Diagenesis of particulate organic matter in lake sediments consumes and produces chemical species that have significant effects on water quality, e.g. oxygen and nitrate depletion and attendant mediation of nutrient and metal recycling. A mechanistic, mass balance model (SED2K) is applied here in quantifying the time course and magnitude of sediment response to reductions in depositional fluxes of organic matter. In applying the model, direct, site-specific measurements of the sedimentation and POM rates in Onondaga Lake are used, leaving only the diagenesis coefficient (solubilization) for estimation by fit to downcore POM profiles. Model calibration is constrained by the dual requirement that both POM profiles and the time series of efflux of the products of diagenesis must be matched. Simulations point to the existence of POM preservation processes at depth, a phenomenon that may enhance the timing and magnitude of lake recovery.

Elevated nitrate in groundwater is common is agricultural areas where fertilizer has been added at high rates for decades. Within the Judith River Wastershed, high native soil fertility allowed for dryland wheat production without N fertilization until the 1980s, yet elevated nitrate levels were frequently observed in shallow aquifers. Dr. Stephanie Ewing presents results for soil, groundwater and surface water analyses from a hydrologically isolated strath terrace near Moccasin, MT. In context of this uniquely well constrained field setting, these observed data, along with land use history and a simple mass balance model, revel the long term development and perturbation of native soil fertility with cultivation.

Detrital provenance analyses in orogenic settings, in which sediments are collected at the outlet of a catchment, have become an important tool to estimate how erosion varies in space and time. Here we present how Raman Spectroscopy on Carbonaceous Material (RSCM) can be used for provenance analysis. RSCM provides an estimate of the peak temperature (RSCM-T) experienced during metamorphism. We show that we can infer modern erosion patterns in a catchment by combining new measurements on detrital sands with previously acquired bedrock data. We focus on the Whataroa catchment in the Southern Alps of New Zealand and exploit the metamorphic gradient that runs parallel to the main drainage direction. To account for potential sampling biases, we also quantify abrasion properties using flume experiments and measure the total organic carbon content in the bedrock that produced the collected sands. Finally, we integrate these parameters into a mass-conservative model. Our results first demonstrate that RSCM-T can be used for detrital studies. Second, we find that spatial variations in tracer concentration and erosion have a first-order control on the RSCM-T distributions, even though our flume experiments reveal that weak lithologies produce substantially more fine particles than do more durable lithologies. This result implies that sand specimens are good proxies for mapping spatial variations in erosion when the bedrock concentration of the target mineral is quantified. The modeling suggests that highest present-day erosion rates (in Whataroa catchment) are not situated at the range front but around 10 km into the mountain belt.

Fog deposition, precipitation, throughfall and stemflow were measured in a windward tropical montane cloud forest near Monteverde, Costa Rica, for a 65-day period during the dry season of 2003. Net fog deposition was measured directly using the eddy covariance (EC) method and it amounted to 1.2 ± 0.1 mm/day (mean ± standard error). Fog water deposition was 5-9% of incident rainfall for the entire period, which is at the low end of previously reported values. Stable isotope concentrations (d18O and d2H) were determined in a large number of samples of each water component. Mass balance-based estimates of fog deposition were 1.0 ± 0.3 and 5.0 ± 2.7 mm/day (mean ± SE) when d18O and d2H were used as tracer, respectively. Comparisons between direct fog deposition measurements and the results of the mass balance model using d18O as a tracer indicated that the latter might be a good tool to estimate fog deposition in the absence of direct measurement under many (but not all) conditions. At 506 mm, measured water inputs over the 65 days (fog plus rain) fell short by 46 mm compared to the canopy output of 552 mm (throughfall, stemflow and interception evaporation). This discrepancy is attributed to the underestimation of rainfall during conditions of high wind.

