This paper investigates the relationship between learning style, as determined by Kolb's Learning Style Inventory, age and one measure of academic performance in design assignments for two cohorts of first- and third-year architecture students. The paper focuses on the results of a cross-curriculum learning style survey conducted as part of a project aimed at resolving the learning difficulties of students collaborating in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural team assignments. The research was conducted to determine how learning style differences in heterogeneous teams might be addressed through pedagogy. In light of evidence in student cohorts of learning style changes towards the learning styles of design teachers as students progress through their studies, this paper demonstrates how these changes reflect a statistically significant relationship between learning styles and academic performance in design assignments.

How selected next generation technologies support collaborative participation between higher education students and educators within a virtual socially networked e-learning landscape and encourage the interaction of communities of learners in multiple modes, ranging from text and images accessed within the Deakin Studies Online learning management system to a constructed virtual world in which the user’s creative imagination transports them to the “other side” of their computer screens is discussed in this paper. This study reports about teacher learning and in particular, teachers who have extensive teaching experience but limited ICT knowledge and skills. The Digital Immigrant Teachers (DITs) grew up before digital technologies; they are not frequently confident or comfortable with ICT. Like all immigrants, they have to learn new and creative ways to enhance their survival in the third millennium, where the acceleration of knowledge has allowed communication and application of information to be rapidly disseminated. In order to fully participate in the technologically rich society DITs must actively engage in the construction of authentic and purposeful learning. This research came about as a result of the digital immigrants' struggles to construct and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to teach in the Knowledge Economy and the Information Age. The experienced present day teachers, as digital immigrants are trying to teach digital natives (Prensky, 2001 & 2003). And in order to assist these teachers in their learning ICT struggle, it is imperative to understand the teacher learning process, and the learning style through which they acquire the knowledge and skills for this new milieu.

Among a variety of learning conceptions, David Kolb´s Experiential Learning Theory proposes four different learning styles: diverging, characterized by orientation towards people and multi-perspective vision; assimilating, concerned with ideas and abstract concepts as well as theory formulation; converging, expert in dealing with technical tasks and problem solving; and accommodating, risk taker and good at getting things done. Interesting correlations have been pointed out between Kolb s learning styles, professional careers and genders. With respect to behaviors, specific cognitive skills and interests, sex differences are widely known, and explained by Evolutionary Psychology as the result of distinct selective pressures acting on each gender. The aim of this research was to assess adolescents learning styles and their relation with interests on school and career choices, analyzing possible gender differences. We distributed questionnaires to 221 senior high school students to research their preferences for school disciplines, professional activities and career choices. The Learning Style Inventory specified the learning style of each individual. Our results showed a high frequency of reflective styles, with predominance of females as diverging and males as assimilating. Concerning school and professional interests, there were correlations between styles oriented towards the abstract and technical interests. Moreover, females preferred disciplines related to languages and interpersonal activities while males preferred disciplines related to science and technical activities. There were more males in exact science and engineering careers, and more females in social science and applied social science. Correlations found between learning styles, school and professional interests corroborate Kolb´s propositions, and the findings about gender differences are supported by Evolutionary Psychology theories

Our paper asks the question: Does mode of instruction format (live or online format) effect test scores in the principles of macroeconomics classes? Our data are from several sections of principles of macroeconomics, some in live format, some in online format, and all taught by the same instructor. We find that test scores for the online format, when corrected for sample selection bias, are four points higher than for the live format, and the difference is statistically significant. One possible explanation for this is that there was slightly higher human capital in the classes that had the online format. A Oaxaca decomposition of this difference in grades was conducted to see how much was due to human capital and how much was due to the differences in the rates of return to human capital. This analysis reveals that 25% of the difference was due to the higher human capital with the remaining 75% due to differences in the returns to human capital. It is possible that for the relatively older student with the appropriate online learning skill set, and with schedule constrains created by family and job, the online format provides them with a more productive learning environment than does the alternative traditional live class format. Also, because our data are limited to the student s academic transcript, we recommend future research include data on learning style characteristics, and the constraints formed by family and job choices.

