Focusing on the use of Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) in primary schools in Oeiras municipality, this article presents primary teachers’ views, from their experience, on the implementation of this innovation as a resource for the teaching and learning processes. IWBs have been recently launched in the framework of a major program aiming the technological modernization of Portuguese schools, in order to promote the use of ICT in teaching and learning, as well as in school management. Findings show that teachers are enthusiastic about Interactive White Boards because they really believe their pupils learn better and in a more joyful way. In this paper a new method for self-localization of mobile robots, based on a PCA positioning sensor to operate in unstructured environments, is proposed and experimentally validated. The proposed PCA extension is able to perform the eigenvectors computation from a set of signals corrupted by missing data. The sensor package considered in this work contains a 2D depth sensor pointed upwards to the ceiling, providing depth images with missing data. The positioning sensor obtained is then integrated in a Linear Parameter Varying mobile robot model to obtain a self-localization system, based on linear Kalman filters, with globally stable position error estimates. A study consisting in adding synthetic random corrupted data to the captured depth images revealed that this extended PCA technique is able to reconstruct the signals, with improved accuracy. The self-localization system obtained is assessed in unstructured environments and the methodologies are validated even in the case of varying illumination conditions.

Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium recognized as the major cause of peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis. Recently, a proteome-based approach was developed to investigate pathogenic factors related to H. pylori. In this preliminary study, H. pylori strains were isolated from gastric biopsies of patients with chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcers. A partial proteomic analysis of H. pylori strains was performed by bacterial lyses and proteins were separated by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). A comparative analysis was performed to verify a differential protein expression between these two 2-DE maps. These data should be useful to clarify the role of different proteins related to bacterial pathogenesis. This study will be completed using a larger number of samples and protein identification of H. pylori by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry.

The aims of the present study were to test the association between insecure attachment and basal cortisol and catecholamines levels in a sample of obese children. The role of familial vulnerability and gender was also investigated. Methods: Cortisol and catecholamines levels of 8- to 13-year olds obese children were measured. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess attachment pattern and current anxiety and depression, and parent-report questionnaires were used to assess attachment, current anxiety and depression and familial vulnerability. Linear regression analyses were performed for individuals that scored low versus high on parental internalizing problems, and for boys and girls, separately. Results: In the group with high parental internalizing problems, insecure attachment was significantly associated with reduced basal levels of cortisol, in boys (p=0.007, b= -0.861, R2= 73.0%). In the group with low parental internalizing problems, the association between insecure attachment and cortisol was not significant in either boys or girls, and it was negative in boys (p=0.075, b= -0.606, R2= 36.7%) and positive in girls (p=0.677, b= 0.176, R2= 3.1%) . Conclusions: Apparently, physiological risk factors for psicopathology in obesity are more evident in individuals with a high familial vulnerability. In addition, patterns of physiological risk for psicopathology in obesity are different in boys and girls. Therefore, it is important to take into account familial vulnerability and gender when investigating physiological risk factors for psycopathology in obesity. Insecure attachment in childhood may be a risk factor for obesity. Interventions to increase children's attachment security should examine the effects on children's weight.

Atualmente os sistemas Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) fazem parte do dia-a-dia de muitas empresas. Esta tecnologia tem evoluído significativamente ao longo da última década, tornando-se mais acessível e fácil de utilizar. Este trabalho consiste no desenvolvimento de um sistema de localização de veículos para smartphone Android. Para tal, foram desenvolvidas duas aplicações: uma aplicação de localização para smarphone Android e uma aplicação WEB de monitorização. A aplicação de localização permite a recolha de dados de localização GPS e estabelecer uma rede piconet Bluetooth, admitindo assim a comunicação simultânea com a unidade de controlo de um veículo (ECU) através de um adaptador OBDII/Bluetooth e com até sete sensores/dispositivos Bluetooth que podem ser instalados no veículo. Os dados recolhidos pela aplicação Android são enviados periodicamente (intervalo de tempo definido pelo utilizador) para um servidor Web No que diz respeito à aplicação WEB desenvolvida, esta permite a um gestor de frota efetuar a monitorização dos veículos em circulação/registados no sistema, podendo visualizar a posição geográfica dos mesmos num mapa interativo (Google Maps), dados do veículo (OBDII) e sensores/dispositivos Bluetooth para cada localização enviada pela aplicação Android. O sistema desenvolvido funciona tal como esperado. A aplicação Android foi testada inúmeras vezes e a diferentes velocidades do veículo, podendo inclusive funcionar em dois modos distintos: data logger e data pusher, consoante o estado da ligação à Internet do smartphone. Os sistemas de localização baseados em smartphone possuem vantagens relativamente aos sistemas convencionais, nomeadamente a portabilidade, facilidade de instalação e baixo custo.

Clinically childhood occipital lobe epilepsy (OLE) manifests itself with distinct syndromes. The traditional EEG recordings have not been able to overcome the difficulty in correlating the ictal clinical symptoms to the onset in particular areas of the occipital lobes. To understand these syndromes it is important to map with more precision the epileptogenic cortical regions in OLE. Experimentally, we studied three idiopathic childhood OLE patients with EEG source analysis and with the simultaneous acquisition of EEG and fMRI, to map the BOLD effect associated with EEG spikes. The spatial overlap between the EEG and BOLD results was not very good, but the fMRI suggested localizations more consistent with the ictal clinical manifestations of each type of epileptic syndrome. Since our first results show that by associating the BOLD effect with interictal spikes the epileptogenic areas are mapped to localizations different from those calculated from EEG sources and that by using different EEG/fMRI processing methods our results differ to some extent, it is very important to compare the different methods of processing the localization of activation and develop a good methodology for obtaining co-registration maps of high resolution EEG with BOLD localizations.
