The k(0)-method instrumental neutron activation analysis (k(0)-INAA) was employed for determining chemical elements in bird feathers. A collection was obtained taking into account several bird species from wet ecosystems in diverse regions of Brazil. For comparison reason, feathers were actively sampled in a riparian forest from the Marins Stream, Piracicaba, Sao Paulo State, using mist nets specific for capturing birds. Biological certified reference materials were used for assessing the quality of analytical procedure. Quantification of chemical elements was performed using the k(0)-INAA Quantu Software. Sixteen chemical elements, including macro and micronutrients, and trace elements, have been quantified in feathers, in which analytical uncertainties varied from 2% to 40% depending on the chemical element mass fraction. Results indicated high mass fractions of Br (max=7.9 mgkg(-1)), Co (max= 0.47 mg kg(-1)), Cr (max =68 mg kg(-1)), Hg (max =2.79 mg kg(-1)), Sb (max= 0.20 mg kg(-1)), Se (max=1.3 mg kg(-1)) and Zn (max =192 mg kg(-1)) in bird feathers, probably associated with the degree of pollution of the areas evaluated. In order to corroborate the use of k(0)-INAA results in biomonitoring studies using avian community, different factor analysis methods were used to check chemical element source apportionment and locality clustering based on feather chemical composition. The inorganic chemical characterization of suspended sediments is of utmost relevance for the knowledge of the dynamics and movement of chemical elements in the aquatic and wet ecosystems. Despite the complexity of the effective design for studying this ecological compartment, this work has tested a procedure for analyzing suspended sediments by instrumental neutron activation analysis, k(0) method (k(0)-INAA). The chemical elements As, Ba, Br, Ca, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Eu, Fe, Hf, Fig, K, La, Mo, Na, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, Yb and Zn were quantified in the suspended sediment compartment by means of k(0)-INAA. When compared with World Average for rivers, high mass fractions of Fe (222,900 mg/kg), Ba (4990 mg/kg), Zn (1350 mg/kg), Cr (646 mg/kg), Co (74.5 mg/kg), Br (113 mg/kg) and Mo (31.9 mg/kg) were quantified in suspended sediments from the Piracicaba River, the Piracicamirim Stream and the Marins Stream. Results of the principal component analysis for standardized chemical element mass fractions indicated an intricate correlation among chemical elements evaluated, as a response of the contribution of natural and anthropogenic sources of chemical elements for ecosystems. Background: Silastic rings are used in gastric bypass procedures for the treatment of obesity, but ring slippage may lead to gastric pouch outlet stenosis (GPOS). Conventional management has been ring removal through abdominal surgery. Objective: To describe a novel, safe, minimally invasive, endoscopic technique for the treatment of GPOS caused by ring slippage after gastric bypass. Design: Case series. Setting: Federal University of Pernambuco and sao Paulo University. Patients: This study involved 39 consecutive patients who-were screened for inclusion. Intervention: Endoscopic dilation with an achalasia balloon. Main Outcome Measurements: Technical success and safety of the procedure. Results: Among the 39 patients, 35 underwent endoscopic dilation at the ring slippage site for the relief of GPOS. The 4 patients who did not undergo endoscopic dilation underwent surgical removal of the ring, based on the exclusion criteria. The endoscopic approach was successful in 1 to 4 sessions in 100% of cases with radioscopic control (n = 12). The duration of the procedures ranged from 5 to 30 minutes, and the average internment was 14.4 hours. Dilation promoted either rupture (65.7%) or stretching (34.3%) of the thread within the ring, thereby increasing the luminal diameter of the GPOS. Complications included self-limited upper digestive tract hemorrhage (n = 1) and asymptomatic ring erosion (n = 4). There were no recurrences of obstructive symptoms during the follow-up period (mean of 33.3 months). Limitations: This was not a randomized, comparison study, and the number of patients was relatively small. Conclusion: The technique described promotes the relief of GPOS with low overall morbidity and avoids abdominal reoperation for ring removal. (Gastrointest Endosc 2010;72:44-9.)