Este documento presenta el diseño de un proyecto para la asignatura de tecnología de tercero de educación secundaria obligatoria en un instituto de enseñanza bilingüe. Se perfilan una serie de tareas cíclicas que permitirán desarrollar a los alumnos una mayor comprensión sobre el uso de la energía y la importancia del medio ambiente a través de la lengua inglesa. Este ciclo de actividades organizadas en cuatro sesiones se fundamenta en la metodología del Aprendizaje Integrado de Contenidos y Lengua Extranjera, AICLE. A través de esta se persigue el doble objetivo del aprendizaje de la lengua a la par que el del contenido. Para ello, las estrategias que se proponen se centran en el alumno y se apoyan en el trabajo colaborativo, la interacción entre iguales y las metodologías activas y participativas en las que son los propios estudiantes los que diseñan los contenidos y los adaptan a su estilo de aprendizaje. Aunque sin resultados concluyentes, el trabajo supone una aportación más a las propuestas de actividades cooperativas que centran el aprendizaje en las aulas AICLE. This project presents the design of a teaching sequence for the subject of technology in the third grade in a bilingual high school. A task cycle is created with the double objective of providing students with a deeper understanding about the use of energy and the importance of the environment through the English language. The series of activities were organized in four sessions, attending to Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) methodology. Throughout this double focussed objective of learning the language and the subject matter content at the same time, the strategies proposed are focused on the student and support collaborative work, peer interaction and active participatory methodologies, focussed in the students who are the real designers of the content materials based on their own learning style. Although no conclusive results are presented, this work aims to be a contribution to other cooperative task proposals as one of the main basis of CLIL methodology.

Debido a los cambios que el Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior introduce al potenciar las horas de trabajo no presencial, se hacen necesarios nuevos mecanismos para posibilitar una mejor comunicación y cooperación en el proceso de aprendizaje. Las redes sociales, como Facebook, pueden suministrar estos mecanismos, pero su uso satisfactorio para la docencia puede verse afectado en gran medida por el estilo de aprendizaje de los alumnos. Este artículo plantea la necesidad de estudiar la influencia de los diferentes estilos de aprendizaje en la docencia no presencial mediante el uso de redes sociales con el fin de incrementar el rendimiento de los alumnos. Cabe destacar que este artículo describe el proyecto “Las redes sociales y su relación con los estilos de aprendizaje” a realizar dentro del programa de Redes de Investigación en Docencia Universitaria del Instituto de Ciencias de la Educación de la Universidad de Alicante.

This study identifies valid orthogonal scales of Gray's animal learning paradigms, upon which his Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) is based, by determining a revised structure to the Gray-Wilson Personality Questionnaire (GWPQ) (Wilson, Gray, & Barrett, 1990). It is also determined how well Gray's RST scales predict the surface scales of personality, which were measured in terms of Eysenck Personality Profiler (EPP) scales, the EPQ-R and the learning styles questionnaire (LSQ) scales. First, results suggest that independent pathways of RST scales may exist in humans. Second, Fight seems related to Anxiety and not the Fight/Flight system as proposed by RST. Third. a remarkably consistent story emerges in that Extraversion scales are predicted by Fight, Psychoticism scales are predicted by Active-avoidance, Fight and/or Flight, and Neuroticism scales tend not to be predicted at all (except for Anxiety). Fourth, Gray's revised scales are Unrelated to gender and age effects and show a predictable overlap with the LSQ and original GWPQ scales. It is concluded that Gray's model of personality might provide a stable biological basis of many surface scales of personality, but that there must also be other influences on personality. These results question the finer structure of Gray's RST whilst also showing that RST has greater range of applicability than a strict interpretation of theory implies. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. This investigation sought to explore the nature and extent of school mathematical difficulties among the dyslexic population. Anecdotal reports have suggested that many dyslexics may have difficulties in arithmetic, but few systematic studies have previously been undertaken. The literature pertaining to dyslexia and school mathematics respectively is reviewed. Clues are sought in studies of dyscalculia. These seem inadequate in accounting for dyslexics' reported mathematical difficulties. Similarities between aspects of language and mathematics are examined for underlying commonalities that may partially account for concomitant problems in mathematics, in individuals with a written language dysfunction. The performance of children taught using different mathematics work-schemes is assessed to ascertain if these are associated with differential levels of achievement that may be reflected in the dyslexic population few are found. Findings from studies designed to assess the relationship between written language failure and achievement in mathematics are reported. Study 1 reveals large correlational differences between subtest scores (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Wechsler, 1976) and three mathematics tests, for young dyslexics and children without literacy difficulties. However, few differences are found between levels of attainment, at this age (6 ½ - 9 years). Further studies indicate that, for dyslexics, achievement in school mathematics, may be independent of measured intelligence, as is the case with their literacy skills. Studies 3 and 4 reveal that dyslexics' performances on a range of school mathematical topics gets relatively worse compared with that of Controls (age range 8 - 17 years), as they get older. Extensive item analyses reveal many errors relating strongly to known deficits in the dyslexics' learning style - poor short-term memory, sequencing skills and verbal labelling strategies. Subgroups of dyslexics are identified on the basis of mathematical performance. Tentative explanations, involving alternative neuropsychological approaches, are offered for the measured differences in attainment between these groups.