The lithium content of planktonic foraminiferal calcite has been determined to evaluate temporal variability of seawater Li concentrations over the past 116 m.y. Mean foraminiferal calcite lithium/calcium in each time interval is no more than 16% greater nor 25% less than the mean Li/Ca of all samples. Li/Ca minima are observed for samples from 50-60 m.y. and 80-90 m.y., with Li/Ca about 25% lower than in adjacent time intervals. At no time during the past 40 m.y does mean Li/Ca appear to be higher than that at present. Subject to the limitations imposed by sample coverage and diagenesis, a similar conclusion holds for the past 116 m.y. Coupled with an oceanic mass balance model for Li, these data suggest that: (1) oceanic Li concentrations and, therefore, high-temperature hydrothermal circulation fluxes during the past 40 m.y. (and perhaps the past 100 m.y.) have not been more than perhaps 30-40% greater than at present for intervals any longer than a million years at most, and (2) these fluxes were not a factor of two higher 100 m.y. ago. By inference, variations in oceanic crustal generation rates over these time periods are similarly limited. Decreases in hydrothermal circulation fluxes and crustal generation rates or fluctuations up to 20% in these rates of a few million years duration are not necessarily ruled out by the Li/Ca data. The lack of variability in Li/Ca over time is not unequivocal evidence that hydrothermal fluxes have not varied because the rates of removal processes may be linked to changes in input fluxes.

Lipids are used for the evaluation of the different organic matter contributions in the north eastern Norwegian sea (M23258 site; 75ºN, 14ºE) over the last 15,000 years. Development of a mass balance model based on the down core quantification of the C37 alkenones, the odd carbon numbered n-alkanes (Aodd) and the unresolved complex mixture of hydrocarbons (UCM) has allowed three main organic matter inputs involving marine, continental and ancient reworked organic matter to be recognized. The model shows a good agreement between measured and reconstructed TOC values. Similarly, a strong parallelism is observed between predicted components such as marine TOC and carbonate content (CaCO3), which was determined independently. Representation of the model results within a time-scale based on 15 AMS-14C measurements shows that the main changes in organic matter constituents are coincident with the major climatic events of the last 15,000 a. Thus, the predominance of reworked organic matter is characteristic of Termination Ia (up to 70%), continental organic matter was dominant during the Bølling-Allerød (B-A) and Younger Dryas (YD) periods (about 85%) and a strong increase of marine organic matter occurred in the Holocene (between 50 and 75%). This agreement reflects the main hydrographic changes that determined the deposition of sedimentary materials during the period studied: ice-rafted detritus from the Barents continental platform, ice-melting waters from the Arctic fluvial system discharging into the Barents sea and dominance of north Atlantic currents, respectively. In this respect, the high-resolution down core record resulting from the mass balance and lipid measurements allows the identification of millennial-scale events such as the increase of reworked organic matter at the final retreat of the Barents ice sheet at the end of the deglaciation period (Termination Ib).

Phosphorus cycling in the ocean is influenced by biological and geochemical processes that are reflected in the oxygen isotope signature of dissolved inorganic phosphate (Pi). Extending the Pi oxygen isotope record from the water column into the seabed is difficult due to low Pi concentrations and small amounts of marine porewaters available for analysis. We obtained porewater profiles of Pi oxygen isotopes using a refined protocol based on the original micro-extraction designed by Colman (2002). This refined and customized method allows the conversion of ultra-low quantities (0.5 - 1 µmol) of porewater Pi to silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) for routine analysis by mass spectrometry. A combination of magnesium hydroxide co-precipitation with ion exchange resin treatment steps is used to remove dissolved organic matter, anions, and cations from the sample before precipitating Ag3PO4. Samples as low as 200 µg were analyzed in a continuous flow isotope ratio mass spectrometer setup. Tests with external and laboratory internal standards validated the preservation of the original phosphate oxygen isotope signature (d18OP) during micro extraction. Porewater data on d18OP has been obtained from two sediment cores of the Moroccan margin. The d18OP values are in a range of +19.49 to +27.30 per mill. We apply a simple isotope mass balance model to disentangle processes contributing to benthic P cycling and find evidence for Pi regeneration outbalancing microbial demand in the upper sediment layers. This highlights the great potential of using d18OP to study microbial processes in the subseafloor and at the sediment water interface.

