USING THE FRESHWATER BIVALVE Anodontites tenebricosus (LEA, 1834) AS A BIOMONITOR OF METALS IN THE RIBEIRA DE IGUAPE RIVER

USING THE FRESHWATER BIVALVE Anodontites tenebricosus (LEA, 1834) AS A BIOMONITOR OF METALS IN THE RIBEIRA DE IGUAPE RIVER. This study investigated the contamination of the Ribeira de Iguape River - RIR by Cd, Zn, Cr and Pb, using the bivalve Anodontites tenebrieosus as a biomonitor. Metal concentrations in tissue samples were measured by HR-ICPMS. Bivalve tissues exhibited mean levels of 1.00 mu g/g Cd: 152.89 mu g/g Zn; 14.79 mu g/g Cr and 4.40 mu g/g Pb. Lead concentrations were comparable to those reported for moderately contaminated sites. The results showed that Pb is bioavailable to the bivalves, exhibiting high concentrations and exceeding both natural and reference values for human consumption. The freshwater bivalve Anodontites tenebricosus is a suitable biomonitor of contamination by metals.

Vital function for PRELI and essential requirement for its LEA motif

Proteins containing the late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) motif comprise an evolutionarily conserved family, long postulated to protect plant embryos from stress and death. However, the significance of LEA-containing proteins and the mechanisms behind their function remain undetermined. Here we show that PRELI, a mammalian protein that possesses tandem repeats of the LEA motif, can protect cells against staurosporine, TNF-α or UV irradiation-induced apoptosis. We found that key to PRELI-dependent mechanisms that promote cell resistance to death are the stabilization of the respiratory chain, upholding of mitochondrial membrane potential and retention of apoptogenic molecules. By in vitro and in vivo studies, we also show that the expression of mutant PRELI/LEA- proteins lacking the LEA motif, results in the complete loss of PRELI's anti-apoptotic functions. Collectively, our data uncover a new molecular player in the control of apoptosis and support the hypothesis that LEA-containing proteins are evolutionarily conserved cell protectors against stress and death. ^

Su novela siguiente sería Sangre de amor correspondido/ Sangue de amor correspondido, en español y en portugués. A diferencia de otros escritores que "cambian de lengua" y se la "apropian", en el caso de Puig se trata de escribir en el borde entre dos lenguas, con marcas de esa permeabilidad que señalan que esa lengua no es la propia. La ponencia tomará algunos manuscritos en inglés y en español para ver la interacción de la escritura en ambas lenguas

Este trabajo se propone dar cuenta de cómo Manuel Puig elabora una "lengua de traducción" en Maldición eterna a quien lea estas páginas, enfatizando sobre todo el carácter multilingüe de la novela, así como también la puesta en crisis del monolingüismo a partir de la crítica a la noción hegemónica de lengua que de ella se desprende.