Background: Steroidogenic factor 1 (SF-1) is a key determinant of endocrine development and function of adrenal cortex. SF-1 overexpression and gene amplification were previously demonstrated in a small group of pediatric adrenocortical tumors. Objective: Our objective was to determine the frequency of SF-1 protein expression and gene amplification in a large cohort of pediatric and adult adrenocortical tumors. Patients: SF-1 protein expression was assessed in a cohort of 103 adrenocortical tumors from 36 children and 67 adults, whereas gene amplification was studied in 38 adrenocortical tumors ( 17 from children). Methods: Tissue microarray, multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification, and quantitative real-time PCR were used. Results: Astrong nuclear SF-1 expression was detected by tissue microarray in 56% (20 of 36) and 19% (13 of 67) of the pediatric and adult adrenocortical tumors, respectively (P = 0.0004). Increased SF-1 copy number was identified in 47% (eight of 17) and 10% (two of 21) of the pediatric and adult adrenocortical tumors, respectively (P = 0.02). All adrenocortical tumors with SF-1 gene amplification showed a strong SF-1 staining, whereas most of the tumors (61%) without SF-1 amplification displayed a weak or negative staining (P = 0.0008). Interestingly, a strong SF-1 staining was identified in five (29%) pediatric adrenocortical tumors without SF-1 amplification. The frequency of SF-1 overexpression and gene amplification was similar in adrenocortical adenomas and carcinomas. Conclusion: We demonstrated a higher frequency of SF-1 overexpression and gene amplification in pediatric than in adult adrenocortical tumors, suggesting an important role of SF-1 in pediatric adrenocortical tumorigenesis. Objectives. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how curing protocol affects the extent of polymerization of dual-cured resin cements. Methods. Four commercial resin cements were used (DuoLink, Panavia F 2.0, Variolink II and Enforce). The extent of polymerization of the resin cements cured under different conditions was measured using a (1)H Stray-Field MRI method, which also enabled to probe molecular mobility in the kHz frequency range. Results. Resin cements show well distinct behaviours concerning chemical cure. Immediate photo-activation appears to be the best choice for higher filler loaded resin cements (Panavia F 2.0 and Variolink). A photo-activation delay (5 min) did not induce any significant difference in the extent of polymerization of all cements. Significance. The extent of polymerization of dual-cured resin cements considerably changed among products under various curing protocols. Clinicians should optimize the materials choice taking into account the curing characteristics of the cements. (C) 2010 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Objectives. To analyze the microhardness of four dual-cure resin cements used for cementing fiber-reinforced posts under the following conditions: after 7 days of storage in water, after additional 24 h of immersion in 75% ethanol, and after 3 months of storage in water. Hardness measurements were taken at the cervical, middle and apical thirds along the cement line. Methods. Root canals of 40 bovine incisors were prepared for post space. Fibrekor (R) glass fiber-reinforced posts (Jeneric/Pentron) of 1 mm in diameter were cemented using Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray), Variolink (Ivoclar-Vivadent), Rely X Unicem (3M ESPE) or Duolink (Bisco) (N = 10). After 7 days of water storage at 37 degrees C, half the sample (N = 5) was longitudinally sectioned and the initial microhardness measured along the cement line from cervical to apex. These same samples were further immersed in 75% ethanol for 24 h and reassessed. The remaining half (N = 5) was kept unsectioned in deionized water at 37 degrees C for 3 months, followed by sectioning and measuring. Data were analyzed by a series of two-way ANOVA and Tukey tests at alpha = 5%. Results. Statistically significant differences were identified among the cements, thirds and conditions. Significant interactions were also observed between cements and thirds and between cements and conditions. Panavia F exhibited significantly higher initial microhardness than the other three cements, which showed no statistical difference among themselves. Variolink and Duolink showed significantly higher microhardness values in the cervical third, without significant difference among the thirds for the other cements. Immersion in ethanol significantly reduced the hardness values for all cements, regardless of the thirds. Storage in water for 3 months had no influence on the hardness of most of the cements, with the exception of Unicem that showed a significant increase in the hardness values after this period. Results showed heterogeneity in the microhardness of the cements inside the canal. All cements presented some degree of softening after ethanol treatment, which suggests instability of the polymer. The quality of curing of resin cements in the root canal environment seems unpredictable and highly material dependent. (C) 2009 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the cytotoxic effects of resin-based light-cured liners on culture of pulp cells. Methods: Discs measuring 4 mill in diameter and 2 mm thick were fabricated from TheraCal (TCMTA), Vitrebond (VIT), and Ultrablend Plus (UBP). These specimens were immersed in serum-free culture medium (DMEM) for 24 hours or 7 days to produce the extracts. After incubating the pulp cells for 72 hours, the extracts were applied on the cells and the cytotoxic effects were determined based on the cell metabolism (MTT), total protein expression and cell morphology (SEM). In the control group, fresh DMEM was used. Data from MTT analysis and protein expression were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests at the preset level of significance of 5%. Results: When in contact with the 24-hour extract, TCMTA, VIT, and UBP decreased the cell metabolism by 31.5%, 73.5% and 71.0%, respectively. The total protein expressed by the cells in contact with VIT and UBP was lower than TCMTA and DMEM (Mann-Whitney, P< 0.05). When in contact with the 7-day extract, TCMTA, VIT, and UBP decreased the metabolic activity by 45.9%, 77.1% and 64.4%, respectively. All the liners expressed statistically lower amounts of proteins when compared to the control. A reduction in the number of cells was observed for all liners. The remaining cells from TCMTA group resembled those from the control group while for VIT and UBP the cells presented significant morphological alterations. (Ani J Dent 2009;22:137-142).