This research on odometry based GPS-denied navigation on multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles is focused among the interactions between the odometry sensors and the navigation controller. More precisely, we present a controller architecture that allows to specify a speed specified flight envelope where the quality of the odometry measurements is guaranteed. The controller utilizes a simple point mass kinematic model, described by a set of configurable parameters, to generate a complying speed plan. For experimental testing, we have used down-facing camera optical-flow as odometry measurement. This work is a continuation of prior research to outdoors environments using an AR Drone 2.0 vehicle, as it provides reliable optical flow on a wide range of flying conditions and floor textures. Our experiments show that the architecture is realiable for outdoors flight on altitudes lower than 9 m. A prior version of our code was utilized to compete in the International Micro Air Vehicle Conference and Flight Competition IMAV 2012. The code will be released as an open-source ROS stack hosted on GitHub.

Pregnancy leads to several changes in body composition and morphology of women. It is not clear whether the biomechanical changes occurring in this period are due exclusively to body composition and size or to other physiological factors. The purpose was to quantify the morphology and body composition of women throughout pregnancy and in the postpartum period and identify the contribution of these parameters on the lower limb joints kinetic during gait. Eleven women were assessed longitudinally, regarding anthropometric, body composition, and kinetic parameters of gait. Body composition and body dimensions showed a significant increase during pregnancy and a decrease in the postpartum period. In the postpartum period, body composition was similar to the 1st trimester, except for triceps skinfold, total calf area, and body mass index, with higher results than at the beginning of pregnancy. Regression models were developed to predict women’s internal loading through anthropometric variables. Four models include variables associated with the amount of fat; four models include variables related to overall body weight; three models include fat-free mass; one model includes the shape of the trunk as a predictor variable. Changes in maternal body composition and morphology largely determine kinetic dynamics of the joints in pregnant women.

Friction in hydrodynamic bearings are a major source of losses in car engines ([69]). The extreme loading conditions in those bearings lead to contact between the matching surfaces. In such conditions not only the overall geometry of the bearing is relevant, but also the small-scale topography of the surface determines the bearing performance. The possibility of shaping the surface of lubricated bearings down to the micrometer ([57]) opened the question of whether friction can be reduced by mean of micro-textures, with mixed results. This work focuses in the development of efficient numerical methods to solve thin film (lubrication) problems down to the roughness scale of measured surfaces. Due to the high velocities and the convergent-divergent geometries of hydrodynamic bearings, cavitation takes place. To treat cavitation in the lubrication problem the Elrod- Adams model is used, a mass-conserving model which has proven in careful numerical ([12]) and experimental ([119]) tests to be essential to obtain physically meaningful results. Another relevant aspect of the modeling is that the bearing inertial effects are considered, which is necessary to correctly simulate moving textures. As an application, the effects of micro-texturing the moving surface of the bearing were studied. Realistic values are assumed for the physical parameters defining the problems. Extensive fundamental studies were carried out in the hydrodynamic lubrication regime. Mesh-converged simulations considering the topography of real measured surfaces were also run, and the validity of the lubrication approximation was assessed for such rough surfaces.

