of the pure states were addressed using the LDA+U method. A vibrational virtual-crystal model was developed to address the vibrational properties of the pure spin cases and used in conjunction with quasiharmonic theory to compute their vibrational free energies. The thermodynamics properties of Fp display significant anomalies that should be typical of spin crossover systems in general. In Fp, in particular, they are fundamental for understanding the state of earth's interior, where the pressure and temperature conditions of the crossover are realized.

A new species of land planarian from Colombia, Gigantea maupoi sp. nov., is described herein. The penis papilla of the new species is provided with numerous accessory genital organs, or mgo. These mgo are of a unique morphology, consisting of a very strong barrel-shaped circular muscle coat and an underlying longitudinal one, both derived from the subepithelial musculature of the penis papilla. The central mass of each mgo contains secretions and 8-15 canalicula that open to the male atrium on the central region of the organ. Differences in structures constituting the mgo and details of the muscular systems and of the reproductive organs among the 11 Gigantea species from literature and from type material of G. bistriata (Hyman, 1962), G. chiriquii (Hyman, 1962), and G. sandersoni (Prudhoe, 1949) reexamined here show that the genus is heterogeneous.

Yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) ceramics were sintered by liquid phase sintering at low temperatures using bioglass as sintering additive. ZrO2-bioglass ceramics were prepared by mixing a ZrO2 stabilized with 3 Mol%Y2O3 and different amounts of bioglass based on 3CaO center dot P2O5-MgO-SiO2 system. Mixtures were compacted by uniaxial cold pressing and sintered in air, at 1200 and 1300 degrees C for 120 min. The influence of the bioglass content on the densification, tetragonal phase stability, bending strength, hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. The ceramics sintered at 1300 degrees C and prepared by addition of 3% of bioglass, exhibited the highest strength of 435 MPa, hardness of 1170 HV and fracture toughness of 6.3 MPa m(1/2). These results are related to the low monoclinic phase content, high relative density and the presence of the thermal residual stress generated between the ZrO2-matrix and bioglass grain boundary, contributing to the activation of the toughening mechanisms. Magnesia hydration is a key concern in refractory castable processing. The volumetric expansion that follows this reaction can result in cracks or even explosion during the first heating-up. Citric acid (CA) and other chelants can significantly reduce MgO hydration rate in aqueous suspensions by forming an insoluble magnesium citrate protective coating on the magnesia particles` surface. In the present work, the performance of CA as an anti-hydration additive in refractory castables was evaluated by hydration tests, mechanical strength and apparent volumetric expansion (AVE) measurements and thermogravimetry. The results attained have shown that CA effectiveness depends strongly on the amount added and by the interaction with other raw materials in the composition, in particular calcium aluminate cement. Alumina ceramics with high in-line transmittance at 0.5-1.0 mm-thickness were prepared with different doping additives by sintering at 1850 degrees C in vacuum for 1-8 h. Depending on the additive contents and sintering variables bi-dimensionally large surface grains, caused by surface evaporation of MgO, had grown parallel to the surface with similar to 100 mu m thickness and lateral sizes up to the millimeter range. The abnormal grain-growth process also resulted in the formation of pores entrapped inside the large surface grains within a narrow zone at 10-20 mu m distance from the surface. The fraction of these pores is thickness-invariant. Scattering factors associated to the pores entrapped inside the bi-dimensionally large surface grains, second-phase particles, grain-boundaries, and microstructural surface defects are derived from the results of in-line transmission (at 600 nm) and are used together with microstructural characteristics to explain the light transmittance in these materials.