Educational games such as quizzes, quests, puzzles, mazes and logical problems may be modeled as multimedia board games. In the scope of the ADOPTA project1 being under development at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics at Sofia University, a formal model for presentation of such educational board games was invented and elaborated. Educational games can be modeled as special board mini-games, with a board of any form and any types of positions. Over defined positions, figures (objects) with certain properties are placed and, next, there are to be defined formal rules for manipulation of these figures and resulted effects. The model has been found to be general enough in order to allow description and execution control of more complex logical problems to be solved by several actions delivered to/by the player according some formal rules and context conditions and, in general, of any learning activities and their workflow. It is used as a base for creation of a software platform providing facilities for easy construction of multimedia board games and their execution. The platform consists of game designer (i.e., a game authoring tool) and game run-time controller communicating each other through game repository. There are created and modeled many examples of educational board games appropriate for didactic purposes, self evaluations, etc., which are supposed to be designed easily by authors with no IT skills and experience. By means of game metadata descriptions, these games are going be included into narrative storyboards and, next, delivered to learners with appropriate profile according their learning style, preferences, etc. Moreover, usage of artificial intelligence agents is planned as well – once as playing virtual opponents of the player or, otherwise, being virtual advisers of the gamer helping him/her in finding the right problem solution within given domain such as discovering a treasure using a location map, finding best tour in a virtual museum, guessing an unknown word in a hangman game, and many others.

In Taiwan, the college freshmen are recruited graduates of both senior high school and senior vocational school. The Ministry of Education (MOE) of the Republic of China prescribes the standards of curriculum and equipment for schools at all levels and categories. There exists a considerably different curriculum arrangement for senior high schools and vocational high schools in Taiwan at the present time. The present study used a causal-comparative research design to identify the influences of different post-secondary educational background on specialized course performance of college business majors. ^ The students involved in this study were limited to the students of four business-related departments at Tamsui Oxford University College in Taiwan. Students were assigned to comparison groups based on their post-secondary educational background as senior high school graduates and commercial high school graduates. The analysis of this study included a comparison of students' performance on lower level courses and a comparison of students' performance in financial management. The analysis also considered the relationship between the students' performance in financial management and its related prerequisite courses. The Kolb Learning Style Inventory (LSI) survey was administered to categorize subjects' learning styles and to compare the learning styles between the two groups in this study. The applied statistical methods included t-test, correlation, multiple regression, and Chi-square. ^ The findings of this study indicated that there were significant differences between the commercial high school graduates and the senior high school graduates on academic performances in specialized courses but not in general courses. There were no significant differences in learning styles between the two groups. These findings lead to the conclusion that business majors' academic performance in specialized courses were influenced by their post-secondary educational background. ^

The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship of computer anxiety to selected demographic variables: learning styles, age, gender, ethnicity, teaching/professional areas, educational level, and school types among vocational-technical educators.^ The subjects (n = 202) were randomly selected vocational-technical educators from Dade County Public School System, Florida, stratified across teaching/professional areas. All subjects received the same survey package in the spring of 1996. Subjects self-reported their learning style and level of computer anxiety by completing Kolb's Learning Style Inventory (LSI) and Oetting's Computer Anxiety Scale (COMPAS, Short Form). Subjects' general demographic information and their experience with computers were collected through a self-reported Participant Inventory Form.^ The distribution of scores suggested that some educators (25%) experienced some overall computer anxiety. There were significant correlations between computer related experience as indicated by self-ranked computer competence and computer based training and computer anxiety. One-way analyses of variance (ANOVA) indicated no significant differences between computer anxiety and/or computer related experiences, and learning style, age, and ethnicity. There were significant differences between educational level, teaching area, school type, and computer anxiety and/or computer related experiences. T-tests indicated significant differences between gender and computer related experiences. However, there was no difference between gender and computer anxiety.^ Analyses of covariance (ANCOVA) were performed for each independent variable on computer anxiety, with computer related experiences (self-ranked computer competence and computer based training) as the respective covariates. There were significant main effects for the educational level and school type on computer anxiety. All other variables were insignificant on computer anxiety. ANCOVA also revealed an effect for learning style varied notably on computer anxiety. All analyses were conducted at the.05 level of significance. ^
