Independence of alpine meadow plants from soil organic matter for nitrogen supply: evidence from stable nitrogen isotopes

Stable nitrogen isotope signatures of major sources of mineral nitrogen ( mineralization of soil organic nitrogen, biological N-2 fixation by legumes, annual precipitation and plant litter decomposition) were measured to relatively define their individual contribution to grass assimilation at the Haibei Alpine Meadow Ecosystem, Qinghai, China. The results indicated that delta N-15 values (- 2.40 parts per thousand to 0.97 parts per thousand) of all grasses were much lower than those of soil organic matter (3.4 +/- 0.18 parts per thousand) and mineral nitrogen ( ammonium and nitrate together,7.8 +/- 0.57 parts per thousand). Based on the patterns of stable nitrogen isotopes, soil organic matter (3.4 +/- 0.18 parts per thousand), biological N-2 fixation (0 parts per thousand), and precipitation (- 6.34 +/- 0.24 parts per thousand) only contributed to a small fraction of nitrogen requirements of grasses, but plant litter decomposition (- 1.31 +/- 1.01 parts per thousand) accounted for 67%.

Thickness independence of true phase transition temperatures in barium strontium titanate films

The functional properties of two types of barium strontium titanate (BST) thin film capacitor structures were studied: one set of structures was made using pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) and the other using chemical solution deposition. While initial observations on PLD films looking at the behavior of T-m (the temperature at which the maximum dielectric constant was observed) and T-c(*) (from Curie-Weiss analysis) suggested that the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition was progressively depressed in temperature as BST film thickness was reduced, further work suggested that this was not the case. Rather, it appears that the temperatures at which phase transitions occur in the thin films are independent of film thickness. Further, the fact that in many cases three transitions are observable, suggests that the sequence of symmetry transitions that occur in the thin films are the same as in bulk single crystals. This new observation could have implications for the validity of the theoretically produced thin film phase diagrams derived by Pertsev [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 1988 (1998)] and extended by Ban and Alpay [J. Appl. Phys. 91, 9288 (2002)]. In addition, the fact that T-m measured for virgin films does not correlate well with the inherent phase transition behavior, suggests that the use of T-m alone to infer information about the thermodynamics of thin film capacitor behavior, may not be sufficient. Distance and Proximity in Service to the Empire: Ulster and New Zealand between the Wars

This essay uses the concepts of ‘distance’ and ‘proximity’ to investigate and assess perceptions of community, nation and empire in inter-war New Zealand and Ulster (as well as Ireland and Northern Ireland) within a British imperial context, and explores the extent to which service of the empire (for example in the First World War) promoted both notions of imperial unity and local autonomy. It focuses on how these perceptions were articulated in the inter-war years during visits to Northern Ireland by three New Zealand premiers – Massey, Forbes and Coates – and to New Zealand by the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland, Lord Craigavon. It discusses the significant ways in which distance from their ‘home base’ and proximity to expatriate communities (in Craigavon's case) and Irish unionists and nationalists (in the case of the New Zealand premiers) inflected public statements during their visits. By examining these inter-war visits and investigating the rhetoric used and the cultural demonstrations associated with them, the factors of both distance and proximity can be used to evaluate similarities and difference across two parts of the empire. Thus, we can throw some light on the nature and dynamics of British imperial identity in the early twentieth century.

This article analyses the future of the preventive war doctrine, formulated by the Bush administration, under international law. The article thus explores whether the preventive war doctrine has the potential to set a customary precedence, or whether it merely constitutes a breach of international law.