Beyond the inherent technical challenges, current research into the three dimensional surface correspondence problem is hampered by a lack of uniform terminology, an abundance of application specific algorithms, and the absence of a consistent model for comparing existing approaches and developing new ones. This paper addresses these challenges by presenting a framework for analysing, comparing, developing, and implementing surface correspondence algorithms. The framework uses five distinct stages to establish correspondence between surfaces. It is general, encompassing a wide variety of existing techniques, and flexible, facilitating the synthesis of new correspondence algorithms. This paper presents a review of existing surface correspondence algorithms, and shows how they fit into the correspondence framework. It also shows how the framework can be used to analyse and compare existing algorithms and develop new algorithms using the framework's modular structure. Six algorithms, four existing and two new, are implemented using the framework. Each implemented algorithm is used to match a number of surface pairs. Results demonstrate that the correspondence framework implementations are faithful implementations of existing algorithms, and that powerful new surface correspondence algorithms can be created. This thesis describes work carried out to improve the fundamental modelling of liquid flows on distillation trays. A mathematical model is presented based on the principles of computerised fluid dynamics. It models the liquid flow in the horizontal directions allowing for the effects of the vapour through the use of an increased liquid turbulence, modelled by an eddy viscosity, and a resistance to liquid flow caused by the vapour being accelerated horizontally by the liquid. The resultant equations are similar to the Navier-Stokes equations with the addition of a resistance term.A mass-transfer model is used to calculate liquid concentration profiles and tray efficiencies. A heat and mass transfer analogy is used to compare theoretical concentration profiles to experimental water-cooling data obtained from a 2.44 metre diameter air-water distillation simulation rig. The ratios of air to water flow rates are varied in order to simulate three pressures: vacuum, atmospheric pressure and moderate pressure.For simulated atmospheric and moderate pressure distillation, the fluid mechanical model constantly over-predicts tray efficiencies with an accuracy of between +1.7% and +11.3%. This compares to -1.8% to -10.9% for the stagnant regions model (Porter et al. 1972) and +12.8% to +34.7% for the plug flow plus back-mixing model (Gerster et al. 1958). The model fails to predict the flow patterns and tray efficiencies for vacuum simulation due to the change in the mechanism of liquid transport, from a liquid continuous layer to a spray as the liquid flow-rate is reduced. This spray is not taken into account in the development of the fluid mechanical model. A sensitivity analysis carried out has shown that the fluid mechanical model is relatively insensitive to the prediction of the average height of clear liquid, and a reduction in the resistance term results in a slight loss of tray efficiency. But these effects are not great. The model is quite sensitive to the prediction of the eddy viscosity term. Variations can produce up to a 15% decrease in tray efficiency. The fluid mechanical model has been incorporated into a column model so that statistical optimisation techniques can be employed to fit a theoretical column concentration profile to experimental data. Through the use of this work mass-transfer data can be obtained.

The relative distribution of rare-earth ions R3+ (Dy3+ or Ho3+) in the phosphate glass RAl0.30P3.05O9.62 was measured by employing the method of isomorphic substitution in neutron diffraction and, by taking the role of Al into explicit account, a self-consistent model of the glass structure was developed. The glass network is found to be made from corner sharing PO4 tetrahedra in which there are, on average, 2.32(9) terminal oxygen atoms, OT, at 1.50(1) Å and 1.68(9) bridging oxygen atoms, OB, at 1.60(1) Å. The network modifying R3+ ions bind to an average of 6.7(1) OT and are distributed such that 7.9(7) R–R nearest neighbours reside at 5.62(6) Å. The Al3+ ion also has a network modifying role in which it helps to strengthen the glass through the formation of OT–Al–OT linkages. The connectivity of the R-centred coordination polyhedra in (M2O3)x(P2O5)1−x glasses, where M3+ denotes a network modifying cation (R3+ or Al3+), is quantified in terms of a parameter fs. Methods for reducing the clustering of rare-earth ions in these materials are then discussed, based on a reduction of fs via the replacement of R3+ by Al3+ at fixed total modifier content or via a change of x to increase the number of OT available per network modifying M3+ cation.

Neutron diffraction was used to measure the total structure factors for several rare-earth ion R3+ (La3+ or Ce3+) phosphate glasses with composition close to RAl0.35P3.24O10.12. By assuming isomorphic structures, difference function methods were employed to separate, essentially, those correlations involving R3+ from the remainder. A self-consistent model of the glass structure was thereby developed in which the Al correlations were taken into explicit account. The glass network was found to be made from interlinked PO4 tetrahedra having 2.2(1) terminal oxygen atoms, OT, at 1.51(1) Angstrom, and 1.8(1) bridging oxygen atoms, OB, at 1.60(1) Angstrom. Rare-earth cations bonded to an average of 7.5(2) OT nearest neighbors in a broad and asymmetric distribution. The Al3+ ion acted as a network modifier and formed OT-A1-OT linkages that helped strengthen the glass. The connectivity of the R-centered coordination polyhedra was quantified in terms of a parameter f(s) and used to develop a model for the dependence on composition of the A1-OT coordination number in R-A1-P-O glasses. By using recent 17 A1 nuclear-magnetic-resonance data, it was shown that this connectivity decreases monotonically with increasing Al content. The chemical durability of the glasses appeared to be at a maximum when the connectivity of the R-centered coordination polyhedra was at a minimum. The relation of f(s) to the glass transition temperature, Tg, was discussed.
